Social Media Today144,625*Does Social Business Make Sense?* _Not just for people but for the organizations as well?_ *Social Business is the focus of every business owner and CEO.* As we transition to a world of people, connections and relationships where advertising and traditional marketing do not work like they used to, the trend is to reposition a business to work harder for its employees, better with its customers and for its community. When the traditional model of a business gives us some very strong, clearly defined guidelines, driven by the irrefutable logic of the balance sheet, *does it make much sense to really talk about social business?* Is it a distraction? *And if not, can there be a workable path that can transition a legacy business to a modern, social one?* Discussing some of the key questions will be TEDx speaker and author @105103058358743760661. *A former Microsoft executive and a thought leader in the field of technology, people and organizations,* Gideon will be sharing some of his insights with us. Hosting the discussion will be @115620878851836664537  with @102000982871890720967  and at the controller's helm, making sure that everything runs smoothly will be @100470926227322431614 with @115000108263064481690. *Don't forget to join the conversation!* We want your questions, highlights, and feedback prior to, during, and after the event so make sure to tweet @socialmedia2day using the hashtag #SMTPowerTalk  or leave us comments on the Google+ or YouTube event pages! ISOOSI Research Engine3,475*Roles and Stories in Effective Marketing* with Dr. Mani Saint-Victor ( @118176779352783168766 ) and @107656088609554509650  In our last show we discussed how words shape brands, both to those within, and without the company.  Building from that understanding of words, tone, voice, this week we go to the *Customer's story* and how we find and play our role in that story. Its fine to define ourselves to ourselves, in a fixed context of simply describing who we are, what our mission is, and similar things... But how does that matter to the potential customer who is wrapped up in their own problems right now?  How do we present ourselves in relation to a specific issue and mindset without losing any of that true definition of ourselves. In this episode we'll revise the importance of 'story', but from the perspective of the customer's story rather than our own.  We'll discuss how we fit ourselves into a vital and needed role in that story, and how to play that role effectively, powerfully, believable, and above all, truthfully. *Links* G+ Hangout Event: http://isoo.si/Ab23D Watch on YouTube: http://isoo.si/t3B2S Main Comment stream: http://isoo.si/Ab23D Related recommended reading: http://isoo.si/q5FWn Join our wonderful guests @118176779352783168766 and @107656088609554509650, the   #isoosichat   regulars @113426828273677356184, @106515636986325493284 and @116843668885160648294 for this discussion.Roles and Stories in Effective Marketing2014-07-01 21:00:0074
SEOWiSE943*The Paradigm Shift* _The Business of Communicating in a Semantic Web_ *New:* We're trying to track activity so if you share this event anywhere else please add #paradigmshift ! I am thrilled to announce my newest show with @115620878851836664537. Through our interactions on his brilliant @110793088683846123648, David and I have developed clear connections between communication concepts I regularly use in Communication Studies and the new Semantic Web that businesses are learning to function in. *The show break down* _In a half hour David and I will..._ I will briefly explain a communication concept. For our first show we are starting really basic. *I will explain the two-step flow of communication:* Its history, the basic model and components within that model, and how we generally study it within communication. David will then take the concept of the two-step flow of communication and apply it to his expertise: Business today. *David will explain how the two-step flow of communication functions within the semantic web and why its important for businesses to consider.* Finally, we will address any questions that you all raise for us, so bring your thinking caps! A big thank you to @115091224082668507135 for the banner! The Paradigm Shift - The Business of Communicating in a Semantic Web2014-06-19 18:00:0089

Meloney Hall3,378Teacher Says, “ Okay, class --  you better take notes for this lesson.” Fifteen students take notes vigorously as they try to keep up with writing cursive on their lined notebook paper. Eight Students do not take any notes at all.  They might ask for someone’s notes later. One Student draws doodles as a form of note-taking.  She gets laughed at and told to “grow-up” and take notes the right way.  I’m kind of embarrassed I listened to those peers; I need to gain those skills again!  So much easier to retain the information when you can draw pictures with your written notes (printed, not cursive).  How about the Digital Way of taking notes today?  That’s what +113865527017476906160  will be showing us during the HOA broadcast with me.  I will be interviewing Sacha Chua on Wednesday, March 12th at 6:00pm ET / 3:00pm PT about how she uses SketchNotes for taking notes in a digital format.  Free-flow handwriting and techy all at the same time!  She’s a woman in science and technology, so she really loves gadgets!    She uses SketchNotes, and it’s really very fascinating!  Watching her do them LIVE is really the best!  I know Sacha as a fellow HelpOuts Provider, and I have seen her do this for many HOA’s.  This is why I wanted to interview her --  you’ll say WOW like I did when I first learned about her and what she does.    This is a link to give you the basic idea of what the system is and why it is so handy for students, business people, and anyone else who needs to retain information.  And if you’re into saving paper, then this is a true match for you!  I like to think of SketchNotes as a digital white board.  http://www.core77.com/blog/sketchnotes/sketchnotes_101_the_basics_of_visual_note-taking_19678.asp Select YES or MAYBE to get a reminder on your calendar.  It will also help mark the spot if you can’t watch live, but will want to watch the replay.  You’re in for a techy-treat!  Hope you’ll be watching! Visual Note-Taking with Sacha Chua2014-03-12 23:00:0034

