Ғ ΜіснæL Sŧuŧz4,508I rarely do this...In fact, I haven't done a circle share in over a year, and I've never shared this one. But... It's #AmbienTime , and the thing about the folks in this circle: they've all paid their dues with respect to my #AmbienTime  moments. These are the people who, with one or two exceptions, have known me the longest here on G+. They also happen to be the list of people who are either overly medicated, or underly medicated, because they still haven't uncircled me yet, even after all this time. I keep checking, but so far none of these people has gotten tired of my crap enough to go through the effort yet. I don't have the heart to tell them that this suffering won't erase all their past misdeeds and sins, and won't get them into heaven.I spend 99% of my G+ time in this one circle. And one of the people here was insane enough to actually marry me.It's a very diverse group, about as diverse as you can get. Each, though, is wonderfully broken, like magnificent shattered stained-glass murals, each reflects the same sun that alights upon us all, but in uniquely amazing ways that, with the passage of the hours and the seasons, brings a new dazzling display every time I see them online. If these are the only people you ever circle on G+, you will be hooked on G+ for life. And it's proof-positive that quality kicks the crap out of quantity every day of the week. This is my little way of saying, "Thank you" to all of you guys for putting up with me for the last few years. And I take serious pride in knowing that I have the rockin'est circle on G+.+Sque Morgan , up there at the 1:00 spot was my very first friend here. We don't talk much these days, I miss that, but we've both been going through some crap these last few months. I think she's responsible for my meeting about half this circle, people like +Eric Johnson, for example. And I know that after Sque (like a few days) came +Karen Schumacher  and +Debra Dayton , and then +Alvin Stearns and then +Shawn Holster, who I was sure was going to defrock me last month when he announced his annual spring circle cleaning...+Darryl Mouzone I met through an experiment. I decided to add every "suggestion" that G+ made for one week, and he was the only one that made in to this circle, which made the whole exercise a totally worth-while thing to do.2014-09-23 03:17:43431706

Dubie Bacino103,464ENGAGERS CIRCLE - Curated by +Dubie Bacino (11th Edition)This is a circle of truly amazing and creative individuals. Most people are the ones I've been interacting with for years here and on other social networks, mixed in with some new friends I've made recently. All people here are very active on Google+ and worth adding to your circles. They come from different countries and backgrounds, some of them are bloggers and social media professionals, others are artists, musicians, writers, photographers… They are not a shy group by any means. All you have to do is reach out and most of them will reciprocate the engagement. When it comes to #CircleSharing, my practice is to share only two of my circles every month: - ENGAGERS: this is a way of saying thank you to those who have interacted with me in some way (either by plussing, commenting, and/or sharing my posts, or by participating in my communities), and- INSPIRING: mainly photographers, but also other people who I find post original and interesting content. To get into my circles is real simple: either engage with my posts, or keep sharing quality content. Londoners confronted with Dutch black face tradition
Interesting experiment to walk around in a park dressed up as Black Pete / Zwarte Piet, the helper of 'Sinterklaas' who in December goes around handing out presents to children.

Eighty percent of the Dutch population fails to understand that people are hurt by this stereotype. A vocal  minority defend it so aggressively that proponents of a change are bombarded with death wishes...

The discussion in the Netherlands is so heated that during the traditional parade of Sinterklaas some of the Black petes will actually be armed policemen; painted black of course.

Does this look like a proper children festivity or should  it be transformed into a more inclusive, race neutral event?

Free the nipple will release in two days
The movie that is, the movement is well on its way albeit with little success.

The weird thing is it's a battle about the freedom to show an extremely small part of the human body. And even that sentence is incorrect as only the female version of the smallest part imaginable of the human body is 'forbidden'.

In the majority of the US states you can be arrested and fined for showing off a nipple if you're a women that is Even in free haven New York where both genders are allowed to walk around without a top the actors of 'Free the Nipple' were stopped by police as 'the public could have been confused'.

Prudency laws are arbitrary wherever you are, but they are always sexist. Can't show your hair in Saudi-Arabia, can't show your face in Afghanistan, can't show your tits in the... more »

Apple Mini now available with Android 5.0
Nokia is very proud of it's N1 tablet design "Side by side we are better than the iPad mini. We beat them, on every single feature . . . It's really a product you would expect out of Nokia. It is the thinnest device we have ever designed."

