Headline isn't phrased well but you'll get the idea. - "First, the much-ballyhooed PRISM program is not a program and not a secret, and anyone who says it is should not be trusted because they don’t know what they’re talking about. PRISM is the name for the government computer system that is used to handle the foreign-intelligence data collected under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
Those rules are very specific. The targeting can only be of foreign nationals outside the United States. These are the restrictions ..."

Last Google Chrome OS Dev Update has added support for the docked mode, a state where the system avoids suspending when the laptop lid is closed while an external display is connected.
When entering this mode, the internal panel is also turned off while external displays are left on.

Two useful shortcuts if you have a Samsung phone
If you have a Samsung phone with physical buttons (and running Jelly Bean) you can long-press

At some point an option was introduced for websites to offer their visitors to have the corresponding Android app installed directly from the website - but I can't remember whether this was related to G+ sign in or Android in general. Anyone?

What's the best way to keep Google NSA from watching your searches?
Bing, or if you are desperate, Yahoo.
Do all your dirty searches at a friend's house.
Use encyclopedias instead of the Internet.
Just accept the fact that using the Internet means giving up your privacy.
Just decide that you know enough already, and never search again.
The texts in the pic:
How to keep Google from watching your searches
- Tin foil beanie cap to foil Google's mind reading algorithms
- Mask, wig, sunglasses and fake beard
- Lip reading shield
- Keyboard-to-computer keystroke encryptor
- Medical gloves to obscure fingerprints and finger stains on keys
- Body language disguiser cloak (aka "Snuggie"
- Crime scene booties to prevent DNA leakage
- Duct tape over webcam

Imminent Chaos. Bruce Judson thinks the education industry is totally unprepared for the disruption that is about to hit them. "There is a clear pattern to the digital disruption of industries: Change happens slowly and then quickly. The massive shift to ebooks, is one example: about a year after the launch of the Kindle, change in consumer behavior occurred at a pace that far exceeded anyone's expectations."
"Rapid change begins in the easiest niche and then flows outward. It's happening here. Indeed, it's far easier to offer an online degree in computer science than in English literature."
"The pace and magnitude of change is driven by the benefits available to consumers. In this case, the benefits are potentially extraordinary."
"At the start of digital disruption new companies often partner with existing content providers to... more »

Suk. Den Discovery-producerede "How the universe works" er lysår foran. Om jeg så må sige. Blandt andet fordi den formidler ægte undren og begejstring - i modsætning til Hawking, der mest virker som om han bare vil beundres og i øvrigt synes, at vi alle sammen er latterlige

Just picking this one out as I am really pleased with it. The location is Fontmell Magna and I was walking along the downs away from this scene. The sun had gone in but then it came out and voila!

Internet Shattered: Spies, Spooks, and Disgust
http://lauren.vortex.com/archive/001042.html
I've spent literally my entire adult life (and even before) working on Internet technologies and policies, one way or another, reaching back to early ARPANET days at UCLA -- a project rooted in Department of Defense funding, it's worthwhile to remember.
Over that time, there have been many related high points and low points, events joyful or upsetting, but never -- not even close -- have I felt so completely, utterly disgusted with a situation associated with the Net as I am today.
The apparently true facts we're learning about our own government's spying abuses against its own citizens are bad enough (http://lauren.vortex.com/archive/001040.html). But we also are faced with stomaching the incredibly hypocritical and disingenuous ... more »

From +David Drummond, Chief Legal Officer: We cannot say this more clearly—the government does not have access to Google servers—not directly, or via a back door, or a so-called drop box. Nor have we received blanket orders of the kind being discussed in the media. It is quite wrong to insinuate otherwise. We provide user data to governments only in accordance with the law. Our legal team reviews each and every request, and frequently pushes back when requests are overly broad or don’t follow the correct process. And we have taken the lead in being as transparent as possible about government requests for user information.

Good old-fashioned journo throwdown here, ladies & gents. CNet has credible-sounding sources, pokes sharp objects at pieces of the “PRISM” story.

I have to say that I agree with +Michael Arrington
"what I would like to see right now is for people at these internet companies to stand up and say the truth, all of it, about their dealings with the NSA.
It doesn’t matter if it’s the CEOs or lower level employees. It can be anonymous or on the record. Unless that Washington Post presentation is a fraud, then a lot of people in Silicon Valley know what’s going on, or parts of what’s going on. They have a duty to stand up to the government, and their employers, and tell the world the truth".

Last Week In Turkey
I don't know how many people heard this, but there's an uprising here. Whole thing started because there were some people who didn't wan't a mall in the middle of the city instead of the only green left there.
But the uprising is not about that. The uprising is about the response of the government to those protestors. The police came, with pepper sprays and tried to bully people away from the park. When other people joined the event, there were a couple thousand people. They were singing, dancing and enjoying in the park.
For two consecutive days, police attacked those camping in the park at 5 a.m while they were asleep. Tear gas canisters and hand-granades were thrown inside the tents. Police then proceeded to burn those tents and the personal belongings of the campers.
After the protestors started to run away, did the... more »

Piraeus (or Peiraieus) was the ancient port of Athens throughout the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods and in fact consisted of three separate harbours - Kantharos, Zea, and Munichia. The first was the largest and used for commercial activity, whilst part of Kantharos and the other two smaller harbours were reserved for military use to house the massive Athenian fleet which allowed the city to be one of the most powerful players in Greece and the wider Mediterranean throughout antiquity.

A thorough review of any Android device should include information about update frequency. I love my original Galaxy Note but I could certainly not give the extended experience of owning it more than three stars (at the very most). Samsung is fully living up to their reputation as being obsessed with new phones and completely uninterested in their "old" products.
