Markos Giannopoulos13,655Engagers VI: Christmas edition // It's a festive season so my monthly "round-up & thank you" circle is on the right mood!First some stats on people who engaged me (gathered via +Circloscope) and on my posts (tracked by +CircleCount):September: 620 plussers, 93 commentators and 86 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 745 +1s, 74 re-shares and 117 comments October: 395 plussers, 33 commentators and 39 sharers on 43 posts for a total of 1057 +1s, 80 re-shares and 165 comments November: 616 plussers, 114 commentators and 176 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 1109 +1s, 234 re-shares and 227 commentsA great month fuelled by two posts: 6+1 WordPress initial-setup plugins  (http://bit.ly/1bKXVgX 359 +1s, 59 comments, 183 re-shares) and Ode à Eiffel (http://bit.ly/1heptNZ 46 +1s, 4 comments, 5 re-shares). If I wanted to get "analytical" about it, it was two posts with some decent value (helpful list of plugins in one case on a every-day issue for a WordPress developer and an album of 18 original photos of night Paris on the other) :) So on to the circle: the formula for this month is - Plussers who are on over 3 engagers circles (so basically who have engaged with me in previous months as well this one)  - Sharers and commentators - A few kind highly-engaging people who have shared original circles including me. - People with over 300 in G+'s "relevance score" (as reported by +Circloscope), e.g. the people Google considers that I interact more and post similar content to mine (or of my interest)All in all, this came to a healthy group of 340 content creators and real engagers interested in technology and photography. Feel free to add them! As usual, stats and circle creation for this post were only made possible thanks to +CircleCount and +Circloscope. #engagers   #circleshare #circlesharing   #circleversary #milestone #googleplus #circleoftheday #circleplus #public #publiccircles 2013-12-16 17:49:57340441177CC G+

Markos Giannopoulos3,766197 interesting People // If you're into technology, the Web, photography and science, here's a circle to consider. Methodology: out of 3200 people that I follow, using +Circloscope I ordered them according to relevance score (calculated by Google depending on whose posts I engage the most) and filtered for a value over 30, then filtered for whether they are active (when was their last post) and finally filtered by whether they were in my "must read" circles. Ryan Howard0So I'm actually really digging Google+. It seems that a lot of folks have given up on it as simply a Facebook alternative, but I think that's the wrong way to look at it.Really I think it's best to look at G+ as a hybrid of something like Twitter, FB, RSS and a blog. While you can use it to keep in touch with friends it also offers a lot of opportunities for sharing information and ideas across a wide variety of people. For example I started following this Google circle that I'm sharing, from it I've learned a LOT about android development, chrome and other google projects, but at the same time I've learned more than I imagined about the science of coffee brewing and some great travel destinations. One of the important steps to actually using Google+ effectively seems to be realizing that it's not all about your "wall/stream" as a catch all. The tool seems to be much more effective when you skip through your streams by circle. For example, when I want to see what my friends are up to I check that Circle's stream, when I want to see what my friends in the States are doing I can check out that stream, or if I'm looking to see what different projects are coming up through Google I check my Google Circle's stream.I think it's also important to realize that unlike facebook but like twitter, you WANT to follow people you DONT KNOW. Don't be afraid, there are lots of interesting folks and posts out there and if you see something interesting, give that person a follow and throw them in a Circle that makes sense. Then going forward you can target your posts to people in the circles that might find them interesting.Anyway, the tl;dnr: Use circles, follow people, be a nerd.. and more importantly let's share some circles. If you have one with interesting people, share it like this and you'll really see the potential of the site open up.2012-01-19 23:34:0266603CC G+

Keepin' it real
There's a lot of discussion and energy spent nowadays on ensuring that people have amazing experiences across a variety of devices (w/ various form factors & platforms), aka a multitude of "screens". While this great, it's important to note that this is on the high-end or inspiration-end of the spectrum (of experiences that users have w/ mobile technology today).

On the low end (or keepin-it-real end), you have to ensure that even if you have a simple app that runs on a smartphone in a market where the user doesn't have much money to spend on a smartphone or a data plan, that you are taking this user's needs into account.

2 of their most important needs being:
1) preserve my battery life,
2) don't wreck my data plan, aka, give me offline mode

It's amazing how these 2b... more »

DevArt - Winner Announced #DevArt

Mapping a dream as it navigates through your brain using G+APIs. Exploring metamorphosis through storytelling in the form of a poetic adventure with Chrome Apps and Compute API. Travelling through a playful giant map that explores fantasy and reality on a huge scale using Map API. Creating music through the touch of your finger on a simple piece of wood using Android. These are just a sample of the hundreds of projects we received after inviting the developer community to express themselves creatively (http://goo.gl/cL8P9m) as part of DevArt (http://goo.gl/58HnuS).

And the winner is … a duo Cyril Diagne & Béatrice Lartigue from France. Cyril and Beatrice’s project, Les métamorphoses de Mr. Kalia, is an interactive poetic adventure exploring the theme of metamorphosis in the human body, inviting the audience to personify Mr. Kaliaas he g... more »

The goal is not to be super accurate but give you a quick overview of where you should focus your attentions.

Amazingly awesome site for Wes Anderson's new movie The Grand Budapest Hotel. It just shows us how much more creativity and smoothness goes into Flash sites compared to HTML5/CSS/JS that have used scrolling to death.

Help needed.  We need a new logo for this community

+Pete LePage took me aside in the office today and said "don't be offended"  - which instantly offended me for thinking I am easily upset - "but can we change the logo for this community, it sucks!"

So.  Let's have a contest.

Suggest an image we can use for this community (that you own), the one with the highest amount of votes is used in this community.

Speed, Performance, and Human Perception - brief keynote talk I gave earlier today at Fluent conference.

TL;DR: optimize for task completion and learn about the (intriguing and often bizarre) properties of the wetwear sitting between our ears! There is more to performance than milliseconds, kilobytes, and frames per second.

DevArt: Calling all future interactive artists

With 3 weeks to go, there's still time to enter DevArt. Last month, we opened up a call for the next up-and-coming developer artist, to be featured in the Barbican as part of the Digital Revolution exhibition, and seen by millions of people (http://goo.gl/8V93OE). If you’re a future interactive artist, the window to submit a project to DevArt is now halfway through!

So far, we’ve seen some amazing ideas--like Les metamorphoses de Mr. Kalia, a poetic digital adventure which features a character that animates to match a spectator's moves (http://goo.gl/oETbF3)...or Contact^2, which aims to spatially and acoustically map objects of different shapes sizes, with materials that will produce different sounds and possibilities for interaction (http://goo.gl/ppY9CI).

In fact, within the first 24 hours of announcingthe ... more »

Just a quick note about SPAM. Stop it!

I don't have a problem with me or our moderators banning people from the group and reporting them as spammers.

This group is about mobile-first web development. Not: Seo, marketing, business services, web development services or anything else that is not related to the mobile web.

If anyone would like to be a moderator to help keep this group on target, let me know.