But the reality is that it looks very similar to the iPad Mini and it will be built, marketed and sold by Foxconn; the Chinese giant who knows very well how to built Apple products to a high standard.

The design by Nokia isn't the most interesting aspect of this 7.9" Android tablet. That Foxconn will market and sell it itself is. The OEM licenses the name Nokia but is supposed to handle all the rest. A move similar to Acer in the past: slowly getting away from building other people's products.

Specs etc on http://n1.nokia.com/ Expected price $250/ 250 Eur... more »

Googlers: I know you're handy with words but how about some simple math?
Solving 12 : 4 × 3 (see note below) looks easy, but can you multiply the result with 1 + 2 x 3? Pick your answer below and let's see if G+ can solve the kind of 'math' we expect from current primary school students.

Vote for your answer or disagree with the pre-canned ones and provide your own in the comments

note: 12 ÷ 4 * 3 is considered identical to 12 : 4 x 3
note 2: I reworded the question slightly to make clear that you need to multiply the result of the first calculation with the result of the second one.

Thought experiment: what if the Taliban tortured US captives?

Americans torture (rightly or wrongly) captured people.

Some things are not a matter of perspective. But in the mass of analysis floating around, as a citizen it is a valuable thought experiment to flip perspective and see how we would have reacted.

How contagious is suicide?
If you grew up with literature you will have read Goethe's 'Die Leiden des jungen Werthers' (Sorrows of young werther) where the protagonist kills himself dressed in yellow trousers and a blue jacket. The story goes that this was repeated in lots of copycat suicides, Young men, dressed the same way killed themselves leaving a romantic letter.

Later in the 1930's Rezső Seress wrote 'Gloomy Sunday, a dark musical peace which is rumored to have been forbidden by major networks as it was considered to trigger suicides.

The same has been said of Marilyn Monroe's suicide which reportedly was followed by 200 other deaths the same month.

News papers seem to have protocols in place ranging from 'not mentioning any suicide' to at least hiding all practical details. This was recently seen when Robby Williams hanged himself. Most journalist obeyed the code and didn't detail the way he had done it.

Apparently the media believe suicide is contagious so should be hidden from the public. But is it?

Maybe the 'already decided' just copy the method. Dressing up in yellow and blue to make an intellectual connection with Werther is not the same as committing suicide just because you read the book.

Too much pills and alcohol is a sure fire way to kill yourself, but was Marilyn Monroe's death the trigger or just a reason for journalists to look at suicide statistics?

A temporal effect is easy to understand. Once someone you feel connected to, commits suicide it could well be that last nudge to do it yourself. And the chosen method could be copied once known. Partly because of the celebrity effect, partly because it's a working example.

But would these same people live forever without that example? Is suicide contagious or does it just concentrate events and methods? ___

No Nipple
Last week I posted about the movement and the film #FreetheNipple. I tried to shed some light on that weird puritanism where female nipples are considered the sign of the devil  / the most desirable thing on earth making it impossible for women to walk around without a t-shirt, breastfeed in public or get a tan on the beach.

To illustrate my point I used a photo of a nipple with some of the surrounding breast. And yes, after a few days Google censored it as breasts are fine, but nipples are evil.

The photo below  is allowed. I have posted it before as I found it utterly humiliating for women and it survived three years on G+ so a digitally mutilated woman is fine by G+ standards.

The censored post can be found in the link below. There seems to be a raging debate within Google as that image has been removed and reinstated several times. Check thedis... more »

What is the most effective profile photo on G+?
Not the most pretty person, nor the best shot, but the one that stands out on the very small scale used in posts and comments. In other words the most recognizable at a glance.

Below just an example of the first eight persons in the list of 'following me' where I blanked the names and descriptions. Who stands out at this miniature level and why and who did you recognize at first glance

Please add your own suggestions for best profile photo from the whole of G+

Google giveth and taketh: is G+ popularity abused as a lobby tool?

The result after three years is that virtual nobodies who got on that Google shortlist became millionaires in terms of followers. A limited success as on other platforms like Twitter or Facebook they didn't get these huge followings. Worse, their engagement even on their own G+ platform is often low per follower.

The most interesting thing though is when they for whatever reason get removed from that SUL. They instantly flatline or even lose followers. The example below is just that. An example as there are so many others which showed this same pattern.

