This is a nicely written article about how to go from a "high concept" idea for a story, to an actual story with all the necessary story-bits. It's engagingly told, but the TL;DR crowd will appreciate this punchline:
"Make sure your idea is fleshed out into a series of events, which include some twists and some rising action. Make sure you're picking a main character who brings some juiceboxes to the party. And ensure they have their own agenda. And try to hang onto why this particular idea grabbed hold of you. And then you'll be in business!"

The Force Unleashed 2 has a surprisingly good replay value. It took a while before I picked it back up, and it's not a very long play-through, but I found it quite satisfying nevertheless. Some things I remembered; others were just as unexpected as the first time I played it. I did better, naturally, and figured things out much faster than last time, but the core experience of the play-through was largely unchanged.
The mark of a well-made game is that it can be just as much fun the second time through. This one meets that standard, at least for me.

I post about many things. Science. Writing. Geekery. Mostly fun stuff, occasionally serious stuff, and sometimes completely random stuff. And for some reason, a lot of you seem to enjoy it.
But really, I'm here because I want to help people. It's why I went into science, and why I want to engage people here. I believe that helping others improves the world and improves me, too. A rising tide lifts all ships, including my own.
Do you need help? Don't be afraid to ask. I can't do everything, and sometimes I can't do anything but listen - but I might be able to do something, or know someone who can. I know my limits, but there's a lot of us here. If I can't help, maybe someone else here can. We can ask together.

I may not be a mother, but that doesn't mean I can't celebrate Mothers Day - or any other holiday - with just as much joy and happiness as anyone else. It doesn't matter if my mother was great or not (she was outstanding). It doesn't matter if I myself am not a mother (I'm not capable). It's not about me. It's about celebrating other people - people who have undertaken incredible things, and made an amazing difference because of it. And that is something we can and should all get behind.

As the New Moon continues this season's celestial shadow play, an annular solar eclipse track begins in western Australia at 22:30 UT on May 9 -- near sunrise on May 10 local time. Because the eclipse occurs within a few days of lunar apogee, the Moon's silhouette does not quite cover the Sun during mid-eclipse, momentarily creating a spectacular ring of fire. While a larger region witnesses a partial eclipse, the annular mid-eclipse phase is visible along a shadow track only about 200 kilometers wide but 13,000 kilometers long, extending across the central Pacific. You might think this detective gig is easy. Set your own hours. Take the cases you want, laugh off the rest. Do a little sleuthing, shadow a deadbeat, collect a thick wad of cash and drink martinis at the bar all night, right?
Wrong. Not even close. The deadbeats are the ones hiring you. Your job is to find out what they really want, and then try to make sure you have the goods on your employer so after you solve the case, they can't stiff you. And don't get me started on the cases - you'll be chased, threatened, roughed up, maybe even used for target practice. And at the end of the day you'll be lucky to have enough cash for the cab fare home to your naked-bulb garret.
Being a detective is rough. So take a lesson from me. Stick with something nicer to do for a living. Like cleaning toilets. Or... more »
