#BirdPoker Over the Shoulder Look curated by +Phil Armishaw

I am very lucky to have Scarlet Tanagers nest at eye level with my lower deck - the birds, who are usually up high in the canopy, are always down low. Yesterday, I discovered the female bathing in my small pond. The second time she went to it, her mate (photographed) waited on my fence for her to finish. It was great seeing this beautiful bird out in the open BELOW eye level from my window!

I do not record birds often because I hardly carry a tripod. This is one of the few times I had one, so I recorded the beautiful song of this Hermit Thrush while waiting to photograph a Barred Owl family.

#BirdPoker Male Traits curated by +Phil Armishaw

Obviously, this is not a wild bird, but not very many people know one of the subtle differences between a male and female Starling. On males, the base of the lower mandible is bluish or blue-gray; on females, it is a pinkish color. You can only see this when they are in breeding plumage with a yellow beak.

#BirdPoker Record Shots curated by +Phil Armishaw

A Gyrfalcon digi-scoped with my phone. It's the best photo I have so far but I would love to get another one. This particular bird stuck around in Wallkill, New York for quite some time.

I wrote a blog post about this bird and other winter visitors here: http://www.digibirder.com/blog/2015/02/two-rare-birds-one-epic-day/

#BirdPoker Ocean Birds curated by +Phil Armishaw

Northern Gannets do not normally stay close to the shoreline, however, on this day after Christmas in 2013, we had at least one hundred of them fishing just off shore at Barnegat.
