TEDMED318,637An income at or near the poverty line is strongly correlated with a greater risk of many diseases. Some of the potential reasons are apparent, such as living in environments where it’s harder to exercise, lacking access to fresh fruits and vegetables, being unable to afford medications or having time off to see doctors. That doesn’t fully explain why those with less money are more likely to be smokers or unhealthy eaters or to make other choices detrimental to their health.Research suggests there are hidden reasons. Living with adversity leads to chronic stress that can lead to depression and a loss of self-control. A paper published in the journal Science this spring posits that the worries associated with being poor may affect cognitive function; there’s just not enough brain space left to think beyond basics. Poverty may affect the ability to take on risk and look for long-term solutions to problems. What do we know about the psychology of poverty, and how does it play out in homes, schools and in the healthcare system? What interventions work best to stem the cycle of poverty and ill health, and when do they need to begin?Join a live online event with experts in the field to discuss this critical issue. Get started today by tweeting your questions to #GreatChallenges and we’ll discuss them on air.We hope you'll join us!TEDMED Great Challenges: What is the Psychology of Poverty?2014-07-08 18:00:00112G+
NASA1,421,272Operational Update: The parachute test is delayed one hour, 5 minutes. We will go live now at 11:30am ET. No problem with test, aircraft delay.---Having trouble viewing? Try watching on YouTube: Live: Most-Difficult Orion Parachute Test---This test of the Orion parachute system will be a nail-biter for the engineers who have been working to design it. Join us live to watch a Google+ Hangout from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. EDT, June 25, from the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona. We will push a test version of Orion out of an airplane 35,000 feet above the Arizona desert in its most complex parachute test ever. Watch the test live and hear from Orion engineers who have been testing and building the spacecraft about what they’ve learned so far and what they’re looking forward to seeing when Orion launches into space on its first test flight in December. Exploration Flight Test-1, an uncrewed test of the spacecraft, will send Orion 3,600 miles away from Earth. Orion's parachutes are being tested to ensure they can slow the capsule for a safe landing in the Pacific Ocean as the spacecraft reenters Earth's atmosphere from deep space missions at speeds of up to 20,000 mph. Ask questions now and during the event by posting comments here or on Twitter using the #OrionTest hashtag. For more information, visit: http://go.nasa.gov/1pLa3WR Live: Most-Difficult Orion Parachute Test2014-06-25 17:30:00697G+

TEDMED318,637It’s a concept called “hyperbolic discounting.”  We humans are more likely to place value on things that pay off immediately rather than investing over the long term.  It’s one reason why effort involved in exercising and eating well is often ignored in favor of a quick-fix nap or fast-food burger. Facing this, how can those charged with promoting healthier behaviors and selling products that relate to them achieve their goals?  What can public entities learn from corporate ones, and visa versa? Join our live event to find out. We’ll talk to some of the nation’s most successful organizations and brands to hear their challenges and successes as they promote the importance and desirability of prevention and health.Join our moderator, Kate Lowenstein of Prevention, and our Great Challenges guests: Susan Manber of Digitas Health, Gary Foster of Weight Watchers, Dave Melbourne of Bumble Bee Foods and others! We’ll take questions from our social media audience via #greatchallenges and answer them on air.TEDMED Great Challenges: Marketing Prevention: How do you sell a healthy lifestyle?2014-06-24 18:00:00193G+

TEDMED318,637There's no shortage of news, or worry, about the coming scarcity of healthcare workers. But is that really the case? What if we’ve got enough hands, but just need to align tasks better?Join our live event this Tuesday at Noon Eastern with a few of those on the forefront of rethinking the healthcare workforce. According to a study from The Annals of Family Medicine, one doctor can reasonably help 983 patients in a year working solo. As part of a team, delegating tasks properly, the same doctor could reach 1,947 patients. What needs to happen on all fronts to make that work? How can we handle rural and underserved areas? Who should play bigger roles: Nurses, pharmacists, technicians? What would that mean for costs? What are our future healthcare needs, and how can we meet them? Kick off the conversation today by tweeting your questions and comments to #GreatChallenges and we’ll discuss them on air.Participants include:- Ed Salsberg, George Washington University Center for Health Workforce Research and Policy- Troy Trygstad, Community Care of North Carolina- Audrey Lum, Union Health CenterTEDMED Great Challenges: Shifting Work: Can rethinking the healthcare workforce drive down medical costs?2014-05-20 18:00:00109G+

