Markos Giannopoulos13,655Engagers VI: Christmas edition // It's a festive season so my monthly "round-up & thank you" circle is on the right mood!First some stats on people who engaged me (gathered via +Circloscope) and on my posts (tracked by +CircleCount):September: 620 plussers, 93 commentators and 86 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 745 +1s, 74 re-shares and 117 comments October: 395 plussers, 33 commentators and 39 sharers on 43 posts for a total of 1057 +1s, 80 re-shares and 165 comments November: 616 plussers, 114 commentators and 176 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 1109 +1s, 234 re-shares and 227 commentsA great month fuelled by two posts: 6+1 WordPress initial-setup plugins  (http://bit.ly/1bKXVgX 359 +1s, 59 comments, 183 re-shares) and Ode à Eiffel (http://bit.ly/1heptNZ 46 +1s, 4 comments, 5 re-shares). If I wanted to get "analytical" about it, it was two posts with some decent value (helpful list of plugins in one case on a every-day issue for a WordPress developer and an album of 18 original photos of night Paris on the other) :) So on to the circle: the formula for this month is - Plussers who are on over 3 engagers circles (so basically who have engaged with me in previous months as well this one)  - Sharers and commentators - A few kind highly-engaging people who have shared original circles including me. - People with over 300 in G+'s "relevance score" (as reported by +Circloscope), e.g. the people Google considers that I interact more and post similar content to mine (or of my interest)All in all, this came to a healthy group of 340 content creators and real engagers interested in technology and photography. Feel free to add them! As usual, stats and circle creation for this post were only made possible thanks to +CircleCount and +Circloscope. #engagers   #circleshare #circlesharing   #circleversary #milestone #googleplus #circleoftheday #circleplus #public #publiccircles 2013-12-16 17:49:57340441178

Brian Wolfe22,328I haven't shared a circle in a long time. Maybe too long.Anyways.. Here is the circle that my browser spends the most time on.   Just in case I become a petulant child and walk away (not that I'm planning on doing so , just in case.)2013-08-22 05:36:251941335
Mz Maau10,204I rarely share circles, and I regret to inform, this is not the promised #CircleDirk , rather, it's a circle I've been semi-maintaining since last spring, when it was created for +Pierce Arner to jump-start his Plus experience.Today, I'm resharing the current version on behalf of +Søren Dalsgaard Brath, who, like Pierce, is looking for new content for his stream.I figure he and I probably have a chunk of overlap, so I've added a few extras he might not yet know about. Some notes about the curation of this circle:I've tried to set aside those who have not posted recently, and I've tried to only include those who post publicly, or to extended circles.  I may have missed a few, and if you're in this circle and would like to be permanently removed, please let me know. This is not the final version, as I'm not sure such a thing is possible. This circle DOES come with a warning:You will, most likely, NOT enjoy everyone in this circle.  I, like many, have eclectic tastes, and I'm still a bit gun-shy after seeing some of the explosions from last year's crossing of the streams, so PLEASE, edit this circle to your liking with that in mind.If I ping you, you're in the circle.  There is no expectation or requirement to add this circle, it's merely a courtesy ping.  Again, if you would like to be removed from any future circle shares, please let me know. And yes, I promise, I'm still working on the #CircleDirk .Also note:  This is NOT an indication of who I like best, though some are included in this circle.  It is simply meant to be a sample of the diversity I follow.#PinkAndFluffyPersonsOfQuestionableRepute2013-06-22 16:38:09164143576
Markos Giannopoulos3,766197 interesting People // If you're into technology, the Web, photography and science, here's a circle to consider. Methodology: out of 3200 people that I follow, using +Circloscope I ordered them according to relevance score (calculated by Google depending on whose posts I engage the most) and filtered for a value over 30, then filtered for whether they are active (when was their last post) and finally filtered by whether they were in my "must read" circles. Voila! I hope you find it interesting :) #circleshare   #sharedcircles   #sharedpubliccircles  #circlesharing  2013-05-26 09:51:2119713412

CircleCount52,441The people who have voted on our first pollCheck out the people who have voted on our first poll on CircleCount (http://www.circlecount.com/poll/1).Why are these people interesting? Because they are active! ;)We had a very good discussion with +Richard Hoefer and +Bearman Cartoons here: https://plus.google.com/+CircleCount/posts/AMbHGT3Qu1m and one idea was to feature a special group of people and not only the most followed or most engaging ones.I think this circle is not really what +Richard Hoefer meant, but it goes hopefully in the right direction ;)We like such unusual shared circles, since these people didn't act because we have offered to share them in a circle afterwards. They just did/voted/reviewed! ;)A year ago we have already shared a circle like this with the people who have written a review for our Chrome Extension:https://plus.google.com/+CircleCount/posts/6WCpwBTQxKj2013-04-19 10:25:26165772972

The real shocker in the "ShellShock" vulnerability is the fact that I never knew bash had an "export -f" facility at all. #shellshock #bash #security

Now I remember why I always preferred smaller-is-better shell programs, particularly NetBSD's "ash" which shares a lot of the same source code with Debian's "dash".

