I'm wondering if anyone here collects Australian coins? I'm into decimal errors, and a member of a couple of forums, but the overwhelming US focus is daunting. :(

Hate, hate, HATE the new Failbook-timeline-wannabee BS layout! And I do NOT want full-page pics eating up my bandwidth THAT I PAY FOR, especially at the cost of actual TEXT which is what I'm here to READ in the first place. WHY are Google so intent on destroying G+ piece by piece?????

2004 5¢ burnt and sandblasted. Why DO people do this to coins anyway? Not too distressing when its a junker, but I've seen valuable rarities destroyed like this. :(

2000 $1 Victoria Cross pulled from circulation.
Why anyone would spend a $300 coin is completely beyond me, but it seems to happen an awful lot. :(

Is it just me or has most of the internet just gone down? Apart from Google, nothing outside Australia seems to be working right now. :(

10¢ Cuds: 1999 (x3), 2008, 2012)
While the 1999's are well known for this particular die break, they do occur on other years as well, as evidenecd by the 2008 and 2012 on the right. Also interesting to see the flat spot on the middle 1999, possibly a strikethrough.

1980 10¢ with the biggest cud I've ever found. In 33 years, tens of thousands of people have handled this coin, all without actually looking at it. :(

A lot of people collect things. Coins, Stamps, Beer Cans, Ice Cream Sticks, and all manner of other stuff. BUT how many really think about how they store and protect their collections?
This shows the damage PVC can cause in just a couple of short years. A friend of mine stuffed a PVC sack full of coin bags and promptly forgot about them, thinking they were safe. As you can see, that was not the case.
Note the yellowing of the bags, compared to a new one on the left. Also note the cancer on one of the coins. This damage is irreversible and makes them worthless. So if you have something stashed away, go and check how its stored before this happens to you.
And if you do collect coins, and bought any collector items a couple of decades ago, be aware they were all packaged in PVC back then, before anyone realised the harm it causes.

While there doesn't seem to be evidence of actual wrongdoing at this stage, the squirreling away of $17 million over 20 years with no indication of what it was to be used for raises all sorts of questions.
Apart from any possible improprieties, there is also a broader issue relating to the transplanting of foreign cultures and ways of thinking into host societies. Mid-century Italy was a dramatically different place to Australia, then or now. Much of the Italian community failed to assimilate and has been marching to the beat of a different drum. A beat far removed from what we expect in Australia. That needs to end, for the good of all.
There will be lessons to come out of this affair. Not just for Italians, but for other imported cultures who may be equally opaque.

Fascinating bit of history dug out of the FBI's files, showing the sort of shenanigans corporations get up to. One can only wonder what may turn up on today's crop of dirty secrets in say 30 years time.

So... Samsung opens new stores with much fanfare and flashy eye candy... driven by MacBook Pros naturally. And what do they do? Why, plaster over the Apple logo with bits of paper and tape so nobody knows, of course. FAIL!

For those who enjoyed Derek's Chloride Trifluoride post a few years ago, here is a followup, with video. If you haven't seen the original, do yourself a favour and have a read. Who said Chemistry can't be fun? ;)

2010 20¢ Die Cracks
This pair of coins show the same error, a hairline crack which curves onto and along the Platypus' bill. Yet another reason to check all your 2010 coins. :)

Got a spare 5Gb of bandwidth? Want to foil big government stupidity? Then grab this torrent!
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released the latest census data under a Creative Commons licence. BUT they then went out of their way to make it frustrating enough to get that people are driven to pay $250 for a DVD to be mailed to them. This is total Bureaucratic BS, and needs to be knocked on the head before it becomes standard procedure for all government data.

Sing along with me...
Microsoft killed the Intel Star...
OK, so it needs work. Nonetheless, Windows 8 is driving customers away and killing PC sales, which in turn is hurting Intel. I certainly wouldn't be buying into either company. ;)

When did this become the Cult of Android Trolls Community? Because we sure seem to have an infestation of them. :(

Here's a 2006 50¢ Strikethrough. It appears a bit of wire fell into the press and the resulting indentation is very pronounced on the bottom (Right side of the photo).
If only I had caught this before it copped 7 tears of circulation wear and tear. :(

Ever wondered what the difference is between different types of mint coins? This page handily defines such terms as UNC, FDC, Proof, etc and makes a good starting point for novices.

I decided to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot on my phone to potentially freak out some people while I'm out. They'd probably guess the password if they're a fan so I'll probably change it.

Tunnel
Story of the Tünel, the second oldest subway in the world after London Underground, story begins with entrepreneurship of French engineer Eugene Henri Gavand. He observed human traffic going back and forth between Galata which was center of social life and Pera where heart of trade and banking used to beat and considered an alternative way to Yüksekkaldırım and Galip Dede street. He went to Ottoman Sultan Abdul Aziz Khan for permission to his project which building funicular railway to connect two centers. Project was decided to be BOT( build-operate-transfer) model, along 42 years. Gavand obtained the privilege on 10 June, 1869.
Tunnel construction works started on June 30, 1871. On July, 1872 British company " The Metropolitan Railway of Constantinople to the Galata Pera" was registered. On December 5, 1874 the construction was completed and started carryin... more »

The $90 Billion bargain of the century, given most of the tech we now take for granted probably wouldn't have existed without it.

That said, there are some very creative bits of vandalism art here... Enjoy! :)
