It is incomprehensible to believe what is going on in North Korea. This was a segment on 60 minutes last night. A 23 year old North Korean escaped from a political concentration camp and fled to the south. He is the only one ever believed to escape. His story relates the 3 generation rule employed in North Korea. If you are deemed a political enemy you are imprisoned for life at hard labor at one in a network of these camps. This is not all however, your grandparents, parents and children are also imprisoned with you.
This young man was born in the camp and knew nothing of life outside the camp. He believed that all people were born in similar camps and knew nothing of the outside world. He stated that you are not allowed to live with other family members in the camp. He stated that the residents of the camp are kept barely alive with meager meals and supplies. There were regular public executions... more »

The Future is now!

There was a feature on facial recognition yesterday on 60 minutes. I t got me thinking of what this technology could do if integrated with #Google Now and #Google glass. The report on 60 minutes related the fact that many corporations are now employing facial recognition software in their daily operations. Examples of this are billboards that target advertisements to you depending on your age, gender, race ect. Another was a company developing software that would follow you around via public video surveillance and serve you advertisements and suggestions based on facial recognition and demographics.
This made me consider what could now become a reality if Google were to partner with a video surveillance database of facial profiles. It would be able to serve you ads and purchase suggestions based on your web surfing history. Google has been developing andcomp... more »

When I first saw the Matrix it was truly original. It changed the way science fiction could be depicted on screen. From Bullet time, to the unique color palette and mind bending themes.Since then I have been waiting for a film that changed the rules to that extent.

Update on my experiences in a new Dolby Atmos theater in Paramus NJ.        ( about 10 miles outside New York City) The first film I saw in this theater was The new Die Hard film. Wasn't much better than usual Dolby Digital . I was underwhelmed, the Atmos demo before the film was much better. I went back to see Iron Man 3 in this theater over the weekend. By the way they charge 18.00 to see a film in this theater. The audio in Iron Man was tremendous in this theater. It had the punch of an IMAX theater with much more sound localization. This is made possible by two rows of speakers on the ceiling that run perpendicular to the screen from front to back. I assume this film was mastered for Atmos given the much better sound. Can't wait till all theaters are equipped with this technology. Luckily I live in a county of aprox. 1 million people in Northern NJ so we usually get the latest theatertec... more »

Lockheed Martin announced a new Graphene membrane they have developed that would make it easier to make drinking water from salt water. The membrane has perforations that allow H2O to pass through but that are small enough that block the sodium and chlorine molecules from passing through. This could  have enormous implications in the developing world.

This is really disturbing and a little scary for the future of US competitiveness. The Chinese Government is genetically breading smarter people. They have collected DNA from the most intelligent people worldwide and have studied their genetic code to see what makes them smarter. They are using this information to optimize the intelligence of their future generations.

Went to a new Dolby Atmos certified AMC theater in Paramus, NJ recently to see the new Die Hard Movie. When I sat down I was impressed with the amount of speakers. There were 2 rows of speakers running across the ceiling from front to back of the theater as well as 3 rows of speakers on each wall and an assortment on the back wall. Before the movie started they played an ATMOS Demo advertisement that lasted about 10 seconds. It was without a doubt the best theater sound I have ever experienced, IMAX included. The sound field was wall to wall with discreet sounds emanating from hundreds of points of the theater. I became very excited to experience the movie with this new sound system. The movie however did not take much advantage of the new system. I don't know if the film was mastered with the ATMOS sound codec but it was far less impressive that the demo.
