Spent some time Friday Night testing my new #g15  out at a local park and cemetery. 

I think I'm going to like the faster f/1.8-2.8 28-135mm equivalent lens as it is much faster when zoomed than the G1X.

Meet my new little friend

Frequent readers will know my (Gene) love for my #Canon   #G1X  which has been my walk around camera for about the last year (which in turn replaced my G12 in this role)

Yesterday, I decided to place an order for a Canon #G15  after seeing some of the great shots that +Sara Schiavi takes with it and also reading that the lens is much faster at 1.8-2.8 across the 28-135mm range. This also gives the camera a 5X optical zoom compared the the 4x (28-105) on the G1X.

I'm also interested to see how much quicker the camera is as the shutter lag is down to .22 sec and the camera is up to 10 FPS.

Once it arrives, I'll be posting a more detailed review of its performance here in Canon Users.

This is an image from high up in the backcountry of Grand Teton National Park.  This image was shot at sunrise from behind the Tetons.  There is much to explore up there, and I'm looking forward to going back this year.  Many techniques used in this image are demonstrated in my image editing videos:http://www.chipphillipsphotography.com/Other/Videos/21945010_GhtPKD

#autoawesome  appears to work beautifully. This is a series of images I am using for a timelapse project - just wanted to check out this new motion feature and see what all the hubbub is about. 

Taken in #Portland   #Oregon  During 2013 Cinco De Mayo Festival. 

Tip : It took roughly an hour or so for this to appear in the album so be patient after you upload. Eventually it will process it and you'll see a moving image in the series somewhere. Mine was mixed in the middle of all the photos.

Playing with light and focus.
Just an experiment using a reversal ring with a Canon 50mm f1.8. Quite a challenge to get something in focus, but you can get so close.

I highly recommend the +Moose Peterson Hoya Circular Polarizers if you can find them.

They are warming CP's which even with my digital DSLR I really like for the feel it gives the shots.

I have the 58, 72, and 77 version of it for my different #Canon  lenses.

Start Somewhere
Whether gone, going, or waiting, we all must...

This image is another angle of the same tree I posted in late February ( http://www.chrismackay.me/2013/02/26/forevergreen ). It is an HDR, comprised of 5 images, spanning 5 Ev, all taken with my Canon PowerShot A480 running CHDK (non destructive) firmware, and then processed with Nik Software's HDR Efex Pro 2.

Hammer & Sickle

It's time for me to put up some more of my Chernobyl and Pripyat photos from last year, first, because it will soon be the anniversary of the Chernobyl explosion, and second, because it will soon be the anniversary of my visit last year.

Chernobyl and Pripyat are enormously rewarding photo destinations, yet, they are also enormously frustrating photo destinations too.  The coat of arms of the USSR, seen here, tops the tallest building in Pripyat, and to capture this shot I was 16 floors below the level of the subject, more than half a mile away, and off to the lower left of the subject to minimize trees blocking the subject.  I had to do a lot of work to present the photo perspective as straight on as I could, but it's not perfect.  Maybe it's the best that could be done given the circumstances?

Picking up a couple of more of these as an early birthday present.

I'm finding myself using more memory card space since I'm traveling more and dumping cards less and also I'm now using SD cards in the 5D Mark III.

I'm finding myself shooting RAW/JPG combo on the G1X and 5D3 since then  I have a jpg to share from the road then a RAW file to edit/process later at home in Lightroom 4.

Looking to try a prime-lens?

A great "second" lens for any #Canon  shooter is the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 which is known affectionately as the "nifty fifty".

On a cropped sensor camera, the lens will shoot like a 80mm lens, which makes it great for portrait work and also general "walk-around" photography.

The f/1.8 means you can create dreamy "bokeh" with limited depth-of-field.

For the price, it is a good investment and introduction to what a prime lens can do.