NASA Goddard65,460On March 29, 2014, an X-class flare burst off the right side of the sun . . . and NASA was watching.Coordinating their observations, five NASA observatories and one ground-based telescope were able to see things in the flare they'd never seen before.  Numerous other NASA spacecraft provided additional data about what was happening on the sun during the event and what the effects were at Earth. Join us at 2:30 p.m. EDT on Thursday, May 8, 2014, as researchers describe how multiple missions worked together to explore the sun's surface and atmosphere, layer by layer, providing unprecedented images of the onset of a solar flare.  In addition to the colorful pictures of the sun that NASA will share, participants will explain how such research can help scientists better understand what sets off these large explosions on the sun. Perhaps, someday scientists may be able to predict their onset, forewarning of the radio blackouts they can cause near Earth – blackouts that can interfere with military, airplane and ship communications.Participants include: Adrian Daw: IRIS project scientist at NASA GoddardAlbert Shih: RHESSI scientist at NASA GoddardSabrina Savage: Hinode deputy project scientist at NASA MarshallLucia Kleint: Bay Area Environmental Research Institute Jeffrey Newmark: NASA HeadquartersNASA Hangout: All Eyes on the Sun2014-05-08 20:30:00653G+

Business Rockstars3,548 We are pleased to host +DR. MICHIO KAKU, Physicist/Futurist  in a discussion about the human brain and it's possibilities. We are taking your questionsSubmit your questions in the comments for a chance to have +Ken Rutkowski relate them to Dr. Michio Kaku in the Hangout! The New York Times best-selling author of PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE, PHYSICS OF THE FUTURE and HYPERSPACE tackles the most fascinating and complex object in the known universe: the human brain.         For the first time in history, the secrets of the living brain are being revealed by a battery of high tech brain scans devised by physicists. Now what was once solely the province of science fiction has become a startling reality. Recording memories, telepathy, videotaping our dreams, mind control, avatars, and telekinesis are not only possible; they already exist.  THE FUTURE OF THE MIND gives us an authoritative and compelling look at the astonishing research being done in top laboratories around the world—all based on the latest advancements in neuroscience and physics.  One day we might have a "smart pill" that can enhance our cognition; be able to upload our brain to a computer, neuron for neuron; send thoughts and emotions around the world on a "brain-net"; control computers and robots with our mind; push the very limits of immortality; and perhaps even send our consciousness across the universe.           Dr. Kaku takes us on a grand tour of what the future might hold, giving us not only a solid sense of how the brain functions but also how these technologies will change our daily lives. He even presents a radically new way to think about "consciousness" and applies it to provide fresh insight into mental illness, artificial intelligence and alien consciousness.  With Dr. Kaku's deep understanding of modern science and keen eye for future developments, THE FUTURE OF THE MIND is a scientific tour de force - an extraordinary, mind-boggling exploration of the frontiers of neuroscience.------------#physics   #michiokaku   #hangoutsonair   #businessrockstars   #thefuturSOON: "Add 120+ IQ Points & Time Travel!"2014-03-22 00:00:0063G+

