The Northen Lights

Iceland provides ground to norse mythology and life to folkloric tales and legends of what can not be. Yet witnessing these sanctuaries of natural beauty at times when the light is nothing short of magic, makes it all come alive. Imagine a Viking boat landing on a beach of volcanic black sand covered with crystalline ice formations only to behold his first auroral displays, at a time science had no answer to this phenomenon. What would you think, what would you do?

According to Norse mythology, auroras are caused by light reflecting off the shields of virgin warriors, the Valkiries. For others, auroras represented a Dance of the Spirits. The name itself is that of a Roman goddess. Even if modern science can today explain this phenomenon, beholding it remains supernatural. I much prefer the pagan representation.___The Northen Lights
