Pretty much...

This pseudo-thread pretty much summarizes the difference between Marvel and DC's attitude about their audiences: DC considers it far too risky to show shocking, foreign things in their movies, such as "women," "people of color," or "LGBT characters," especially as primary protagonists, whereas Marvel... well, they have decided that they are going to do whatever the fuck they feel like.

So why am I sharing this now, a few weeks after it spread on the Internets? Because +The Verge decided to run the numbers to see just how they're doing: http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/22/6056617/marvels-movie-business-is-crushing-dcs-and-its-not-close

Turns out Marvel has raked in something like double what DC has from its movies.

(Unsurprisingly, because DC's movies have been averaging "tedious and boring." Seriously, Superman is about as interesting as listening to a lecture about Truth, Justice, the American Way, and the Neitzschean Übermensch from the PR office of the Boy Scouts, without even the homoerotic subtext of Batman's three-way relationship with Robin and the Joker to leaven it. And I think that this attitude of DC's is no small part of why.)

(Also, vi is better than EMACS)

In related news, LEGO finally decided to ship a non-pink set with women in it -- their "Research Institute" set (http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Research-Institute-21110). Except good luck getting it, because the entire production run sold out almost instantly.

And yet, I keep hearing companies explaining why their marketing always slants towards showing a bunch of white men, with scantily clad white women for decoration, and the occasional "exotic" in the background, because it sells so well, they tell us. The coveted demographic of 18-35 white, middle-class men won't buy anything else. There's no market for other things, because people from all the other groups will buy white, middle-class men, but not vice-versa, and there surely isn't enough money that isn't in the hands of white, middle-class men to matter.

You know what I call it when someone comes up with a business plan like that? A chance to make a lot of money at their expense, that's what.

h/t to +Kimberly Chapman, +Capin Chip, and quite a few others for the pseudo-thread -- I unfortunately can't find any reliable original source for it. ___Pretty much...

It's good to know that the geek culture has left its mark in so many places. :)

The Xenomorph Gargoyle of Paisley Abbey

Why does a 750+ year old Scottish Abbey have a Xenomorph (from the Alien movies) gargoyle?

Paisley Abbey was founded in 1245 and then rebuilt some time in the early 1300s well before Ridley Scott's movie obviously. However, it happens that some major renovations were done in the 1990s during which several of the original gargoyles had to be replaced.

Presumably one of the stone masons working on the project was a geek. :D

I have a question for the folks here, needing some advice or perspective. I have quite a few friends that are atheists, and it is very difficult to defend/share religion with them when the conversation turns towards actions and behavior. With so many professed Christians doing (what they and I consider) hateful things it really undermines most of the points I would like to make. For example, the folks from the westboro Baptist church who picked funerals and have the "God hates Fags" and "Thanks God for 9/11" signs and similar. Many people who claim to follow God seem the most judgmental and hateful. Now, I understand that much of this is human nature and they don't represent the majority, but these actions make it very difficult to make a case for Christianity. I get that all I can control are my actions and I must show Jesus through my own life, but it is very frustrating to see... more »

Finally! I have the audible version on my kindle now, and will be diving in soon.

It's finally out.

I'm sitting here on a plane, flying to Minneapolis after signing 1280(!) books last night at the midnight release of A Memory of Light. That marks it as my largest signing ever, though a whole lot of readers (understandably) grabbed their pre-signed books and ran off to read them, rather than waiting for a personalization. [Assistant Peter's Note: Brandon wrote this yesterday. Today he's in Chicago.]

Harriet did a reading, which my good friend Earl filmed (along with the Q&A). I'm sure he plans to post that as soon as the editing is done, and we'll get you a link. I'll be doing many more signings and readings in the coming weeks. http://brandonsanderson.com/events (Of special note is the signing in Lexington, where the bookseller wanted me to let you know that he has been able to get Michael Whelan to send prints of the cover of A Memory of Light. See below this post for details.)

A lot of people are asking what it feels like to be done. That's an odd question to consider for a couple of reasons. In some ways, the Wheel of Time was "done" for me when I read Robert Jordan's last scene back in 2007. The work wasn't done, of course, and I had a very long road ahead of me. And yet, I'd read the ending. We managed to get it into the final book virtually unchanged, with only a few minor tweaks here and there. The sequence (it is more than one scene) that I am referring to most of the time when I talk about this encompasses the entire epilogue of A Memory of Light. Once you get there, you can know you're reading Robert Jordan's words, though of course there are other scenes scattered through the book that he worked on too.

