Best from the weekend

For the hell of it - tried out a Sigma 150-600.  Much better of a lens than the Tamron equivalent, but still doesn't do better than my Canon v1 100-400 even with cropping.

A good weekend for Terns. No matter the time of day for the outings, they were in a feeding mode with their diving.  Goals were to work on capturing the Forster's Tern in their "angel wing' hovering pose and splashdowns.

A couple of favorites from the weekend

The lighting wasn't the best for those animals flying in the sky - a grayish background of clouds doesn't help to pull the details out in the feathers, but here are a couple of favorites from this past weekend's outing.

Caught this guy bouncing around the beach while I was spending time coastal birding while waiting for sundown to capture evening light.

Community Guidelines - updated

Thank you for joining us in sharing your wildlife photos!  To ensure a great experience for everyone, we wanted to put some guidelines out for everyone to be aware of as you post in this community:

-- Post you own original wildlife (animals, birds, insects) photos!  Anything not your own photo may be removed without comment and may lead to being blocked.

-- Any posted photo must be of a free/wild animal.  Pictures from zoos, enclosures or of domestic animals will be removed without comment.

-- To ensure everyone has an opportunity for their posts to be seen, we recommend posting only once per day.  While a few extras are sometimes acceptable please be sure not to post more than two or thee times a day.  Posting more frequently may lead to posts being removed as spam without comment.  Excessive posting may also result in being blocked without comment.

-- Links to blogs or other outside posts (500px, Flickr) are fine if they are clearly about wildlife.  If you are posting a photo from an outside photo sharing site, please make sure the thumbnail is the the focus on not just a link.  While we prefer photos posted within G+, we can understand wanting to link from another online portfolio.

-- Photos that are not relevant to wildlife / blog links that show no clear evidence of being relevant to wildlife will be blocked.  Basically, post spam = get blocked.

-- Please make sure the wildlife in your photo can be seen.  Dots of ducks in a photo of a mountain and lake is not wildlife photography - it is landscape photography that has some small animals in it.  Saying they are there does not compensate for the lack of visibility of the wildlife.

-- YouTube videos, gifs or other animated postings will be removed without comment.  Too many postings of this type may lead to being blocked.

Other things to consider:

-- It appears that one of the things likely to get your posts marked as possible spam is posting multiple images to a community (single or multiple) within a short period of time. If you're one that falls into this automatic detention from Google: Your posts may not immediately show up.  A moderator would have to approve the photos to be shown.  No harm done; just give the moderators some time to get to reviewing any posts marked as spam.

--  While posting an album is acceptable, be aware that posting a single photo will garner you more views and interactions.

-- Please be aware of the sections for the community and post to the right area.  While posting in the wrong community is not an issue in a single instance and a moderator may relocate to the correct area, please be aware that continued mis-postings may result in being considered spam.

-----  Your Best Photos: Self-explanatory we would think.  This is an area for select single photos you feel are your best work.
-----  Albums:  If you are going to post an album of photos, please use this area to separate them from the other areas.
---- Help with ID: Post photos here when you are in need of identifying your wildlife subject.  If someone can help we will try.
----  Tips:  Anything you would like to share around wildlife photography?  Put it here!
---- Discussion:  This is an area for any wildlife discussion.  Please keep the postings on topic and the discussion civil and respectful.  Not being either will result in being blocked.
---- Community Standards - NO PHOTOS:  This area is where you will see the latest information on community standards.  It is where this is being read from.

Enjoy everyone!___

Best of the weekend: Sometimes it is nice to have those days where the clouds aren't playing around with light and you can use everything the sun throws out to capture the local wildlife.  Before the winds kicked up later in the morning, the water was an excellent source of reflections.

Usually going through what I have taken over a weekend to show as 'best' is a personal choice on what to share, but this week it was flat easy.  Being it good or bad, this shot defaulted to the best from the weekend as it was the only one that resulted from the one outing.  The weather wasn't the best with bald grey skies meaning most everything was either backlight like crazy, or in shadow with no detail.

Only at the end of my morning did the light start to balance out to pull anything out of what was around.  Which in all honestly wasn't that much to begin with.

One of the finished shots from visiting the U.K. over the Christmas Holiday.

St, David's Cathedral:  during a quick break in the visitors moving through the Nave I was able to grab a series of quick brackets to be able to put together this HDR composite.

Canon 7D Mk ii w/ Samyang 8mm f/.3.5 fish-eye lens - 5 brackets at +/-4, +/-2 and metered.

Not a lot from the weekend, but what there was I am happy about

The weather being more of a variable than it usually is this time of year, The Sanctuary contends with good light, but not a lot of wildlife action.

The sunset on Sat was lining up to have all the right components - A rain front moving through the last hour of the day. The sunset wasn't the best it could have been, but 15 min later the blue hour saved the evening by ensuring the trip was indeed worth it.

