Massive network outage at work. All of our external network links are down. How level 3 and century link can simultaneously die when physically separate and going physically in different directions speaks to a much larger issue in the area. :(

Nnnnahhannrr! Bloody hell. so, I've been trying to track down a network problem. it seems that every tiem it happens, the router goes braindead and resets. It specifically resets all logs and the log file starts on april 6th. Which is odd.
However, I have managed to get my old OSX box set up to accept syslog settings. But even that was a chore. Some old application bugs had the logs flooded with errors about domain controler settings. For some reason, this old 10.6 box thought it had been joined at some point to a ActiveDirectory domain then broken from the domain. So the log was just full of this:

I am currently eating dinner, a dinner made from two awesome local tastes here in #denver . One, is +Polidori Sausage . In this case, bratwurst. The other is Spinelli's Vodka cream sauce. Both very low carb, which is good because I happen to be on a low carb diet!

So, some time ago I purchased a Pittsburgh socket set at +Harbor Freight Tools. I've had good luck with their stuff time and time again until this last weekend.
I crawled under my car to drain my coolant and do my thermostat. the drain plug is a 10mm hex bolt capped plug. I took the 10mm socket from my kit, fit it on the extension rod and... no fit. It was too small. So, I grabbed my 10mm box wrench, and tested.... perfect fit! The same was true for the two bolts holding the water inlet in place.
Upon closer inspection, I found that the 10mm socket was quite litterally a few micrometers smaller than the box wrench. I have never, ever run into a case where a tool of a specified size was smaller than it's stated size.
So... end result is that it's now snowing so I won't be able to do the work until next weekend. Awesome. :(

I have been having to recover my mother's computer this week. her hard drive died. I have been telling her to buy a backup drive for years. Has she? newp! This is a typical exchange between us.
M:"I'm computer illiterate, that's why i pushed the button."
J: "But I told you /not/ to push the button, and I do this for a living."
M: "but I don't know what to do!"
J: "I'm telling you what to do! Stop being so thick!"

So, we got a new car for the house this week. An Acura Legend. Nice car, actually. the LS model. Problem is, it's got a blown master cylinder. The brakes are broke. So, I hit up a local part'n'pull and found 3! One of them was in OK shape, one was trashed, and one... was beautiful. Totally pristine. So, I go for the pristine one. I set my wrench on the bolts and... turn. strange, that felt soft. Like... yup. The nut instantly wore smooth. From perfect, to rounded off in one turn of a wrench. Tried the other shiny brass bolt and... buttery soft squish. Both bolts just melted under my steel wrench.
ARGH!
Had to settle for the OK one. the OK one had rusty bolts, but they came right off. Nice bolts, why you no stay hard?

An observation. A friend of mine was lamenting that when they kicked someone's ass into gear over a matter of harassment, they were themselves blasted for not being 'gentle' about it. They had the gall to take action instead of coddling this person and re-enforcing their view they should hide from the conflict instead of standing up to it.
The problem is two fold.
One, belief. For example; if you speak to any deeply religious person and present them with logical evidence that their beliefs may be wrong, they will often react poorly and irrationally. Sometimes, it even grows violent. This same reaction happens with societal norms of all types.
Two, everything has to be gentle. These days, society promotes 'understanding'. Understanding is great, when it's actual understanding. Sadly, the understanding that is promoted is just a catch all for ... more »

Hey +Seán Murphy. Funny story. So we have a lot of rabbits that live around our property. We usually only see a few at a time here and there. Last night however...
+Katherine Sularz stepped outside with the garbage and the motion detector light came on. In the yard was an army of rabbits. All of them turned and stared. All of them. They followed her as she walked to the garbage bins and back, staring the whole way.

ok, so...
My post a bit ago about cooling? I'm starting to rethink things about the hardware I chose. AMD's chips are a hell of a lot cheaper than Intel's, and I'm starting to ponder if their latest and greatest A series or even an FX chip might be a better buy with a discreet graphics card involved.
Opinions?

Hello plussers! I have a question to level at you all. Water cooling related at that.
I'm designing a new system for my lovely +Katherine Sularz, who's computer, like mine, was built in 2008 from parts that were already on the way out (core 2 duo).
I already have the CPU, board, RAM, and case picked out. My question, instead, has to do with cooling. I have had expensive air fans and heat sinks for ages. They are slowly but surely becoming less effective. Add to that that the environment of my home is rather dusty, I'd rather have a higher efficiency cooler.
To that end, water cooling is the way we're going. My big issue though... Do I get a per-assembled cooler, like the Thermaltake or even the Intel branded closed loop CPU coolers? Or do I build my own system from parts?