Google Science Fair1,893,667How can we better understand the creatures of the deep? Come join this Hangout On Air, hosted by +Mariette DiChristina of +Scientific American to see the latest - and coolest - device for underwater exploration. To study the behavior of fishes and invertebrates that live in the oceans' depths, scientists need to observe and interact with these animals in their habitats. But how? Advanced techniques allow for diving to several hundred feet, but human physiology sets practical limits for the type of work and amount of time at that depth. The Exosuit, the newest generation of atmospheric diving systems (ADS), keeps the pilot protected from the effects of pressure and will allow a trained pilot to perform delicate work at depths of up to 1,000 feet (305 meters) for hours. Together with a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), the Exosuit will provide new ways for scientists to observe, photograph, and collect marine life in areas that are otherwise difficult to explore.Live from the +American Museum of Natural History, come join this Google Science Fair 2014 Hangout On Air to see the the only Exosuit currently in existence. Research examining interference effects shows that auditory input often interferes with processing of visual input in young children (i.e., auditory dominance effect), whereas visual input often interferes with auditory processing in adults (i.e., visual dominance effect). The current study used a cross-modal statistical learning task to examine modality dominance in adults. Participants ably learned auditory and visual statistics when auditory and visual sequences were presented unimodally and when auditory and visual sequences were correlated during training. However, increasing task demands resulted in an important asymmetry: Increased task demands attenuated visual statistical learning, while having no effect on auditory statistical learning. These findings are consistent with auditory dominance effects reported in young children and have important implications for our understanding of how sensory modalities interact while learning the structure of cross-modal informationScience on Google+ Posterside Hangouts #12013-08-13 02:30:0099G+

Future of StoryTelling561,546You sense tension every day. Real life experience—from politics, to academia, to kitchen debates—reminds us how difficult it is to genuinely change someone's mind. Jarvis is somehow pulling Klue towards him, and he intends to make her his pawn. This will happen on March 2nd at 4:00PM at the William Wallace Monument near Stirling, Scotland.Jarvis intends to capture her essence by trapping the monument in an Enlightened field, and controlling the majority of the portals nearby. I normally don't take sides, but I know I want to help Klue. Hubble Space Telescope2,788,392A new, improved portrait of Hubble’s deepest-ever view of the universe, called the eXtreme Deep Field, or XDF, looks far away and back in time to reveal faint galaxies at one ten-billionth the brightness of what the human eye can see.  This is the culmination of 10 years of observing a patch of sky that contains thousands of far-flung galaxies. The full-color XDF image shows previously unseen galaxies as they looked in the early universe, billions of years ago.Astronomers continue studying this area of sky with Hubble. Extensive ongoing observing programs, led by Harry Teplitz and Richard Ellis at the California Institute of Technology, will allow astronomers to study the deep-field galaxies with Hubble to even greater depths in ultraviolet and infrared light prior to the launch of JWST. These new results will provide even more extraordinary views of this region of the sky and will be shared with the public in the coming months.                              Want to know more? You can participate in an online webinar and hear three key astronomers of the XDF observing team describe how they assembled the landmark observation. They will illustrate and explain what Hubble’s powerful new view tells us about the evolving universe. Viewers can send in questions for our panel of experts to discuss. The webinar will be broadcast at 1 p.m. Thursday Sept 27. Join us here for this Google Event, or watch and leave questions at the HubbleSite YouTube Channel. (http://www.youtube.com/hubblesitechannel). You can also ask your questions in advance here in comments, and we'll pass them on to our panel. The panelists will be:Garth Illingworth, astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz.He is the principal investigator of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field 2009 (HUDF09) Project. Pascal Oesch, astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz.He is a co-investigator with the HUDF09 Project. Dan Magee, programmer/data analyst at the University of California, Santa Cruz. NASA1,421,272Fifty years ago, President John Kennedy challenged us to go to the moon within the decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard. As we remember Neil Armstrong this week – the man who, with a single step realized the hopes of a president, this nation and the world – we are recognizing the extraordinary achievements of the past five decades achieved by our nation's space agency and where the passion to explore will lead us in the future. President Barack Obama has set NASA on course toward an asteroid and to send humans to Mars within the next two decades. This goal is not without notable challenges, but using the knowledge, expertise and American ingenuity that has been the trademark of NASA scientists and engineers for the last half-century, NASA continues to make possible that which is seemingly impossible. At 3:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 12, NASA astronauts, scientists and engineers will hold a Google+ Hangout to talk about NASA's rich history of innovation and ingenuity and talk about NASA's future goals for scientific discovery and human spaceflight.During the event, we'll be joined by:- Dan Dumbacher, Deputy Associate Administrator for Exploration Systems Development in NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. He is the former Director of Engineering at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Previously, he was the deputy director of safety and mission assurance at Marshall.- Ron Garan, astronaut who lived and worked aboard the International Space Station. He has been in space for 178 days and has conducted four spacewalks.- John Grunsfeld, Associate Administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. He is an astronaut and researcher in high energy astrophysics, cosmic ray physics, and in the emerging field of exoplanet studies. He was also the deputy director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, managing the science program for the Hubble Space Telescope and the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope.- Michael Lopez-Alegria, the President of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation. He is a former Naval Aviator and test pilot (Capt., U.S. Navy, Ret.), NASA astronaut and International Space Station (ISS) commander. To join the event, visit http://plus.google.com/+NASA at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Ask your questions of the group in the comments below or using hashtag #askNASA :50 Years Later: NASA Discusses Using Innovation and Ingenuity to do Big Things2012-09-12 21:00:00652G+

