Trey Ratcliff8,771,807Join Me in London for a fun and free photowalk! See http://www.stuckincustoms.com/2015/01/31/london-photowalk-feb-14-3-pm/ for more! Many Grand Prizes, including the DJI Inspire 1 Quadcopter!  http://www.dji.com/product/inspire-1 The last one we did 5 years ago in 2010 was Absolutely Amazing, and I want to do it again with y'all! I am SO Excited for this event.  It will be quite strange to come back from the remote bits of sensory-deprived Antarctica to the opposite-world of sensory-overload London! If you've never been to a photowalk before, no worries. Come, bring a friend or your family, get a camera in everyone's hands, and yes, mobile phones and things like this are perfectly fine! :)  We'll combine this one with a really fun photo contest, and there are more details on that below. The Deets: - Facebook Event Page: http://goo.gl/xOSgZk  – Hashtag: #TRLondon2015 – Time Start: Saturday, February 14, 3 PM – Time End: Probably around 6 PM at a pub where we can all buy drinks, hang out, etc. We can keep on taking pictures in the bar! haha :) – Location Start: South Bank right outside the National Theatre (Google Map – http://goo.gl/DYx7iu and How to get to the National Theatre: http://goo.gl/v1hl5k ) – Location End: Slug and Lettuce Bar -  http://goo.gl/djxIMK – Route: http://goo.gl/SwJMRm – Plan: I’ll say hello to everyone and give everyone some artistic and technical goals for the day. I’ll talk through my camera setup and discuss the whole plan for the evening. Then we’ll all walk around like a huge centipede to find our photographic muses for the day! I’ll stop 5 or so times and we’ll all congeal into a slime-mold at which point I’ll set up for a formal shot and talk about my settings, framings, what I’m trying to communicate with the shot, etc. You are ALWAYS welcome to ask me questions any time… Please don’t hesitate! :) – Grand Prize: 5 Unlimited Shopping Sprees in the new Stuck In Customs store at http://store.stuckincustoms.com  – Everything in there that is downloadable can be yours! :) (About $3,000 in prizes) – How to Win: Take an interesting photo of a fellow PhotoWalker (or several PhotoWalkers) and then post it to Any Social Media with the #TRLondon2015 hashtag. Be creative and try new things! Get close, get far, get low, get high (hehe), get interesting subject matter in the background, etc. Have fun with it — you can take and post and share as many photos as you like! Of course, all the time we’ll be taking photos of other things too, the amazing buildings, landscapes, bridges, and the like, but only the photos of fellow PhotoWalkers will be for the prize. I know photographers often really enjoy taking “Street Photos” of other people but sometimes can be a bit shy or afraid to ask. Well not here, you all have permission…it’s open season! :) – How I choose the 5 winners: I’ll scan all social media about a week after the event for that #TRLondon2015 tag and choose 5 of the photos that I think are the most interestinTrey Ratcliff London PhotoWalk 2015! Everything in Its Right Place

It’s been a little more than a quarter since I took on leadership of a newly formed team, which we’ve christened SPS: Streams, Photos, and Sharing.

In that short time, I’ve had some time to reflect on the products we’ve built over the last few years, and also the opportunity to oversee the launch of our new Google Photos product. I’ve concluded that it’s time for a “pivot”... or more precisely time to talk more openly about a pivot that’s been underway for some time (and in fact is reflected in the name of the new team). We're going to continue focusing Google+ on helping users connect around the interest they love, and retire it as the mechanism by which people share and engage within other Google products.

Bill Campbell, our very close friend, died this morning.  A man with a huge heart, who hugged everyone he met with, was more than a mentor.  He helped us build Google and in countless ways made our success possible.  We started with him as an external coach but he quickly became the internal management expert.  He attended our staff meetings, met with management, and spent countless hours with our leadership.  He helped build our Board of Directors, and helped build our culture.  He worked very very closely with our Founders in every possible way.

His contribution to the success of Google and now Alphabet is incalculable.  His legacy is the smile that he created on everyones face, and the great leaders of the valley whom he coached.  Bill was a truly gifted man, and the world lost a great leader this morning.

Great story from +Louis Gray (and typical Sundar!)

Buzzfeed on +Sundar Pichai, the Google CEO you HAVE Heard Of

Almost five years ago, I ran into Sundar in the stairwells of Google, having just joined the company. I was holding a MacBook Air, which I'd been given as a Noogler. Knowing he ran ChromeOS, I told him I wished I could be carrying around a Chrome laptop instead. He was apologetic, saying he agreed, and was working on it.

