A couple of favorites from the weekend

The lighting wasn't the best for those animals flying in the sky - a grayish background of clouds doesn't help to pull the details out in the feathers, but here are a couple of favorites from this past weekend's outing.

Best from the weekend

Finally!  A break in the dreaded June Gloom in SoCal and the sun actually breaking through for sunrise.  The only downside to that is sunrise is at 5:20 in the morning, so it is rough to get going when you are really a night owl at heart.

It is always good to know that breaking the rules can produce a good result.  One other person arrived  during the golden hour and was nice enough to work at having me understand that shooting into the sun is always a bad idea ;)

more at http://ptdavs.photograohy These and more going up on the blog in the next couple of days

Re-edits

What do you do when you have had 3 weeks when weather has sucked for getting out with the camera?  For me - it is usually a stuck at home, but the couple of projects I have been working on have fire as a ingredient so I've been working out how to accomplish what I want with out setting the house on fire :)

So, since the last update from Lightroom CC (not the most recent) I'e gone back to some pics from the past years and see what new ones I could come away with.

Thought I'd put them out there as on my blog I'll be putting them in the respective galleries and not a post on their own.

Results from the Sanctuary for May.  With the weather not looking good for sun in the morning (when everything is active), I am closing out the month and putting these out there.

Not sure how the next month will pan out as it seems the SoCal June Gloom has officially set in.

Best from the weekend

A longer weekend meat being able to get some more quality time with nature this past weekend.

Rented the Tamrom 150-600 to give it a try and wasn't all that impressed to be honest; but stuck with it over the weekend and came away with a few decent shots to share

Another Stuck at Home project -

Was able to borrow a 1:1 macro for a time and finally got around to trying a macro focusing rail I picked up a while ago; and was able to continue to learn some lighting techniques with Catcus v6 triggers on a pair of Canon 430-EXIIs + L & XL Rouge Flash benders and other modifiers

It is amazing how much 'fur' berries have on them.  I was really short of ideas on subjects as there is just too much wind for anything really outside with a 100mm 1:1 as you are so close to the subject that insets are wary and did I mention the wind!

To be honest - I am not totally off berries for the time being - all.that.fur...... :)

Best from the weekend.

Sometimes the best from an outing are good pictures to have, but also can express the hardships that animals in the wild have to deal with.   You can go out with the hope to come back with that best looking Bobcat or hawk in flight photo anyone has ever seen, but the realities of the wild can offer you up something different.  Not something that I would think would ever be put in anyone's portfolio, but something which should still be shared.

The first photo was an opportunity that literally popped up as I was walking back to my vehicle for the day, overhead I caught a blur of a flash accompanied with the noise of a large population of wading birds (Black Necked Stilts) - which usually means Predator.  In a heartbeat almost faster than I could get the camera to my eye was a Cooper Hawk having picked up a chick for it's nextme... more »

The second is one of those encounters that everyone at the Sanctuary wants to have:  A personal encounter with one of the local Bobcats.  After some initial shots and what seemed like an eternity, but probably only a couple of min, this guy came to the realization that I was not there to harm him and was comfortable enough to walk within 10 feet of me to get a series of close ups at 400mm of him walking by.  Looks like unfortunately it has had some health issues and Mange has set in.  There are so few in the area that you hate to see any of them succumb to something like a parasite, but at least the weather gives it more of a fighting chance than any other place where exposure could cause an issue.

Circle of Life - not everything is always perfect in front of your lens, but still just as important to capture.

Best from the weekend.

With only one day to head out as the weather was recovering from some rain that came through the area, and a seriously cloudy Saturday, Sunday was a great day weather wise: Nice sun, no wind on the water; but not a lot of critters.  Probably the rain storms pushed them out a bit and haven't returned.

A couple of "pleased with" shots from the weekend though with the light results from the outing.

I am so happy with digital these days as the number of shots you need to take with the hope of catching any of the Swallows in focus is stupidly insane if you had to stick to film.

Some favorites from the weekend:

While hanging out under a tree waiting to see if recently returned Black Skimmers would start to take flight, a couple of Tree Sparrows were skimming the water and landing on the branches just above my head.

They really seemed nonplussed with me being within reaching distance of them, actually almost showing off at times.

The cloudy day which was giving me concern over taking shots against it actually worked in this condition as it helped bring out the detail of the feathers with them being so close.  Less of a jump in dynamic range from the subject to the sky, so less issue with silhouetting against the sky

Pretty much a good start to the monthly takeaways from the Sanctuary

April's Round up from the Sanctuary

Decent Light for the month, but the weather (or lack there of) has really changed the migrating counts in the area.  As compared to previous years, the numbers of birds and such are really down and while you can still always go and come away with subjects, they aren't there in the variety there used to be.

Monthly results from the Sanctuary.

March was tough as temps hit record highs at the beginning of the month and then latter part is starting to show signs of an early June Gloom again - and that with most migrations through the area complete it is a little sparse for subjects at times.

The Feb Monthly wrap up from the Sanctuary - a decent month for the most part.  Still not seeing the wildlife that was around this time of year from previous years, but there is always enough to keep me returning.

something that I have gotten into over the last couple of years is long exposure photography.  I love my B+W 10-stop as it opens up scenes beyond simple clicks or HDR compositions (which are another enjoyment I have - to create realistic HDR composites).

Doing some time wasting on the interwebs I came across a comparison of LEE filters to some coming out from Formatt-Hitech out of the UK.  Having used Cokin filters in the past, I wanted to jump to the square format once I got into an upgrade cycle for my filters but found the only real option of LEE was just too expensive to I went the screw-in filter route and step down rings.  This didn't bother me too much as I stopped using grads years ago, but this also meant writing off some of the more intense filters as they were conly coming out in square format.  B+W was the first that had a excellent quality screw in filter to complete with theLEE... more »

That previous thought got away from me there.......what I was getting at was that Formatt-Hitech had a ND 4.8 (16-stop) they were producing with great reviews and when I caught they were selling them as a screw in as well - I jumped at it (especially since I caught one before a recent price jump).

This is the first chance to get out with it, and it wasn't the best day to really put it through some paces, but I am pleased with what it did under the conditions.  Metering the scene as it was, I had a setting of 1/125s, f/10,ISO100 - putting on that filter extended my exposure to 480s (8 min!).  This was taken at 4:30 in the afternoon, just shy of an hour away from sunset.

The waves rendered as a nice cotton candy effect and there were people coming and going in front of the lens checking out the rocks which didn't even catch on the sensor in the slightest.

Looking forward to getting this one out and pushing it as soon as the weather and my time from work aligns.

Last year I started with a concept to push myself to learn more small table top studio concepts and have classified them as "Stuck at Home" projects.

Having some extra time at the end of 2014, I worked on a couple of ideas farmed from the internet.  The one in this gallery was 'Smoke Trails".  Full explanation can be found on my photo blog: http://wp.me/p4BYmg-1zd___Please engage with me over in my G+ Page account(+PandT Photos ) where I am working to move my photo posting over this year.

Starting off 2015 with a new view to how I would like to engage with social media.  I am working to move my postings over to a G+ page instead of a personal direct account.  Head into the original post to engage with me - comments and shares are disabled on this post.

I will also be focusing on posting in sets to match what I am posting on my personal photo blog http://ptdavis.photography and not trying to chase a photo theme - that just took the fun out of it for me last year.

So if you are following me, and would like to follow what I will be posting, please feel free to add my page ( +PandT Photos ) to your circles as over time I will be having my photography shared from there.  Hope to see everyone that has this account in their circles to add me from the new account.

Looking forward to seeing you all in 2015!