Stats: Men Using OkCupid Tend to Exaggerate Height

I'm taking an online refresher course on statistics for fun and came across this question (see image below). I took a wild guess at the answer, and it turns out I was right! :P

----------

Men's false claims of augmented physical traits likely stemmed from self-reported bias. This bias was reinforced by overcompensation for insecurity due to childhood abandonment and psychological inferiority due to frequent reprimands for chronic under-performance secondary to poor parenting and an inflexible faulty educational system. Constant ridicule and unchecked bullying from oppositionally defiant and treacherous childhood peers also contributed to self-deceit as a mechanism to cope with perceived inadequate stature, a byproduct of years of intense sociopsychological power struggles and competition.

Flying with Jetman

Swiss aviator and inventor Yves Rossy is the only the person in history to fly with a jet-propelled wing. He is a former military and commercial airline pilot who spent over 10 years developing and testing 15 prototypes prior to the most recent rigid carbon-fiber version with 4 jet turbines.

Jetman has made historic flights over the Swiss Alps, English Channel, and Grand Canyon with speeds up to 190 mph. Here's an amazing sight of him flying in formation with L-39 Albatross fighter jets of the Swiss aerobatic Breitling jet team:  Jetman Yves Rossy flies with the Breitling Jet Team over the Grand Canyon

Below is Rossy's TEDtalk from 2011.

The SEATEST mission is also an opportunity to test new technologies for future use in space. Just-in-time training delivered through head-up displays can significantly decrease crew training time and optimise work efficiency onboard the International Space Station and improved exercise devices can improve astronaut health.

L-439: Logbook

I have picked up ATV training with crewmate Sasha today.

One of the classes dealt with the operations related to ingressing ATV after docking. Sounds easy enough, but ingress operations actually take several hours.

For one thing, before opening any hatch you need to make sure that you have a good seal between Station and the vehicle itself. We call these type of procedures leak checks: you basically create a pressure differential between two volumes that are sealed off and check that the pressure equalization across the seal over a certain time is within the limits.

Once the leak check is passed and you open the hatch, it's time to take a long series of air samples, part for return to ground and part to test onboard for different contaminants.

Then you need to install an air filter and let it fully clean the ATV atmosphere for... more »

The Shape of the Universe
For Earthlings 101

+Brian Koberlein described how the universe could be flat and finite in volume, but without an edge:
https://plus.google.com/100479352836033641546/posts/f8och6TGB6Q

The alien Zogg from Betelgeuse explores these concepts further in a simple and entertaining animation with great visualizations.

