"The Confederados represent a human treasure trove for modern-day linguists. Throughout the past century and a half, scholars have puzzled over what the Southerners of the Civil War era actually sounded like. The Brazilian descendants’ English, in the words of one latter-day rebel, has been “preserved in aspic”; in its purist form, it stands virtually frozen in time, reflecting the pronunciations and speech patterns of their forebears, dating from the third quarter of the 19th century."

'They are approaching middle age with stories as complicated as the two countries that gave them life. Growing up with the face of the enemy, they were spat on, ridiculed, beaten. They were abandoned, given away to relatives or sold as cheap labor. The families that kept them often had to hide them or shear off their telltale blond or curly locks. Some were sent to reeducation or work camps, or ended up homeless and living on the streets. They were called “bui doi,” which means “the dust of life.” '

"Critics note that if a person manages to get through high school and avoid drugs, crime and parenting outside of marriage, it’s often possible to escape poverty. Fair enough. But if you’re one of the one-fifth of children in West Virginia born with drugs or alcohol in your system, if you ingest lead from peeling paint as a toddler, if your hearing or vision impairments aren’t detected, if you live in a home with no books in a gang-ridden neighborhood with terrible schools — in all these cases, you’re programmed for failure as surely as children of professionals are programed for success.

So when kids in poverty stumble, it’s not quite right to say that they “failed.” Often, they never had a chance."

So far, the hunt has required a knowledge of number theory, philosophy and classical music. An interest in both cyberpunk literature and the Victorian occult has also come in handy as has an understanding of Mayan numerology."

"Perhaps the most distinguishing characteristic of money, after all, is its fungibility, the fact that it can be used to buy not just food but anything. During the chaos in the monkey cage, Chen saw something out of the corner of his eye that he would later try to play down but in his heart of hearts he knew to be true. What he witnessed was probably the first observed exchange of money for sex in the history of monkeykind. (Further proof that the monkeys truly understood money: the monkey who was paid for sex immediately traded the token in for a grape.)"

"Every day, dozens of stray and unwanted pets are put down in Central Florida. In Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties, more than 48,000 dogs and cats were euthanized in the past two years, show records reviewed by the Orlando Sentinel. Across the state last year, more than 200,000 shelter animals were euthanized or died before they could be adopted.

Many were old, injured or dangerous. But thousands were unwanted — dropped off because their owner had a baby or was moving or simply got tired of the pet."

Many animals are able to perform basic “doggy paddling” to save themselves from drowning, but the apes studied were swimming quite comfortably. A chimpanzee and an orangutan raised in captivity with plenty of exposure to water have mastered the ability to swim. In addition to utilizing the breast stroke, they even hold their breath to swim underwater. It is the first time that a non-human primates have been filmed swimming with such ease.

Researchers speculate that swimming was once an evolutionary advantage, though it was lost when the ancestor of modern apes moved to the trees. While it appears the innate ability remains in apes, humans have been the only ones known to make use of it.
