Jean-Marc Luna36,938My buddies (432/1)of the G+ villageI am happy to share (finally) my first big circles (432/1 and 432/2) with you. It is also a way to thank you and to inform you of my consideration. You will find in these two circles all the people I follow regularly since my first steps on Google+ and which accompany me for soon two years in this beautiful adventure, bringing every day, by their sympathy, their humor, their knowledge, their generosity and their open-mindedness, a bit extra to my everyday life.I do not know everybody, I have crossed the path with some, I communicate more with some and many people became friends, thing which I did not expect by landing here. When I began, I was lucky enough to discover new interesting people, thanks to the system of circles sharing, and I hope that these both will be for you of the same utility. If you add a “plus”, maybe it will have an impact on climate change,if you share this circle, maybe Putin is going to get married with an ukrainian women in 2014,if you include me in your circles, maybe it will solve the problem of hunger in the world,Maybe ... but in fact, nothing is sure ;)A good day to all :)With a special thought for #dirktalamasca   #sharedcircles   #circles   #circlesharing  2014-03-31 15:25:36432612456

"U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa (photo) is now the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, after Republicans took over the Senate in the November elections. Responsible for subcommittee assignments, Grassley, along with the subcommittee's new Chair, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, have changed the name of the Senate Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil and Human Rights to the Senate Subcommittee on the Constitution.

It's a clear reminder and example of exactly what Republicans hold dear, and what they have contempt for.

Civil and human rights groups are furious."

This week, it did. And science won — by a vote of 98-1.

Scrapping unfair obstacles to energy investments is just as important as dispensing with subsidies. The more cross-border pipelines and power cables the better. America should approve Keystone XL and lift its export restrictions, while European politicians should make it much easier to exploit the oil and gas in the shale beneath their feet.

This ambitious to-do list will drive regiments of energy lobbyists potty. But for the first time in years it is within the realm of the politically possible. And it would plainly lead to a more efficient and greener energy future. So our message to politicians is a simple one. Seize the day."___

Curbelo and Ernst gave the officially sanctioned GOP responses and a statement from the House Republican Conference said the two "delivered the same Republican message."___

What are your thoughts here? Do you like this idea? Are you opposed? Why do you think as you do on this issue? Let's hear it.

"Neither candidate held one general election campaign event in California — or in 37 other states. Only 12 states saw any events. And 96% of the 253 events were held in eight battleground states. Nevada, with only six electoral votes, had 13 campaign stops and $55 million spent on it for ads.

For three-fourths of the states, it was a total snub.

These figures come from Fair Vote, a nonpartisan group trying to reform the system so that every vote counts.

It's a simple idea that doesn't require a constitutional amendment.

States form a compact that obligates each to cast all its electoral votes for the candidate who wins the national popular vote. The compact wouldn't go into effect until signed by enough states to make up a majority of the Electoral College votes.

People must get over the notion that states should elect a president. Citizens should elect their national leader, as they do governors and members of Congress.

So far, 11 states have inked the compact. They possess 165 — or 61% — of the necessary 270 electoral votes. These states come in all sizes — small, medium and large.

California signed up in 2011. New York was the latest last April. The focus now is on Oregon, Connecticut and Delaware. There's hope of electing by popular vote in 2020."___What are your thoughts here? Do you like this idea? Are you opposed? Why do you think as you do on this issue? Let's hear it.

"So, honey, you're wondering what's so terrible about abortion? Well lemme mansplain it to ya. Abortion is terrible, horrible, and really bad, because it deprives a man of his right to force his girlfriend, his casual sex partner, the girl he met in a one night stand, to make him a baby that he really doesn't intend to parent. And, you see, if you have an abortion, you might just ruin his life. Like, for reals.

That's pretty much the gist of this production from Heroic Media, a Texas based anti-abortion advocacy group that seems to think abortion really gets down to how it makes a man feel."

"And the list goes on. And no matter the issue, it’s the same chunk. If you’ve gotten involved in any of these debates, you know that these people aren’t happy warriors; they’re red-faced angry, with special rage directed at know-it-alls who snootily point out that the facts don’t support their position.

The question, as I said at the beginning, is why. Why the dogmatism? Why the rage? And why do these issues go together, with the set of people insisting that climate change is a hoax pretty much the same as the set of people insisting that any attempt at providing universal health insurance must lead to disaster and tyranny?

And why do these issues go together, with the set of people insisting that climate change is a hoax pretty much the same as the set of people insisting that any attempt at providing universal health insurance must lead to disaster and tyranny?

Well, it strikes me that the immovable position in each of these cases is bound up with rejecting any role for government that serves the public interest. If you don’t want the government to impose controls or fees on polluters, you want to deny that there is any reason to limit emissions. If you don’t want the combination of regulation, mandates and subsidies that is needed to extend coverage to the uninsured, you want to deny that expanding coverage is even possible. And claims about the magical powers of tax cuts are often little more than a mask for the real agenda of crippling government by starving it of revenue.

And why this hatred of government in the public interest? Well, the political scientist Corey Robin argues that most self-proclaimed conservatives are actually reactionaries. That is, they’re defenders of traditional hierarchy — the kind of hierarchy that is threatened by any expansion of government, even (or perhaps especially) when that expansion makes the lives of ordinary citizens better and more secure. I’m partial to that story, partly because it helps explain why climate science and health economics inspire so much rage.

Whether this is the right explanation or not, the fact is that we’re living in a political era in which facts don’t matter. This doesn’t mean that those of us who care about evidence should stop seeking it out. But we should be realistic in our expectations, and not expect even the most decisive evidence to make much difference."___

Given the data that deaths due to guns will soon be the number one cause of death in the U.S., exceeding cars this year, what, if anything, can be done to help mitigate this? Is the political debate so poisoned by absolutists that no progress can be made? Or are there common sense proposals that can be negotiated and agreed upon that would gather enough support to shield backers from attacks from absolutists?

"ACCORDING to data gathered by the Centres for Disease Control (CDC), deaths caused by cars in America are in long-term decline. Improved technology, tougher laws and less driving by young people have all led to safer streets and highways. Deaths by guns, though—the great majority suicides, accidents or domestic violence—have been trending slightly upwards. This year, if the trend continues, they will overtake deaths on the roads.

The Centre for American Progress first spotted last February that the lines would intersect. Now, on its reading, new data to the end of 2012 support the view that guns will surpass cars this year as the leading killer of under 25s. Bloomberg Government has gone further. Its compilation of the CDC data in December concluded that guns would be deadlier for all age groups.

...

Car technologies and road laws are ever-evolving: in 2014, for example, the National Highways Traffic Safety Administration announced its plan to phase in mandatory rear-view cameras on new light vehicles, while New York City lowered its speed limit for local roads. By contrast, safety features on firearms—such as smartguns unlocked by an owner’s thumbprint or a radio-frequency encryption—are opposed by the National Rifle Association, whose allies in Congress also block funding for the sort of public-health research that might show, in even clearer detail, the cost of America’s love affair with guns."___Given the data that deaths due to guns will soon be the number one cause of death in the U.S., exceeding cars this year, what, if anything, can be done to help mitigate this? Two weeks ago, Clawson raised eyebrows again, casting a vote for Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) – yes that Rand Paul – to be Speaker of the House. That the Kentucky senator is not a member of the House apparently didn’t bother the congressman."___