So that was one ending, for me. Another came in January of last year, when I finished the rough draft of this book. Still, there was a great deal of work to do, but I was "done" after a fashion. From there, I transitioned from writing a new Wheel of Time book to doing revisions—and for the last time ever.

Another ending came for me when I handed the book over to Maria from Team Jordan to handle all of the final tweaks from the proofreads and copyedits. That happened late last summer, and with some regret, I stepped away from the Wheel of Time. Like a parent (though a step-parent in this case) waving farewell to a child as they leave the home, I no longer had responsibility for this book in the same way. I was done.

And yet, I wasn't. This month and next I'll be touring for the Wheel of Time. That will probably be the final ending, seeing all of you and sharing in your mixed joy and regret at the finale of this series. Over twenty-three years ago now, I picked up The Eye of the World for the first time, and my life changed. A lot of you have similar stories.

I know how you feel. I've been feeling it for five years now, ever since I read that last scene. There is no glossary in this last Wheel of Time book. We wanted to leave you with the memory of that scene, as Robert Jordan wrote it, for your final impression of the Wheel of Time.

I'm happy I can finally share that scene with you. After five years of waiting, I can talk about it with others and reminisce without having to worry about what I'm spoiling. I hope to chat with as many of you as possible in the upcoming months. For those who can't make it, I'll post some responses to frequently asked questions below.

May you always find water and shade.

Brandon Sanderson
January 8th, 2013

Question: Why aren't you coming to my city? And why do you so often go back to the same places?

Answer: I wish I could get everywhere, but I'm only one person, and touring is rough on the constitution and on the writing. I do try to go new places on every tour, but I also do visit some places repeatedly. This is because certain bookstores and booksellers have supported me since the beginning of my career, when others weren't interested in having me. I feel it important not to skip these stores now that I'm releasing what will likely be the bestselling book of my career.

Question: You said something about cover art prints of A Memory of Light?

Answer: Yes! Brian from Joseph-Beth is one of those booksellers mentioned above. From the start of my career, he's been in my corner, rooting for my books to do well. (And he has probably hand-sold more copies of my books than any person other than myself.) He tends to do awesome things for booksignings. This time, he called up Michael Whelan and asked if he could somehow get prints of the cover to sell.

The result is that we're going to be selling them at that signing, and ONLY that signing. In fact, so far as I know, this is the only place to get prints of the cover painting right now. Mr. Whelan has already signed each one, and I'll be signing them when in Lexington. [Assistant Peter's note: Michael Whelan will also sell them on his own website—we'll put up a link later—at the same price ($95), but getting it from Joseph-Beth will be faster. If you're not going to the signing you can order it here: http://www.josephbeth.com/Products/99990-memory-of-light-limited-signed-art-print.aspx There may also be a few prints of the The Way of Kings cover painting available at the signing itself.]

Question: Any news on the Wheel of Time Encyclopedia?

Answer: Harriet was asked about this at our signing, and she said that it was well on its way. This is not simply an update of the Guide released way back when, but is a comprehensive encyclopedia. It will contain art, and it will include things from Robert Jordan's notes that didn't make it into the series. (Note that the Waygate Foundation, a charity organization, is running a charity drive tied to the Encyclopedia right now.)

Question: What about the outriggers? (The sequel trilogy to the Wheel of Time series that Robert Jordan had planned to write.)

Answer: It's not going to happen. Harriet and I are both firm on this. Robert Jordan wouldn't have wanted it to happen. He said that he wanted the series to be finished, but he did not want anything more. (He was even uncomfortable with the idea of someone like myself finishing the series.)

Beyond this, at the Q&A on Monday, Harriet revealed something I previously haven't been able to tell you but that I've known for quite some time—that Robert Jordan didn't leave much of anything in the way of notes for the Outriggers. There are, quite literally, only two sentences of explanation from RJ telling us what the plot of the outriggers was to be about.

So no, no outriggers. I highly doubt you will see the prequels either, and for similar reasons. All good things must come to an ending. And this is ours.

Question: Why a delayed ebook release for A Memory of Light?

Answer: This is not my decision or Tor's decision, but Harriet's. She is uncomfortable with ebooks. Specifically, she worries about ebooks cutting into the hardcover sales. It isn't about money for her, as the monetary difference between the two is negligible here. It is about a worry that her husband's legacy will be undermined if sales are split between ebooks and hardcovers, preventing the last book of the Wheel of Time from hitting number one on either list. (Many of the bestseller lists are still handling ebooks in somewhat awkward ways.)