By 2013, when the Pixel was announced, I traded IM's with Sundar just hours after the public launch. I congratulated him on the launch, and his response, to my surprise, was a humble one... "Do you have one yet?" Surprised, I said no, as it was the first day. He responded, "I'm so sorry. You were supposed to be on the list."

I paused, saying, no, it was fine. I'd get one soon. He reiterated, "You were supposed to be on the list. Contact +Caesar Sengupta and he will get you one." Less than an hour later, I had my hands on the Chromebook PIxel and I haven't used a Mac at work since.

Google is incredibly lucky to have Sundar as CEO. I bring up the story because while it's a small one, and I'm just one person, I know Sundar is friendly, approachable, humble and focused - all attributes necessary to earn and succeed the role he's found himself in today. Now, all of you know Sundar already, but this article will help you know him more, and see the person we already knew well.

Thanks +Mathew Honan for the piece.___Great story from +Louis Gray (and typical Sundar!)

Enjoy.

Today we’re making the Nik Collection available to everyone, for free.

Photo enthusiasts all over the world use the Nik Collection to get the best out of their images every day. As we continue to focus our long-term investments in building incredible photo editing tools for mobile, including Google Photos and Snapseed, we’ve decided to make the Nik Collection desktop suite available for free, so that now anyone can use it.

The Nik Collection is comprised of seven desktop plug-ins that provide a powerful range of photo editing capabilities -- from filter applications that improve color correction, to retouching and creative effects, to image sharpening that brings out all the hidden details, to the ability to make adjustments to the color and tonality of images.

Starting March 24, 2016, the latest Nik Collection will be freely available to download: Analog Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro, Viveza, HDR Efex Pro, Sharpener Pro and Dfine. If you purchased the Nik Collection in 2016, you will receive a full refund, which we’ll automatically issue back to you in the coming days.

We’re excited to bring the powerful photo editing tools once only used by professionals to even more people now. ___Enjoy.

It has been an honor and privilege to work with and learn from this man. Thank you +Amit Singhal for everything.

The Journey Continues…

Dear Friends,

My life has been a dream journey. From a little boy growing up in the Himalayas dreaming of the Star Trek computer, to an immigrant who came to the United States with two suitcases and not much else, to the person responsible for Search at Google, every turn has enriched me and made me a better person.

As I entered the fifteenth year of working at Google, I've been asking myself the question, "what would you want to do for the next fifteen?" The answer has overwhelmingly been: give back to others. It has always been a priority for me to give back to people who are less fortunate, and make time for my family amidst competing work constraints--but on both fronts, I simply want to give and do more.

Now is a good time to make this important life change. Things are in amazing shape. Search is stronger than ever, and will only get better in the hands of an outstanding set of senior leaders who are already running the show day-to-day.

It fills me with pride to see what we have built in the last fifteen years. Search has transformed people’s lives; over a billion people rely on us. Our mission of empowering people with information and the impact it has had on this world cannot be overstated. When I started, who would have imagined that in a short period of fifteen years, we would tap a button, ask Google anything and get the answer. Today, it has become second nature to us. My dream Star Trek computer is becoming a reality, and it is far better than what I ever imagined.

I love Google. It is a company that believes in doing the right thing, a company that believes in doing good in the world, a company… that cares. I look back at my time here with a profound sense of gratitude that I was a part of building this. Now, with pride, gratitude, and joy in my heart, I need to define my next fifteen years. I am eager to see what kind of impact I can make philanthropically, and of course, to spend more time with my family--especially with my wife who I miss spending time with given our incredibly busy lives, and our son who will go to college soon, leaving an empty nest behind.

Feb 26 will be my last day at Google. My relationships are the most important thing I’ve accumulated in life and I’d love for that to continue. Please do drop me a line occasionally and we can have a cup of tea.

Took delivery of the new Tesla Model X on the last day of the year! After waiting 3 years, I was pretty excited.

The car is amazing, beautiful, innovative... and still has quite a few glitches and bugs they're working through. But just like my experience with the early Model S, I've got full confidence Tesla will figure it out (both for me and in general.) As an early adopter, I get to help!

I’m really thrilled about today’s launch of the new Google+. More details from +Eddie Kessler (https://goo.gl/fLXk05) and +Luke Wroblewski.

I’m particularly proud of the thoughtfulness that went into this overhaul, which is in the same spirit as the recently launched Google Photos. With Photos, we started with a clear and persistent dedication to the user, and then the team put awesome technology to work to bring an amazing product experience to life. In the same vein, the team looked thoughtfully at what was working (and not) in Google+, and reinvented the product to focus on the parts that shine -- as a place where people can delve into their interests. And both the native apps and web experience (desktop and mobile) are much faster and more beautiful than before.

