Impending
I heard that the new interface was very friendly for vertical images, so I was hoping to share some more work from my recent adventure in the southwest.
This was taken on our evening visit to South Coyote Buttes in the Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness. This place is absolutely wild - not just for the remote aspect, but the colors and features within the sandstone. I cannot wait to return to this area and explore additional areas!

Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument, Utah
A mix of warm and cool light in the Zebra Slot of Escalante- Grand Staircase National Monument, Utah. This was by far one of my very favorite places that +Colby Brown and I visited during our exploration of this amazing place. Three shots taken at f/11 and blended for depth of field.

"Blown Away"
First image from another fantastic night out. This was the scene near Bow Summit this morning at around 3:45. The Milky Way seemed to emerge directly from Crowfoot Mountain. I already miss the northern reaches of Banff National Park!
Note: I really don't endorse lying in the middle of the road for photos. I had not seen another vehicle for hours and it seemed like an OK thing to do...

Evening at Stud Horse
Lake Powell area, Arizona
I've been itching to share some of the stuff from the recent southwest tour with +Colby Brown +Casey McCallister and the infamous +Michael Bonocore ... man I have a TON of files to archive, key word, and sort but I've let a little bit my impatient side get the better of me :)
Mike, Casey and I took out on the adventure to find this locale in hopes of lingering clouds over Page would go boom with color. The conditions were right, but just too much stuff blocking the horizon to the west. I was really eager to check out some of these unique hoodoo formations and hope for something epic.
Regardless of the conditions fizzling on us, it was very cool to check out and we had a blast venturing out on the power line cut and dealing with stubborn cattle.
Thanks to +Brady Beck for letting me borrow... more »

Spent yesterday in Canyon X with +Colby Brown, +Casey McCallister, and +Michael Bonocore photographing some amazing light. Our 10 day tour of Escalante and northern Arizona is almost complete and I have a boat load of images to sort and begin working on when I return to the east coast.
Thanks to Overland Canyon Tours for their top notch guide service (Ask for Chris!) for showing us what Canyon X had to offer.
Here's a quick iPhone pic from our time shooting there yesterday.

Yesterday +Peyton Hale and I set off to explore the hidden gems of Paria Canyon. We hiked in for roughly 4 miles before turning around so that we could make sunset out in the White Pocket area of Vermillion Cliffs National Monument in northern Arizona.
We are here for another day and then it is off to Page, AZ for some fun in Antelope Canyon and Canyon X. Looks like we should have solid sunset weather for Stud Horse Point and Horseshoe Bend as well. We have a jam packed 4 days left...

I'm still alive....
Work, job searching, planning a move, and life in general has consumed much of my time right now, leaving little for photography and even processing.
Fortunately I still have a few odds and ends to work on, plus I'm getting geared up for 9 days in southern Utah and northern Arizona next month.
In the meantime, here's a little something for today and tomorrow!

Desert Light
A giant thirst is a great joy when quenched in time.
-- Edward Abbey
I'm holed up in my apartment fighting off what seems to be a bad cold or maybe even the flu... Hard to focus on doing work at home so I figured I'd share something I had been working on from the archives.
This was a scene captured in Death Valley National Park back in February 2012 during our visit there as the sun started creeping into the to the northeast of Badwater Basin. The mixed light on the hillside was wonderful, so a quick stop and a short walk was in order.

Well, it's official....
We're moving to Pullman, Washington! This summer we pack up and head west as my lovely girlfriend Kaitlyn has accepted an academic internship at Washington State University. We'll be heading out in June so I can do some job shopping and my plans are to arrive in the area in mid July.
I'm so stoked to get out and explore all the photographic potential that will surround me as well as the opportunity to meet many of the great Pacific Northwest nature photographers!

Google+ Is Now the #2 Largest Social Network In The World
A recent report by Global Web Index has revealed that +Google+ has now surpassed Twitter in active users!
This quick graphic I created only shows the numbers for Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, although Technically +YouTube was considered #3 and Twitter came in at #4.
If anyone has yet to see the value in Google+ as a platform to build an audience for their business or brand, they seriously need to re-think some things.