Jess + Scott + You327We are just people, and just mere mortals at that. So, how can “we” [in this case meaning you and I] change the world?  Peek at Google. Ya, you heard right. Google!  They research and develop (R&D) innovations online and off, in the medical field, in commerce, in transportation, robotics, learning, life’s longevity and more. Much more. They [in this case meaning Googlers or employees] feel the risk is worth the reward and the falling down means learning up. For them, *learning is what helps fuel opportunity which in turn leads to growth and sustainability.* So how different are We-from-They or Us-from-Them? On this Jess and Scott agree: *It’s not the scale that counts so much as how you feel about it and then act on how you feel.*  Here’s the kicker. In descending order: technology, the internet, social media and Google/G+ can now easily and effortless transfer into our hands the ability to explore our curiosity along with all the innovation and opportunity inherent in the technology. Now, how cool is that? *So, do you see that going forward it’s YOU? We decide next steps and decide Is the risk worth the reward, and are we willing to fall and learn to grow?* This week’s JSY! show serves up case studies drawn from a courageous group demanding change to make our point: Even though our R&D budgets are a smidge smaller than say, Google’s, it’s the culture we set in motion for ourselves and our family, work and country that can make an impact. Might even save the world. In the end, it is the *you and I* that chooses to jump (or not), expand (or not) and grow (or not). For small businesses and entrepreneurs this means providing new and different value for our customers. Join @110746124112827812577 @109237790792840071389  and @106867567997804136918    as we explore innovation to create opportunity which can lead to real change. Mere mortals? We think not. *YOU* (the Y in JSY) take action that matters. Jim Shankle1,620It's always a pleasure hearing +David Amerland discuss _*"The GSS/G+ Connection"*_ because it's a subject area with many facets. For mobile viewers click on this YouTube Link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S76tXQ5qZ30  The time for the Event is translated to your local time zone. As a reference, it starts at 7:30 PM ET. _Google Semantic Search_ and its direct connection to, and support by, Google+ (what I am starting to call _"The GSS/G+ Connection"_) is remarkably deep and important. Yet David explains it with such simplicity, ease, and freshness that it's very understandable and enjoyable no matter your level of experience. Unquestionably, there is a wealth of material in this subject matter which means David will never be over-exposed or fail to peel back yet another layer of this *very large* onion every time he appears in an HOA. Thursday night he is joining my _MBA Marketing Strategies_ class at John Brown University (Rogers Center in Northwest Arkansas) via Google Hangouts On Air. David will explain _The GSS/G+ Connection_ from an MBA's and marketer's perspective. He will also introduce some unique "life applications" that should be pursued as an extension of the emerging power of GSS and Google+. Our session will start at 6:30 PM CST for those interested in seeing Marketing Strategies examined from David's unique perspective. *Two facts backing my conclusion that David has struck a deep vein...* 1) He had 22,000 Followers when I started communicating with him 5-6 weeks ago. Today his Followers number over 150,000, and 2) His game-changing book _Google Semantic Search_ - 230 pages (including an extensive Bibliography for those who want to explore the subject even further) that mines (as David calls it) a "semantically dense" subject. Proof that GSS/G+ is a critically important subject for MBA students (everyone really) was on display last week. Friday for an enjoyable and fast-paced hour, David, +Mark Traphagen  +Ronnie Bincer   (aka "The Hangout Helper") and +martin shervington  discussed how Google+ is changing behavior on the internet - to the better - https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c0n7nndld5gebbjat1of0dhb124  Even after a full hour, there were many unaddressed questions - reflecting that the session could have continued for the rest of the day. Based on the enjoyable chemistry of these four professionals, most their large audience probably would not have left them had it continued. Come join us Thursday night to continue the discussion. #mktgmba  MBA Marketing Strategies - David Amerland Explores "The GSS/G+ Connection" at John Brown University2013-11-08 01:30:0064

