"I have said that Texas is a state of mind, but I think it is more than that. It is a mystique closely approximating a religion. And this is true to the extent that people either passionately love Texas or passionately hate it and, as in other religions, few people dare to inspect it for fear of losing their bearings in mystery or paradox. But I think there will be little quarrel with my feeling that Texas is one thing. For all its enormous range of space, climate, and physical appearance, and for all the internal squabbles, contentions, and strivings, Texas has a tight cohesiveness perhaps stronger than any other section of America. Rich, poor, Panhandle, Gulf, city, country, Texas is the obsession, the proper study, and the passionate possession of all Texans." - John Steinbeck

+Erika Sehnert & I have been using this amazing (and free!) set of document and website templates from Google & Michelle Rago to plan our wedding and we have found them to be extremely helpful. So much of the logistics is simply laid out in front of you.
We ultimately went with +Squarespace for our website because it has such a nice and simple UI and can also hook up with Google Docs to, for example, collect addresses or RSVPs into a spreadsheet.
Definitely spread the word if you know anyone who is going to be doing any #wedding planning in the near future!

Some incredible images and video from NASA's GOES satellite of hurricane Sandy barreling towards up the East Coast. Looks like it's just a matter of time before it starts dumping all that moisture. Scary!

Are you fucking serious?
"Also, when applying our policies, we may make exceptions based on artistic, educational, or documentary considerations, or when there are other substantial benefits to the public from not taking action."
So, when exactly does something cross the line from art to porn because, so far, it looks like just showing a nipple is pornographic.
How about actually creating some legitimate guidelines, Google?

+Business Insider lays out twenty major trends that will dominate America's economic and political future.
The political polarization trend, fueled (I suspect) by the media and improvements in communication & search technologies (+Google, anyone?), is especially worrying to me. We definitely have some significant challenges to face in the coming decades, so we have to figure out a way to return to collaboration and compromise in our political discussions. There is definitely a strong generational component as well. And all sides seem to believe we are headed towards a collapse.
Well, I don't believe it has to go that way!

Well, this is certainly one of the more interesting things I've heard from politicians this election cycle. Apparently, since 1961 the private sector (I.e., excluding government jobs) has added more jobs under Democratic presidents than under Republican presidents!

Among the most mind-blowing facts I have learned in the past 5 years is that there are in fact more bacterial cells living in and on my body than there are human cells that make up their scaffolding.
All politics aside, the myth of the self-made man just couldn't be more false given this reality.

Yet another policy effort to restrict the free exchange of ideas and information on the internet. This time, like with ACTA, it is being crafted under the guide of a "free" trade agreement, behind closed doors and without input from the public. Clearly these multinational corporations and indeed our own governments have no intentions to cease their attacks on free discourse on the internet until they can lock it down. We must not let them.
We must remain vigilant!

For the curious, +Wolfram|Alpha now allows you to analyze your profile and social network on Facebook. It's kind of creepy realizing the detailed kinds of analyses that can be run about me by essentially every app I've added on FB, but I am happy to at least be empowered to see the information myself thanks to Wolfram Alpha.

This +Guild Wars 2 review comes from the perspective of a longtime WoW player. I've played WoW since the vanilla days and it definitely feels like development on the game has stagnated, even with a new expansion on the horizon. Sounds like now I may have to check out GW2, at least once I can afford it.

I have to admit, this has been one of my biggest fears with automated automobiles. It seems time after time our security protocols have been shown to be permeable. Still though, I can't imagine sufficiently robust hardware/software wouldn't be much safer than humans on the road!

Bach's Crab Canon is such an intriguing piece of music. It's wonderful to listen to it as the notes are traced along the manuscript.

It is impossible to deny that there seem to be recurring patterns when you look at the history of human civilization. Like the seasons of the year or an individual human life, societies are born, grow, mature and die with a startling regularity. Indeed, this regularity traces back in part to the temperaments of co-identifying individuals who shared common experiences during formative years of their lives. The seemingly inescapable desire of each new generation to right the perceived injustices in their parents way of life manifests in a tick-tock of recurring behaviors and sociological structures.
Combining with the larger trend of religious-secular development produces resonant cycles that have produced such wonders as the Renaissance and such horror as the Third Reich. As globalization progresses, we have seen the gradual harmonization of human civilizations across international borders,... more »

+Google Fiber has the potential to revolutionize broadband communications in America. This article discusses some of the new possibilities it will offer over traditional cable broadband and television, and what that industry will be paying the most attention to in Google's grand experiment.
I'm very interested about the fiberhood model they are using to roll out the service, and whether that means it will be offered in locations other than Kansas City sooner than I originally thought.
