Ahh, it's about that time of the year--- all of the regular TV series are winding down and there's nothing but trash on TV. So, what's a girl to do? What's a girl to watch?

Why, reruns of the West Wing of course!

Are there any shows that you re-watch, time and time again?

Dear smart people of the Internet --

Can you help me identify this sound (or series of sounds?)

This video was recorded in the south in an area near a lake/swampy-area. There are alligators in residence.

Are they cicadas? Ducks? Ducks with kazoos?

It's driving me insane.

Thanks!

Just passed my 4 year #Googleversary  last month and was taking a stroll through memory lane.

A lot has changed here at +Google in the four years I've been here-- I've met a ton of great people and have worked on some amazing products and have also witnessed some crazy feats in technology.

But at the core of it all is a great group of people, and kindness-- something that can easily be forgotten when you spend your days staring at the screen and immersed in bits, bytes and blips.

We often have the ability to forget that every action is tied to an actual human-- at some point in time every line of code was someone's thought, every note on a dollar in a conference room was a person's honest intention.

Today, this photo reminded me of how good (and silly) people can be.

"Spotted in a +Google conference room:

A $1 bill with a post-it note that reads:

"Found $1 1/17/2012 Please help it find its home"

So many great things about this-- the dollar still sitting there, the dollar having a note, and the fact that I get to work with such an honest community of people.

Such exciting news!

Today we’re unwrapping the best holiday gift we could’ve imagined: the first real build of our self-driving vehicle prototype.

The vehicle we unveiled in May (goo.gl/qDUtgq) was an early mockup—it didn’t even have real headlights! Since then, we’ve been working on different prototypes-of-prototypes, each designed to test different systems of a self-driving car—for example, the typical “car” parts like steering and braking, as well as the “self-driving” parts like the computer and sensors. We’ve now put all those systems together in this fully functional vehicle—our first complete prototype for fully autonomous driving.

We’re going to be spending the holidays zipping around our test track, and we hope to see you on the streets of Northern California in the new year.  Our safety drivers will continue to oversee the vehicle for a while longer, using temporary manual controls as needed while we continue to test and learn.  Happy holidays!___Such exciting news!

Are you a #Developer ? Then you should stop what you're doing RIGHT NOW and hop on over to the +Google Developers blog to complete our first developers survey! (Okay, fine, you can submit that last CL -- but THEN, you should head on to the Developers blog!)

The survey should only take 10 to 15 minutes of your time, and in addition to helping us improve our products, you can also help raise money to educate children around the globe. For every developer who completes the survey, we will donate $10 USD (up to a maximum amount of $20,000USD total) to your choice of one of these six education-focused organizations: Khan Academy, World Fund, Donors Choose, Girl Rising, Raspberry Pi, and Agastya.

Ready, set, survey!

Looking to design and build HTML5 ads, web content and more... just a little bit easier? Try out +Google Web Designer

It's an advanced web application that lets you do just that. Using Google Web Designer's design view you can create content using drawing tools, text, and 3D objects, and you can animate objects and events on a timeline. Once you're done creating your content, Google Web Designer outputs clean human-readable HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript.

Pretty neat.

Have you heard about #projecttango? From our friends over at #ATAP, Tango is designed to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion.

Project Tango devices contain customized hardware and software designed to track the full 3D motion of the device, while simultaneously creating a map of the environment. These sensors allow the device to make over a quarter million 3D measurements every second, updating its position and orientation in real-time, combining that data into a single 3D model of the space around you.

This year, the #iohunt team set up a special bonus challenge to let attendees get a real feel for Tango-- here, you overcome extreme "obstacles" like easels and screens-- each of which transform into doors and portals-- to capture coins and more!

What a gorgeous photo!

Color Run Happiness

Yesterday, I shot the Color Run in Brisbane (and yes, I only took my camera there in a waterproof case to keep it safe from the corn flour being thrown). I think the organisers have hit the nail on the head when they say it's the 'Happiest 5K on Earth,' because I certainly had a blast...and it looked like everyone else was too!

