"To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour..." -William Blake.
Or a galaxy in these Corn Lily leaves.
I am still editing images of Corn Lilies from June 10. This photograph is made from four frames with bracketed focus points, blended with Zerene Stacker software (http://zerenesystems.com/cms/stacker). I created the two versions, color and BW, trying to best heighten the "galaxy" effect of rain drops and pollen I was inspired by on these leaves.

One of the main dilemmas for nature photographers is how to frame an image. The choice of camera position and lens angle greatly affects the image design. Nature often provides us with chaotic lines, shapes and colors from which we must distill and extract the essence of our subject.
This past Monday, I was in Yosemite National Park photographing one of my favorite subjects - corn lilies. Returning to a favorite patch, I was happy to see that they were still fresh green in spite of recent hot weather. The leaves were covered with pollen and a light rainfall added some water drops. The wind was blowing, which meant that the leaves rarely would hold still for my camera. On top of that, the best camera position was on the shoulder of the road with tons of traffic moving the plants as they zoomed past.
From my past experiences, I was a little late for the corn lilies since they had grown... more »

STILL processing new images from May in Yosemite. This image was a challenge to my usual preference for soft lighting. Coming up with fresh "dogwood and blurred Merced River" images is tough, a combo I have been working on since the 1980s. Enjoy and share!

Although many dogwood blooms are turning brown, I found this blossom yesterday in Yosemite National Park while working with a private student.
This image is part of my ongoing Impressions of Light project, for which I have made many new images this spring season. Now all I need is some time to process and edit them all and so many other new photographs.
When I was in high school, I took art classes every semester. I think that there is still a latent painter in me... maybe I should have become one!

I am booked with private sessions during May, but now is the time to book for summer dates, and especially for the very busy autumn color season which is mid-October to early November.
Important Note: I have increased my day rate for summer sessions to $800 for a full day since the days are so long! Summer rate applies from June 1 through September 1.
If you have any questions, please message me or contact me through my Contact website page. The link below contains much detail.
Reduced rates are available to small groups, so gather some photo buddies together and meet me in Yosemite!

I am ready for the dogwood and waterfall in Yosemite! Here is a 4x5 film image made in 1990. My tripod was set up on the top of my van, with the exposure of about 20 seconds timed in between the swaying of my camera as vehicles passed on the road just a few feet away... Many of my exposures were not sharp enough, but I persevered to get this one!

Proposed Changes to Yosemite’s El Capitan Meadow
I know many of you have a close connection with Yosemite, so I thought you would want to know about some proposed changes to El Capitan Meadow. In most of the proposed alternatives for the park service's Merced River Draft Management plan, fencing and signs would be installed to keep visitors from trampling the meadow.
John Sexton wrote a thoughtful post on Facebook about this issue, which I recommend reading.

What is your definition of Photo Impressionism? I am curious to know as it is a difficult idea to pin down in words let alone visually. From my dictionary below:
Impressionism:
a style or movement in painting originating in France in the 1860s, characterized by a concern with depicting the visual impression of the moment, esp. in terms of the shifting effect of light and color.
• a literary or artistic style that seeks to capture a feeling or experience rather than to achieve accurate depiction.

"After Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter, the third pillar of conservation photography in the 20th century was Philip Hyde (1921-2006). In fact, it can be argued that Philip Hyde was more instrumental in this role than his two more famous counterparts, and that it was precisely for that reason that he is less known. A quiet and humble giant, living a simple life out of the spotlight, he always felt that his own art was secondary to nature’s beauty and fragility, to the environmental campaigns he participated in – more numerous and successful than any other phot... more »

The new issue of "Light It" magazine for the iPad is now available!
Lots of cool stuff in this issue (our biggest issue yet), including a feature on lighting action sports, and my "Lighting Recipes" column on mixing flash with ambient light (and a bunch more). Android version update: I wish I had more news, but I don't. We do have a beta version up and running (I posted a video of RC showing it), but it's still so buggy we can't release it. I know this is the same story you've heard for a while now, but I'm not the App developer, I'm their client, and like you I'm very anxious to get the Android version released (if for nothing more than to change the conversation from "Where's the Android version?". Believe me, when it's ready, we'll release it. For those of you with iPads, hope you enjoy the latest issue. Cheers,... more »
