Robert Scoble6,779,205@104987932455782713675 and I are talking about how the filters work on Facebook and why they aren't as nice to photographers as Google+ is.  Which got me a ton of questions about my feed, and what I'm seeing/learning about how the filters work and how to "game" them to get things through to more people's feeds on Facebook. I'm linking to here from Facebook, so there. This one is for the Facebook fans (or haters)2014-08-07 01:11:30140

The general plan is similar to previous meet-ups, and includes a mixture of dining, photography, theme park , and shopping options. Some gatherings are free, the theme park will require a ticket purchase, but you can pick and choose to attend any individual component you want *I created a quick guide:*  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CDAu5lawYKnGsHSiVvxdHvqkI3jblO9V0U-55XYbg3Y *_Note 1:_*_ I have split this event into two adjacent events. Disney Parks1,492,224Join us on April 10th at 1:00pm PT, for a very special Google+ Hangout On Air with Academy Award® winning composer and Disney legend Richard M. Sherman in celebration the 50th anniversary of “it’s a small world,”® the classic Disney Parks attraction that opened as a salute to UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) and children around the world at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.   Want a chance to appear in the Hangout as a featured participant? Ask your question in the Q&A app and we may pick you!   Feeling a bit camera shy but still have a great question to ask? No problem! You can still ask it in the Q&A app or Tweet it using #SmallWorldHangout - our moderator will be asking Mr. Sherman a selection of the best fan-submitted questions during the Hangout!   Fans around the world are also invited to join the global sing-along by visiting www.SmallWorld50.com - a “global hub” of music and harmony where guests may record videos of themselves singing the classic song and create virtual “it’s a small world” dolls to benefit UNICEF.Disney Parks presents: Richard M. Keith Barrett1,163,156Meet for lunch (and maybe things after) in Epcot at the Sunshine Seasons food court (lower level of "The Land" pavilion). Requires you can enter the park to meet up. There are many things we can try 1. Get a fast past to Soarin' (if they are available). I can ask the cast member to take a photo of us all lined up in the seating.  The same thing at Test Track is also possible. 2. No one has recorded Glass video of "Listen to the Land" or the "Universe of Energy" yet. 3. Sit in a circle and each take a photo of their perspective. We can then stitch them together later. 4. We can all play and record the "Agent P" game (formally Kim Possible). 5. We can take over the English Pub or have margaritas in Mexico. Make sure your Glass is charged up :-)Orlando 1st Google Glass Meetup (Epcot)2013-09-01 12:00:009

Spinning Blue Ball Epidemic

WORK AROUND FOUND - See below.

Facebook appears to have made a change that is causing large numbers of people (include me) to see their cursor change into a spinning blue ball. This only happens on the Facebook desk site (no other web sites), mostly using Firefox. The ball appears when you hover over most links and cards. And the odd thing is there's nothing you can do to stop it. Reboots, clearing cache, turning off javascript .. nothing affects it.

For me it's a distraction and is making my eyes go nuts to have a constantly animated pointer.

WORK AROUND
Install the following two Firefox extensions:
UAControl: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/uacontrol/
JSFixer: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/user-agent-js-fixer/?src=search

Configure the UAControl extension to change the User Agent only when on the Facebook site. I made my agent "Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.10; rv:38.0) Opera/1.0" (yes I changed "Firefox" to "Opera") I'm still testing this string, but in general the work-around is to change your User Agent string.

UPDATE: It's not a foolproof work-around. Some claim it works; some not.___

PLEX Accounts Compromised

This email was in my inbox this morning. I applaud PLEX for being open with their customers, they've earned more of my respect for it. However I wasn't a fan of linking BBS/forum board accounts with service accounts having PPI or PCI data (the merge even broke my access and they had to intervene), so that change made me cautious. Fortunately, I have never had a linked credit card, and the email and password on file is unique to my use of the service, so the impact to me is minimal. I was protected from the Adobe site break-in using the same precautions.

IMPORTANT SECURITY NOTICE

Dear Plex User,

Sadly, we became aware this afternoon that the server which hosts our forums and blog was compromised. We are still investigating, but as far as we know, the attacker only gained access to these parts of our systems.... more »

I was protected from the Adobe site break-in using the same precautions.

IMPORTANT SECURITY NOTICE

Dear Plex User,

Sadly, we became aware this afternoon that the server which hosts our forums and blog was compromised. We are still investigating, but as far as we know, the attacker only gained access to these parts of our systems. Rest assured that credit card and other payment data are not stored on our servers at all.

If you are receiving this email, you have a forum account which is linked to a plex.tv account. The attacker was able to gain access to IP addresses, private messages, email addresses and encrypted forum passwords (in technical terms, they are hashed and salted). Despite the password encryption measures, we take your privacy and security very seriously, so as a precaution, we're requiring that you change your password.

Be sure to choose a strong password, never share it, and never re-use passwords for different accounts! Even better, use a password manager (1Password, for example) to manage a unique password for you. Access to your Plex account will be blocked until you do so.

Please follow this link to choose a new password.

We're sorry for the inconvenience, but both your privacy and security are very important to us and we'd rather be safe than sorry!

We will post more detailed information on our blog shortly. Thanks for using Plex!

Should Foreign Outsourcing Be Held To Anti-Discrimination Policies?