This scene is from the end of the race, when they have a DJ on stage who leads a 'colour throw' every 15 minutes. Everyone is given a packet of a different colour, and all at once, they throw them up in the air. It's quite a sight to see!

Incredibly sad news coming out of Isla Vista (the town just outside of the University of Santa Barbara), last night there was a mass shooting through the town, leaving 7 dead and 7 more injured.

Names aren't available as of posting, but its likely most are students -- one was killed while on his bike and others were at the local market.

Terrible. My thoughts are with my fellow Gauchos and their families. I wish these things would stop happening.

Ahh, it's about that time of the year--- all of the regular TV series are winding down and there's nothing but trash on TV. So, what's a girl to do? What's a girl to watch?

Why, reruns of the West Wing of course!

Are there any shows that you re-watch, time and time again?

Signs you're a little nerdy. Or at least love really bad puns.

In a cab this morning on my way to an event, the cab driver asks me for the address and confirms if its drive or lane. I tell him I don't know and he says he can't remember (its not a normal address he goes to) since he hasn't had his coffee yet but the GPS will know. (Its lane, FWIW) he makes a comment that "the GPS is smart and it doesn't even need coffee-- it will tell us"

I replied, "coffee would be bad for it, unless it runs java!"

He wasn't nearly as entertained as I was, and we have been sitting in silence ever since. Whoops.

Americans often make fun of our kind neighbors to the north (everyone knows the poor Canadian stereotype: ay and Mounties). But, after a short trip to Vancouver,  I'm beginning to think that the reason why many Canadians "allow" this joking  is because they simply don't want anyone knowing about the gorgeous country they're hiding.

*= I am fully aware that there are loads of customizations / apps out there. I like to compare things straight out of the box -- for lack of a better phrase -- apples to apples. Adding an app to a device is customizing an experience -- it's adding icing to a sugar cookie. It's extra pizzazz. Sure it can be good, but if you don't get the basic cookie right, it just ends up being too much and you walk away feeling overwhelmed and overloaded. ___

Growing up in the Bay Area (and as a frequenter of Moffett Field), Hangar One has lots of special memories for me -- including the annual air shows, visits from reigning Presidents deplaning Air Force One and more.

Its hard to understand just how impressive and large Hangar One is until you see it and stand at its massive doors, but to help you understand, it could hold three Titanic ships -- side by side-- with room to spare!

NASA's Hangar 1: Among the world's largest freestanding structures
Hangar One is one of the world's largest freestanding structures, covering 8 acres (32,000 m2). The hangar was constructed in 1931. It is a Naval Historical Monument and a State of California Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. In May 2008, The National Trust for Historic Preservation listed Hangar One on their list of America's "Most Endangered Places". NASA's Ames Research Center is currently evaluating bids to lease the hangar and Moffett Federal Airfield.

In this image, Hangar One is set in blue courtesy of event planners and sponsors of the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics and Life Sciences event held in December 13, 2013 at Moffett Federal Airfield in California.

Moffett Field's "Hangar One" (built during the Depression era for the USS Macon) and the row of World War II blimp hangars are still some of the largest unsupported structures in the country. The airship hangar is constructed on a network of steel girders sheathed with galvanized steel. It rests firmly upon a reinforced pad anchored to concrete pilings. The floor covers eight acres (32,000 m²) and can accommodate Six (6) (360 feet x 160 feet) football fields. The airship hangar itself, measures 1,133 feet (343 m) long and 308 feet (93 m) wide.

The building has aerodynamic architecture. Its walls curve upward and inward, to form an elongated dome 198 feet (60 m) high. The clam-shell doors were designed to reduce turbulence when the Macon moved in and out on windy days. The "orange peel" doors, weighing 500 tons (511.88 tons) each, are moved by their own 150 horsepower motors operated via an electrical control panel.