Not a good weekend for wildlife at the sanctuary, but a decent sunrise.

And it does go to show that the best time to shoot vertical is right after you shoot horizontal (or vice versa in this particular case)

#Bestoftheweekend

Finally getting back into the swing of things after the holidays and some travel.

A decent morning which made me glad I decided to pack a pocket camera to augment the wildlife kit, and with the rains in SoCal, a lot of of the animals were out of their normal areas which led to the opportunity to have a group of 4 Coyotes share their space with me while hunting rabbits. They are shot at 400mm on a crop sensor, but are not cropped in post, so they quickly got use to me and let me hang around them for almost 2 hours

best of the weekend.  The weather patterns have been holding with the pure, unadulterated lack of cloud cover.  This is great for working withe wildlife at sunrise as there isn't an impairment to leveraging the golden hues first thing in the morning.

with the upcoming long weekend, I am looking forward to getting out a few extra days as the month is moving closer to the end.

Sunset at Dockweiler State Beach

Even with high winds having moved out the majority of clouds from the coast, and kicking up what could be described as a sandstorm from the beach  -- holding out to see what sunset gives means you have at least a chance to walk away with something on the card to work with.

Fall colors in a heat wave!

It is amazing how consistent, and crazy the weather can be.    Last weekend, the temperature was hitting above 100 degrees (in OCT!), but even with that, some of the trees are holding true with it being time to start changing the color of their leaves.

Best from the weekend.

While I did get out to my normal wildlife haunts, this weekend was the World Wide Photowalk and was able to push myself out of my routine.

These were taken at Huntington Beach Pier in CA.  The weather was great for light to catch the surfer and volley ball players.

July wrap up from the Sanctuary.  Not one of the more spectacular months in the area, but it is Summer and time for the heat to push a lot of the inhabitants out to cooler areas.

Tried out a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary for the first weekend of the month.  Much better than the Tamron, but still thinking that the resluts from my Canon 100-400 v1 gives better results (even with cropping in to match the 600mm)

A little late on the update, but just realized that I hadn't put this up the end of June.

My what is becoming usual monthly update with what I come away from through the month at the local wildlife sanctuary.  A decent month considering that the mornings were usually crap. for skies.

Best of the weekend 7/18/2015

Taking a step outside of my normal weekend habits, I brought along a second camera and setup a time-lapse while seeing what birds and such I could find through the morning.  The time-lapse turned out far better than the bird photography for the day.

I went back the next day and committed to the TL process by using two camera setup.  I made a gross error on one of the camera and not able to use all the shots taken, but still was fun (other than the standing in the sun for 3 hours while the pictures were taken).

A few lessons learned to try on the next outing, but pretty happy with the results considering this is only the second time I've tried a TL with the big boy DSLR and not just my GoPro. Slight flickering that I need to get under control.  I don't have any specific software at this time to be able to de-flicker the results. M... more »

Taken with a 60D w/MagicLantern; Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 (f/10 @ 11mm).  Processed in Lightroom and combined in Photoshop,

Thoughtful critiques always welcome.

This and the sister videos from day 2 will be going up on the blog hopefully tonight and can be seen at http://ptdavis.photography

While these won't go up until the end of the month on  the blog (I wrap up all wildlife photography into an end of the month post), more can always be found at http://ptdavis.photography

Best from the weekend

Finally!  A break in the dreaded June Gloom in SoCal and the sun actually breaking through for sunrise.  The only downside to that is sunrise is at 5:20 in the morning, so it is rough to get going when you are really a night owl at heart.

It is always good to know that breaking the rules can produce a good result.  One other person arrived  during the golden hour and was nice enough to work at having me understand that shooting into the sun is always a bad idea ;)

more at http://ptdavs.photograohy These and more going up on the blog in the next couple of days

Re-edits

What do you do when you have had 3 weeks when weather has sucked for getting out with the camera?  For me - it is usually a stuck at home, but the couple of projects I have been working on have fire as a ingredient so I've been working out how to accomplish what I want with out setting the house on fire :)

So, since the last update from Lightroom CC (not the most recent) I'e gone back to some pics from the past years and see what new ones I could come away with.

Thought I'd put them out there as on my blog I'll be putting them in the respective galleries and not a post on their own.

Results from the Sanctuary for May.  With the weather not looking good for sun in the morning (when everything is active), I am closing out the month and putting these out there.

Not sure how the next month will pan out as it seems the SoCal June Gloom has officially set in.

Best from the weekend

A longer weekend meat being able to get some more quality time with nature this past weekend.