He (it?) distinguishes between topology and geometry and shows several models that could fit the flat, finite, faux edge form :)

Lead in Lipstick: The Whole Picture
An Example Analysis Emphasizing Perspective and Context

The cluster of studies from 2007-2012 on lead in lipstick has been used as an example in some biostatistics classes to highlight how easy it is to misinterpret data. Reports by the media are sometimes misleading, but (to be fair) not necessarily erroneous or intentionally so because they are looking at real and true numbers, just not in the appropriate context. Delving deeper, we can take a look at individual study details to analyze to what degree a particular claim has merit.

Of note, this specific article presents conclusions in a mostly balanced and reasonable manner. In the recent past, there was an inaccurate portrayal of this specific topic in the news that got people riled up, and you can imagine it spurred unwarranted public fear. I'm linking to this article because... more »

Aggressive steering maneuvers like this will be an important part of landing the rocket precisely back at the launch site after reentering from space at hypersonic velocity.

Alcohol Intolerance and Toxicity
Hangover biochemistry, cancer risk, Asian woes, and TV shows

There are several enzymes involved in helping our bodies detox from alcohol. These enzymes and/or subsequent breakdown products are responsible for many of the common occurrences we experientially associate with it.

Break It Down

The liver enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) helps metabolize ethanol (EtOH -- the type of alcohol for consumption) to acetaldehyde, which in turn is metabolized by acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) into a less harmful compound, acetic acid (vinegar).

EtOH →(via ADH)→ acetaldehyde →(via ALDH)→ acetic acid

Of course, there are other enzymes that contribute as well, such as the cytochrome P450 system that oxidizes organic molecules and multiple diverse substrates.

The Great Dying

Evidence of multiple extinction events throughout the history of the Earth can be found, but all evidence points to the Permian-Triassic extinction event as being the most severe. This event, nicknamed the Great Dying, eliminated over 90% of all marine species and at least 70% of terrestrial species 251.4 million years ago. Nothing was spared as everything, from trees, to insects, to microbes, were nearly wiped out. The cause is still in debate from volcanic activity, to the formation of Pangea, to a supernova, to a combination of other various events.

One of the biggest factors in the mass extinction of marine species was a mass oceanic anoxia event. This deficiency in oxygen (anoxia) and increase in sulfidic waters (euxinia) lasted up to 8 million years, with the most severe being the first 3 million years. An extreme global warming... more »

New Review Paper in Science This Week

Chris Field and I have a new Review paper in the journal Science this week. The Review is part of a Special Section on Natural Systems in Changing Climates. Our review is focused on changes in climate conditions that are known to have impacts on terrestrial ecosystems. We also review sources of inertia and uncertainty in climate change over the coming decades. The image (from Figure 1 in the Review) shows the change in annual temperature projected for the late-21st-century using 27 global climate models developed by research centers around the world, using a scenario for the 21st century that has been similar to the emissions of the last decade.

The Gecko Adhesive System: Amazing Sticky Feet

Geckos can climb all sorts of surfaces and even hang from a vertical sheet of glass using one toe. The "stickiness" of their feet is not attributed to secretions or suction, but rather van der Waals forces.

These small-scale intermolecular forces are ubiquitous and are caused by dipoles, which are due to unbalanced distributions of electron charges around atoms or molecules.

This mechanism was determined by Dr. Kellar Autumn's Gecko Team in 2002.

Can your eyes tell the difference between Ultra & Full HDTV?

Someone asked the question above, and the answer is, it depends :) Generally yes, but when would you be able to detect a significant difference?

Whether or not you can distinguish between individual pixels on the screen depends on viewing distance and size of the display.

Visual acuity of 20/20 means at 20 feet away, you can clearly see separate lines printed 1.75mm apart, which subtend to 1 arcminute of "angular size" at your eye [1] (an arcminute is 1/60th of a degree). You can calculate how close you would need to be to actually detect certain specified distances on a TV.