From a daily growth in the thousands thanks to the 'automatic' subscription back to daily figures much lower than mine and other 'real' G plussers who only win new followers when outsiders read and really appreciate our content. So called organic growth.

The amazing thing is that the moment Google 'taketh away' people start unsubscribing at a higher rate than the new influx. Imagine you had a platform with 3.5 million followers like in this case. Are you really successful and most importantly independent if the moment Google stops pushing you and getting you thousands of new followers a day, you actually go down by a thousand?

And yet this is normal. The figures you see for followers on G+ are completely inflated by Google itself. The big G giveth and taketh and by doing so can manipulate influence public opinion in a major way. How independent are you if your voice to the world is in the hands of your G+ overlords deciding who is on the SUL?

There is a raging debate about the 'raison d'être' of G+ as you can see in the +Chris Messina +Mike Elgan debate. Is it an identity service, a way to profile for better ads, the glue for other Google services, or a failed experiment kept alive because nobody has the guts to kill it

What would you do if you had an army of evangelists for all things Google and you could make or break them by artificially promoting them to stardom? Would you kill the cheapest lobby organization of the world?

Facebook to put an alcohol lock on future selfies

No need to call in your right to be forgotten, facebook will prevent you from posting with a clear warning.
Once the machine detects you look drunk, you will be asked to double check your post.

Bad news for the likes of Paula Abdul and Lindsey Lohan, but what about a future Vincent van Gogh? Would he have been harassed by additional security questions while uploading his self portraits?

Facebook is developing artificial intelligence that will ask if users really want to post pictures of shameful drunken selfies. The "deep learning" system will analyse photos and other Facebook actions, and identify potentially embarrassing elements, and ask, "Are you sure you want your boss and your mother to see this?"

Their ultimate goal is to make a "digital assistant" that will analyze every single action you take on Facebook, and give you notifications when, well, whenever you're about to do something stupid, though they describe it more diplomatically than that.___Facebook to put an alcohol lock on future selfies

Prudency laws are arbitrary wherever you are, but they are always sexist. Can't show your hair in Saudi-Arabia, can't show your face in Afghanistan, can't show your tits in the US. All true, but only for women, never for men.

Heck, nowadays you can't even breastfeed in public in most of the Western world. As good as 100% of men grew up on breast milk, but almost universally they don't want to see these same nipples again. Or I should precise here: not for free.

Nipples went commercial. They made it big time after feeding the boys. Billions are made by showing these forbidden extremities, but we call them porn. Not the breasts: they are fine for reasons unknown but these little tipping points trigger censors all over the world.

Why do we live in a society that's afraid of getting aroused by the same breasts that fed them once? Is it the incentious thought of being attracted to 'mamas'?

High chance that this post will disappear as Google, like other social media is governed by the worst of American censors. I made a copy of the text and will repost with a 10x10 pixel blur.....

Go back thirty years and imagine a European forum and my text would have been irrelevant and the photo one of so many...

We - the west that is - collectively followed the Taliban. The world went backwards as a whole.

Who can sing or hum this along and why can't we?

Mozart was understandably sad as rumor has it that he was thinking about his own death while writing this requiem. One of the most memorable pieces of music and yet so simple. A lamenting choir...

Trying to sing it or even humming along is difficult as your vocal chords are challenged without you realizing it. Try it. Unless you're a professional singer you will lose your voice even humming it. If you manage singing along at the right key you should do audition. Most of us end speechless..

How can it be that music that's so close to our heart and sounds so majestic and yet so easy, can be so difficult to reproduce by our own voices?

Wenn der Kummer naht, liegen wüst die Gärten der Seele,

Yes, it is possible to have genuine online friends, we miss you Dieter
Two years ago, +Dieter Mueller  played an experiment where he deleted his G+ account in order to show the superficial nature of online friendships and what he called the ‘big data cow’. His experiment failed miserably when scores and scores of people contacted him to know was he okay and to come back and join us again.
Sadly, Dieter has departed for good this time. In true Dieter style, and in his own words he has stage managed his own death. I’ve no doubt he is above there now looking down at us all and smiling, but I’m sad we didn’t get a chance to say goodbye. *Social network analysis: can you do without a real tool?)
If you happen to have any interest at all in social media you should trial +NOD3x. If you happen to be professionally related to social media it's just a must have.
I believe +Lee Smallwood has a special deal running until the end of this week. Contact him for more details but do remember that every G+ user can get free access while every professional will see a ROI whatever Lee is currently offering as a discount on the Pro version.

