Google Glass Not Banned In WV (Yet)
The WV bill to treat Google Glass as distraction and ban wearing it while driving was apparently introduced too late to succeed this year and will not be in a position for a vote until 2014.
But this same legislature (Gary Howell) dismisses all Glass privacy fears, saying he "[doesn't] anticipate regulating the device any further in other circumstances", noting "If I'm in a public space, I have no expected right of privacy.", and the importance of personal liberty by saying "I wear seatbelts religiously but I don't believe in seatbelt laws." These inconsistent and extreme positions compared to wanting Glass banned while driving have lead some WV citizens [as noted in discussion board comments] to propose that what's really going on is related to the growing problem of police misconduct, and may be ... more »

Twice this week I stood in front of a room of about 20 people and explained the wonders and challenges of Google Glass, once as part of a Google I/O extended session. I wish +Project Glass there was away I could register as a developer and pick up my Glass now. Perhaps +Robert Scoble or +Trey Ratcliff or +Vic Gundotra can put in a word for me - It's hard promoting something I can't demonstrate. There's even a Google office in Celebration FL, but I would have been in CA if Google I/O hadn't already been full. #ifihadglass I'd be better at Google PR ;-)

Google+ Mobile App (iOS) Doesn't Obey Large Font Settings Or Your G+ Columns settings
Needless to say I'm having a very challenging time using the mobile app on my iPad. Can barely read text and comments. This is what happens when you display in box objects, and don't you have programmers on your team older than 40.
It's also in multi-column mode despite my account settings specifying single column mode, which lends itself to smaller fonts.

Google Chat/Hangout List
Anyone know how I can set my Hangout List and Google Chat/Talk list in Gmail to only show the contacts or circles I care about? I can't find any customization settings that will allow me to view only people who I have a specific relationship with. In fact Hangouts are showing me people that I have no relationship with at all.

It's Now Easier To Mute People, And Harder To Mute posts
UPDATE: The "mute post" is still there but has been moved to the bottom of the notification, in the lower right. It doesn't make sense this would be different, since it's in the menu of the stream post, plus it was in the menu before and we're all use to it. It also doesn't make sense to encourage muting people over posts because it's easier. "Mute Post" should always be in the menu no matter how you view the article.
Seems that I can no longer mute a post directly from the desktop notification box (haven't look at the mobile app yet). "Mute Post" there has been replaced by "mute <profile name>". Most of the time I just need to mute a post not everything by the individual, and the notification box is a per-post notification system so that m... more »

I've Switched My G+ Stream To Single Column
I quickly got tired of not being able to read or locate posts in chronological order, so I've switched my Google+ stream display to a single column. While the multi-column format was visually attractive, it makes timelines harder to follow. This is the same reason I stopped reading my Facebook stream except as email notifications and direct links. I now have a lot of empty space on my screen, as the G+ column is a fixed width and no longer autosizes to fill the screen. It took me a while to figure out how to set single column. Although the Google IO presentation mentioned you can change it, I could not locate a "number of columns" preferences setting [Note: This is because I was in "profile" mode -- see update]. I had to enable the "accessibility" box.
Another challenge is that the &qu... more »

The lesson here is that police will confiscate your electronics, even if they have no legal basis to do so, then try to coerce you into accessing them if you are smart enough to password protect them, which they also have no legal basis to do so.
But here's a man who refused to allow them to do that. Not much different than what Eric Faden did a few weeks ago. Except he was forced to hire a lawyer.

Google Announces "Google Now" Will Support Scheduled Cards
Yeah! I've been asking for this! If I can program a traffic card to come up at a specific time every day when I usually plan my commute drives, or a weather card in the morning before I leave, then I'll have less problems with Google Now constantly not undeerstanding my schedule correctly. Add to that being able to create my own "alarm clock" cards especially if they could actually ring the alarm and wake me ;-)
Now if I can only tell it which specific contact group or G+ circle I care about for birthdays and to ignore all my other relationships I'd be in heaven! (Today I had 30 birthday announcment cards - only 1 was of someone I know).

