Wayne Marinovich26,506Wildlife Photographers CircleWell, it has been over a year since I last shared my wildlife photographers circle. I look forward to meeting more of you in the flesh someday. Please feel free to share this with your followers (that is how this works after all). Jean-Marc Luna36,938My buddies (432/2)of the G+ villageI am happy to share (finally) my first big circles (432/1 and 432/2) with you. It is also a way to thank you and to inform you of my consideration. You will find in these two circles all the people I follow regularly since my first steps on Google+ and which accompany me for soon two years in this beautiful adventure, bringing every day, by their sympathy, their humor, their knowledge, their generosity and their open-mindedness, a bit extra to my everyday life.I do not know everybody, I have crossed the path with some, I communicate more with some and many people became friends, thing which I did not expect by landing here. When I began, I was lucky enough to discover new interesting people, thanks to the system of circles sharing, and I hope that these both will be for you of the same utility. If you add a “plus”, maybe it will have an impact on climate change,if you share this circle, maybe Putin is going to get married with an ukrainian women in 2014,if you include me in your circles, maybe it will solve the problem of hunger in the world,Maybe ... but in fact, nothing is sure ;)A good day to all :)With a special thought for #dirktalamasca  #sharedcircles #circles #circlesharing  2014-03-31 15:30:374321234895CC G+

Georges Pauly14,521Thomas HawkShared publicly  -  30 Aug 2013 2500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 2 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Yesterday I shared last name A-Da.  This one , part 2 of 5, today, represents Da-Ho.  I'll share the remaining three next week.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 3, 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpn*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of domain errors.  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-01 19:56:06482204CC G+

Charles Lupica66,743          Top 1000 most followed active        photographers sharing content on G+                  Circle One: J to ZThis  is the second of two circles,  The first was shaerd on 16 May here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103236949470535942612/posts/FPsHj9E2QEo.  The circles have been divided alphabetically to help give more exposure to people with fewer followers and shared at different times to help keep down the stream saturation. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated. It has been two weeks since I announced my intent to update my circle of the 500 most followed photographers on G+.  I decided to do things a bit differently this time and so I'll share the top 1000.   To build the circles and the list I enlisted the aid of  +Bill Wood +Gemma Costa +Jen Baptist +Katy Houlne and +Margaret Tompkins   They built circles and vetted profiles.  My starting point for this was a list of 2000 names generously provided to me by +CircleCount. I would to thank each for their help.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the contents of what will be in the two circles. The script / finding namesThe script was provided by CircleCount and looks through the tagline of every profile on CircleCount to find the word "photo" or "foto".  If a photographer doesn't have a CircleCount profile they won't be found.  If one of these two words isn't in their tagline, they won't be found.  A few people I know have fallen into this flaw in my thinking.  To fix this, CircleCount has asked me to provide a "whitelist" of names that the script misses.  The white-list list adds another 30 or so names to the result.   Keyword world a personal viewpointIf you don't use the word photographer to describe yourself how do you expect people to find you in a search. "Searcher of cute pixels", "Creative spirit that makes art out of light"; these might be poetic, they might touch your soul but the world looks for content based on keyword searches.  SEO is going to do the same. Consider carefully the words sou use to describe yourself if you want people to find you using search technology. How was the list processedThe list was sorted by the level of activity.  People that hadn't posted in the last month (approximately April 5 to May 5th) were removed from the list.  This included people that hadn't posted or people that had posted only once in the past 4 weeks.  Again, this has some flaws but I'm mostly happy with the results.  People who are posting only in private communities o2013-05-18 13:17:2050114186132CC G+