What is NOD3x and Why was it developed?

Four  years ago [Aug 2010] http://nod3x.com  was in it's infancy and it wasn't publicly available to use then. I basically developed it to help me answer our client's increasing volume of questions relating to online social media discussions.

Then, during the London riots of 2011, I wanted to see if it was possible to predict which direction the rioters were heading based on people Tweeting about what was happening in their location.

We stored and processed the tweets, plotting the locations of those people posting a map in real-time and were able to determine the different directions that the rioters were heading.

Over the period of 8 days we processed just under 3 million Tweets.

We now process 10-12 million tweets daily...

After this, my mind went a bit crazy pondering on all the what ifs...:

• Do people ask different questions around a topic across different social platforms?

• Do men and women have different topical points of view, across different platforms?

• Does the same person write posts relating to specific topics differently from one social platform to another?

• Is it possible to track trends based upon what people discuss online as opposed to just keyword search behaviour?

• Is there a correlation between online search and social behaviour?

• Can we monitor the impact that media has on everyday people across social media, and vice versa?

• Is it possible to track sentiment relating to public opinions when government’s change or introduce new legislation?

The short answer to the above is - YES!

The task was and continues to be a challenging one - and we’re not finished yet...

Over the course of the last three years we've gone through three revisions visibly and 100's algorithmically. We now have proprietary algorithms in place that not only collects data and processes it but analyses it in real-time 20 times faster producing the following insights (amongst others):

• Influencer analysis
• Opinion analysis
• Location analysis
• Language detection
• Gender detection
• Which network has the most volume of related posts
• Best time of day to post
• Best day of the week to post
• Popular hashtags

These results are presented as a real-time infographic. Why did I call it a real-time infographic? Well, for me (as pretty as they are to look at), once you've collated the data to be designed as an infographic - it's all ready out of date! (Let alone when the infographic is ready to be published!)

Homophiliy Tech ~ "birds of a feather do flock together"  and they also attract others to the flock...

The NOD3x Dashboard displays all of the information that you'd want/expect to find within an infographic, what I've coined as  _swish_ of SNA and Viral: Who, What, Where, When, Why and How (+David Amerland call's them 4Vs of Semantic Search in his book http://davidamerland.com/google-semantic-search.html - must read book if you haven't already...)

The future of NOD3x
Over the course of the next month, we're unveiling some new tech, processes and functionality that we hope you'll approve of.

This new 'stuff' implements what we've codenamed swish and looks at the behavioural correlations between social and search...

Right now, our focus is on developing a unified suite of #SNA  tools that come together as a complete Social Media Research, Analysis and Marketing application.

Thanks to everyone for their continued support of our little app - without your feedback and critiques NOD3x wouldn't be where it is now...

Best present for your children: don't teach them what to think, but let them figure out the how, why and if themselves.

The question game!
Teaching kids to ask smart questions

Think about it: A four-year-old asks on average about 400 questions per day, and an adult hardly asks any. Our school system is structured around rewards for regurgitating the right answer, and not asking smart questions - in fact, it discourages asking questions. With the result that as we grow older, we stop asking questions. Yet asking good questions is essential to find and develop solutions, and important skill in innovation, strategy, and leadership. So why do we stop asking questions - and more importantly, why don't we train each other, and our future leaders, to ask the right questions starting from early on?

I've been just reading Die Kunst des klugen Fragens by Warren Berger who suggests that there are three main questions which help in problem solving: why questions, what-happens-if questions, and how questions.

Regardless of the question, the question needs to be phrased openly and positively in order to achieve positive results - a closed or negative question only raises bad feelings against each other.
 - Why questions help to find the root of a problem.
 - What-if questions open up the floor for creative solutions.
 - How questions focus on developing practical solutions.

So, perhaps, this lesson can be adapted to help trigger young children to start solve problems early too and stop accepting whatever the kindergarten teacher says to be fact? And perhaps, continue to keep up these inquiring and probing abilities later on in life? Well, here goes, let's give it a try...

Introducing the Question Game
Preparation: print out the figure in the illustration, cut it out and glue the tabs together to form a cube.

