Emerging From The Dark

This photo was not easy to take....It was at the end of my dive, and I had to chase these Bat Fish against the current to get to a position where I wasn't following them...not an easy task...but worth it.

Going to Work

I wanted to try out the new "vertical" look of google+ 's new layout...I usually try to post photos in landscape orientation as vertical photos always looked so small....but I think the new layout will change my outlook with that...

Surfing

Does Anyone Know?

I guess no one knows why some posts take up my entire screen while others are small...is it random? Does it change each time the home page is loaded again?

Here's an example (screen shot)....as you can see, Rafal Makieta has a few posts...one of his is HUGE, and the others small.....WHY??

Google New Format

So, with this new format, why are some photos HUGE, and others small?? Does it have to do with the size of the photo that is uploaded on the post?

I want my photos to appear LARGE on screen like some of the others...for example, +Trey Ratcliff 's last post is HUGE on my screen (along with others)...how do you do that?

The Henderson Wave

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting +Alessandro Cerè  for a photowalk in Singapore...one of the great things about G+....It is really cool to meet people in person after following each other here on the web.

Alessandro and I decided to go the "Henderson Wave" to take some night shots. A cool spot...not an easy bridge to photograph, but it was a great walk, and it was great getting to know Alessandro better...we ended the night with a nice Thai Dinner at Holland Village...

If any of you are ever in the Jakarta area, be sure to contact me...we can hook up for a walk in Jakarta...

My Leica M9 Has Failed Me

I am NOT a fan of Leica after today...so I don't have to write all again, you can read the story I just posted on my blog....long story short, the sensor has gone bad, and Leica wants SEVEN HUNDRED dollars to fix it.

WTF?? Why would a $10,000 dollar camera's sensor fail after only three years?? And why doesn't Leica replace it for free??

Singapore Aquarium

The best I can do these days with underwater shots is to visit an aquarium....and wow, what an aquarium!! It is advertised as the largest aquarium in the world, and I can see why...this is a shot of the tunnel through sharks when you exit the aquarium....

Star Performing Arts Center...Singapore

You may have noticed that I have been absent for a few weeks from G+....sorry about that...been in a battle with Cancer (bile duct cancer), but I am winning the battle, and feeling great!! I will be here in Singapore for the next 5 or 6 weeks getting chemo and radiation treatment...afterwards, I hope to be Cancer free!!

In the meantime, I have lots of time on my hands, so have been cruising the city for photos....this amazing building is just one MRT stop from the apartment I am staying....

Man By The Pier

I am back in Jakarta for another week before heading back to Singapore for 6 weeks...I had a blast processing this photo below...

For my Singapore friends, lets plan on getting together sometime next month...would love to go shooting with you...I will be free most all day and night for 6 weeks....I would like to do some kind of photo project in Singapore...up for ideas or suggestions!!

First of all.. this circle contains a bunch of my closest friends on G+. The folks that I spend the most time "with" on here.  There are a bunch of great photographers and just as importantly "good people" here.

1) Active : They have posted within the last month. With the holidays a lot of folks have slowed down but these folks are still there. Yes, I visited each stream.

2) Original These photographers are sharing mostly  "THEIR OWN WORK" and their stream is mostly photography.
 
3) Interactive : I try to find folks who are interactive and comment on their own posts and the posts of others.

Want a fun project for yourself? Choose your favorite photos from the past  year. I thought it would be easy, but man, it is HARD....be sure to choose the photos that YOU like best for YOU...that makes it much easier cause how many times have you posted a photo here on Google+ that you really like, and it gets NO Attention? Or the other way around...You post a photo that you think is only so-so, and it ends up getting rave reviews across G+? My list of photos would be different if I only used +1's and comments as my criteria for choosing....so I just chose the photos that meant something to ME...

Kawah Ijen Sulphur Miner

I posted another shot a couple of days ago of a miner at the base of the crater. Here is another shot about half-way up the side of the crater. This guy is carrying 75 kilos of Sulphur...wearing sandals. He makes it look easy. This is a tough way to make a living. The guys are only paid about US 8 cents per kilo...imagine trying to feed your family on pay like that!!

When you get out of the cities in Java, the scenery is really spectacular. This was my view hiking up the trail to the rim of Kawah Ijen. What a great way to start the day...

Kawah Ijen Crater, Indonesia

I had the opportunity to travel to this spot two weeks ago. I have always wanted to go, but it is not easy to reach. Every day, almost 400 workers trek to the bottom of this crater (Volcano) to collect sulfur, and carry, up to 85Kg of sulfur, up the steep sides of the crater for one kilometer, and then down to a weighing station another 3km to get paid. They are paid only Rp. 800 (about 8 cents) per kilo....simply amazing! I tried to lift the load myself,  but could barely get it off the ground...these guys are incredible!

