Double-crested Cormorant with mating plumage

Really been tough this month with wildlife, the usually suspects just aren't coming back to the area.  Not sure if it is a El nino thing, or just climate in general.... but it is a shame that it is at a point I am starting to ask if it is worth getting out at sunrise any more.  Just not a lot around to drive me out of bed at the moment....

Finally bit the bullet mid last year and converted a spare body over to dedicated IR.  Chose the Enhanced IR (665nm) option, as I can then put a 72 filter on it and not have too much difference in the exposure times.

Looking forward to Spring coming in full force where I have days with some clouds and lots of sun.  Been one or the other (full sun no clouds or mostly cloudy) lately, but there is always hope of tomorrow.

The one time so far I've been able to catch these guys going after fish in their pond. They usually head out to sea from where the sanctuary is located.

One in a series of 6 shots I captured over a couple of hours

It has been some slow action months at the Sanctuary.  Looking back at the catalog from the past two years, there is definitely a decrease in activity.  With the CA drought conditions, the water just isn't at the old levels and a lot of areas have stated to die off and not able to support the fish counts as in the past.  You can see the climate changes affecting this area as numbers and types of species are just not there to capture as they were in the recent past.

It is always nice when they land right in front of you on a tree - you just have to wait around for them to clear all the smaller branches that might get in the way between you and it.

Something different than normal - a weekend spent at a local Civil War re-enactment day. Some exercises in trying to stretch time, and the work at catching "the moment" when you see the firearms shooting

I have a love/fascination/obsession with trying to capture raptors as they are coming in the perch, or just having launched - to me they make an excellent 'in action' shot and something different than a normal specimen shot.

The best three from this past weekend - happy to finally get the Osprey on the right side of me to the sun, and doing more than just perching.  The Downy Woodpecker was a great experience as I was able to creep up on it while it was digging for grubs to get the shot you see without cropping at 400mm

A longer weekend meant getting out a bit more with the camera, and to some other places than normal.

A hopeful spectacular sunset at the beach didn't work out as hoped, but taking advantage of what was there salvaged the outing.

Visits to the Sanctuary, although quiet as usually expected this time of year, did produce some good clicks.

Community Guidelines - updated

Thank you for joining us in sharing your wildlife photos!  To ensure a great experience for everyone, we wanted to put some guidelines out for those of you past of the community to be aware of as you post in this community:

-- Post you own original wildlife (animals, birds, insects) photos!  Anything not your own photo will be removed without comment and may lead to being blocked.

-- Any posted photo must be of a free/wild animal.  Pictures from zoos, aquariums, enclosures or of domestic animals will be removed without comment.

-- To ensure everyone has an opportunity for their posts to be seen, we recommend posting only once per day.  While a few extras are sometimes acceptable please be sure not to post more than three times a day.  Posting more frequently may lead to posts being removed as spam without comment.

-- Please do not post more than 3 photos per day (this counts from within albums as well). Excessive posting may also result in being blocked without comment.

-- Links to blogs or other outside posts (500px, Flickr) are fine if they are clearly about wildlife.  If you are posting a photo from an outside photo sharing site, please make sure the thumbnail is the the focus on not just a link.  While we prefer photos posted within G+, we can understand wanting to link from another online portfolio.

-- Photos that are not relevant to wildlife / blog links that show no clear evidence of being relevant to wildlife will be blocked.  Basically, post spam = get blocked.

-- Please make sure the wildlife in your photo can be seen.  Dots of ducks in a photo of a mountain and lake is not wildlife photography - it is landscape photography that has some small animals in it.  Saying they are there does not compensate for the lack of visibility of the wildlife.

-- YouTube videos, gifs or other animated postings will be removed without comment.  Postings of this type lead to being blocked.

Other things to consider:

-- It appears that one of the things likely to get your posts marked as possible spam is posting multiple images to a community (single or multiple) within a short period of time. If you're one that falls into this automatic detention from Google: Your posts may not immediately show up.  A moderator would have to approve the photos to be shown.  No harm done; just give the moderators some time to get to reviewing any posts marked as spam.

--  While posting an album is acceptable, be aware that posting a single photo will garner you more views and interactions.

-- Please be aware of the sections for the community and post to the right area.  While posting in the wrong community is not an issue in a single instance and a moderator may relocate to the correct area, please be aware that continued mis-postings may result in being considered spam.