Margaret Tompkins25,055<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Great Photographers With < 25,000 FollowersThe photographers here are all in my personal circles.  The choices are mine and mine alone.  No one asked, begged, or pleaded to belong.  No bribes were offered or accepted.  These are the people that I follow because I appreciate their great quality photography and their interaction.  Most I have met as I help curate several of the photography themes.  There are NO requirements to share this circle.  I would appreciate the people in this circle plus the post, leave a comment, and share the circle as public.  Each profile has been verified by me.  Each has < 25,000 followers (when they were put into the circle), and most are between 10,000 and 25,000 followers.  They each have high quality original photography content.  You won’t find many animated gifs!I wasn’t included, what do I do?  If you meet the criteria, weren’t included, but think you should be, then leave me a comment.  Maybe I don’t know about you.  There are millions of people on G+ and I don’t know everyone.  However, I’ll be happy to have a look at your work if you will call it to my attention. There’s a really great photographer XXX that you didn’t include.  Please feel free to recommend qualified people.  I discover new people every day and would be happy to look at their work.  Please make sure that the recommended person meets the criteria.  If they don’t then that tells me a lot about you! #Circleshare     #Sharedcircles  2012-07-25 23:09:23497209111208CC G+

Martin Bailey37,482It's been a while since I shared my Photography circle, so here goes. This circle is the result of a year on Google+ interacting with many, many amazing photographers. It isn't a comprehensive list of the best photogs on G+, and it doesn't contain everyone that I interact with or follow. I have a few other circles for people that share good info but don't interact, and I have some lists of friends that haven't taken the time to upload enough photos to make their profile look pretty. I'll shift them over when their profiles look good. Superficial? Yes, but I like things to look pretty. This isn't a list that I'll add people to on request. If our paths cross and you share good content, I'll add you in due course. If you think you should be in here but aren't, I'm sorry. Let's stay friends and you'll be in their someday if you continue to share original and interesting photography related information. There are also a number of people that write in Japanese in here. If you don't like posts in languages you don't understand, weed those plussers out later, but they are in the list primarily because they're great photographers, so hopefully you'll keep them circled.Enjoy...2012-07-18 12:47:18438501350CC G+

Paul Pichugin19,956I've just added a new person to my inspiration circle! There are only 42 people in this circle, they are people that some how inspire me, mostly photographically, but some business wise and others are just winning at life!Add this circle if you want to be inspired too! My newest addition is +Marek Potoma, their work is not getting anywhere near enough exposure here on G+!Feel free to share this circle around! 2012-06-19 14:42:4042209CC G+
Jan Kabili28,372Sharing circles is a plus for everyone. Nearly every time one of my G+ friends has been kind enough to include my name in a published circle, my follower count has gone up. And making a published circle your own is of course a great way to enjoy new G+ friends. In that spirit, here is my circle of Photoshop and Lightroom enthusiasts. Some are folks I found on G+; others asked to be added. It's all good.2012-06-18 14:32:062669316CC G+
Thomas Hawk2,473,6682,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+Part 2 of 4 (Ev-La)Part 1 of 4 (A-Ev) here:  http://goo.gl/Z333gThis is the fourth time since joining G+ almost a year ago that I'm sharing my photographers circle.  I shared it with 500 photographers, 1,000 photographers, 1,500 photographers and now 2,000 photographers.  I have to break my circle up into four 500 photographer circles as that is the G+ limit.  Each day this week (Mon.- Thurs.) I'll share a different circle.  Today is the second circle and includes photographers with the last name's Ev-La. A few notes about these circles.  I always get hated on when I share them by people.  Inevitably if I include 2,000 people, I will leave 50,000 people out.  This is not intentional or personal.  This circle is not "the best" photographers on G+ or in the world.  It doesn't mean if you are not in my circle that you are not a "quality" photographer.  This list is simply photographers that I've stumbled across for whatever reason over the past year and have chosen to follow their work.  In some cases I've gotten to know the photographers in this circle personally -- through photowalks and trips, hangouts, in real life, etc.  Many of these people are or have become my friends.  Most of the photographers in my circle though I don't even know.  They are just people whose work I admire and want to consume -- I hope many are future friends.  :)I use some objective criteria with this circle but I use a lot of subjective criteria too.  This is, afterall, my own personal circle that I look at and +1 from every single day.  My aesthetic taste and personal preferences may be very, very different than yours.  This is ok.  Art is subjective.  That said, here a breakdown of my own preferences and biases that influence who I add into my circle.1.  I like people who are active on G+.  If you haven't posted one of your photos in the last month you probably are not in this circle.  I use a script to uncircle inactive people regularly.2.  I like photographers who mostly post their own photographs.  I dislike clutter and "dumb stuff" in my photographers circle.  Excessive reshares, circle shares, memes, gifs, youtube videos, posts not about photography, web links, etc. make me uncircle or move people to a different circle.  I also like photographers who regulate how much of their photography they post to their stream.  I don't want to see 50 shots in a row of someone's vacation.  I think about 5 photos max a day feels about right to me.3.  *Controversial* I dislike signatures and watermarks.  You will find photographers in my circle that use them.  It's just a bias, not a hard and fast rule.  I mostly want this stream to be as watermark/signature free as possible.  I totally understand and respect your reasons and decision for using watermarks/signatures.  I hope you equally respect my decision to not want to consume photos mared up with them.  Please don't turn this into a discussion about watermarks/sigs, I've spent the last 10 years thinking heavily about this issue.  It's just a personal preference and bias.4.  I like people who are active, positive, helpful, enthusiastic G+ community members.  I dislike people who are rude, mean, complainers, trolls, harrasers, etc.  If you say mean things to people, about people, about their art or their work I don't want to follow you.  I'm fine with debate and disagreement.  It should just be done respectfully -- there's a huge difference between respectful disagreement and rude behavior.  Not only will you not be in this circle if you are rude, I'll probably block you too.  I want to surround myself with positive uplifting people. 5.  I like people who directly post their work here on 2012-06-05 16:20:03500152107307CC G+