Dive into the new Google+
As +Eddie Kessler shared this afternoon (http://goo.gl/2QjBGx), we’ve spent lots of time talking to people who are passionate about Google+. We visited them in their homes, we invited them into early testing communities and we learned more about how and why they use Google+. The predominant answer? Having a great place to keep up with and talk about their interests. From Astrophotography (goo.gl/HRQmIh) to Wild Hummingbirds (https://goo.gl/6FscI6), people are not only discovering amazing things, but meeting others who share their passions as well.

Today we’re taking a big step toward making Google+ an even better place for your interests. To do so, we’ve drastically simplified nearly every aspect of the product. You’ll see this clearly in our new navigation centered around Collections and Communities. Collections let you immerse yourself in content about topics like surfing (https://goo.gl/vvv5QD) or tiny tilt-shift photography scenes (goo.gl/nWyicL) . Communities enable groups of people with the same interests to join up and geek out on anything from Game of Thrones (goo.gl/aaqtgq) to Painting (goo.gl/kmlM7m). With Collections and Communities, discovering amazing things is simple: just follow or join whatever happens to pique your interests.

But we didn’t stop with Collections and Communities; the new Google+ also makes it easier to post, search, connect, and keep up with great content in a fully redesigned home stream. And we’ve worked hard to make our new web experience load fast and work beautifully on devices of all sizes.

You can preview the new Google+ on the web today by signing in and clicking “Let’s go” when you see the prompt. (And since not every feature of Google+ has made its way into this new design, for now, you can toggle back to the classic Google+ with one click in the bottom left-hand corner.) In the coming days, we’ll roll out updated apps for Android and iOS.

While this is an exciting new beginning for us, we’re definitely not done yet. We got here by listening and learning, and will continue doing so. Please visit our Help Center (https://goo.gl/gWsFeh) or drop us a line in our support community (https://goo.gl/eMFVj) to share your thoughts, questions, and more. ___I’m really thrilled about today’s launch of the new Google+. Also, per my post on July 27th, we’ve been busy putting “Everything in its right place.” (https://goo.gl/1JDajS). These changes include work toward retiring Google+ profiles as people’s identities across Google. The new “About Me” page (aboutme.google.com) makes it really straightforward to control how you appear across Google services, whether you use Google+ or not (see this VentureBeat story for more details: http://goo.gl/5RIiyx). This groundwork will soon make it easy for people to use products like YouTube without joining Google+.

Enjoy the new products and let us know what you think!

Another early takeaway - battery life is extremely important, but fast recharging is perhaps even more important.

Thanks for your patience and excited for this launch!

Introducing Google+ Collections on iOS

Google+ users on Android and the web are using Collections to connect with others around shared interests ranging from Homebrewing https://goo.gl/llrjAO, Climbing Junkie Photos https://goo.gl/Jeaaqr to Magical, Mystical Mountains https://goo.gl/OCM4mm and Marine Life https://goo.gl/4ISRZz. Today, we’re excited to announce Collections on iOS.

Create a Collection about something you’re interested in; make as many as you’d like;  and don’t worry about over sharing since people can follow just the Collections they like.

Google+ users who have already created Collections asked us for the ability to customize who can see their Collections and if they could add taglines to describe them. We recently announced these features on Android and the web; today they are also available on iOS. To better explore the wide range of Collections https://goo.gl/437uWV already created, we announced last week that you can search for Collections on Google+ on Android as well.

Thanks to everyone for these ideas. Please keep the feedback coming - we’re listening. Have questions about Collections?  Check out our Help Center http://goo.gl/zyIVMH or join this community for Help, Tips & Tricks: http://goo.gl/meRk8j.

To get Collections in your Google+ iOS app, download it here: https://goo.gl/0aYo0Y.

We can’t wait to see what Collections you create!___Thanks for your patience and excited for this launch!

Sorry, tech press. Google+ is alive and well.

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/Z6sQ6w )

A chorus of tech journalists this week is saying that Google is phasing out its social network, Google+.

Where did they get this juicy nugget of information? Well, they made it up. And I'll tell you why.

But first, let's look at what the press is saying and compare that with reality:

Four years ago when we conceived of the “Google+ Project”, we made it clear that our goals were always two-fold: Google+ aspired to be both a “platform layer that unified Google’s sharing models”, and a product / stream / app in its own right.

This was a well-intentioned goal, but as realized it led to some product experiences that users sometimes found confusing. For instance, and perhaps most controversially, integration with YouTube implied that leaving a comment on YouTube (something users had obviously been doing successfully for years) suddenly and unexpectedly required “joining Google+.”