Star Of SNL's Glass Sketch Tries It Out For Real
Google really needs to add a voice recognition lock to the owner, or the option of reciting a lock code shown on the screen, to prevent 3rd parties from saying "OK Glass" to you.
For example; if there was a "secure command" setting, it could work like this... Anyone can say "OK Glass", but the very next thing that occurs is that Glass displays a random 2 digit number (which is only visible to the eye of the wearer). The next command has to be a repeating of that number before accepting the next command. Otherwise it times out and goes back to sleep. It will also do that if you get the number wrong. This will prevent people from hijacking your device.

Movie Theaters Shouldn't Do Anything About Google Glass
The more I think about this, the more I realize that theaters really shouldn't do anything special about Google Glass. Anytime you're using Glass or recording with it, the display is going to glow in the dark room. Even if you covered that up completely, you wouldn't know what Glass is doing unless you also paired it up with the phone app (so you might be better off recording with the phone). Anytime you coughed or turned your head for any reason it's going to disturb the recording (who can keep their head perfectly still for 2 hours?), plus it needs to be plugged into a portable charger to compensate for just 60 minutes of battery life. I also doubt most people want the Glass display in their field of vision while watching a movie. I mentioned in a prevous post that it has no recording risk at all in a 3D mov... more »

OK Glass - Record a 3D video
I wondered why Google didn't run a wire through the Google Glass headband and provide for putting a second, optional battery on the other ear stem. Now I'm thinking it might be cool if in addition to that, since a goal of Google Glass is to capture your "moment" on video and from your POV, if they offered an option to place a second entire Glass device on the opposite ear stem, connect them together (WiFi?), and allow the user to record stereo photos and video.

Movie Theaters Consider Revising Personal Recording Equipment Policies
Motivated by Google Glass's introduction of head mounted computing, movie theaters are considering what to do in general about the trend, and whether a ban on any recording device means asking for it to be put away or checking it in and returning it later. I can offer them one piece of advice - I'd be willing to put it away (unless seeing through my prescription lenses are a factor) but I'm not handing it over to you. I'll give up going to theaters altogether for the security of my home big screen if that occurs.
I also think that they shouldn't do ANYTHING if the movie is in 3D. There's no way to record anything worthwhile without placing one lens of the 3D glasses over the Glass camera, and you won't be enjoying the movie youself doing that (you'll also be pretty obvious).... more »

Obviously This Person Wouldn't "Get" Open Source Either
Amazes me when financially centric professionals can't comprehend any motivation other than money, when for most people money is not the #1 motivator. How about the public good? Creativity? Recognition or personal accomplishment? Advancement toward a better tomorrow? Being first? The thrill of exploration? How about the simple fact that we're writing software for ourselves instead of for someone else's profit, using quality, imagination and learning as our main motivation? Ever hear of Wikipedia? :-)

Supreme Court rules in favor of Monsanto corporation that the people treating seeds as seeds violates their patents. What's next? Will companies own all the offspring of your genetically treated house pet? Facial Recognition App For Google Glass
I think facial recognition would be a killer app for Google Glass - being able to automatically show notes and contact info for people you meet. This app is not quite that, but I think that it will come. You can also do it without facial recognition, but Glass would need to be reliably informed where people are geographic positioned instead of facially recognized. Collating the positional data from Facebook, Tweets, Google+ and Foursquare for people near your GPS location for example, coupled with knowing the direction you are facing.

On Glass ... after ten days of wear
On the rare occasion that I forget my phone, I get anxious. It's not the end of the world if I'm without the gadget for a little while, but I reflexively reach for the bag or pant pocket it's normally tucked into — only to grasp thin air. It's a very startling moment.
Today — about ten days into wearing Google Glass — I caught myself tapping my temple, intending to check on a calendar event.
I jumped when I didn't make contact with Glass.
Apparently I've already gotten so accustomed to constantly wearing it, that it didn't fully register that I'd left the device charging on my desk (because I'd forgotten to plug it in last night).
I expected Glass to easily become part of my day, but I didn't think that I'd already be a little bit reliant on the gadget after only a week-a... more »