Pick up your favorite illustrated fairy tale book - the kind of book you'd read a two-year-old for bedtime stories. On each page, roll the cube and answer the question together. I'll bet you'd be surprised by what turns Little Red Riding Hood can take... and more importantly, I'll bet that after a while, you and your child will both start asking these questions more often than not!

It's defined as a long term way of 'achieving to enforce EU competition rules decisively, based on input from all relevant stakeholders and taking into account the entire structure of the digital single market in order to ensure remedies that truly benefit consumers, internet users and online businesses'

The resolution has 25 other points on the digital market so it's indeed just mentioned as a possible option, it's not binding for the European Committee and no, it doesn't mention Google, but speaks about search engines in general.

The reality in Europe however is that Google has about 90% of the search market. Much higher than in the US, so concerns over a monopoly are realistic and if the EC takes measures they will be targeted at Google.

If it would eventually happen it would mean Google Search would become a separate company selling results and ads to the highest bidders. Products like Google Now could be offered by different companies based on the same search. It seems most likely that the Google the ad seller would be forced to become an independent division as well, but this is all speculation at the moment.

When the US government split up the Bell telephone company, the press referred to the daughters as baby Bells. When it was seriously considered to split up Microsoft, the pun returned in 'Baby Bill's'. Any suggestions for a similar pun on Google daughters?

Most Europeans -often without realizing - get redirected to their country domain when searching on Google. No problem and the results are correctly filtered.

However when going outside of these domains, directly to google.com f.i. suddenly the 'forgotten' information surfaces again.

After a few months of studying on the implementation details the so called Working Party (representatives of privacy organizations from all EU countries) has decided that the right is universal so the results should be filtered by the search engines whatever the domain name.

Interesting first result (there is more to come this week) as this typical European discussion now gets extended to a global one. The reasoning of course is - as so often - that this is a universal right. For now the working party restricts it to Europeans or people living in Europe, but the universal claim is still there.

Just like f.i. Americans expect their right to free speech to be valid wherever they are, so can Europeans expect their right to be forgotten to be valid independent of the location of the searcher.

However here, these two 'universal' rights clash. The right to free speech (which at least in California seems to stretch into search results),  conflicts with the new requirement that google has to filter wherever they present data*

We have been shortchanged on privacy by Google

Gave it a few weeks, but by now we can safely conclude that Google didn't live up to the promise of control over privacy settings in Android 5.0

At Google I/O app control was firmly promised, but it didn't materialize.

App privacy controls still missing from Android 5 / Lollipop
There is a lot of money to be made by selling our privacy so the business model of app developers often relies on harvesting your private data. Enter the world of app privacy controls....

We have all been there: installing a simple app (say a flashlight) which demands access to all our location, contacts and photos, wants to use the microphone and camera and insists on using the internet for itself while sending texts on our costs.

The even more sneaky apps install with a normal list of permissions, but on the first update extend this enormously.

Most users just say accept without even scrolling down the list, but some of us would like to control what an app can do on our phone. Happy to let the flashlight app control the camera flash, but why give it access to our contacts or location to resell these data to an unknown third party.

For a short period Android (4.2.2) offered exactly this possibility to control the permissions of apps. You could allow or deny individual permissions. If you went too far, the app stopped working, but in most cases you got the functionality you wanted without the intrusion on your privacy.

App Ops was brilliant and applauded by privacy organization EFF, but rapidly removed by Google. This control by users was not 'ready for prime-time' so there was hope it would return in Android 5.

Unfortunately it's missing from today's announcements. What we got in terms of privacy is default encryption (nice if you lose your phone) and so called SELinux which will help against malware and controls access on a system level but it's not user controlled.

However Android 5 / Lollipop won't protect you against the software you install yourself. Lots of apps are basically malware as they only exist to spy on you and sell your privacy, but you were the one who accepted the long list of 'permissions' so officially it was your choice to sell out.

Android 5 offers us a security lollipop while we need actual user control over apps. Disappointing that Google didn't dare to break the business model of sneaky apps

What would be your choice: fine control with the slight risk that the installed app won't work as expected or the current black and white model of 'accept all' versus 'don't install'?

