Inequality goes Digital. Hmmm.

How Facebook, Apple and Twitter are ending online equality.

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/WtxBie )

The latest trend in social networking is the rise of elitism.

It's not an elitism that's emerging spontaneously from the everyday social interaction of users. Facebook, Apple and Twitter are intentionally devising a new online world of inequality. This new social media elitism is being trotted out as a "feature."

It's sad, too. Egalitarianism used to be the signature attribute of new media.

While old media was a one-to-many affair (whoever was rich or famous had access to the TV cameras or the newspaper headlines while the rest of us were forced to sit in silence and passively receive their communications), new media was participatory and engendered equality. Even the most self-aggrandizing actor or preening musical diva had to set up a Myspace or Twitter or Facebook account and use the same tools and features as everybody else.

Of course, we all haven't enjoyed complete equality in our reach or influence on social networks. Famous people have generally had larger audiences, and therefore more influence. But when the rich and/or famous have talked to us, we've been able to talk back. New media was different from old media in that it was a level playing field, where all of us -- rich and poor, famous and obscure -- used the same set of social media features, tools and interaction spaces.

Now Facebook, Apple and Twitter are intentionally undoing all of that.

Here's what's going on:

"The notion of a 'first' page ranking in Google is rapidly dying..." - +David Amerland

That pretty much wraps it up the impact of the move to mobile and semantic search.

Tipping Point for Mobile Internet

We've been told, for some time now, that mobile is the way forward  for websites and that includes how websites are found through search and how commercial activity takes place.

Google has made a mobile-friendly website one of the ranking metrics in search. For much of the developing world web-enabled phones and smartphones were the first points of access when it came to the internet. Now a developed country, like the UK where home computer ownership exceeds 80% (http://goo.gl/PH67ML) has reached a tipping point where smartphones, for the first time, overtake PCs and laptops as the means through which the web is accessed.

This is important because mobile search is mostly Voice and 100% localized and personalized, device specific and search-history dependent - fully semantic, in other words. The notion of a 'first' page ranking in Google is rapidly dying because the first page is different for each person and each search query, particularly on mobile devices.

It also means that relevance, trustworthiness and authority of a website (and by association the business linked to it) trumps SEO activities intended to just boost ranking in search. ___"The notion of a 'first' page ranking in Google is rapidly dying..." - +David Amerland

A Visual Introduction to Machine Learning

In machine learning, computers apply statistical learning techniques to automatically identify patterns in data. These techniques can be used to make highly accurate predictions.

Keep scrolling. Using a data set about homes, we will create a machine learning model to distinguish homes in New York from homes in San Francisco.

This is very, very cool and well done.

LiveText starts with a stupid premise. And that makes it brilliant.

Of all the messaging apps, Livetext is the first in a while to get me interested.

It really sounds vapid on first take. What a waste to stream video without audio. But audio requires constant attention and interaction. Video can be passive, ambient, adding to the experience but not requiring full and constant attention.

The silence also means you don't have to worry about your conversation being overheard.

While the video is synchronous, your interaction doesn't have to be. Yes, it's going to waste a lot of bandwidth but that's not a worry in our future.

Imagine a live link to your buddy or significant other or family member or coworker. That extra context as you interact back and forth could add a lot of value and insight. Are they there? Are they happy? ... more »

Nothing wrong with an opinion. Unless it's really a misconception.

#ft

No, It's Not Your Opinion. You're Just Wrong

In other words, you can form an opinion in a bubble, and for the first couple of decades of our lives we all do. However, eventually you are going to venture out into the world and find that what you thought was an informed opinion was actually just a tiny thought based on little data and your feelings. Many, many, many of your opinions will turn out to be uninformed or just flat out wrong. No, the fact that you believed it doesn’t make it any more valid or worthwhile, and nobody owes your viewpoint any respect simply because it is yours.

You can be wrong or ignorant. It will happen. Reality does not care about your feelings. Education does not exist to persecute you. The misinformed are not an ethnic minority being oppressed.

My opinion is that this post is awesome. #reason  ___Nothing wrong with an opinion. Unless it's really a misconception.

SEO Argument
Is an inbound link to your root domain always more valuable than a link to say a targeted category page?

How about if the source of the inbound link is has more credibility in the category than in general? How about if the audience of the referring site is better matched to the category page?

My contention is that a targeted link should be better in a semantic world where topical authority begins to mean something. But does that world exist yet?

Reputation Scores to Replace PageRank?

A second patent in a series of patents that look like they are a replacement for Agent Rank, which seemed to disappear with the end of authorship markup at Google+.  This Authorized user approach would still use author images to indicate content from specific users of a social network in response to a specific query.

This kind of reputation scoring could potentially be a replacement for PageRank.  The snippets that would accompany images of indidividuals would come from user profiles and user posts, comments, and responses in Google+.___Don't deny the Reputation Economy just yet. What do you get if you merge a Market with a Network? Maybe a Unicorn.

I really love that this is akin to crowdsourcing but on another level. Rather than the relatively faceless hoards you hire on Fiverr and Uber et. al., reputation and level of complexity and transaction value are amped way up. This really starts to resemble the Reputation Economy I have been envisioning for the past 4 years.

Interesting outgrowth, in my mind of the TINM model. Read more about that here: http://jarche.com/2012/05/networks-thrive-in-complexity/

The Evolution of Networks
From Social to Markets

A deeper, more purposeful, market specific types of networks.
"Social Networks Were The Last 10 Years. Market Networks Will Be The Next 10."

I really like the six characteristics the author (An early stage VC) indentifies in the article for successful market networks.
--> Market Networks target more complex services
However, the highest value services — like event planning and home remodeling — are neither simple nor objectively judged. They are more involved and longer term. Market networks are designed for these types of services.

--> People Matter
With complex services, each client is unique, and the professional they get matters. Would you hand over your wedding to just anyone? Or your home remodel? The people on both sides of those equations are not interchangeable like they are with Lyft or Uber. Each person brings unique opinions, expertise and relationships to the transaction. A market network is designed to acknowledge that as a core tenet — and provide a solution.

--> Collaboration happens around a project.
For most complex services, multiple professionals collaborate among themselves — and with a client — over a period of time. The SaaS at the center of market networks focuses the action on a project that can take days or years to complete.

--> Market networks help build long-term relationships.
Market networks bring a career’s worth of professional connections online and make them more useful. For years, social networks like LinkedIn and Facebook have helped build long-term relationships. However, until market networks, they hadn’t been used for commerce and transactions.

--> Referrals flow freely.
In these industries, referrals are gold, for both the client and the service professional. The market network software is designed to make referrals simple and more frequent.

--> Market networks increase transaction velocity and satisfaction. By putting the network of professionals and clients into software, the market network increases transaction velocity for everyone. It increases the close rate on proposals and expedites payment. The software also increases customer satisfaction scores, reduces miscommunication and makes the work pleasing and beautiful. Never underestimate pleasing and beautiful.___What do you get if you merge a Market with a Network? Maybe a Unicorn.

What fields of research is Google most interested In? Here is a big clue.

I think it's always interesting to look at Google's research support to divine clues about what research areas the search giant is most interested in.

Here's just the list of Fellowship names from the post.  From that I think  you'll see why it's appropriate to post that list in the Semantic Search Marketing community.

- Natural Language Processing
- Speech Technology
- Distributed Systems
- Machine Learning
- Probabilistic Inference
- Computer Vision
- Computer Networking
- Language Understanding
- Deep Learning
- Statistical Natural Language Processing
- Operating Systems
- Graph Algorithms
- Multilingual Semantic Parsing
- Structured Data Analysis
- Security