Facebook's Intentional Security Fail... or: How Not To Do Two-Factor Properly

In the wake of "The Fappening" and various other security breaches in recent news, two-factor authentication has become much more popular as a way to defend against theft of passwords or session cookie data. I have some form of two-factor auth enabled on every site I use which offers it, save one: Facebook.

Not too long ago, Facebook introduced a form of two-factor authentication using mobile phone SMS verification, under the name "Login Approvals". There's just a little nagging problem: to enable the feature, you're required to stay persistently logged in to Facebook on at least one system.

If your browser is set to clear cookies on exit (or forces cookies to session-only rather than persistent), Facebook prevents you from enabling the feature, with a pop-up message reading:

"Your current <browser> settings might make it hard to use Login Approvals.
It's probably because:
- You sometimes clear your cookies."

Like, duh!? Yes, dear, I do have my browser set to clear cookies on exit. This is a security measure! I want to ensure that a fresh browser session requires that I login again, every time. If someone happens to be able to access the GUI console on my laptop, I don't want any site to sit there, already logged in, just waiting to be accessed.

This defeats the whole purpose of two-factor authentication. Further, it flies in the face of Facebook's internal IT systems security, which makes use of +Duo Security's strong two-factor system every day. Internally, Facebook does the right thing -- externally, it fails miserably.

I can only guess that this restriction exists to nudge folks into leaving Facebook's Internet tracking cookie enabled when not actively using the site itself. Besides being insulting to security-conscious people, this braindead prerequisite for enabling two-factor auth shows that Facebook still only provides lip service to the concept of security.

And I would bet a good $20 that the marketing spin behind this requirement is something along the lines of "Users at home could be confused by having to enter security codes every time they use Facebook".

Yeah, screw that.

#Facebook , you're doing IT wrong. Try again.

On that other social network, a friend pointed out a remix of a +Kylie Minogue song by Freemasons. I actually had not heard of Freemasons until now, but they're fantastic.

Wikipedia classifies them as "dance / funky house / disco house / Eurodance", but that's the Wikipedia editors trying Hard not to use the "D" word by itself. I can sum their work up as Neo-Disco. And here, it's definitely not a vulgar word! The remixes and original tracks make me want to fall in love with disco all over again for the first time. Disco with a distinctly modern flair.

There are three full remix albums available: Shakedown, Shakedown 2, and Shakedown 3. They're worth full-through listening and are gapless full mixes. Also available are some unmixed collections. Google Play Music link: http://goo.gl/cCKUgc

People are still gushing about how happy they are, paying a minimum of $650 and up to $950 (I don't count carrier finance plans - this is the actual cost, even if amortized), for a phone...

...Really?

That's 2-3 times the price of a new Chromebook and half or more the cost of a decent used motorcycle. And the gushing, oh the fanatical gushing! <boggle>

If you're spending enough time fiddling with your handset that this kind of profit margin is acceptable to you, I'd like to remind you of the wonderful concept of human interaction, which is cheap or free. Save yourself as much as $800, get a middle-of-the-road device, and most importantly, use it less often. You'll thank me later. :-P

People are still gushing about how happy they are, paying a minimum of $650 and up to $950 (I don't count carrier finance plans - this is the actual cost, even if amortized), for a phone...

I don't know what +gardein is putting in their products, but I have to imagine they are forgetting to include "pixie dust", "magic potion", and "sacrificial human" in the ingredients list. Their stuff is addictive.

What's next, crab cakes? (Hint, hint.)

Yes, Comedy Needed Joan Rivers

From the Comedy Central Roast of Joan Rivers (2009), here's her closing act. It really sums things up fantastically. The language here is NSFW, but that shouldn't even need to be said.

In case the video doesn't properly start at the 55:50 mark, here's a direct link: The Roast of Joan Rivers

Calling core +Android devs for a deep dive (don't want to nag the whole of the AOSP mailing lists, if possible): Please have someone who works on the Google Play Services subsystem contact me directly at tv@duh.org.  (Someone with me in their circles probably knows whom to contact.)

I think I see a serious memory-consuming bug in the 5.0 version of com.google.android.gms, which is locking it into memory at all times to the tune of ~50-70M, because of the new wearable support (regardless of whether an #androidwear device is in use).

This permanent memory hit, making the service's RAM un-reclaimable in low memory situations, severely hurts devices of the 512M base memory class -- which includes almost all currently available devices with a hw keyboard (which I need for frequent ssh usage).