Peter From35,781The Photoshoppers & Lightroomers Circle –– Validated & Revised Version #CircleSharingForThePeoplePLC2 The time has come to reshare my validated and revised Photoshoppers & Lightroomers Circle (PLC) with 500 excellent artists that produce great imagery, compositions, tips etc. You don't want to miss this one. I am proud to promote these great people and I am sure they will bring lots and lots of great and interesting stuff to your feeds. If YOU want to hop on the next PLC train, do the following:1. Help spread the word and reshare this circle post. Why? If you think you should be promoted, you should be willing to do the same for your fellow artists. Simple as that.2. Ask for inclusion in the comments. I will check every feed.3. Make sure that you share your own original artwork in your feed. If there are too many reshares of other peoples' work, irrelevant YouTube clips, animated GIFS, blog post teasers etc., I might not add you to the circle. The PLC is a validated quality circle that should bring people great imagery to their feeds.NOTE! If you see that I have plussed your comment, then you know that I have added you to the next revision of the PLC. I didn't PLUS your comment? Make sure that you have reshared this circle post and let me know that you did so.HOW TO AVOID FLOODING OF THIS POST IN YOUR FEED:This post is hash-tagged with #CircleSharingForThePeoplePLC2 so that you may mute the reshares this post will generate. That way you will avoid seeing multiple copies of this post in your feed and your adrenaline level will stay normal. I will add a new hash-tag for every announcement and circle post. That way you won't miss out on any of the action but still can mute all the duplicate reshares. Here is an excellent add-on that will help you to mute the reshares: http://code.google.com/p/nonplus/Cheers!2012-05-21 09:36:07500104117126CC G+

Just Back from Iceland

I have been wanting to go to Iceland for, well, all my life it seems. I finally made it there. The weather was total crap. Rainy, cold and relentless wind. But, that’s ok. I was in Iceland…actually standing in Iceland….seeing some of the sites that I had only seen previously through the eyes of photographers I most admire. Now, I was there seeing it for myself. What a feeling. Yes, the weather got me a down a bit, but I think I still walked away with some cool images. I didn’t get a single shot with the golden sun pouring over the landscape, though….didn’t see the sun until our last day. The sun might have come out while we were asleep. If I was there alone, I would have gone out with my camera between the hours of 2am and 6am, and slept during the day. BUT, I was with five other guys, and they are not all photographers and had no desire to follow thatplan…so, it... more »