#LolliPop #Android #Privacy  ___We have been shortchanged on privacy by Google

Gave it a few weeks, but by now we can safely conclude that Google didn't live up to the promise of control over privacy settings in Android 5.0

At Google I/O app control was firmly promised, but it didn't materialize.

Sony Pictures hacked and business secrets held for ransom
Hackers who call themselves 'Guardians of Peace' claim they possess a huge trove of confidential data which they threaten to release if their demands are not met.

What the group wants from Sony Pictures is unclear: a message popped up on all internal computers demanding cooperation before 23.00 GMT (a few hours ago).

The hackers released a list of files claimed to be in their possession to the public. People who looked at them tell the list is extremely long and contains filenames like:

Angelina Jolie passport.pdf
Deals.pst
FY2015_WA.xls
Extranet Oracle & SQL passwords 4.3.06.txt

So emails, private information and up to date financial budgets and this is just a small sample. Most seems to be sensitive stuff.

Nothing happened after the deadline passed so either it was bluff (unlikely, but possible at this moment) or hackers and Sony are discussing how to proceed.___

Is Uber a tech disruption or just another way of the good old taxi industry?

I know that I have been a bit harsh on Uber, but it's one of those startups that get so much attention for all the wrong reasons. It's in no way a shining example of crowdsourcing. It's more of a black sheep.

This morning, Business Insider posted a leaked presentation detailing Uber's actual revenue for the Month of December 2013. And we can use that to see exactly how much money Uber's drivers are actually making.

Uber themselves claims that their drivers earn an average of $93,000 per year, but no journalist has yet been able to get even close to that. And this leaked presentation doesn't get any closer either.

http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-revenue-rides-drivers-and-fares-2014-11?op=1

For instance, we can simply look at the revenue for December for each of the big cities, and divide that with the number of drivers. This gives us the average revenue per driver.

The number we end up with $3,200 per month, per driver (on average). That's about $40,000, or half of what Uber claims in their PR releases.

But we are talking overall revenue here, not what the drivers take home. Of this we have to deduct the revenue share that goes to Uber, and then we have the massive costs of the drivers who have to supply their own cars, their own insurance, their own gas, their own vacation pay, healthcare, and their own maintenance. This makes up about 65% of their income.

The result is that each driver, on average (using Uber's own data), only earns $1,000 a month. That's what's left over when all those expenses have been paid.

There is one element missing here, of course. Some drivers work full-time while others only work part-time, which skews the numbers.

So, let's look at 'fare per driver hour' which average around $20 according to Uber's presentation. And once again we take out Uber's share and the cost for the driver, and we are left with a salary of about $6-$8 per hour actively working.

Now, this is not exactly worse than the Taxi companies, who have long had a reputation of very poor salaries. We often hear about Taxi drivers having to work 12-hour shifts and from that barely earn the minimum wage. But it does mean that Uber as a company is not a better model. It's a better concept than regular taxis, but it's not a better model.

And my problem with this, as an analyst, is that Uber today is riding on a wave 'startup buzz'. People are excited about them because it's new, it's tech, it's Silicon Valley, and it's backed by tech VCs. And they are different and feel fresh. But when the driver's salaries are as bad as those of the taxi companies, and working conditions being just as brutal, this 'buzz' won't last.

So, to me, I think that Uber in the future will be seen the same way as we today look regular taxi companies. They will have the same kind of problems, the same lack passions, and the same 'we don't really trust you' kind of feel to them.

We can already see the start of this today.

Uber is not really solving anything. They are changing a few things about how we order and pay for a ride. But down the line... it's just the same old.

This also links to all these stories we see like "Uber will be the future of public transit". No they won't. Their model is completely unsustainable compared to buses and subways.

BTW: This is not about Uber either. Other ride-sharing concepts have the same problem. Companies like Lyft might be run by more ethical executives, but they too are not creating a new form of transportation that is financially better than the taxis.

We are not really moving forward here. Sure, it's great that we now have an app, and that paying for the ride is automatic. It's also great that drivers and passengers are ranked. But underlining problems with transporting people are the same as always.

If we really want to solve the problem, we have to find a way to dramatically remove some of the cost. ___Is Uber a tech disruption or just another way of the good old taxi industry?

Fashionably old-fashioned?

Why is it that older folks suddenly seem to loose their sense of fashion? Is it the industry not giving them anything else to wear or are they willingly getting dressed like in a uniform? Is it peer pressure? Is it their kids telling them that they "cannot dress like that" if they wear anything else but bland jackets and old-fashioned shoes?

