chasejarvisTECH: How To Build a Pro Cine-Boom on a Shoestring [literally]

http://bit.ly/10J3xnp

In my last chasejarvisTECH piece you got a peek at the gear I packed away for the 19,000 foot climb up Kilimanjaro for the Summit on the Summit. There were more than a few comments on how much “stuff” went with me. It’s all relative I suppose, but when you get down to it that was a fairly bare-bone operation for a job that still yielded high-end results.

As you see in this next installment, we had to make do without some of the other gear that we would have loved to have had along the way but left out for obvious reasons. I’m talking about cranes, jibs, dollies and the like. So sometimes you have to get creative.

My man Chris did just that, by lashing some cordelette climbing rope to a tripod to create a makeshift cinema boom. As the footage at the endproves,... more »

Rock Climbing Basics - Some semi-recent work

Hey Folks, thought I would share some of a project that went down last year. This all went live a while ago, but I was drowning in some other projects and hardly even noticed. So I'm sharing it now!

This is a How To video series that I worked on with Climbing Magazine. It was a really fun project to work on, because not only did it represent a big area of growths for myself as a shooter, which is getting much more serious about video production; but it also represented a similar area of exploration and growth in the publishing industry as a whole. In this modern world of social media, web content and digital iPad editions, everyone is figuring out how they can use these new platforms to bring multimedia and video content to their readers. It was really interesting and enjoyable being a part of this endeavor!

Learn yourself some shortcuts – Never stop learning!

Along with my much needed upgrade to CS6, I'm also spending some time in the next few weeks digging into some tutorials, blogs, Lynda.com and other educational resources to see what new techniques and approaches I can add to my workflow. There's always room for more knowledge and improvement, and every step you take boosts your images a little bit higher.

I thought I would start things off with one of my favorite "tutorials" of all time. Here's more tips than you can shake a stick at, delivered hilariously by the one and only Deke McClelland.

Enjoy!

Wow!  +Vic Gundotra just knocked it out of the park with his keynote!  Just when you thought photos on Google+ couldn't get any better he blew us all away!  I'm super excited about the new photography features.  In many ways I think this is a huge paradigm shift and game changer for the masses.  Everyone's photography will take a big step up, not just those of us with photo processing skills.  A rising tide lifts all boats and I LOVE that.  Did you see Vic's keynote?  What did you think?  Here's my blog post on it here.

Wet Rock

If you ever want to experience the High Wire crag in Clear Creek Canyon without the crowds, you have to go in the morning, on a tuesday. When it's raining.

Even so, there were still two other parties in the area. Here's Scott Turpin getting after some wet schist on Via Comatose Amigo (5.10b).

Later on, I'm going to go to the grocery store and inform them that I would love to use their groceries without paying, but would be thrilled to give them a grocery store credit on the bottom of our plates, so that people who look really hard will know where the food came from.

Rocky Mountain Pow

Had a great day skiing up in Rocky Mountain National Park with my friend Andrew Commander, who is a really great telemark skier. The backcountry being the powder keg that it is right now, we mostly just skinned up to Loch Vale and skied the drainage back down. But we still managed to find a few safe pillows to drop.

Along comes another game changer...

The word s "Game Changer" seems to pop up in the filmmaking world pretty often these day; and not because it's being overused, but because that's the rate at which things are advancing.

This tool looks amazing. And +Vincent Laforet does an excellent job at showing us just a taste of what it can do. The final cab shot is truly mind blowing.

Exciting time to be a film maker!

Super excited and honored to find out that Backpacker Magazine's 2012 Survival Issue has been nominated for a National Magazine Award in the category of Single Topic Issue by the American Society of Magazine Editors.

This was probably my favorite issue of the year to work on, and it's fun to see it get recognition from ASME. It's humbling to even be nominated, winning would be unreal.

We're up against some pretty big guns, so wish us luck!

Ice Climbing at Lincoln Falls

Had a great time getting out for some midweek ice with Genny last week. My friend Scott came along, as to continue flooding my catalog with himself crushing. Here he is on the upper headwall of the Scottish Gully at Lincoln Falls.

Always nice when you can get out with friends, climb a few pitches, and pull a photoshoot out of it.

Op-Ed: Letter to Cheney and Bush from dying Iraq vet on 10th anniversary
http://www.digitaljournal.com/

On the 10th anniversary of the Iraq War, a veteran of that war wrote a letter to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. It is a letter that all Americans should read.

Tomas Young wrote the letter on behalf of the 4,488 soldiers and Marines who died in the Iraq War, and on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of veterans who were wounded, both physically and psychologically, by the Iraq War. On behalf of those whose lives were either taken, or destroyed beyond repair.

Young is living under hospice care and has little time left to live but he wanted Bush and Cheney, as well as all other Americans, to read his words.

Young signed up for his tour of duty just two days after the 9/11 attacks. He joined the army because his... more »

Mondays are for getting rad.

That's the new slogan that was hatched while skiing with Scott yesterday. Here he is getting rad last monday on Berthoud Pass. He's in school to be a kick-ass Chinese medicine practitioner and has mondays off. And for me, trying to be an adventure photographer and have a family is no easy balance. Time and time again, I've found that you end up having time for everything except the reason it all began, getting out there and being stoked. So from now on, Tuesday to Friday is for working, weekend are for family; but mondays?

Mondays are for getting rad.

Powder Day on Berthoud Pass!

Yesterday I went out with my friends Scott and Finn to take the maiden voyage on my new (and first ever) pair of skis! I've been lucky enough to get away with demoing and sampling stuff for the last two years. But I'm getting pretty addicted, and thought it was time to have something of my own.

What a day it was! Knee deep powder all day long, skiing with two good friend who are way better than me. This is Finn, he's a total crusher on Tele's.

Yay, skiing!!!

This is pretty fantastic. You never realize how much of a musical, aesthetic, font and editing style certain time periods had until you see someone make parody of it!

In announcing his decision to not grant permission for the Keystone pipeline extension, opponents of President Obama argue the president gave in to pressure from environmental activists.
In reality, the president was resisting an artificial deadline from Republicans trying to force his hand.
But the fact is, for the good of our country and our economy, rejecting the Keystone XL deal was the best decision possible.

Here are six facts about the proposed Keystone XL deal that make clear why the pipeline was a bad deal for America and why it deserved to be rejected:

1. Keystone XL Would Not Reduce Foreign Oil Dependency
