*Facebook Rejects Ad Highlighting Zuckerberg Group’s Support For Keystone XL*
"When a subsidiary of Mark Zuckerberg’s new political group started airing ads for expanded oil drilling and the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, CREDO Action decided to post an ad of their own calling Zuckerberg out — on Facebook.
"This morning, Facebook rejected CREDO’s Facebook ad (pictured right). According to CREDO Action, Facebook initially informed them they rejected the ad because it used Facebook trademarks — specifically, Zuckerberg’s image. Though the image used was fully licensed for creative commons use, a Facebook representative told ThinkProgress that any images of Zuckerberg are off-limits, as he is part of the Facebook brand. The rules governing Facebook brand usage specify “trademarks, names, domain names, logos” but does not explicitly restrict images of Zucke... more »

The CLARITY technique for clearing brains was making a lot of buzz last week, but we in the invert neurobiology community have been doing that for decades.
A gallery of neurons, seen through cleared neural tissue, for your enjoyment.

“Hands Free Lab Notebook”: Smartphones are ubiquitous, but they are impractical in the laboratory. Gloves prevent interaction with touchscreens, chemicals prevent keyboard use, and scientists are already juggling too much. #ifihadglass, I would develop a hands-free lab notebook app for Google Glass, with experiment management, observation transcription and reference searching.

UCSD neuroscience outreach program showing people how awesome the nervous system is at the San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering!
We're here at Petco Park in San Diego until 6pm, come on down!
We've got:
-sheep brains you can touch
-penguin, mantra ray, and other interesting brains you can look at
-a Spiker Box from Backyard Brains demonstrating electrical recordings from a cockroach leg
-a Roboroach also from Backyard Brains - a cockroach whose movements we can control by stimulating its antennae

Announcing the Off the beaten (tenure) track interview series
#leavingacademia
Leaving academia has always been a very personal subject for me. After my own experiences and attending the session led by
+Catherine Anderson and +Mark Hahnel at +ScienceOnline 2013 on life after leaving academia, I decided that it would be useful to profile people who have made that transition. I am happy to announce that I'll be profiling several people under the Off the beaten (tenure) track interview series.
Thanks to everyone who is participating and if you'd like to participate, or know of someone who should, please let me know!

The Reader shutdown is putting two things into sharp relief for me:
• Google is making a mistake, but at least they're doing this the right way. We have three months to find alternatives so we got plenty of advance warning. And they provide good ways to export and migrate our data from the service. This is in sharp contrast to other service providers that do everything they can to make migration difficult.
• For all that they handle it well, depending on one service provider makes me vulnerable. I've worried a bit about GMail before; this only reinforces my wish to move to a non-Google email provider for my webmail (my private email mostly never touches GMail).
Now I also start to worry about Blogger. I have years of blog entries there; it may not be of much value to anybody else, but it does make for a public-facing diary and occasional tiny soapbox, and I'd lik... more »

Using GIFs to visualize the variation in bird songs
Here, 18 songs of a Vesper Sparrow are graphed and animated, showing how the opening notes vary little, while the ending varies greatly. Perhaps the stereotyped opening lets the bird identify itself unambiguously to a potential mate or rival (“I am a typical Vesper Sparrow!”), while the jazzy ending allows it to show off its improvisational virtuosity (“I’m not your ordinary Vesper Sparrow!”).

Talk about a sleeper ride
This kid is funny and talented. You might see this as a piece of junk. If you factor in the kids sense of humor, it's actually pretty amazing that he put all this together.