I've already started doing this with my VoIP connection (thank you, +CSipSimple), but applications specifically for call recording tend to be available for many smartphone devices. ===

NOTE, HOWEVER, that telephone recording consent laws are different from one U.S. state to another. READ THE SECTION BELOW BEFORE YOU START RECORDING YOUR CALLS.

Some states have "two-party consent" aka "all-party consent", meaning that all parties to a conversation must be aware that recording may be taking place.

IANAL, however, it is my interpretation that some all-party consent states permit recording by any party as long as the possibility of recording is claimed by any party (not necessarily the party doing the recording). This means that some all-party consent states may still allow you to record the call without saying so -- as long as the company's own IVR (automated menu) includes that canned schpiel of "This call may be monitored or recorded for [whatever reason]" (or the CS rep says so). Before assuming this to be true, check your state's laws.

One-party consent states are much easier: you don't have to tell anyone that you're recording your conversations, because you're the one giving consent. For once, I'm happy to live in a one-party consent state (GA).

The basics of recording consent status by state: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_recording_laws#United_States

Of course, that same guy was barely in grade school when the first rainbow flags flew in that city's downtown, only to be removed at the end of that month and not to be seen again for many years, thanks to a city ban on non-city-official symbolism. It wasn't the first time that rainbow flags were flown in a U.S. city in June, but it was one of the first well-publicized times, drawing the public ire of Pat Robertson and his ilk.

I guess Mr. Myhre has never heard of Tenthers. I'm not saying that Judge Kelly is one, only that he may be falling a little too readily for that sort of rhetoric. His dissent opinion is closer to a more mild "states' rights!" argument, but does contain the following. AP quoted it above, but I noticed that they curiously left out the very start of the sentence (emphasis added by me below), which is much more clueful as to how the argument is framed::
___

If the States are the laboratories of democracy, requiring every state to recognize same-gender unions—contrary to the views of its electorate and representatives—turns the notion of a limited national government on its head.

"Laboratories of democracy" is a phrase which ultraconservative movements embrace, from the early 20th century in an opinion delivered by a SCOTUS Justice.

So I finally finished watching the +COSMOSonTV series produced by Seth McFarlane and Brannon Braga. (Yes, I figured the CGI would be strong with this one, given the latter name.)

The Islamic militant group that swept across northern Iraq and captured two major cities last week has posted graphic photos that appear to show its fighters massacring dozens of captured Iraqi soldiers.

The pictures on a militant website appear to show masked fighters of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, loading the captives onto flatbed trucks before forcing them to lie face-down in a shallow ditch with their arms tied behind their backs.

But no, we can't have that. We gotta go in and kill the only guy with the iron will and complete lack of morals that can make these people live together.

I know a guy from Iraq. He said that when the USA killed Saddam they created 100 Saddams. And the problem was that with Saddam, he said that they knew what the rules were. You don't mess with Saddam, you don't mess with his family, and you don't mess with each other. And everything is OK. He said with 100 Saddams you have no idea who is going to plant the bomb. You have no idea who is in charge. You are just in the middle of a struggle. So the people who don't want that do whatever they can to get the hell out of the country. Others want to be there to kill their brothers. Others remain trapped.

It is a catstrophe.

BUT THIS IS WHY YOU DO NOT GO AND KICK THE HORNET'S NEST IN THE FIRST PLACE

The guy who laid the turd is the guy who is responsible for it. You cannot ever put humpty dumpty back together again. Not with all the kings horses and all the kings men.

Didn't you stupid people have mothers that taught you this? You think you can park a trillion dollar army there forever, pay no taxes, and achieve peace in the middle east?

Bunch of fools. All you can do is try to step back and not get any blood on your hands. They are going to fight it out. Hope that the victors don't mean you any ill will. The best way to avoid that particular headache is by not going in there and killing people left right and center in the first place. Not bombing their country back into the stone age. Not believing that there are simple solutions to complex questions. Not thinking that freedom is something you can give someone at the end of the barrel of your gun. This is a major mess, but the one who instigated it is GWB. Doesn't matter who it is from here, he is either going to SPEND ALL YOUR MONEY TRYING TO FIX THIS MESS and the VERY MINUTE he pulls out it will all start over again, or he is going to pull out now and watch it disintegrate.

Smarter people KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN and you FOOLS believed that you could bring a three sentence solution to one of the oldest problems in civilization. Brother killing brother over race, and religion and other stupid things. Ireland. Quebec. Rwanda. Korea. Cambodia. Israel. Iraq. Ukraine. Humanity specializes in neighbors and brothers hating each other. You cannot solve this by bombing a country or parking your military there indefinitely.

Now, get your popcorn and watch the fireworks. Or, spend all your money and go back in there for another 10 years and another 50,000 young american men getting their lives ruined with permanent war injuries and another 5,000 grieving mothers for whom their boy will never come back again. IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT? You stupid idiots.