Rented the Tamrom 150-600 to give it a try and wasn't all that impressed to be honest; but stuck with it over the weekend and came away with a few decent shots to share

Another Stuck at Home project -

Was able to borrow a 1:1 macro for a time and finally got around to trying a macro focusing rail I picked up a while ago; and was able to continue to learn some lighting techniques with Catcus v6 triggers on a pair of Canon 430-EXIIs + L & XL Rouge Flash benders and other modifiers

It is amazing how much 'fur' berries have on them.  I was really short of ideas on subjects as there is just too much wind for anything really outside with a 100mm 1:1 as you are so close to the subject that insets are wary and did I mention the wind!

To be honest - I am not totally off berries for the time being - all.that.fur...... :)

Best from the weekend.

Sometimes the best from an outing are good pictures to have, but also can express the hardships that animals in the wild have to deal with.   You can go out with the hope to come back with that best looking Bobcat or hawk in flight photo anyone has ever seen, but the realities of the wild can offer you up something different.  Not something that I would think would ever be put in anyone's portfolio, but something which should still be shared.

The first photo was an opportunity that literally popped up as I was walking back to my vehicle for the day, overhead I caught a blur of a flash accompanied with the noise of a large population of wading birds (Black Necked Stilts) - which usually means Predator.  In a heartbeat almost faster than I could get the camera to my eye was a Cooper Hawk having picked up a chick for it's nextme... more »

The second is one of those encounters that everyone at the Sanctuary wants to have:  A personal encounter with one of the local Bobcats.  After some initial shots and what seemed like an eternity, but probably only a couple of min, this guy came to the realization that I was not there to harm him and was comfortable enough to walk within 10 feet of me to get a series of close ups at 400mm of him walking by.  Looks like unfortunately it has had some health issues and Mange has set in.  There are so few in the area that you hate to see any of them succumb to something like a parasite, but at least the weather gives it more of a fighting chance than any other place where exposure could cause an issue.

Circle of Life - not everything is always perfect in front of your lens, but still just as important to capture.

Best from the weekend.

With only one day to head out as the weather was recovering from some rain that came through the area, and a seriously cloudy Saturday, Sunday was a great day weather wise: Nice sun, no wind on the water; but not a lot of critters.  Probably the rain storms pushed them out a bit and haven't returned.

A couple of "pleased with" shots from the weekend though with the light results from the outing.

I am so happy with digital these days as the number of shots you need to take with the hope of catching any of the Swallows in focus is stupidly insane if you had to stick to film.

Some favorites from the weekend:

While hanging out under a tree waiting to see if recently returned Black Skimmers would start to take flight, a couple of Tree Sparrows were skimming the water and landing on the branches just above my head.

They really seemed nonplussed with me being within reaching distance of them, actually almost showing off at times.

The cloudy day which was giving me concern over taking shots against it actually worked in this condition as it helped bring out the detail of the feathers with them being so close.  Less of a jump in dynamic range from the subject to the sky, so less issue with silhouetting against the sky

Pretty much a good start to the monthly takeaways from the Sanctuary

April's Round up from the Sanctuary

Decent Light for the month, but the weather (or lack there of) has really changed the migrating counts in the area.  As compared to previous years, the numbers of birds and such are really down and while you can still always go and come away with subjects, they aren't there in the variety there used to be.

The lighting wasn't the best for those animals flying in the sky - a grayish background of clouds doesn't help to pull the details out in the feathers, but here are a couple of favorites from this past weekend's outing.

something that I have gotten into over the last couple of years is long exposure photography.  I love my B+W 10-stop as it opens up scenes beyond simple clicks or HDR compositions (which are another enjoyment I have - to create realistic HDR composites).

Doing some time wasting on the interwebs I came across a comparison of LEE filters to some coming out from Formatt-Hitech out of the UK.  Having used Cokin filters in the past, I wanted to jump to the square format once I got into an upgrade cycle for my filters but found the only real option of LEE was just too expensive to I went the screw-in filter route and step down rings.  This didn't bother me too much as I stopped using grads years ago, but this also meant writing off some of the more intense filters as they were conly coming out in square format.  B+W was the first that had a excellent quality screw in filter to complete with theLEE... more »

That previous thought got away from me there.......what I was getting at was that Formatt-Hitech had a ND 4.8 (16-stop) they were producing with great reviews and when I caught they were selling them as a screw in as well - I jumped at it (especially since I caught one before a recent price jump).

This is the first chance to get out with it, and it wasn't the best day to really put it through some paces, but I am pleased with what it did under the conditions.  Metering the scene as it was, I had a setting of 1/125s, f/10,ISO100 - putting on that filter extended my exposure to 480s (8 min!).  This was taken at 4:30 in the afternoon, just shy of an hour away from sunset.

The waves rendered as a nice cotton candy effect and there were people coming and going in front of the lens checking out the rocks which didn't even catch on the sensor in the slightest.

Looking forward to getting this one out and pushing it as soon as the weather and my time from work aligns.