Yifat Cohen72,756*Do you feel like a good parent when you give your child juice for lunch instead of french fries?* I would. *And I would be wrong.* If you're like me, you're probably going through the same parent's dilemma as I am - *how do I keep my child healthy while allowing him to enjoy all the goods out there?* This is such a big thing for me that my step son has named me a healthologist (there's more to it, join the Hangout to get the whole story - it's worth it). *Quality - Quantity - Timing* My daily struggle with what to put in my child's mouth so that he has a healthy diet is shared with many parents, I'm sure. What to put in his lunch box other than peanut butter and jelly? What's for dinner? (my daily nightmare) Did he have enough protein today? Did he eat fruits? He had a cup of juice, does that count as one serving? What about dessert - can he have some? Should it be home made? Sugar or not..? Mick Fealty13,632All across the world, systems are crashing. In banking we've seen debt slicing and long haul internal systems like that of RBS/NatWest/Ulster Bank literally falling apart. In Europe post war notions of solidarity are being stretched to bursting as sovereign nations argue over the degree to which fiscal sovereignty can be shared.   Further afield the Arab nations continue in popular tumult after several generations of acquiescence under varying degrees of autocracy. Yet like Greece, Spain and Portugal to the north - each just one or two generations ahead - the Arab world is finding that democracy does not come in a shiny, ready wrapped box. Even in more settled democracies, once venerable institutions are finding huge problems keeping up with the speed at which their citizens can communicate, not through them but around them.   Why not join our panel this Friday for #DigitalLunch  at the usual time, where we will attempt to serve starters about 1pm and finish before the hour is out? #DigitalLunch: Crashing systems2012-09-28 14:00:007

Sakari Maaranen3,848Here's a circle that's about Life on Earth. Add these people and organizations for everything about the #environment , #biodiversity , and the kind of #values  that can bring sustainable development. This is a broad range of people, many of whom are not necessarily activists, but scientists and experts with generally the right kind of mindset and deep knowledge of these and related issues. Some are thinkers, artists, or younger people with similar interests.Shared because we need more this kind of thinking! Feel free to re-share —  #sustainability  deserves all our attention and is needed right now.Let's make 2015 the year of positive change!Oh, and please let me know, if I'm missing some active people or important organizations. Remember that I don't care about status. It doesn't matter if you are someone new or young or already a superstar, or if your main field is something else. All it takes is some genuine drive to engage and/or follow these topics. So don't be shy! You are as welcome as anyone.2015-01-03 23:20:49115200

Driving a Silver Stake
Into The Heart of The World's Dumbest Idea
#shareholdervalue

We're getting closer and closer to the day when only the dumbest CEOs in the world, continue to practice the world's dumbest idea.
Well, we're already there, and the market will continue to sort this out.

I'll tell you what these CEOs are good at: Bamboozling the shareholder.
Granted, if we scratch this a bit deeper still, we would see that the CEO, and an inner circle of stock holders make off like bandits, while the shareholder gets screwed. Caveat emptor, and all that.

The Downfall of Eliticism
The Rise (and Fall?) of Google

Good catch here from +Walter H Groth .

Google, of course, isn't going to collapse tomorrow. But in the long haul, I don't think their culture is going to help them weather the inevitable storms that every company large or small has to endure.

Google's Elitist Problem And Why Apple Avoids Rocket Scientists
by Eric Jackson - Forbes
#recruiting

Google’s policy of hiring “only the best” leads to it being filled with elites. And, not surprisingly, elites tend to be elitist.  This tends to lead to close-mindedness. It also tends to lead to overconfidence and hubris.  And this overconfidence can lead to a multitude of problems, from not seeing some external threat coming or turning off people around you by telling them all the time how brilliant you are.

Apple’s non-elites, by contrast, tend to be smart but humble. They tend to be better listeners than elites. They tend to doubt themselves more.  And their unusual career backgrounds tend to look at the world a little more creatively than if they followed the prep school, Ivy League, Rhodes Scholar, McKinsey, Google track.