As the last books have all hit number one, she doesn't want to risk one of these not hitting number one, and therefore ending the series on a down note. (Even though each Wheel of Time book has sold more than its predecessor, including the ones I have worked on.) I personally feel her worries are unfounded, and have explained that to her, but it is not my choice and I respect her reasoning for the decision. She is just trying to safeguard Robert Jordan's legacy, and feels this is a very important way she needs to do so. After talking about the issue, we were able to move the ebook up from the originally planned one-year delay to instead come out this spring.

I'll try to update the blog [Note: on Brandon's website only] with more questions and answers as I think of them during the tour, or as people ask them to me. Thank you all for reading, and enjoy the final book.___Finally! I have the audible version on my kindle now, and will be diving in soon.

Thanks for inclusion in this group! The articles here have been a fascinating read and I'm looking forward to much discussion. As seemingly one of the only Libertarians in a smallish town in west Texas I find myself in a lot of debates that no one seems to make much headway on. I've already found good articles and sources here that will be a great help.

I really liked this article. It shouldn't matter if you are a Christian or not I think that most people can agree that this person has a very good perspective. Thanks for the post +Michael Baker .

This is an excellent analysis of the issues we faced in this election, and will continue to face so long as we allow the the vote to fracture along all of the wrong lines.

"I humbly and sadly disagree. I think this split in our culture is about the church. I think it is about the marginalized (the people the church should love and support). The Democrats made a compelling case that they cared about those people. We in the church have not made that same compelling argument. Even on election day, in some of our responses, we demonstrated a lack of care for people..."

Recast Nathan Fillion as Han Solo!? Shut up and take my money. What about Eliza Dushku as Leia?

So, Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 Billion (That's more money than I make in a week ) and they say Star Wars: Episode VII is coming.

Who would direct? Oh, I don't know, maybe the one who directed one of Disney's highest grossing films recently, The Avengers? Joss Whedon has a license to print money and he's spending his credits on some Marvel properties.

He can handle ensemble casts and knows how to do space stories...  If Joss were to direct these movies, he always tends to bring along some familiar faces. Harrison Ford was 41 years old at the end of the original Star Wars trilogy. Guess who else is 41 right now, perfect for the role, and already has ins to Mr. Whedon.

Wait for it.

That's right.

Nathan Fillion.

Always loved the National Geographic photo contest. Some amazing shots in there.

"The 24th annual National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest has just wrapped up, and judges will soon be selecting the winners -- but voting for the Viewer's Choice award is open until Friday, July 20, at 9 a.m. National Geographic was kind enough to allow me to share some of these amazing entries with you here, gathered from four categories: Travel Portraits, Outdoor Scenes, Sense of Place, and Spontaneous Moments."___Always loved the National Geographic photo contest. I find myself pessimistic about humanity in general, but really there is as much hope and innovation as there is despair as sadism. Thanks for the post +Lamond B and well done to Brittany Wenger.

Want to do this!

*Run For Your Life from Zombies... for real*

All across North America the zombie fad is taking hold, from AMC's The Walking Dead to news and media using the term any chance they get. The latest fun thing I've seen is this super neat idea called Run For Your Lives - Zombie races! What's a zombie race you ask?  If you are a runner expect a 5k obstacle course including rough terrain, huge up to your waist pools of fake blood, slippery walls to climb and of course being chased by thousands of zombies. If you are a zombie, expect to be transformed into the part of the undead. Makeup artists to do the gore makeup for you.... Including costumes, face wounds, sunken eyes and tons of fake blood.

The runners have generally 2 or 3 "health flags" that they wear around they waist as they make their way through the crazy course, dodging the zombies who claw for their flags as they go.  The pictures look intense with teams of runners and zombies working together to accomplish their goals. Less than 20% of the people who run the race make it to the end "alive" with at least one of their 3 flags remaining. There are usually concerts, food, camping and beer afterwards. Sounds like an awesome geeky time. Maybe i'll join the one in Toronto area in September. Would you be a zombie or a runner?

Hey G+, my extended family and I are going to be visiting Kentucky in a few weeks, specifically Louisville. Can anyone recommend some interesting stuff to do out there? I've found all sorts of stuff on the internet but I'd prefer to hear it from people that live there and/or have visited.
