The best quote is not from the article but from a comment.

The closest experience that most researchers have with the concept of Open Access is indeed Open Source Software, and the most common forms of OSS licences with Copyleft. This intuitively works for many researchers – the idea that they are happy to provide the output of their research for use to anyone as long as those people do likewise. On the other hand, the idea that we should provide our research output free for corporations to redistribute and profit from is something that a huge number, possibly a majority, of researchers would be thoroughly against.

A comprehensive approach to zinc-finger recombinase customization enables genomic targeting in human cells

by
Gaj T, Mercer AC, Sirk SJ, Smith HL, Barbas CF

"Zinc-finger recombinases (ZFRs) represent a potentially powerful class of tools for targeted genetic engineering. These chimeric enzymes are composed of an activated catalytic domain derived from the resolvase/invertase family of serine recombinases and a custom-designed zinc-finger DNA-binding domain. The use of ZFRs, however, has been restricted by sequence requirements imposed by the recombinase catalytic domain. Here, we combine substrate specificity analysis and directed evolution to develop a diverse collection of Gin recombinase catalytic domains capable of recognizing an estimated 3.77 × 10(7) unique DNA sequences. We show that ZFRs assembled from these engineered catalytic... more »

New research brings light to star mystery

Scientists at Northumbria University have begun to unlock the mystery of why the outer edge of the Sun is much hotter than its surface for the first time.

Magnetic loop structures in the corona of the Sun. The loops highlight the Sun’s magnetic field and are visible because they support the dense, million degree gas typical of the corona. The image is courtesy of the Science Team for NASA’s Solar Dynamic Observatory.

DNA Analysis Reveals Common Origin of Tianyuan Humans and Native Americans, Asians
An international team of scientists has sequenced nuclear and mitochondrial DNA extracted from remains of a 40,000-year-old human found at the Tianyuan Cave site near Beijing, China. The results show Tianyuan humans shared a common origin with ancestors of many present-day Asians and Native Americans.

Humans with morphology similar to present-day humans appear in the fossil record across Eurasia between 40,000 and 50,000 years ago. The genetic relationships between these early modern humans and present-day human populations had not yet been established.

The team, including Dr Svante Pääbo and Dr Qiaomei Fu from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, extracted nuclear and mitochondrial DNA from a leg bone found in 2003 at the Tianyuan Cave site, located outside Beijing.more »

Earth may be crashing through dark matter walls

Article by Lisa Grossman
Earth is constantly crashing through huge walls of dark matter, and we already have the tools to detect them. That's the conclusion of physicists who say the universe may be filled with a patchwork quilt of force fields created shortly after the big bang.

Observations of how mass clumps in space suggest that about 86 per cent of all matter is invisible dark matter, which interacts with ordinary matter mainly through gravity. The most popular theory is that dark matter is made of weakly interacting massive particles.

WIMPs should also interact with ordinary matter via the weak nuclear force, and their presence should have slight but measurable effects. However, years of searches for WIMPs have been coming up empty.

Pospelov and colleagues have been examining a theory that at... more »

West Antarctic Ice Sheet warming twice earlier estimate !

Central West Antarctica among the most rapidly warming regions on Earth.

US researchers say they found the first evidence of warming during the southern hemisphere's summer months.

They are worried that the increased melting of ice as a result of warmer temperatures could contribute to sea-level rise.

There is clear evidence that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is contributing to sea-level rise, reports nature.com

"What we're seeing is one of the strongest warming signals on Earth," says Andrew Monaghan, a co-author and scientist at the US National Centre for Atmospheric Research.http... more »

Mankind's most ambitious scientific and engineering project - replicate the Sun here on Earth.

#fusion   #nuclearpower   #sciencesunday   #france   #europeanunion   #euromaestro   #research

The BBC reports on the construction of the world's biggest fusion energy reactor taking place in France.

When construciton is complete, the site will host a 73-metre high machine that will attempt to create boundless energy by smashing hydrogen nuclei together in much the same as stars do.

Today 85 percent of our energy needs come from fossil fuels.  If we are to reduce carbon emissions in an attempt to limit global warming, we need to reduce our usage of fossil fuels dramatically.  However, at the same time global energy demand is expected to double by 2050.

Fusion may be the answer.

Supersonic plane can fly Mach 6 - Can fly from London to New York in 1 hour.

#aviation   #nasa   #research   #technologynews   #euromaestro

Called Waverider because of the way it "rides" on the supersonic sound waves it creates, the vehicle achieves dazzling speeds because it has scramjet engine, which has no moving parts and sucks oxygen out of the atmosphere in order to ignite its hydrogen fuel. The result is an efficient and extremely powerful engine.

The technology could ultimately be used in a commercial craft.  The Concorde managed to fly at Mach 2 and this plane should be capable of flying 3 times faster.

EADS Vice President of business development discusses developping a commercial aircraft capable of Mach 4.

"Such an aircraft will be very expensive, of course, because of the enormous amounts of energy thatis re... more »