I meant to post about this sooner, but got sidetracked. Depending on the search terms you enter, you might see a very different navigation toolbar in your Google search results.

So you feel like glorifying Ronald Reagan ten years (and a day) after he died?

Oh, I'm in a blocking mood today, folks. C'mon, try me. Or, read this article from ten years ago, which is just as valid today.

(Edit: Yes, I was taught that one should always speak good of the dead. So here goes: He's dead. Good.)

OK, who set the sky on fire tonight? Possibly the second-eeriest color I've seen -- next to the sky in the eye of Hurricane Andrew, which was a swirl of orange and lavender-violet.

A very weird sunset refraction effect that lasted for about 10 minutes but was so bright that it was like an orange-red daytime through the windows. All I could find in time was my crappy cheap cellphone to take a picture.

(Google Auto-Enhance turned off to make this look much more like the real thing.)

In case you forgot, The Onion is launching a parody of Upworthy and Buzzfeed this month. IT CAN'T COME QUICKLY ENOUGH. Viral clickbait articles are the scourge of today's Internet.

Of course, the author of this article could have come up with a better title, like You Won't Believe What's About To Happen To Social Media!

I AM NOT A SNARK! I AM A FREE MAN!!1!

That should keep them off my tail for a while.

The Secret Service wants software that detects social media sarcasm. "Our objective is to automate our social media monitoring process. Twitter is what we analyze. This is real time stream analysis. The ability to detect sarcasm and false positives is just one of 16 or 18 things we are looking at. We are looking for the ability to quantity our social media outreach." Some of the other things the agency wants are "the ability to identify social media influencers, analyze data streams in real time, access old Twitter data and use heat maps. And it wants the software to be compatible with Internet Explorer 8."___I AM NOT A SNARK! I AM A FREE MAN!!1!

Today's IT recruiter of shame: +Kenexa, an IBM Company

I get plenty of recruiter e-mail from people who don't read the very bold, loud statement in my résumé that I am not open to relocation. Those usually just get relegated to the Spam folder so that the recruiters in question, who are generally clueless, get learned as spammy by the mail filter weighting systems.

(Further, my profile on LinkedIn, et al., says I'm not on the market. I like where I work, and the relatively low level of stress, so it'd take a whole lot of significant sway to pull me away.)

This particular recruiter is a little bit crass (or is it desperate?). One of the scouts from this recruitment firm, a subsidiary of IBM, decided to ignore my no-relo statement AND send the same mail to both my personal and work accounts. The last bit is probably the tackiest part.more »

From my comment on +Tejas Richard's reshare:
"Your average piece-of-shit Windows desktop is so complex that no one person on Earth really knows what all of it is doing, or how."

A huge part of the blame lies in the Windows philosophy of being everything-to-everyone: it is so overloaded with APIs that large chunks of the whole system's code still dates back to the mid-1990s and hasn't been looked at for more than an aggregate second or two since. Further, Windows still doesn't embrace the fundamental concept of locking down dangerous operations; by default, a home user logs in as a member of "Administrators", the equivalent of Unix's "root". The problem is more pervasive than just one company in Redmond, but they do deserve the lion's share of blame.

A terrifying, humorous, and ultimately empowering read.___From my comment on +Tejas Richard's reshare:

Unix systems tend to more granular, modular pieces, which means that the prevalence of security holes in Linux, OSX, and so forth is lesser not because of market share, but because of greatly increased difficulty in exploiting weaknesses. That doesn't absolve coders from being more careful, as the openssl "Heartbleed" vulnerability pointed out too well. All pieces in this modular structure are building blocks, and the blocks at the lowest points of the foundation need the most scrutiny (and unfortunately don't often get it).

I take a little bit of issue with the assertion that "people" -- which in this article refers to end users, not programmers -- are broken. It's our fault, as programmers, that non-programmers don't know how to keep themselves safe and secure. Safe computing doesn't need to be complicated, but it does need to work.

The article follows that up with culture itself being broken, and that's totally fair. In the end, yes, everything is broken. But it's still possible to fix, tiny little bits at a time.

"Born With Curiosity follows US Navy Commander and computer pioneer, Grace Hopper's personal and professional life through the birth of the modern technology industry and the evolution of women's roles in American society.  Although Grace had a quirky sense-of-humor and defied many conventions of her time, she did not see herself as the quintessential poster girl for the women’s liberation movement, but that didn't stop her from becoming one.  Our film captures the excitement of the birth of computer programming and all the advancements it brought about while (re-)introducing Grace in all her complexities."___Worth the support.

Escape from Tomorrow: What the hell did I just watch!?

It's like a film noir -- on LSD -- and features the most magical place on earth in a not so magical framing. The only way this would be more trippy is if Aronofsky did it himself.
