Henry A. Otero (Hanko9)131,107*#Spartacus : War Of The Damned* Gaius Claudius Glaber is dead. Many months have passed since his defeat, and the rebel army, led by Spartacus and his generals Crixus, Gannicus and Agron, continue to amass victories over Rome. With the rebel numbers swelling to thousands of freed slaves, it has become a force that has started to challenge even the mighty armies of Rome. Spartacus is more determined than ever to bring down the entire Roman Republic. Following the death of Ashur, Naevia and Crixus fight as one with newfound strength and determination. And Gannicus, always seeking to embrace life to the fullest, shares his bed with the beautiful and dangerous Saxa. Together, the rebels engage in one bloody skirmish after another and prepare for the inevitable: a full out war with Rome. The Roman Senate turns to its wealthiest citizen, Marcus Crassus, for aid. A powerful, strategic politician, he respects his opponent and refuses to make the same mistakes Glaber and his predecessors have. With a young and fiercely competitive Julius Caesar as an ally, Crassus is determined to crush Spartacus and his rebellion. The epic conclusion of a legendary journey, Spartacus: War of the Damned will unleash a battle unlike anything ever seen before.Spartacus: War of the Damned [Season Premiere]2013-01-26 03:00:00142

The new TeslaCrypt ransomware is targeting game files and photos in addition to the normal business files. I recommend selecting a backup solution that keeps multiple iterations of files to be safe.

I saw the premiere of The Last Dragon as part of an extremely hyped radio promotion.   I liked the soundtrack, Vanity was easy on the eyes but I didn't appreciate the camp until I finally watched it on video.  Once I saw it on the small screen, I embraced all that made it fun and corny.  I have since watched it numerous times including with my son who now enjoys it as much as I.

Great to see the creativity of these students. These are the upcoming users of enterprise systems and their expectations of use are going to be very different.

Hacking the Future Internet of Things

Last week a team at Stanford University hosted TreeHacks, the first large hackathon at Stanford.  I had the pleasure of helping one of my students, Russell Kaplan make it happen.  It was held on campus and kicked off on Friday evening with final awards occurring on Sunday afternoon.  In between over a hundred teams wrote a lot of software and built a lot of hardware. They had a lot of interest in the hackathon with over 2500 students applying. In the end there were over 600 hackers, roughly half were Stanford students, and the other half were composed of 250 from rest of California and 100 from out of state.  I met students from Northwestern, Cal, MIT, UVA, UT Austin and one from Tokyo. The organizers wanted to make sure the hackathon wasn’t just a young boys club and in the end out of the eight members in the top three teams, three were women.  I walked away with a couple of observations:

Cost and type of technology.  While not all hackathons might be like this, there were lots of hardware technologies to play with including Arduinos, Raspberry PIs, Neutrons, Oculus Rifts, DC motors, cameras and drones. And there was lots of software and data technology including Bloomberg giving access to their databases and DirecTV providing APIs to their set top boxes.  Of course every participant brought laptops with access to theirs and others Github repositories.  As a side note I don't think there was any usage of classic enterprise software or hardware. If you time shifted this hackathon by 20 years we were looking at millions of dollars worth of software and hardware, and a computer room on campus with hundreds of servers and at least a staff of ten people. .

Horizontal technology, Vertical answers.  Given all of these horizontal technologies the hackers were all creating vertical experiments, in many cases assembling multiple horizontal technologies to create innovative applications.  One of the teams, Wake, integrated wearable technology with your environment so when you fall asleep, the app pauses your DirecTV, and then uses SmartThings to turn the lights off and lock your door. MetroArm, created by students from Purdue University and the University of Waterloo, won first prize for a robotic arm controlled by a Leap Motion controller. Leap Motion is a device that tracks the motion of its user’s hands and fingers and translates them into computer input.  The judges were impressed that in only thirty-six hours these two students could build such a complex application.

Creativity.  Many of the participants arrived with no idea what they would do, or who would be in their team.  One team I met, had met at SFO on Friday afternoon.  So it’s even more incredible the degree of creativity.  The crowd favorite was MAKKMat, a smart mat that detects various exercises, such as planks and push-ups, and sends the repetition and activity data to the user’s phone. And the second place team was Fabric, a team that included participants from Stanford, University of Rochester and Princeton University.  Their hack used a Leap Motion device alongside an Oculus Rift headset to create an interface for designing and manipulating objects for 3D printing.  Many of the hackers had no experience with hardware things having previously worked on only web or mobile apps. This should bode well for the coming Internet of Things.

For those of you in healthcare, transportation, oil & gas, financial services, agriculture, manufacturing, retail, government how will you harness these new software, hardware and data technologies to build innovative new applications?  And for those of you building infrastructure hardware and software focusing on the developer might not be a new idea to anyone who grew up at Apple, Microsoft or Oracle, but it’s clear it’s never been more important.___Great to see the creativity of these students. These are the upcoming users of enterprise systems and their expectations of use are going to be very different.

This is very consistent to what I have found during my travels to China.