If you have an 84" TV like the image below [2], the height of the viewing area of that TV with an aspect ratio of 16:9 is sine(arctangent(9/16)) * 84 = approximately 41 inches tall. Since 4k Ultra HD TV... more »

Advances in Mind Control and Robotic Telepresence
Quadcopter Navigation Using Thoughts

Biomedical engineering professor Bin He and his research students at the University of Minnesota have constructed a non-invasive 3D brain-computer interface (a 64-electrode EEG cap) to allow human thought to navigate a flying robot, making it turn, rise, dip, and even sail through a ring.

In the future, they hope to extend this functionality to controlling artificial limbs, wheelchairs, and other devices, particularly for those with impaired physical mobility or neurodegenerative diseases.

(Or, you know, if the need to control A Swarm of Nano Quadrotors or an army of robots ever arises.)

Elon Musk Throws Us For a Loop, Yet Again. (Perhaps Literally.)

Along with Elon Musk's recent announcement to expand the Tesla Supercharger network, he dropped a vague hint about his next potentially revolutionary transportation project called a "Hyperloop", which he described as "a cross between a Concorde, a rail gun, and an air hockey table". Presumably, it could send people from L.A. to S.F. in 30 minutes.

The Business Insider article below speculates it could be a version of a Very High Speed Transit system using electromagnetically levitated vehicles traveling through sealed underground vacuum tunnels.

I actually think it could more likely be a version of the Launch Loop concept, which also more appropriately reflects the naming convention of a Hyperloop. But who really knows?

I'm assuming the discussion will focus on where we are now and what the U.S. could do to identify and track more asteroids, as well as the upcoming possibilities to literally use them as stepping stones to eventually support deeper space exploration.

Obviously, we are at a severe disadvantage if we don't know where those asteroids are. Some organizations say generating solutions to mitigate hazardous near-Earth objects is not as great of an immediate hurdle as the need to establish a more complete tracking database. Tiwanaku, or Tiahuanaco in Spanish, is a pre-Columbian archaeological site in Bolivia on the southeast shores of Lake Titicaca in the Andes over 12,500 feet above sea level.

The first written record in history of the ancient city was by Spanish conquistador Pedro Cieza de León in 1549. Astro-archaeologists believe Tiwanaku may have been inhabited as early as 1500 BC.

One of the most famous structures on site is a megalithic portal called Puerta del Sol (Gate of the Sun). It is 10 feet tall, 13 feet wide, weighs approximately 10 tons, and was constructed from a single piece of stone.

The lintel contains characters in the form of winged effigies with human faces or condor's heads surrounding a central figure. The main figure is holding staffs symbolizing rays of light.

Processing Data from the Large Hadron Collider

The LHC produces 600 million collisions every second in each detector generating 1 petabyte of data per second. After drastic data reduction measures down to 100 GB/s, tens of thousands of processors select out 1 in 100 of the remaining events.

The info is then collected in the CERN Data Center, reconstructed, and archived. Copies are sent to large-scale data centers involving hundreds of thousands of computers distributed around the world.

A network of more than 170 collaborating centers in 36 countries form the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG). Each day, WLCG processes more data than a corresponding single computer running for 600 years.

Monument to the Battle of the Nations

Völkerschlachtdenkmal is a monument to the 1813 Battle of Leipzig in Germany. It commemorates the coalition armies of Russia, Prussia, Austria, and Sweden defeating the French army of Napoleon.

The structure is 91 meters tall and one of the tallest monuments in Europe. The first level contains a crypt surrounded by eight large statues of fallen warriors next to smaller statues called the Totenwächter (Guards of the Dead). The second level, Ruhmeshalle (Hall of Fame), features four statues each 10 meters tall. They represent the four legendary historic qualities ascribed to the German people: bravery, faith, sacrifice, and fertility.

The main figure on the front of the memorial represents Archangel Michael, considered by some to be the "War God of Germans".
