So I'm actually really digging Google+. It seems that a lot of folks have given up on it as ...So I'm actually really digging Google+. It seems that a lot of folks have given up on it as simply a Facebook alternative, but I think that's the wrong way to look at it.
Really I think it's best to look at G+ as a hybrid of something like Twitter, FB, RSS and a blog. While you can use it to keep in touch with friends it also offers a lot of opportunities for sharing information and ideas across a wide variety of people.
For example I started following this Google circle that I'm sharing, from it I've learned a LOT about android development, chrome and other google projects, but at the same time I've learned more than I imagined about the science of coffee brewing and some great travel destinations.
One of the important steps to actually using Google+ effectively seems to be realizing that it's not all about your "wall/stream" as a catch all. The tool seems to be much more effective when you skip through your streams by circle. For example, when I want to see what my friends are up to I check that Circle's stream, when I want to see what my friends in the States are doing I can check out that stream, or if I'm looking to see what different projects are coming up through Google I check my Google Circle's stream.
I think it's also important to realize that unlike facebook but like twitter, you WANT to follow people you DONT KNOW. Don't be afraid, there are lots of interesting folks and posts out there and if you see something interesting, give that person a follow and throw them in a Circle that makes sense. Then going forward you can target your posts to people in the circles that might find them interesting.
Anyway, the tl;dnr: Use circles, follow people, be a nerd.. and more importantly let's share some circles. If you have one with interesting people, share it like this and you'll really see the potential of the site open up.