We decided it’s time to fix this, not only in YouTube, but across a user’s entire experience at Google. We want to formally retire the notion that a Google+ membership is required for anything at Google… other than using Google+ itself.

Some of the consequences of this shift in thinking have already been deployed. Others we’re rolling out as fast as possible (e.g. the changes to YouTube we referenced today). And many more will roll out over the rest of the year.

What does this mean for Google+ the product? Relieved of the notion of integrating with every other product at Google, Google+ can now focus on doing what it’s already doing quite well: helping millions of users around the world connect around the interest they love. Aspects of the product that don’t serve this agenda have been, or will be, retired. But you’ll also see a slew of improvements that make this use case shine (like the recent launch of Collections - https://plus.google.com/collections/featured).

It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how this strategy has played out as realized in the recent Google Photos launch, a product which in many ways embodies and telegraphs the changes discussed above. Google Photos not only doesn’t require a Google+ account, but as much of the functionality as possible doesn’t even require an account at all. It was important to me that when we launched Google Photos, we stressed the product implements sharing by any means a user prefers… without compromise or agenda. This is the right thing for users and the feedback and usage has been extremely validating.

I’m excited to share this strategy with the world, excited about what it means for Google+, and most of all for all of Google’s users.___

More context on the right-placing of Photos...

I wanted to clarify a couple of points regarding yesterday’s announcement (https://goo.gl/TL0l6j) and provide some additional context:

1. The great photo and video sharing service that’s part of Google+ is unaffected. You can continue to post photos and videos, and your followers will be able to comment and +1 as before. No change.

2. All of the photos, videos, and albums you have already shared on Google+, including their posts, comments, and +1s are also unaffected. An easy way to find these is to visit the Photos tab of your Profile page.

3. The private photo management component of Google+, which includes backup, editing, creations, private album management (album management for shared content is still available on Google+), and sharing to other apps, is being replaced by Google Photos.

I sincerely appreciate for many of you #3 is still a hard pill to swallow. And I promise we don’t take decisions like this one lightly. The reality is that maintaining both Google+ Photos (the private photo management component of Google+) and Google Photos poses several challenges. Most notably, it is confusing to users why we have two offerings that virtually do the same thing, and it means our team needs to divide its focus rather than working on building a single, great user experience.

We are working very hard to bring all the best features of Google+ Photos to Google Photos, and this focus will allow us to deliver even more features at a much faster pace.___More context on the right-placing of Photos...

I continue to be extremely excited about the building momentum for +Google Photos.  If you're not using it yet, you should be!  Time to make the move...

Goodbye Google+ Photos, hello +Google Photos!

In May, we launched Google Photos as the home for all your photos and videos. With Google Photos you can store unlimited high quality photos and videos for free, find photos fast, and see them organized by what matters to you. Plus, you can bring moments to life and share anywhere with anyone.

In an effort to ensure everyone has the best photos experience we can deliver, on August 1st we’ll start to shut down Google+ Photos -- initially on Android, and soon thereafter on the Web and iOS.

If you’re still using Google+ Photos, now is a great time to make the switch. You may have seen a prompt in Google+ Photos on Android with a link to download the new Google Photos. Don’t worry, all your photos and videos will still be saved and available after you switch to the new, stand-alone Google Photos app. With the new app you’ll still be able to backup, edit, and share your photos and videos, with unlimited storage, automatic organization, and more.

Download the new Google Photos today for uninterrupted access to all your photos, videos and albums.  If you don’t update to the new Google Photos, Google+ Photos on Android will soon stop working, but your photos and videos will still remain safely stored and available via http://photos.google.com or for export using Google Takeout.

With +Tim O'Reilly and +Steven Levy collaborating...  This is sure to be an awesome event.

We just unveiled the project I've been working on for the past six months or so (really, the past couple of years, but only explicitly the past six months), a new event called Next:Economy, also known as WTF? What's the Future of Work?  It's a look at robots, AI, and the on-demand economy, and what they tell us about the future of work, the shape of corporations, and the issues we should be grappling with now if we want these profound changes to come out for the best.

My co-host for the event is Steven Levy of Medium. While the speaker list is still preliminary, it tells the story of what we're going after. Explore the speaker pages - I've loaded them with quotes from the speakers, which will help you understand in advance where they are coming from. Over the next few weeks and months, we'll be curating an online conversation, with lots of great reading and viewing, to engage with these ideas, whether or not you are coming to the event.___With +Tim O'Reilly and +Steven Levy collaborating...  This is sure to be an awesome event.