Glia
The Future of Organization
#Glia

The future of organization is the future of people. This was my mantra five years ago when I embarked on my venture, it's still my mantra now.
But to realize this massive potential, we need a new organizational operating system and platforms.
Glia is that OS and platform. I just need to be courageous enough to find those business pioneers who will build this together and lead the revolution in organization and business.

There are trillions of dollars to be made in raising the value of people, which are, perhaps, our world’s most under-utilized resource.

The Future of...
Distributed Autonomous Organization
#thefutureisnow

I'm not quite ready to render an opinion yet, but indications are this could be the future of the ethical organization.
+Gideon Rosenblatt has stretched my mind in this direction, and what we really have to consider here is the artificial intelligence of such an organization. Meaning, if we program the Distributed Autonomous Organization to act in an ethical manner (and other coded desirable behaviours), it won't waver, whereas humans, on the other hand, have a sketchy track record.

Via +Daniel Estrada

How computers can take over the world

How can computers get legal rights like people?  It sounds hard.  But in the US, it's not.  They just need to become corporations.

You see, in the US, corporations are already persons in the legal sense, with the right to sign contracts and sue people.  In 2010, the Supreme Court said they have the right to free speech!   Since corporations are very powerful, they are likely to gain more and more rights - and not just in the US.

So, computers might take over the world by becoming corporations... or running corporations.

Most people think computers need to be intelligent before they take over the world.  But maybe it will go the other way.  First they become corporations.  Then they hire us to make them more intelligent.

Now there's a company that's trying to speed up this process!  It's called Ethereum.   They want to help developers start Distributed Autonomous Corporations: corporations run by computers.

Vitalik Buterin, who runs Ethereum, explained the basic idea:

Corporations, US presidential candidate Mitt Romney reminds us, are people. Whether or not you agree with the conclusions that his partisans draw from that claim, the statement certainly carries a large amount of truth. What is a corporation, after all, but a certain group of people working together under a set of specific rules? When a corporation owns property, what that really means is that there is a legal contract stating that the property can only be used for certain purposes under the control of those people who are currently its board of directors – a designation itself modifiable by a particular set of shareholder. If a corporation does something, it’s because its board of directors has agreed that it should be done. If a corporation hires employees, it means that the employees are agreeing to provide services to the corporation’s customers under a particular set of rules, particularly involving payment. When a corporation has limited liability, it means that specific people have been granted extra privileges to act with reduced fear of legal prosecution by the government – a group of people with more rights than ordinary people acting alone, but ultimately people nonetheless. In any case, it’s nothing more than people and contracts all the way down.

However, here a very interesting question arises: do we really need the people? On the one hand, the answer is yes: although in some post-Singularity future machines will be able to survive all on their own, for the foreseeable future some kind of human action will simply be necessary to interact with the physical world. On the other hand, however, over the past two hundred years the answer has been increasingly no. The industrial revolution allowed us, for the first time, to start replacing human labor with machines on a large scale, and now we have advanced digitized factories and robotic arms that produce complex goods like automobiles all on their own. But this is only automating the bottom; removing the need for rank and file manual laborers, and replacing them with a smaller number of professionals to maintain the robots, while the management of the company remains untouched. The question is, can we approach the problem from the other direction: even if we still need human beings to perform certain specialized tasks, can we remove the management from the equation instead?

Most companies have some kind of mission statement; often it's about making money for shareholders; at other times, it includes some moral imperative to do with the particular product that they are creating, and other goals like helping communities sometimes enter the mix, at least in theory. Right now, that mission statement exists only insofar as the board of directors, and ultimately the shareholders, interpret it. But what if, with the power of modern information technology, we can encode the mission statement into code; that is, create an inviolable contract that generates revenue, pays people to perform some function, and finds hardware for itself to run on, all without any need for top-down human direction?

And then he went on to explain a plan to do this:

https://bitcoinmagazine.com/7050/bootstrapping-a-decentralized-autonomous-corporation-part-i/

https://bitcoinmagazine.com/7119/bootstrapping-an-autonomous-decentralized-corporation-part-2-interacting-with-the-world/

The leader's job is to ensure that the team has a compelling vision; to help everyone understand the strategy for realizing that vision; and to see that everyone is working together to implement the plan. When teams truly need to mesh, it doesn't matter whether you were once the world's best coder or salesperson or idea man. Your job is now facilitator. Behavior matters, says Mulally. What was allowed at Boeing and Ford: admitting problems and asking for help. What was not: texting in meetings, finger-pointing, putdowns, or anything else that interfered with a sense of shared effort. "Working together works," says Mulally. "*Smart people working together always works*."____

Uber’s emergence as a useful data repository no urban planners want to miss is in line with the broader ideology of solutionism espoused by Silicon Valley. Technology companies, having grabbed one of the most precious contemporary resources – data – now have the leverage over cash-strapped and unimaginative governments, pitching themselves as inevitable, benevolent saviours to the dull bureaucrats inside city administrations.

