Duoyishu

One of the absolute highlights of our current journey in China. We spent the night in a small guesthouse in Sheng Village, amongst the local Hani people. This not only gave us the opportunity to... undertake some night photography in the terraced rice fields, but it also allowed us to gain some insight into the traditional Hani culture and customs.

"Back to the Wall"

This image was taken at Honolulu Zoo in January 2013. The lyrics and song that immediately played in my mind even as I was pressing the shutter was Divinyl's "Back to the Wall".

Vale Chrissy Amphlett (25 October 1959 – 21 April 2013)
...
"You've got the upper hand
Well I've got nothing to lose
When I'm trapped in a corner like this
I might light a fuse
Don't push me too far
You better watch what you do

When my back's to the wall
I might do anything at all
When my back's to the wall
I might take any chance at all
When my back's to the wall
I might do anything "

As one decsends along the the Valley of the Waters path, each fall is naturally below the preceding one. From Sylvia Falls, there is a clear aerial view of Lodore Falls and this was the composition I settled on even before I reached Lodore.

"Sylvia Falls"

www.lightandmotionphotography.com

Sylvia Falls is probably the most majestic of the falls in the Valley of the Waters. I have photographed the falls previously and used a typical frontal composition:

http://www.lightandmotionphotography.com/gallery_513362.html#photos_id=7266896

This time I wanted a unique viewpoint, and the colours of the escarpment really stood out against the overcast skies - so I used this as a distant focal point.

Althoutgh there are numerous majestic falls on the Valley of the Waters track, it was Lodore Falls which I found most interesting. The large and colourful sandstone boulders provide a natural anchor for this image.

We are fortunate to have a 4 day Easter Weekend in Australia, and what better way to utilise the opportunity than go on a photoshoot. We chose the Valley of the Waters walk in the Blue Mountains, somewhere we have been planning to get back to since an initial visit during a workshop three years ago.

We arrived early to a deserted car park which was just as well, as by lunchtime it seemed that every one else in Sydney had the same idea. We had some wonderful morning light to work with, and the overcast skies acted like a softbox, removing the potential harshness of the sun for our waterfall images.

In this album we will document the walk with our images. This map traces our route from the Conservation Hut to Red Rock Falls

It's an easy walk down, but take plenty of water for the walk back up ( Ascent - 303m)

Mauna Kea

Mauna Kea is an inactive Volcano, but is the state of Hawaii’s tallest peak. It reaches 4207m above sea level, but its base to peak height is 10,200m - much of it below sea level. Its base to peak height is unsurpassed. Mt. Everest by comparison has a base to peak height of 4650m (8848m above sea level).

This image was taken at sunset from the peak of Mauna Kea, after acclimatisation at 2900m .  Although the image suggests otherwise, the conditions for photography were difficult with the inspired oxygen 40% less than at sea level, subzero temperatures and winds of up to 70km/h.

Nevertheless Andy and I were blessed with a simultaneous sunset and a moonrise with a 99% full moon. This resulted in different light sources from opposite directions which I attempted to capture with this 11 image panorama.

"Sandy Beach"

Sandy Beach Reserve lies at the base of Koko Crater, or Kohelepelepe on the South Shore of Oahu. It features jagged volcanic lava rock and is generally regarded as the one of the best body boarding sites on Oahu. Its currents however are treacherous due to the abrupt change in depth along the shoreline, and the rips are difficult to read.

Finding a safe vantage point on the volcanic rocks to set your tripod or a fishing rod is also a trial, as some of the dawn fishermen and myself can readily attest to.

"The Banyan Tree"

The Banyan tree was imported from India and is not native to Hawaii. It germinates in a host tree and drops its roots down to the ground. A bird for example may drop a seed into the leaves of a palm or other tree, and from there it grows and sends long rope-like roots that gradually thicken and embrace the host tree. Eventually the host dies.

This has resulted in many myths surrounding the Banyan tree, including themes of holy union, sacrifice and immortality. Generally the local belief is that Banyans are peaceful resting spots where lost spirits reside, however there are many more sinister beliefs associated with specific trees.

"Makapuu Tidepools"

These tide-pools which only exist as a separate entity at low tide, have their own unique ecosystem. There is a rich diversity of life including coral and many juvenile fish. I hope I didn't upset the balance too much as I stood in the pool being nibbled at for 30 min or so. These pools are recognized as an important nursery for many species.

In the background are Manana Is...land (Rabbit Island) and Kaohikaipu Island (Turtle Island) which are State Seabird Sanctuaries, home to numerous avian species including over 10,000 Wedge-tailed Shearwaters, as well as the Hawaiian Monk Seal

Tasmania

Our thoughts are with our fellow Australians affected by the devastating bushfires in Tasmania this week, particularly near Hobart. Support for those who have lost their homes, businesses and even loved ones can be given here:
