In 2001: A Space Odyssey, the ship’s sentient computer HAL 9000 goes mad and murders all crew members, save David “Dave” Bowman. He then proceeds to HAL’s central core and starts disconnecting its memory modules, triggering memories from HAL’s early days. The computer asks id Dave would like to hear a song, something he confirms. HAL starts singing Daisy Bell, composed by Harry Dacre in 1892.

But why did HAL 9000 sing this song? Why did the filmmakers select this particular piece for a science fiction movie? Because it was nice? Maybe because it was popular?

Portraits of 4 sisters every year for 36 years, 1975 – 2010

In 1975, photographer Nicholas Nixon took a picture of his wife and her 3 sisters, who at the time ranged in age from 15 to 25. Then he did it again the next year and suggested that they make it an annual tradition. The women agreed and they have all consistently been a part of the remarkable project now for going on 40 years.

Dan Ouellette is a friend of mine from way back in film school. Since then he's become an amazing fine artist.  His surrealist pencil drawings sell for ungodly amounts and are sought after by art collectors all over the world.  And they are really, really creepy! :-)

Now he's trying to publish a book of some of his work and I want one!  He's struggling on Kickstarter and the project is in danger of not reaching it's goal. There are only six days left!  If you like really creepy art like I do, check out his Kickstarter and contribute!

A great little article about a very short interview Arthur C. Clarke gave in 1974, where he predicted the world of 2001: "when he grows up... he will have in his own house, not a computer as big as this, but at least a console through which he can talk to his friendly local computer and get all the info he needs for his everyday life: his bank statements, his theater reservations, all the information you need over the course of living in a complex modern society." He goes on to talk about the possibilities of telecommuting, instant global communication, and so on. Clarke's ability to understand the consequences of computers was really extraordinary, in an era where even most science fiction writers didn't really get it.

Last month, Tyler posted naked images of herself online, with the words "I own my body; it's not the source of anyone's honor" written on her bare chest. The head of Tunisia's "Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice," reportedly called for Tyler to be stoned to death for her putatively obscene actions, lest they lead to an epidemic. Legendary Silver Age comics creator Carmine Infantino has died.

Infantino, born in Brooklyn, New York on May 24,1925, was a major force in the creation of the Silver Age of comic books. His work in the ’50s and ’60s included the co-creation of numerous characters, most notably the Silver Age Flash, Barry Allen. He was also key in reimagining Batman for DC, and co-created Human Target, which became a short-lived FOX television series.

The new, darker Batman in the post TV show 70's was my favorite growing up.  Sad.

Patrick Stewart is getting married soon and Ian McKellen will serve as the officiant. Think about it, Captain Picard’s officiant will be Gandalf. Or perhaps it’s Magneto will be Professor Xavier’s officiant. Then again, maybe it’s Death marrying Gurney Halleck. Any way you slice it, it’s awesome that McKellen, Stewart’s longtime friend, colleague and occasional co-star, will be the man who officiates the wedding between Stewart and his jazz singer fiancée Sunny Ozell.
