In The Calm of Morning

For me, the first hour of daylight in the morning is the most serene and beautiful hour of the day.  Sure, sunsets can be and many times are equally spectacular.  But the calm of the morning brings a peace that can last the entire day.  It is not to be missed.

A New Day

Pomarine Jaeger

This seabird is rarely seen near land, preferring to spend it's time at sea.  So it was a nice treat this past Fall when this jaeger decided to spend a couple of weeks loafing on the beaches of Fort de Soto.

Kids, don't try this at home.  

This was taken through my 500mm lens while the sun was rising above the trees.  I liked the rim light on the Anhinga and thought it would make a cool photo with the Anhinga silhouetted by the sun.  As the sun rose higher and the Anhinga was completely within the sun's radius, the light was so bright that you couldn't see the Anhinga anymore.

I used Live View to setup the shot and avoid permanent blindness by looking through the viewfinder.  Still, this was tough to line up as the sun was still quite bright and shining right in my face as I locked up the tripod.

This type of shot is excellent for finding all the dust spots on your lens and sensor too!  :-)

While I don't frequently admit that I've got my head in the clouds, I certainly did on this morning.  By the time we drove to the lookout at the top of this mountain, the fog was quite thick and it was raining.  But just 10 minutes later the rain stopped, the fog lifted and we were able to enjoy a beautiful view from high atop the mountain.

The road below is the Oregon Coast highway that runs the length of the state right along the coast line.  The road has plenty of beautiful vistas, iconic bridges and fantastic lighthouses.  The photography opportunities just along this road are so numerous that I believe you could spend 2-3 weeks just working this road from the Washington state line to the California state line.

If only I had that kind of time.

The iconic double-falls of the Columbia River Gorge.  There were so many people there when I took this that I was happy to get a shot with only about a dozen people in the frame.  If only they would have a photographer's only hour!

While I usually consider a White Ibis to be a junk bird because they are so common and easily found, there are times when you simply have to stop and click.  This guy was perfectly content to preen on an otherwise slow day at the wetlands.  As a result of my patience and not simply passing him by, I got a couple of keepers I like.

I also have to keep reminding myself that one person's junk bird is another person's life bird.  All should be appreciated.

Now if only I could apply that to a Coot!
