I hope that Marshal Andy will give me a nickname soon and let me be an honorary sidekick. My mom named me after a cowboy after all.

We're at the Great Smoky Mountains Salamander Ball for the Discover Life in America biology project. It's a masquerade ball where you are encouraged to dress as Smoky Mountain wildlife. So, with last minute invitations, Ruth and I whipped up some synchronous firefly costuming.

Does your State Representative Support Tennessee's Hunger Games?

I've updated some information regarding Stacey Campfield's welfare and education bill that would make children responsible for their family's financial safety. If you haven't already called your state senator and state representative there's still time. The Senate is scheduled to vote on this bill on the floor today. It will likely be on the House floor within a week.

My blog post also includes a list of state senators and representatives who have already voted at least once in committee to pass this bill. Find out if your representative is on the list and then please call to ask them to change their mind before the floor vote.

The Tennessee State Senate is scheduled to have a floor vote today and another House committee approved the bill yesterday. There's still time to help take action to stop a bill that would make children responsible for their family's financial safety. I've posted a list of state representatives and senators who have already voted for this insanity at least once in committee, along with other updates and how you can help.

For Vols fans interested in recruiting, I wanted to pass along that a friend of mine in Knoxville, +john cave osborne, is launching a new show on Tennessee Sports Radio that will focus on UT sports and recruiting with an interesting fan-oriented social media twist. The show will also be available outside the Knoxville market via an app. John has the details on his blog. I just wanted to pass it along in case you were interested.

If you have friends in Tennessee, I'd appreciate your help in getting them to call their state legislators today and tomorrow in advance of Thursday's planned vote to pass the "Education to End Poverty Act" -- a bill that would reduce emergency welfare assistance to families based on the children's school performance. Meanwhile, here in Tennessee, our state legislature is looking at creating our very own version of the Hunger Games by threatening to take away emergency funds from our poorest families if the child doesn't perform well in school. Because, you know, kids won't get the eye of the tiger about good school performance unless they're literally hungry. Not surprisingly, this legislation comes from the same man who is also trying to force schools to report to parents if a teacher even suspects a child "might be homosexual."