I know of plenty of Americans that know what it means, but they tend not to be blinded by the country's sense of exceptionalism, and this misguided notion that every other nation wants to be like them.

I say this as someone who has lived within a hours drive of its border, and as someone who has an immense admiration for many of the country's and its people great accomplishments.
But that doesn't mean it doesn't have blind spots, and a poor ability at self-evaluation.

Yes, the internet changed everything. But it's not as much as what did we gain, but what did we lose.

Don't get me wrong, I have benefited enormously from the knowledge that can be found and gained via the internet.
But it is getting harder for me to see what we are gaining, verses what we are losing by being swamped with fear, greed and stupidity.

"Shredding the myth of crowdsourcing" is unnecessarily link-baity, but what the hell. A very good look at what can go badly wrong with crowd sourcing.
Like every tool, it isn't for everything, and using it improperly can be dangerous.

Using the power of networks to solve complicated and complex challenges is enormously powerful, but they also need a lot of design and technology, and people willing to learn and engage into making swarms "smart", and keeping hackers and viruses at bay.

Well, we're already there, and the market will continue to sort this out.

Granted, if we scratch this a bit deeper still, we would see that the CEO, and an inner circle of stock holders make off like bandits, while the shareholder gets screwed. Caveat emptor, and all that.

“We want Zappos to function more like a city and less like a top-down bureaucratic organization,” Hsieh tells Quartz, saying that when cities double in size they become 15% more productive, but when companies double in size, productivity declines. “Look at companies that existed 50 years ago in the Fortune 500—most don’t exist today. Companies tend to die and cities don’t.”___

Jobs?
http://www.cepr.net/index.php/blogs/beat-the-press/257000-jobs-are-great-but-those-wall-street-boys-are-really-smart
There are many different measures that can be cited to make this point. The employment to population ratio for prime age workers (between the ages 25-54) is almost three full percentage points below its pre-recession level. (This gets around the claim that the problem is baby boomers retiring. These people are not leaving the labor force to retire.) The number of people who report working part-time involuntarily is still close to 2 million (@50 percent) above pre-recession levels.
It's not as rosy as you think. It's funny how when the Republicans tout jobs numbers, this is the sort of crisp analysis the Dems counter with, but when the Dems create jobs, their fanboys go silent and dumb on this analysis, and just become a parroting chorus instead. Hmmmm

Still not convinced? How about this McKinsey & Co report:
http://www.mckinsey.com/insights/strategy/the_strategic_yardstick_you_cant_afford_to_ignore
For example, we saw that the corporate world, like the world beyond it, has a relatively small number of elites and that, just as society grapples with the contemporary challenge of limited social mobility, many companies seem stuck in their strategic “class.” Escaping the gravity of the corporate middle class, indeed, requires businesses to expand or reinvent themselves unusually rapidly, often in the context of an industry whose overall performance is improving.

Facebook is bigger than people think they are

According to a report published by +Bitly http://tgcafe.it/1D5KV3O, the world’s leading link shortener, Facebook has largely solved the problem of so-called “dark social” links — those that have no referrer data and can’t be measured by web analytics tools — and as a result, the social network’s influence skyrocketed during the fourth quarter.

You can learn more about 'dark social' in this post on +The Atlantic http://tgcafe.it/1AB0VeL.

According to Bitly report, Facebook’s influence jumped 8.6 percent during the fourth quarter overall and 30.2 percent on mobile.

It's important to remember that it doesn’t mean Facebook’s influence actually grew that much — it means that clicks formerly attributed to “dark social” are now being correctly counted as Facebook’s clicks.

“Everybody knows Facebook is big, and everyone knows Facebook is driving a significant volume of traffic,” Bitly CEO Mark Josephson told +VentureBeat (http://tgcafe.it/1KodBrf).

“But in Q4, they solved a significant part of dark social — traffic or referrers that marketers or publishers don’t know where it’s coming from. …Facebook is bigger than people think they are.”

