Hello G+ I was wondering if I could get some advice from the media gurus. What would you recommend as a good fairly cheap video editing software. There are hundreds of products out there but I would rather have opinions of people that use them than advertisements. Any advice appreciated!

I have a question on behalf of a buddy of mine who is trying to get in shape. He is trying to take up running but is plagued by shin splints. I was wondering if others here have encountered this and how they dealt with it. Thanks for any advice!

I have a question for the folks here, needing some advice or perspective. I have quite a few friends that are atheists, and it is very difficult to defend/share religion with them when the conversation turns towards actions and behavior. With so many professed Christians doing (what they and I consider) hateful things it really undermines most of the points I would like to make. For example, the folks from the westboro Baptist church who picked funerals and have the "God hates Fags" and "Thanks God for 9/11" signs and similar. Many people who claim to follow God seem the most judgmental and hateful. Now, I understand that much of this is human nature and they don't represent the majority, but these actions make it very difficult to make a case for Christianity. I get that all I can control are my actions and I must show Jesus through my own life, but it is very frustrating to see... more »

A CAT TAKES BLIND DOG FOR WALKS

Dogs are natural enemies of cats. But not Terfel and Pwditat. Terfel, a blind dog in Holyhead, North Wales is enjoying walkies again thanks to Pwditat, a stray cat.

Eight-year-old Terfel kept bumping into things and spent most of his time stuck in his basket after being diagnosed with cataracts. Things changed when owner Judy Godfrey-Brown let a stray cat into her home.

The cat walked up to Terfel and led him out of his basket and into the garden. She has been helping him find his way around ever since, The Sun reported.

"I've never seen anything like it most cats and dogs hate each other," Judy, a retired civil servant said. "But Pwditat immediately seemed to know that Terfel is blind."

"She uses her paws to help guide him. They are glued to each other and even sleep together... more »

It's finally out.

I'm sitting here on a plane, flying to Minneapolis after signing 1280(!) books last night at the midnight release of A Memory of Light. That marks it as my largest signing ever, though a whole lot of readers (understandably) grabbed their pre-signed books and ran off to read them, rather than waiting for a personalization. [Assistant Peter's Note: Brandon wrote this yesterday. Today he's in Chicago.]

Harriet did a reading, which my good friend Earl filmed (along with the Q&A). I'm sure he plans to post that as soon as the editing is done, and we'll get you a link. I'll be doing many more signings and readings in the coming weeks. http://brandonsanderson.com/events (Of special note is the signing in Lexington, where the bookseller wanted me to let you know that he has been able to get Michael Whelan to send prints of the cover of A... more »

Isn't it amazing that George Carlin - comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent...and so very appropriate.

A Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways ,but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reducedour... more »

Thanks for inclusion in this group! The articles here have been a fascinating read and I'm looking forward to much discussion. As seemingly one of the only Libertarians in a smallish town in west Texas I find myself in a lot of debates that no one seems to make much headway on. I've already found good articles and sources here that will be a great help.

This is an excellent analysis of the issues we faced in this election, and will continue to face so long as we allow the the vote to fracture along all of the wrong lines.

"I humbly and sadly disagree. I think this split in our culture is about the church. I think it is about the marginalized (the people the church should love and support). The Democrats made a compelling case that they cared about those people. We in the church have not made that same compelling argument. Even on election day, in some of our responses, we demonstrated a lack of care for people..."

So, Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 Billion (That's more money than I make in a week ) and they say Star Wars: Episode VII is coming.

Who would direct? Oh, I don't know, maybe the one who directed one of Disney's highest grossing films recently, The Avengers? Joss Whedon has a license to print money and he's spending his credits on some Marvel properties.

He can handle ensemble casts and knows how to do space stories...  If Joss were to direct these movies, he always tends to bring along some familiar faces. Harrison Ford was 41 years old at the end of the original Star Wars trilogy. Guess who else is 41 right now, perfect for the role, and already has ins to Mr. Whedon.

Wait for it.

That's right.

Nathan Fillion.

*Run For Your Life from Zombies... for real*

All across North America the zombie fad is taking hold, from AMC's The Walking Dead to news and media using the term any chance they get. The latest fun thing I've seen is this super neat idea called Run For Your Lives - Zombie races! What's a zombie race you ask?  If you are a runner expect a 5k obstacle course including rough terrain, huge up to your waist pools of fake blood, slippery walls to climb and of course being chased by thousands of zombies. If you are a zombie, expect to be transformed into the part of the undead. Makeup artists to do the gore makeup for you.... Including costumes, face wounds, sunken eyes and tons of fake blood.

 The runners have generally 2 or 3 "health flags" that they wear around they waist as they make their way through the crazy course, dodging the zombies who clawfor their ... more »

Should we start a petition that if charged his sentence be no greater than probation for life to be exempted if someone else molests his children?

Zombies: vengeance and fear
It seems +M Sinclair Stevens is making a bit of a sport out of baiting me to respond to provocation. Pushing my buttons as it might be. This time about zombies of all things. Unseemly though it sounds, this form of taunt has a long cultural history in Western civilization, not least of which is the art of 'flyting' described so memorably in the Norse epic of Beowulf.

It seems oddly befitting that +Alexander Becker (see https://plus.google.com/u/0/100500197140377336562/posts/aAGjXxxpXWC), shamelessly enlisting M's device to poke my ribs with a sharp stick, seeks answers to what is essentially a question about Western mythology and its rôle in discussing and explaining the contradictions in our world and our lives to ourselves.

It seems equally befitting that the answer is actually germane to a discussion on vengeance, in which my... more »

Creepers rejoice! X-ray vision may soon come to your smartphone
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
http://alturl.com/tk8gi
JEFFREY VAN CAMP
Scientists have figured out a way to shrink x-ray technlogy, allowing devices like smartphones to have x-ray sensors in them. We explore how this new technology works
In a scientific breakthrough that should excite teenage boys around the globe, scientists from the University of Texas at Dallas have created an imaging chip that could give smartphones, or other small cameras, a form of x-ray vision. This would allow anyone with such a camera to theoretically see through certain types of objects like human skin, drywall, wood, and most other things that were previously only viewable by the likes of Superman. While there are a ton of amazing uses for this technology, those living near pervs and creepers may feel a bit uneasy. It may soon become... more »
Inspired by conversation with +Erick Diaz I have created my personal top 10 anime list. I'm hoping that this will inspire some conversation and other people putting their top 10 up. Feel free to use the blog as a place to air your views, I created it for the purpose. I would like just your list, but I really want to hear why they are your favorites. I have watched a fair amount of anime and am a fan of the genre, but I will definitely be interested to hear what others think to get some new watching ideas.By the way I generally split my perspective on anime into two main groups: fun anime and deep anime. The fun ones are the enjoyable to watch without any real effort at a complex and in depth storyline and are more for pure entertainment, usually action, humor, and pretty colors. The deep anime are ones that are really trying to make a point and have excessive complexity and provoke thought. These can... more »