The airship hangar's interior is so large that fog sometimes forms near the ceiling. A person unaccustomed to its vastness is susceptible to optical disorientation. Looking across its deck, planes and tractors look like toys. Along its length maintenance shops, inspection laboratories and offices help keep the hangar busy. Looking up, a network of catwalks for access to all parts of the structure can be seen. Two elevators meet near the top, allowing maintenance personnel to get to the top quickly and easily.

Narrow gauge tracks run through the length of the hangar. During the period of lighter-than-air dirigibles and non-rigid aircraft, the rails extended across the apron and into the fields at each end of the hangar. This tramway facilitated the transportation of an airship on the mooring mast to the airship hangar interior or to the flight position. During the brief period that the Macon was based at Moffett, Hangar One accommodated not only the giant airship but several smaller non-rigid lighter-than-air craft simultaneously.

USS Macon (ZRS-5) was a rigid airship built and operated by the United States Navy for scouting and served as a "flying aircraft carrier", designed to carry biplane parasite aircraft, five single-seat Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk for scouting or two-seat Fleet N2Y-1 for training. In service for less than two years, in 1935 Macon was damaged in a storm and lost off California's Big Sur coast, though most of the crew were saved.

Moffett Federal Airfield is a joint civil-military airport located between northern Mountain View and northern Sunnyvale, California, USA. The airport is near the south end of San Francisco Bay, northwest of San Jose. Formerly a United States Navy facility, the former naval air station is now owned and operated by the NASA Ames Research Center.

Moffett Airfield is home to H211, LLC, owned by Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Through the LLC they pay $1.3 million a year to NASA to park their Boeing 767-200 and other Gulfstream V jets. In addition, the airplanes have also had scientific equipment installed by NASA to allow for experiments to be run in flight.

I forgot my bag on the NJT train!

[tl;dr: an amazing person picked up my bag, noticed the email address on my tablet's lock screen, and returned my bag! Everyone should add their phone and/or email to their lock screens.]

Tonight's commute was unusual but ended well. I rushed from TGIAF and attempted to catch the 5:50PM train to NJ. I missed the train by one minute and had to wait for the 6:18PM.

When the train arrived I settled in; three bottles of whisky against my left leg, my messenger bag behind my feet, and Kindle in hand. I started reading and immediately started feeling sleepy.

I fell asleep. It's extremely rare that I fall asleep, I'm sure the samples of whiskey didn't hurt. I woke up when the train was stopped... one station after my stop. I quickly gathered my kindle, whiskey, and jacket and jumped off the train. The doors closed behind me and I immediately realized my mistake. I rushed to the front of the train, knocking on exit doors as I passed. I reached a ticket agent and quickly explained that I left my bag two cars back. The agent refused to open the doors so I could get back on! It's possible that she couldn't stop the train but I was extremely disappointed.

I was hopeful that the agent would take my bag to the NJT lost-and-found since I told her exactly where I left it. Camera. Tablet. Notebook. Car key. Badge... all of my every day items missing.

Jenna picked me up and we returned home where I moped for about an hour. I started thinking about everything in my bag and what, if anything, could allow someone to identify its owner. My badge and tablet lock screen were the only items with my name or email address on them.

I decided to check my email just-in-case. Amazingly, someone had emailed me about my bag! The person noticed my bag at the last stop and decided to grab  it so it wouldn't be stolen or "lost" by NJT. I immediately called him and he drove 20 minutes to my location. He returned my bag and politely declined the reward I offered.

I'm still shocked that the NJT agent left my bag. I am grateful that someone was nice enough to find it, locate me, and then drive it to my location. I'll certainly do their same thing if I'm ever in the that situation.

(I'll likely place an ID card in my bag as well; I would have been out-of-luck if my tablet's battery had died.)___I love hearing about the kindness of strangers!