Amazon Just Admitted That It’s Losing Billions
by Timothy Green - Time.com / Money
#leadershipfail #integrity #investing

It turns out that Amazon isn’t some sort of magical cash machine, able to generate $2 billion of free cash flow while reporting far lower, or even negative, earnings, all the while investing heavily in capital-intensive businesses. Instead, it’s a company that’s borrowing billions of dollars in order to finance its growth, using lease accounting to make it appear profitable on a free cash flow basis. There’s nothing wrong with what Amazon is doing, but investors need to wise up to these sorts of accounting games.

Thoughts of the Day

This is a must read from my friend, +Tanveer Naseer .

Why today is not as bad we might think

“We hardly need to be reminded that we are living in an age of confusion. A lot of us have traded in our beliefs for bitterness and cynicism, or for a heavy package of despair, or even a quivering portion of hysteria. Opinions can be picked up cheap in the marketplace, while such commodities as courage and fortitude and faith are in alarmingly short supply. Around us all—now high like a distant thunderhead, now close upon us with the wet choking intimacy of a London fog—there is an enveloping cloud of fear.

There is a mental fear which provokes others of us to see the images of witches in a neighbor’s yard and stampedes us to burn down his house. And there is a creeping fear of doubt—doubt of what we have been taught, of the validity of so many things we have long since taken for granted to be durable and unchanging.”

This quote above certainly seems to sum up what many of us see not just in the news, but even on the various social media platforms – this growing drive to simplify things into black-and-white, us vs them, good vs bad, and why the same actions perpetuated by us is necessary but by others is an act of violence and war.

And yet, the truth is this quote is not referring to our current global realities, but to a bygone era – specifically the 1950s which, listening to many Western outlets both in North America and Europe, is now used as the yardstick for what we long for as the 'good old days'.

In Europe, it's used to decry the growing numbers of immigrants that some claim are threatening their country's identity, though few would articulate what that identity is for the obvious fear of being seen as bigots and racists.

Similarly, in the US and Canada, there is also a push to legislate in many parts measures in an attempt to hold back the clock, to preserve a society and way of life that most probably only know through a Norman Rockwell painting than from any real life experiences or moments.

Again, the quote above is not a reflection of today, but it is a commentary made by renowned journalist Edward J. Murrow in 1951 as an introduction to this radio series “This I Believe”. It reveals that our sense of nostalgia and notions of a “Paradise Lost” are not only ill-informed, but patently wrong.

Granted, there are many challenges that the world as a whole has to face and address. But the easy road is to look over our shoulders and bemoan for a time that never really existed instead of being honest about the rose-coloured lens we view our past through.

And quite frankly, the solutions to today's challenges are not found in that nostalgic past, but in our ability to see beyond the hardships, the horrors, the frustrations, the disappointments, and things basically going wrong so that we commit ourselves to roll up our sleeves and do our part to make things better.

And that's not an easy thing to do – I know that myself as there are times where I feel like things are getting worse as more attention is directed towards signs of that cynicism and despair Murrow talked about over 60 years ago. There are times when I feel like joining in the collective indifference to what's going on around us and focus instead on tending only to my piece of the larger puzzle that makes up our community, our country, and our world.

And yet, the fact is that there will always be hardships, there will always be challenges and there will always be failures. While news outlets and commentators would have us believe that this is the world becoming sour, of how much we've fallen, and of how much we've lost, the truth is that this has been a constant of the human condition on Earth. That's why we can't allow ourselves to be held down by apathy and disinterest, taking action only when it's driven by our ill-informed fears and anger.

If we want things to be better – for ourselves and for our communities - then we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard. To no longer view things solely through our perspective, but to understand and learn about the diversity of viewpoints and to understand what fuels them.

Again, this is not a modern-day, 21st century challenge, but one that has dogged humanity for as long as we've walked this Earth. And once again, we only need to look at these words shared by Edward J. Murrow at the end of his introduction to this news series in 1951 for proof of that:

“In talking to people, in listening to them, I have come to realize that I don’t have a monopoly on the world’s problems. Others have their share, often far, far bigger than mine. This has helped me to see my own problems in truer perspective. And in learning how others have faced their problems, this has given me fresh ideas about how to tackle mine.”

As we look back at our collective history, we can see that things are not as bad as we might think as the opportunity remains for us to rise above our fears, our anger, and our hatred so we can in fact listen to others – especially those from different backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, and values – so that we can in fact create a tomorrow that's far better than any nostalgic vision we might have of our past.___Thoughts of the Day