-----  Your Best Photos: Self-explanatory we would think.  This is an area for select single photos you feel are your best work.
-----  Albums:  If you are going to post an album of photos, please use this area to separate them from the other areas.
---- Help with ID: Post photos here when you are in need of identifying your wildlife subject.  If someone can help we will try. The guidelines of non-caged or domestic animals still applied to this category
----  Tips:  Anything you would like to share around wildlife photography?  Put it here! Original work still applies
---- Discussion:  This is an area for any wildlife discussion.  Please keep the postings on topic and the discussion civil and respectful.  Not being either will result in being blocked.
---- Community Standards - NO PHOTOS:  This area is where you will see the latest information on community standards.  It is where this is being read from.

Enjoy everyone!___

Best of the weekend: Sometimes it is nice to have those days where the clouds aren't playing around with light and you can use everything the sun throws out to capture the local wildlife.  Before the winds kicked up later in the morning, the water was an excellent source of reflections.

Usually going through what I have taken over a weekend to show as 'best' is a personal choice on what to share, but this week it was flat easy.  Being it good or bad, this shot defaulted to the best from the weekend as it was the only one that resulted from the one outing.  The weather wasn't the best with bald grey skies meaning most everything was either backlight like crazy, or in shadow with no detail.

Only at the end of my morning did the light start to balance out to pull anything out of what was around.  Which in all honestly wasn't that much to begin with.

Not a lot from the weekend, but what there was I am happy about

The weather being more of a variable than it usually is this time of year, The Sanctuary contends with good light, but not a lot of wildlife action.

The sunset on Sat was lining up to have all the right components - A rain front moving through the last hour of the day. The sunset wasn't the best it could have been, but 15 min later the blue hour saved the evening by ensuring the trip was indeed worth it.

Not a good weekend for wildlife at the sanctuary, but a decent sunrise.

And it does go to show that the best time to shoot vertical is right after you shoot horizontal (or vice versa in this particular case)

#Bestoftheweekend

Finally getting back into the swing of things after the holidays and some travel.

A decent morning which made me glad I decided to pack a pocket camera to augment the wildlife kit, and with the rains in SoCal, a lot of of the animals were out of their normal areas which led to the opportunity to have a group of 4 Coyotes share their space with me while hunting rabbits. They are shot at 400mm on a crop sensor, but are not cropped in post, so they quickly got use to me and let me hang around them for almost 2 hours

With 4 days to head out over the holiday, it was a treat to get out every morning and see what was going on in the area.  Some new visitor's captured, and a lot of walking lead to an enjoyable weekend

Sharing out the best handful of shots from the weekend, and the fuller post with everything from Nov will be going up on soon on http://ptdavis.photography

best of the weekend.  The weather patterns have been holding with the pure, unadulterated lack of cloud cover.  This is great for working withe wildlife at sunrise as there isn't an impairment to leveraging the golden hues first thing in the morning.

with the upcoming long weekend, I am looking forward to getting out a few extra days as the month is moving closer to the end.

Sunset at Dockweiler State Beach

Even with high winds having moved out the majority of clouds from the coast, and kicking up what could be described as a sandstorm from the beach  -- holding out to see what sunset gives means you have at least a chance to walk away with something on the card to work with.

Haven't taken it out as much as I have liked, but finally jumped to the full converted DSLR for IR.  These are just the ones that have come back with me after the intent of seeing what it can do.  Still learning how it works with the light.

Been behind in posting my monthly wildlife wrap ups from the Sanctuary - This is everything from September and Oct.  A Shoulder injury has kept me from getting out as much as I usually enjoy to, but it still doesn't stop me :)

Fall colors in a heat wave!

It is amazing how consistent, and crazy the weather can be.    Last weekend, the temperature was hitting above 100 degrees (in OCT!), but even with that, some of the trees are holding true with it being time to start changing the color of their leaves.

Best from the weekend (well, the last 2)

With last week being the photowalk and all that, I still made it out to the sanctuary, but hadn't been able to edit until just the last day or so.   Best of the last couple of weekends

Best from the weekend.

While I did get out to my normal wildlife haunts, this weekend was the World Wide Photowalk and was able to push myself out of my routine.

These were taken at Huntington Beach Pier in CA.  The weather was great for light to catch the surfer and volley ball players.

Not something I have done in a while - posting to any of the daily themes.  Thought I'd give it a whirl for today.

best from the weekend.

Finally bit the bullet and converted one of my older DSLRs to a full IR only camera.  Only been able to get out with it once during the day so far, and gave a try at start trails with it.

July wrap up from the Sanctuary.  Not one of the more spectacular months in the area, but it is Summer and time for the heat to push a lot of the inhabitants out to cooler areas.

Tried out a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary for the first weekend of the month.  Much better than the Tamron, but still thinking that the resluts from my Canon 100-400 v1 gives better results (even with cropping in to match the 600mm)