Please, don't let me end up like that.___Fashionably old-fashioned?

Google search to be replaced by Yahoo in the US

The interesting thing is that Google Search isn't as dominant in the US as it's in Europe. This move by Firefox won't change much in the US,

If a similar deal (maybe not with Yahoo) would be offered in Europe it could actually help Google as it's much more dominant and hence prone to fall victim to monopoly / market dominance accusations over here.

Not so sure I would like Yahoo as my default search engine. You?

Huge change in the world of browsers and search: Firefox is changing search default from Google to Yahoo in the US. That means lots of new search volume for Yahoo -- and no doubt new revenue.___Google search to be replaced by Yahoo in the US

Which car is this? Do you recognize it? Play the guessing game.

It's my turn, so let me know the model and make please. If you find this on a share, remember to answer on the original.

First to guess it correctly can upload a new 'Which car' and start a new round of the game.

Rules: existing car (no concept car / must have been in production), you can manipulate the image to obscure logos and obstruct Google image search, but don't deform the car.

You can ask for hints if it's too hard.

How to get a child to think critically

This article contains illustrative examples which resonate to my personal educational experience throughout school - I remember how much I would detest all the test questions that I got wrong because I answered 'What word means .....' with a synonym of the vocabulary list word instead of that word itself, or because I had written out a fraction instead whereas the answer key rounded to two decimals, or because my experimental measured lab value was not close enough to the expected experimental value, and so on.

But the bigger and more immediate question remains unanswered by the article, if the current system doesn't teach children how to think critically, how do we teach those children critical thinking?

This article contains illustrative examples which resonate to my personal educational experience throughout school - I remember how much I would detest all the test questions that I got wrong because I answered 'What word means .....' with a synonym of the vocabulary list word instead of that word itself, or because I had written out a fraction instead whereas the answer key rounded to two decimals, or because my experimental measured lab value was not close enough to the expected experimental value, and so on.

But the bigger and more immediate question remains unanswered by the article, if the current system doesn't teach children how to think critically, how do we teach those children critical thinking?

For starters, I'd humbly propose a few suggestions:

1) Do misuse everything you can.
Learning goal: Do not take anything for granted.
Why can't a bed be an ironing board? Why can't a cardboard box turn into a toy bridge? Or a diaper be an emergency sunshade? All is well, until the kids reach kindergarten and start getting told off by the teachers on what is and isn't acceptable, and now they tell me what I should be doing and are continually astounded that whatever alternative I'm doing actually works. Yes, Mama is crazy... and not a bit ashamed of it.

2) Do try out stupid things.
Learning goal: Test things out yourself.
Why not eat a lemon together? Go out in the rain without a raincoat? Stick a balloon on a needle? Microwave a CD? Try to fix a broken radio with Google's help instead of taking it to the repair shop? The result is sudden, golden insights bringing very diverse topics together: 'Mama, going out in the rain is just like taking a shower, so I don't have to wash my hair tonight!' (No, Mama did not teach that!)

3) Do make silly excuses.
Learning goal: Create inventive and fluent arguments.
Yes, my son does rolls his eyes when I offer completely outrageous reasons. And laughs when I challenge him to test the reasons himself (he knows better than to believe everything I say). But he also started answer commands such as 'Time to go to bed' as tactfully as any politician asked to give a spontaneous statement on a controversial topic.

The major advantage of Facebook is that the interface is already well-known: no training needed for the socializing parts. However document sharing and calendars are unknowns at the moment where Google and Microsoft have a huge advantage.

The most problematic issue will of course be the privacy/security aspect. Facebook is trying hard to change it's bad name, but it will take time to create the needed trust.

Can you imagine using Facebook At Work at your place?___

A rebuttal to the 'Kim liberated our bodies' school

Hi. Read this.

And prepare to utter "whoa." Excerpt:

"Saartjie was a woman whose large buttocks brought her questionable fame and caused her to spend much of her life being poked and prodded as a sexual object in a freak show.

"Sound familiar?

"But something tells me Kim probably has no clue about the cultural and historic significance of what she’s done. Instead she probably just thought it would be cool to do an edgy photo shoot with famous photographer. And many of you have fallen for that oversimplified stance as well."