The Things We Do To "GET THE SHOT"

Two things happened while I was taking photos of the Sweet Lips. About half way through my dive, I noticed my strobes were not firing. To my horror, I looked down at my housing and found the end of my strobe cable…the end that attaches to my housing….floating in the water. Panicking, I managed to re-attach the cable. Then I looked at my housing to be sure there was no flooding….to my relief, no water was seen inside, and to my surprise, the camera and strobes kept working after re-attaching the cable….lucky.

The next thing to happen was my own stupidity. I was so involved taking photos, I lost track of time. Eventually, I looked at my dive computer, and it read that I had to do a 6-minute decompression stop…oops….overstayed my time at depth….I then looked at my air supply, and I had less than 500 PSI left of air….notvery much….anot... more »

Erice, Sicily

Nothing like night photography in an old Mediaeval town like Erice....Cobbled stoned streets, old walls, cute little tourist stores, cafes and restaurants. The only frustrating part is waiting for people to clear out of the way. I stood next to a wall with my camera on the tripod just waiting for people to move out of the way. Why is it when you are waiting for people to move, it feels like they just stand in your way on purpose? I know they aren't, but it just feels that way...just when the path is clear, someone else steps in your frame....I had my finger on the trigger ready to fire the instant the path was clear...just needed 2 seconds for my exposure....ready, get set.....FIRE! Ya!! Got it!! Pack up the tripod, and move to the next spot....and wait again. So much fun!

Sony A7R vs Leica M9

I brought both my Sony and Leica with me to Iceland. For the first time in over ten years, I left my Nikon at home. For the most part, I left my Leica 35mm Summicron on the Sony, and had the Leica 18mm Super Elmar on the Leica. I found out early on that the 18mm did not work so well on the Sony, so used it on the Leica where it was brilliant. After going through all of my Iceland photos, I am finding that my favorites were taken with the Leica. I don't have any technical reasons, but it is what I "feel". I am so happy that I didn't sell my Leica. It is still a fantastic camera. The Sony is great too...especially when used with the Leica glass. It has twice the resolution as the Leica, but for some reason, the files from the Sony just don't have that "Look" that the Leica has...hard to explain.

I shot during the day until around 10:00pm (still light outside), but still never saw the sun except for those rare moments when it would come out for a few seconds soon to be buried in clouds again. I didn’t care, though…..I was in Iceland with my best friends, and it was all great!!

I WILL return. Yes.

Here’s the first photo I have edited from Iceland….

I have been using Leica glass for a long time with my M9 and in my film days with older M's....there really is no better glass out there, and it is so sweet to use the Leica lenses on the Sony A7R....I highly recommend the Voightlander Close-up adapter for the Sony....it enables much closer focusing distances when using Leica lenses....instead of the usual meter, it is cut down to about a half meter...comes in handy for sure! After seeing your shots with the 24mm, I am going to have to get that lens....great stuff!!

Jakarta

Most people think of Jakarta as a big, polluted city....and well, it is...BUT, there are also a ton of trees in this city...it is much "greener" than you may think. Just a few hundred years ago, this city was a dense rain forest with tigers, rhinos and other animals running around...this HUGE tree is just around the corner from where I live...probably left over from those rain forest days...amazing how it still survived as the city grew around it...