Considering the importance of gay rights in our country, confirmed by our own Supreme Court, and the scale of IT Indian outsourcing and the concerns of replacing employees with it, why is this never discussed? - http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/11/world/asia/india-same-sex-relationship/

HCL for example, Disney's IT partner in Florida, has no formal policy statement I can find in their "about us" or careers section of their site on being an equal opportunity employer or not discriminating based on sex or age or religion or sexual orientation. There's none on Cognizant Technology Solutions site, Disney's IT partner in California, that I can find either and if you click the "Our Views" link in their "Our Company" section ( http://www.cognizant.com/careers/our-company ) you get a 404 error.  Shouldn't we require all corporate partnerships and companies conducting business here have such policies in place with public disclosure? Even if a company has good policies, what about the country itself we're supporting? And not just India; as a nation we've been pretty vocal about China's labor practices and Russia's gay discrimination, so we should not have different standards.  A company is responsible for its entire supply chain, so why is there no outrage, protest or even discussion about a possible conflict of interest?  - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_in_India

Please be sensitive to this and the audience. I have zero tolerance for trolls or anyone leveraging this as an excuse to exercise intolerance, hate or throw labels or insults at people. NYT Posts An Update On Their Disney Layoffs Story

This quote is a little troubling:

"Disney had also instructed its many contractors in the area to not hire the workers that had been laid off for one year. There are few tech jobs nearby not connected to Disney."

I hope this doesn't mean they aren't getting hired by the contracting firms for non-Disney related work as well, or even Disney non-technology work.

That's because they have.

I do bet that this India response effort is better planned and  executed than any analysis or probe performed by Washington.___

Our Robot Overlords Are Here Already

Here's a weird thought. Instead of using technology to make our lives easier and increase leisure time, we're really improving the lives of the machines. We make computers better each time, they're able to do more with less risk and failure, they're able to converse between themselves better, we do the work they can't so it gets done, they charge us with crimes (traffic cameras), take jobs, and our leisure time and  sleep are actually decreasing. The world population growth is slowing while the adoption of technology is increasing.  We're working for them! :-)

Google+ Has a Serious "Flag Comment" Problem

I've been seeing comments getting "flagged" as inappropriate by people that are perfectly reasonable posts. In most cases it's by someone who doesn't agree with the comment or dislikes the person, flagging it in retaliation or protest so it's no longer visible. Reverse trolling. It's suppression of speech or opposing views, and it can make a post look less engaging by reducing the total number of visible comments.

I unflag them when I find them, but this is a difficult problem for Google+. You need to leverage your followers to find and flag things because it is the only way to stay ahead of it and cleans up a mess quickly, especially in very active posts. However it is also getting abused and is unfair to anyone who took their time to write something.

You need to leverage your followers to find and flag things because it is the only way to stay ahead of it and cleans up a mess quickly, especially in very active posts. However it is also getting abused and is unfair to anyone who took their time to write something.

I have a few ideas how this can be addressed:

1. I do not get a Google alert that a comment has been flagged. There's no setting I can find to enable it.

2. Once the author of a post unflags a comment, it should not be possible for anyone to flag it again. This would be trivial to add.

3. It would be nice to have a way to set a time limit on how old a post can become until people can no longer comment on it, or only previous commenters can comment.

4. I'd like a setting where if a post is open to public commenting, and the person who commented isn't in my circles,  I have to approve the comment before it is visible. This would also help a lot with several vulnerabilities concerning trolls and spammers.

5. I would like to see who flagged it, so I can determine repeat offenders and they can be banned (or if Google adds it, placed in a circle preventing them from future flagging or commenting).

I, Cringely Reports Disney's IT Chaos Goes Deep

Unfortunately I can't comment on most of this, as it's while I was still an employee under agreement. All I'll say is  some of it is right, some of it is wrong, and some is more chaotic than reported. As someone in the story comments points out, the layoff age situation was inaccurate. Some of the people terminated hadn't been there long, but the majority I knew of (including myself) had been there between 5-25 years. It also seems specific people, perhaps under 5 years of service, got the 10% check because I didn't. I received normal severance for 10 years service. #Disney

Hollywood Reporter on Disney

This story reports something new; that the staff in Florida who trained replacements were paid a bonus incentive (rather than the standard severance, which everyone had to work until 1/30 to receive in full). This is the first I've seen this and it's contrary to what HR told me and what  people said in our last day meetup. Does anyone know whether this is true, was it paid after the fact, or is it a new interpretation? I don't want to contribute to misinformation.

Are Major Theme Parks Leaving The Middle Class Behind?

This Washington Post story appeared in my LinkedIn feed today. I believe both sides have valid points. NBC-Universal and Disney World raise their prices almost every year, causing the other parks to follow suit. Annual passes at these parks are so expensive there are payment plan options for them now. NBC-Universal just banned bringing your own food into their parks (instead of restricting coolers, quantity, etc), a significant cost saver for many while visiting  a place you can't leave and return to easily. Hotels prices have less of an impact in this because people can always stay somewhere else.

But I haven't observed a shift in the type of people visiting the parks, and they still fill up with crowds. Disney is correct; the only way to "shift" crowds away from the peak periods, which fill up to... more »

But I haven't observed a shift in the type of people visiting the parks, and they still fill up with crowds. Disney is correct; the only way to "shift" crowds away from the peak periods, which fill up to capacity, is to make them more expensive than at other times (or make the other times less expensive). but that impacts the working class more than the wealthy because most families can only go when their children are not in school. Public schools are nearly ruthless today against taking your kids sway for a family event, and private schools are very expensive.

So where is the tipping point here, and how do you address these problems while keeping costs affordable?___
