It still blows my mind how easy it is to get an excellent, free education from some of the best schools on the planet.  Lifehacker U rounds up the best of what's available online for the Spring semester. (Even if you're not planning to "matriculate", share with a friend you think might benefit from some free classes!)

Ever wonder how the astronauts aboard the International Space Station steer the whole thing? Well, some of it is some pretty sweet gyros and an autopilot, some of it is a pretty sweet looking joystick, and some of it is a Thinkpad I see hiding in the back of this video:

The Three-Body Problem is one that you actually study in quite a bit of detail in undergrad physics. The fact that new solutions have been found is both intriguing and also a beautiful reminder that our understanding of physics is still evolving and growing, and that's exciting.

If you spun this fast, you'd barf too

Astronomers have found that a black hole in the center of the nearby galaxy NGC 1365 is spinning at very nearly the speed of light! As matter falls in, it heats up and blasts out X-rays. Observing these X-rays erupting from so close to the black hole reveals its spin, which is at a rate of hundreds of thousands of kilometers per second. It's the first time such a high spin rate has been detected this way, and it gives us insight on how the black hole formed.

A question for all of you:

Would you pay a monthly subscription fee for desktop software? And when I say desktop software, I mean something most of us consider a "core" app - a web browser, an email client, a word processor.

Note - this monthly fee only entitles you to the right to keep using the app, and to updates and patches. It's not a service: no cloud components, no value-add, nothing like that. I'm looking at a service that plans to launch its Windows app as a subscription, and I'm trying to decide if they're crazy or brilliant. #articleresearch

This massive quasar cluster is the larges cosmic structure (and by structure, we mean a collection of bodies that seem to be affiliated by gravity and to have formed in a similar fashion) we've observed to date. Considering the forces required to make so many quasars, not to mention across such a vast span of space, this is freaking amazing.

Now this is a fun development. The inevitable result of this is that we'll start seeing new forms of matter at extremely low temperatures. Now the headline at The Verge is a little bombastic - head over to the Nature article linked at the bottom for a more robust description, but still, it's exciting.

Quantum entanglement is still one of the biggest mysteries in modern physics. I'm thrilled that some really amazing research is being done into it - mostly because the implications of understanding entanglement are immense, but also because it really does peel back the veil a bit and help us understand the nature of the universe.