Hawk Hill Sunrise - 145 megapixels
To see the whole thing in your browser go to: http://gigapan.com/gigapans/121425
(The version you see in this post is only 4000 pixels wide)
I took this yesterday morning while I was out walking around in the hills. With the light changing so fast, it is not easy to get all the frames necessary without working quickly and efficiently. I am practicing though - and getting better each time. This is shot with a 70-200 lens and an Induro tripod and head (along with my trusty bubble level).

Shattered
An intimate abstract from a late evening romp from parking area 2 of Valley of Fire State Park near Overton, Nevada. This caught my eye because to me it showcases both the beauty and fragility of this landscape. These scattered shards of sandstone fins swept down the slope, resting amidst the banding of the rock.
I have been so busy with other aspects of life pre and post holiday hoopla that it has been tough to contribute, but I am still around :) I'm gearing up for a short trip back to the South Carolina lowcountry with +Colby Brown then eagerly awaiting an upcoming southwest adventure in the spring.
I'll be taking a siesta from traveling at that time until I know for certain when and where I'll be packing my bags and shuffling to my new residence. Hopefully I'll be bound for the west coast and I can partake in all this epic imagery I see ... more »

2012 - What an awesome ride
2012 has been a spectacular year for me as a photographer and in personal growth. It has been filled with great opportunity along the way and as well the closing of doors... but this is all part of the path we walk in life, facing challenges along the way and overcoming obstacles. Our greatest gifts in life are the ability to learn from the mistakes we've made as well as being tested to reveal what we are capable of accomplishing.
So rather than reflect on the year's experiences and imagery I want to say thank you to all of the people that I have either met this year or to those friends and colleagues who continue to influence me, challenge me, and support me in all I have done. And thank you to all of those that have been influential in supporting what I do, although I am my biggest critic the positive reinforcement that I influence and ... more »

Zion - Sunrise at the Court of Patriarchs
Words can't really describe what a great time I had on my recent adventures last month. It started with attending +Colby Brown and +Peyton Hale workshop at Zion, several trips and hikes to nearby locals such as the Valley of Fire, and ending a long three weeks with a trip to Disney and Florida with the family. As much as I love and do plan to see more of the world in the coming months and years I don't think I could live the life of a pure travel photographer like +Elia Locardi - I get home sick after a couple weeks lol .
I'm really busy both with my day job and more importantly with another project of mine, much closer to my love of photography, that I'll actually be announcing a bit about later today but this weekend I decided to set aside a couple hours and go for some low hanging fruit in my unprocessed pile ... more »

Lowcountry Fireworks
Coastal South Carolina
as a tribute to what has been an incredible year for me, especially from a photographic standpoint, here's one I hadn't shared from my jaunt into the South Carolina lowcountry this past January. This area from the South Carolina coast is quite amazing and I was given the opportunity to photograph one of the best sunrise displays I've ever seen documented from this location.
I'm excited to be heading back this January with +Colby Brown , +Casey McCallister , and hopefully +Joe Azure in tow for a few solid days of shooting.

Windstone Arch
Valley of Fire, Nevada
I've begun pecking away at editing images from my efforts shooting to follow up the four day Zion National Park workshop helping +Colby Brown lead a wonderful group of participants to a variety of locations within one of the most incredible national parks within the NPS contingency. It was an incredibly busy time of year for visitors and workshops, but as +Brian Rueb has stated, that's a topic all in itself!
I'm saving all the goodies for later, so in the meantime I'll share an image from my last morning out west. I got up early and trekked out to a nondescript location in the red rock outcroppings of Valley of Fire State Park in the desert of Nevada to a notable formation made famous by the legendary David Muench. Windstone Arch is a classic symbol of the southwest, but increased traffic in park attendance seems to... more »

Mount Rainier is the highest peak in the Cascade Range, a long range of volcanic mountains that stretches from Washington through Oregon to northern California. Its considered an active volcano, with its last eruption in 1894. Rainier erupted over a dozen times in the last 2,600 years, with the largest eruption 2,200 years ago.
I took this shot from reflection lake, which has some of the most iconic views of Mt. Rainier in the park. Summer and fall, sunrise and sunset, it is perhaps the single-most photographed view for both budding and experienced photographers, who return again and again.
