I see all manner of shared circles here on Google+ and I've incorporated a fair number of them into my own daily or weekly round of viewing.
But I don't always see a lot of the kind of work that I really enjoy viewing. That may well be because of the difficulty in describing it, for it varies, and does not easily fit a mold. It is photographic work that is sometimes edgy, or gritty, or odd, or banal to the point of being surreal, or unique without being flashy or gimmicky, or just possessed of a consistent, subtle something extra that makes the work, and the photographer, stand out. Or, for lack of a better word -- the work of singular photographers.
Don't get me wrong. There are many excellent photographers on Google+, some with thousands of followers, some with far less than they deserve. Great landscape photographers, accomplished and experienced HDR practitioners, superb wildlife, and portrait, and fashion photographers.
One can teach, and learn, certain lighting techniques for commercial and fashion photography. HDR techniques can be taught, and the student can produce a fairly competent looking result provided they have the right scene, subject, and possess a working knowledge of compositional elements. The same could be said for landscapes, wildlife, and long exposures. (And, of course, there are veritable legions of Photoshop seminars that one can attend.) This is not to belittle any of these genres. An accomplished photographer must still have a unique vision and style, no matter the genre in which they work. And someone without vision will not achieve results beyond a certain technically proficient level if they lack what we often term a good "eye".
But most of the photographers I include (or will include) in this circle produce work of a nature that is not easily taught, even in a technical sense. +Susan Burnstine, for example, diplays a strong singular vision in conjunction with custom homemade lenses. You don't "get" her effects in Photoshop. You won't find the January issue of Popular Photography offering a How To article on "The Susan Burnstine Look". One would be hard pressed to "teach" what she does. In this sense, to further refine what I mean by "singular", Susan Burnstine, and others in this circle, serve as inspirations. And for those photographers interested in exploring their own paths, inspiration is primarily what the photographers in this circle have to offer. I do not want to imitate +Susan Burnstine, or +Vangelis Bagiatis or +Hengki Koentjoro , but I find them unique, thoughtful, singular in their styles, and very inspirational in terms of pushing the photographic envelope. (This preamble has gone on long enough, but I wanted to make clear that I am aware -- as I am sure the photographers included in this circle are aware -- that there is nothing new under the sun. Echoes and elements of their work can be found in the images of photographers who predate them by a century.)
Some of the photographers I include may not, at first glance, appear to possess the same singularity of approach as some of the other