Chinese are more educated than Americans, have increasing disposable income, billionaires, 600 million internet users and rapid growth, many huge IPOs, internet companies with massive user numbers, e-commerce sites like Taobao that did more sales on "Singles Day" than all US e-commerce sites combined did on "Cyber Monday", companies like JD that do 3-hour delivery, Alipay that is more useful than Paypal that you can use to pay for cabs, Weibo which is like Twitter but bigger, WeChat which replaces phone, email, and text messaging, Didi which is like Uber but you can leave voice messages for your driver, MoMo which lets you talk to strangers nearby (like for dating), and 91 which is a 3rd-party app store.___This is very consistent to what I have found during my travels to China.

Worthwhile reading for everyone. Please be aware of your surroundings.

Shared by one of our contacts on Facebook, Navarrete Legal , allegedly written by a female cop.

"In daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things to do in an emergency situation... This is for you, and for you to share with your wife, your children, & everyone you know.
After reading these 9 crucial tips, forward them to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do :The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

2. Learned this from a tourist guide. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse,
DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you... Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse.
RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy.. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR , LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE..

If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, Repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
A.) Be aware:look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor , and in the back seat.
B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side.. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!)

7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN!
The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!

8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked 'for help' into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird.. The police told her 'Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door..' The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, 'We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.' He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby.. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night.

10. Water scam! If you wake up in the middle of the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a burst pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all your outside taps full blast so that you will go out to investigate and then attack.
Stay alert, keep safe, and look out for your neighbors! Please pass this on.
This e-mail should probably be taken seriously because the Crying Baby Theory was mentioned on America 's Most Wanted when they profiled the serial killer in Louisiana."

This is the best analogy of the day...it's why users refuse to shut down...and then wonder why things  stop working after weeks of operation.

Getting MS Windows to shut down is like telling a tweenager to go to bed.
"Shut Down"
"I am shutting down. See?"
long pause
"I thought you were shutting down?"
"I am . I just need to do something first..."
another long pause
"What the heck are you doing? All I want you to do is shut down! I've already saved my files, all you need to do is STOP doing whatever it is you're doing! Can't you just stop?"
"Hey, I'm shutting down as fast as I can. Wait...did you want this to stay open? I need to check something..."
"For goodness sakes! PLEASE! Just shut down NOW!"
"I told you! I AM shutting down! Sheesh, some people..."
another pause
"Are you done yet?"
"Done with what?"
"Shutting down. I told you to shut down, but the window is still open."
"Oh, that."
"Yes, that. I said "close." I hit the big red X in the upper right corner. What more do you want from me?"
"Did you do BOTH? You used "close" and you hit the X? No wonder I'm confused..."
"Why are you confused!?! I...just...want...you...to...shut...down....cease...desist...stop whatever you're doing..."
"But, I...don't you want me anymore?"
"NO! I WANT TO GO TO BED! NOW SHUT DOWN BEFORE I TOTALLY LOSE IT!"
"Hey, lady, that train has already left the station..."___This is the best analogy of the day...it's why users refuse to shut down...and then wonder why things  stop working after weeks of operation.

My friend +Jessica Wood posted a great Family Feud clip today, but I wanted everyone to see the funniest one I have ever seen.  I saw this on TV when it originally aired and immediately DVR'd it because I was in shock at the answers.

I promise you will laugh, shake your head and enjoy Steve Harvey's reaction to this very interesting family.

"Every so often, usually in the vast deserts of the American Southwest, a hiker or a backpacker will run across something puzzling: a ginormous concrete arrow, as much as seventy feet in length, just sitting in the middle of scrub-covered nowhere. Dim Sum is one of my favorite meals ever.  While I have enjoyed great Dim Sum in Shanghai, the best I have ever had was in Hsinchu Taiwan.  I have also been impressed with a few places in San Fran as well.  If you don't know...now you know.  Enjoy.   #dimsum   #yummyfood

The ultimate guide to eating Dim Sum in Hong Kong, China and abroad

What is Dim Sum?

Dim Sum is bite sized portions of Cantonese food served on tiny plates or in steamer baskets.

Traditionally, dim sum is wielded around in carts – pushed from table to table – where customers can select their order from the comfort of their own table; however, these days in Hong Kong, space is at a premium and unless you’re dining at a banquet hall style restaurant, you’re most likely to place your order on an slip of paper where you select your food items on a checklist.

A moment of silence for a great culinary fixture in Chicago.  I have a fuzzy blackberry picture of the two of us holding a $40k bottle of wine.  He thought it was a fun picture, I was petrified I'd drop it and have to sell possessions to pay the bill.

You will be missed sir!  #Chef

The culinary world lost a giant today. Chicago's Chef Charlie Trotter died this morning at the age of 54. He will be missed by the many he inspired.

Why NBC?  Thank goodness for DVR's, otherwise it would be even harder for great shows like this to gain traction with the way networks bounce scheduling, although it feels like NBC does this more than most.

BB needs to leapfrog competition at this point to regain consumer and/or corporate interest.  At this point, they may want to emphasize the back end where there may still be differentiation.

Although today's event in Boston is heartbreaking, I am always amazed with how the human condition allows us to rally towards supporting each other through tragedies.  It is inspiring to see the number of people helping each other.

Cell lines are congested in Boston the following may help you find someone if needed.  Blessings to all.