Shot this with my Leica M9 and the Leica 18mm Super Elmar...

Tugu Hotel

This is a VERY cool hotel. It is located in the city of Malang...near Mount Bromo in Java, Indonesia. It is one of the most unique hotels you will ever see. If you are ever in this part of the world, be sure to give it a visit!

Happy New Year...I Am Back from Vacation

I tell ya, G+ really gets in your blood. I felt guilty not making a post here in the last week or so, and feel so out-of-touch...so, it's good to be back in town and back into the social media again...I have a lot of catching up to do...

My travels last week took me to Jogjakarta, Kawah Ijen Crater, and Mount Bromo all in East Java....took a ton of photos, and eager to share them here on G+...

Here's a shot from Prabanan in Jogja...just after this shot, the skies opened up and dumped tons of water on me....I was soaked in seconds!!

Hey fellow divers...

I am an American photographer based in Jakarta, Indonesia for the past 17 years. My passion is underwater photography. I got my original certification from the YMCA back in 1978, and started working professionally as a certified SCUBA instructor for PADI, NAUI and NASDS in 1989. Over the years, I have accumulated thousands of dives, joining the "5000+ Club" a couple of years ago. 

My first underwater camera was a used Nikonos IV that I bought in 1982 while in college. I have been hooked ever since. I currently shoot with a Nikon D800 with an Ikelite Housing, and love it.

Although I have been diving all around the world, my favorite destination is Raja Ampat, and have been there nine times since the late 90's....no reason to dive anywhere else, really....it's that good.

Finding Lost Files

Two years ago, I lost over 2TB of photos when my stupid Drobo, without warning, suddenly wiped my drives clean leaving me with nothing but corrupted files...needless to say, I am NOT a Drobo fan...

In any case, from time to time, I get emails asking for a print or a high rez file of mine that they spot on my blog. Often, it is an older photo that was lost on my Drobo, and I have to write back to tell them the file is gone forever. So last week, I get another email asking me for a print of the photo you see below. I really liked this photo, and was crushed to find out that it too was lost...but two days ago, I picked up an old USB thumb drive in my desk drawer that I had't used in years....and like magic....the photo was there!! Everything is Relative

I find myself at times complaining about the trivial stuff in life. Traffic, having to wake up early to go to work, the cafeteria running out of the food I want, my internet connection being too slow, the game I want to watch is not on TV....blah blah blah....then I go out on a photowalk in North Jakarta, and meet a guy like this guy... sitting on an old couch next to his wood box he sleeps in under a bridge...and think, "What the hell am I complaining about??" Seriously, how lucky am I??

I walk by this scene, and the guy is busy at work sorting through plastic cups....when he sells his plastic, if he is lucky, he will earn the same amount of money that I pay to enter the toll road every morning....but he will somehow feed himself on that same amount of money. Where to Focus

Have you heard of the new Lytro Camera? Well, it is not exactly "new", but after a photo is taken with one, you can change the focus AFTER you have taken the photo...pretty amazing stuff when you think about it. I have no idea how it works, but I have seen a demo of it, and it does work!! This photo would be perfect to play around with the focus. When I was taking the photo, sometimes my camera's autofocus would concentrate on the glass fish in front of the Sweet Lips, and sometimes it would wander and then concentrate on the Sweet Lips...the shots where the Sweet Lips were in focus looked strange as there were all of these blurry spots (the glass fish) in front of the frame. So, I prefer the shots where the glass fish in front are in focus, and you can see the Sweet Lips in the background...

Google+ Versus 500px

In this day in age as a professional photographer, having a blog is just not enough. If you only have a blog, you will most likely never have your work seen by anyone other than your friends or family. Photographers making money these days have a "web presence"....they have a blog, a portfolio website, maybe another website for their business (weddings, commercial, portraits, etc), they are active on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and other social media...maybe they have a site on Smugmug, Flickr, Pbase, Tumblr, you name it....Look at guys like +Trey Ratcliff ....he has his stuff all over the place, and if anyone knows how to get your stuff seen, it would be Trey...he is the master...his web presence is something we all aspire to have!

Nudibranch and Eggs

I usually prefer wide angle underwater, but every once in a while, I strap on the 60mm for some Macro. This is one of the several hundred varieties of Nudibranch you can find in Indonesia...that "blue sack" are its eggs...