Photography Police

So, a good friend of mine came into Jakarta for a week. Before she arrived, she asked me if I could take some photos of her. She is a fitness instructor, and wanted some photos of her working out, in her bikini, etc. for her website. I told her I would be happy to shoot some photos. I had a day off of work last week, so I took my daughter, Kayla, with me to her hotel in town (a very nice place) to take some photos of her. We first walked around the hotel scoping out a good location for some photos. We went to the gym, but they told us we couldn’t take photos in the gym. We then walked out to the pool, and it seemed the perfect location for some nice photos. There was not a soul around, so we knew we wouldn’t bother anyone taking photos. I pulled out my camera, set up a single off-camera flash, and I used Kayla to be my assistant to hold a reflector. We took a few photos, then she changed clothes, and we took a few more. Just then, a guy in a suit came up to us, and asked us if we had a permit to shoot photos….Permit to shoot photos??

I told the guy in my best Indonesian, “My friend here is a guest at your hotel…we are just taking photographs here at the pool…there is nobody here, so what is the problem?” He said, “sorry, but it is our policy that you have a permit to take photos here at the pool”. I then asked, “So if I pay hundreds of dollars for a room here at the hotel and want to take photos of my kids at the pool, I need a permit??”….he said, “well, if you use an iphone or some other cheap camera, it is ok…”. I then said, “I am just using my Sony camera, and a small flash….what’s the difference?” He said, “you look like a professional….you need a permit”. Hmmm….is that a compliment? So, if you look like a professional photographer, it is not ok to take photos at a hotel pool….arrrrgh! WTF??

At this point, it was time to give up. I had gotten some good shots, so packed up my stuff, and left the hotel.___

Napolean Wrasse

This photo is for today's +Underwater Thursday !

These guys are cool. They are BIG, and curious...but not easy to get photos of. This guy made several passes in front of me, but every time I lifted my camera, he would dart away...got lucky on the 4th pass as I already had my camera to my face, and fired off a shot before he darted away.

Google Plus' Number of Views

Pretty cool addition, I must admit.

I was thinking to myself when looking at my own profile...."wow, my photos have been clicked on over 3 million times"...pretty impressive for a mere mortal...

But, I then clicked on the Google+ Phenom, +Trey Ratcliff , and was blown away....think of these numbers (I am a high school math teacher, so am intrigued by numbers)....for example, if each view was only ONE second, Trey's number of views would represent over 140 years of constant viewing.....staggering.

Eventually, I looked at my dive computer, and it read that I had to do a 6-minute decompression stop…oops….overstayed my time at depth….I then looked at my air supply, and I had less than 500 PSI left of air….notvery much….anot... more »

On my way up, the time increased to 8 minutes….uh oh….I am all alone…no one to share air with if I run out….when I got to 15 feet, I just drifted and breathed as slowly as possible watching my computer slowly…very slowly…tick down. Finally, it reached to zero, and I had only 100 pounds to spare…whew….stupid me.___

Back From a Week of Diving Raja Ampat

This was my 12th trip to Raja Ampat. I have been going there most every year since 1998. The diving was still great, but I was saddened to see so many liveaboards in the area. At some sites, there were as many as SIX liveaboard boats anchored. It's good that more people are able to visit the area, but I hope all of the divers coming to visit will not have a negative impact on the reefs...

When I first visited Raja Ampat, there were only 2 liveaboard dive boats in operation...there are now 47...and the number of homestays and land based resorts opening is staggering. Raja Ampat is no longer a secret...

Working in Indonesia

I am not sure why, but on the outer islands of Indonesia, it seems the women do all of the hard labor while the men just sit down and talk. I have seen that in Bali, Flores, Papua, Sulawesi, and now in Lombok too. If you go to a building site, you will see the women with large bricks, stones and other things on their heads carrying the materials to the building site….no men. Strange. In case you don’t believe me, I took a photo of some women unloading a boat….they are ALL women…the men were all seated smoking and talking next to the horse cart where the women were dropping off their loads…

Dance and the Sony A7R

I am loving my new camera. I shot it side by side with my Nikon D800, and shot for shot, I preferred the Sony over the D800...It might be the Leica 35mm Summicron I was using vs the 24-70 Nikon glass, but whatever it was, I am very happy with the Sony.
