DevTools port forwarding allows localhost URLs to work on mobile
+Umar Hansa shares his new workflow:
1. Chrome to Phone my localhost URL from desktop
2. Remote Debug the mobile localhost page and enable port forwarding
3. Refresh and observe that no command line was needed!
Keep in mind that Port Forwarding is an experimental feature.

Interesting results from an experiment I ran recently to switch Google+ from downloading CSS via XHR to using the link tag.
We were using XHR to download CSS (this was to work around an issue in IE - exceeding the limit on the number of rules in a single stylesheet; for convenience we used XHR for all browsers). When it came it our attention that XHRs are requested at low priority (unless they are sync), we decided to run an experiment to see its impact on G+ latency.
In SPDY capable browsers this resulted in a big latency improvement. In Chrome 27 we saw a 4x speedup at the median, and 5x at 25th percentile. In Firefox 21 we saw a 5x speedup at median, and 8x at 25th percentile. No significant impact was seen at the 99th percentile.
In conclusion, in a SPDY world, XHRs are requested at low priority (except sync XHRs), and are opaque to the browser. Using declarative markup... more »

\o/ I thought this would take another 10 years! Looks like the EU is serious about cutting all roaming charges, and that includes internet access (which the EU have previously not bothered much about).
Taking a short train ride shouldn't end up costing you several pounds/Euros per MB. Let's hope this passes ...

As was announced at Google I/O, the PHP runtime for App Engine has been launched (https://developers.google.com/appengine/docs/php/).
We've just announced the Google App Engine WordPress plugin, which wires together some WordPress features with App Engine APIs, for now including:
- Sending e-mail using the Mail API.
- Uploading and serving media files to Google Cloud Storage.
See the post for info on installation and configuration.
And while Google App Engine for PHP is in Preview, keep track of what's new on http://gaeforphp-blog.appspot.com/ -- itself a Wordpress install running on App Engine.

This is by far the best take on iOS7 I've seen. Exactly my thoughts (just put into a much better form than I could evert put them). I'm happy that iOS has taken the best features around and made them even better. Now Android has to catch up and make our phones even better. Competition is good for us, the consumers. This will push Google's team to work even harder than they have before.

Moving keychain passwords to the cloud, now that iCloud has 2-factor authentication, reminds me of those studies where people drive faster if they're required to wear seatbelts.
Not actually a bad thing; it's just an example of fixing the risk level and reverse-engineering it by adjusting the influencing variables.

The word “almost” has an unusual property: its letters (a, l, m, o, s, t) appear in the word in alphabetical order. There are other words like this that have at least six letters, as shown in the picture. The longest of these is aegilops, which is a type of grass.
If, like me, you enjoy this sort of thing, you may be interested in the web page where I found this information (http://goo.gl/b54Je). That site contains as many word oddities as anyone could want, and some more.

A very well written summary of the mobile web. I really like "There is no pixel-perfect" section - I remember getting screamed at by a well known publishing brand for saying that their image only rendering of magazine pages is not what we want on the web. Apparently pixel perfection trumps accessibility, search-ability and search engine index-ability.
