Hands week 3: Illustrations over photography Truly design

Truly design about this art:
This series consists of black and white photographic portraits printed on canvas and integrated by handmade drawings. Our project starts from photographic portraits, aspect of the project realized with photographer Irene Ritorto.
Expression of material reality, the portrait is completed by allegorical illustrations through which our art becomes an instrument apt for digging even deeper in the person's soul. Research within the subconscious and the mysteries of the mind is faced on our canvasses like an analysis on the shrink's couch, generating a diagnosis in itself cryptically enclosed within symbologies and metaphors made concrete by the artist in his most instinctive and sincere fashion.
Each one of us portrayed a friend, his own hands (in which we see the future we wish... more »

Hands week 1: Henna-Painted Hands

I've always been fascinated by hands. Why? Possibly because I really needed them as a physiotherapist. Possibly because it is the part of man that is very crucial for the development of man. Possibly because I find it amazing what people can do with their hands. This photo is hanging on the wall, among other photo's with hands, in the room where a used to work as a physiotherapist.

Text with this photo on National Geografic: Beyond providing armor, insulation, and air-conditioning, skin has long served as a canvas for cultural expression. Here, a woman in Srinagar, Kashmir, displays her henna-painted hands, illustrating one of skin's greatest roles: human canvas for the artistic and the spiritual. (Photograph by Paule Seux)

Testing my my new phone: Samsung Galaxy Note 2

My dear old Samsung nexus S started to get more and more problems. It was a dear friend for more than two years. We had to say goodbye :-(

I replaced it with a Samsung Galaxy Note Two. We're just getting to know each other. I've been taking some test photos with it in standard mode (It has a macro mode, but I hadn't found it yet).

This is one of the photo's I made. I'm amazed by the quality of the photo. I'm very curious how it will be with the macro mode on! The Note needs some getting used to, but the camera in it ........ wow!

Poster Art 1.: Charlie Chaplin movies

Film posters:
A film poster is a poster used to advertise a film. Studios often print several posters that vary in size and content for various domestic and international markets. They normally contain an image with text. Today's posters often feature photographs of the main actors. Prior to the 1990s, illustrations instead of photos were far more common. The text on film posters usually contains the film title in large lettering and often the names of the main actors. It may also include a tag line, the name of the director, names of characters, the release date, etc.
Film posters are displayed inside and on the outside of movie theaters, and elsewhere on the street or in shops. The same images appear in the film exhibitor's pressbook and may also be used on websites, DVD (and historically VHS) packaging, flyers,... more »

Melancholy week 5.: Venom and Tears by Fresh Doodle - JP Valderrama

Striking image. Beautiful!

JP Valderrama about himself:
Arts and drawing has always been my passion, it's the only thing I do best most of the time. I've been drawing way back since I was old enough to hold a pencil, all the way from high school, to my college years. 5 years ago, I've stopped temporarily and pursued a career in web and graphic design. Fairly a year ago I have picked up my pen tablet and started drawing again, but this time it's for good!

I consider myself multi-talented and very fortunate about it. Aside from art, I'm also musically
inclined, I play guitar and bass and listen to different forms of rock music. I'm also athletic and play ridiculous hours of tennis. If I'm not drawing, I'd be playing tennis. I consider myself a semi... more »

A photo I made today. There were several families in the ponds behind our school. There is only one white goose. Her "husband" is a greylag Goose. He wasn't around. I don't think that is a good sign. He's probably dead. Mum was doing a good job on her own.

Melancholy week 3.: Beautiful paintings by Victor Wang!

Paintings I really love! The atmosphere, the colors and beauty of the women that are displayed. Magnificent!

Artist Statement
My path through life has been adventurous, exciting, and dream-like. My experience of settling into America in search of better opportunities has been both challenging and inspiring. I use the human face as a vehicle to paint human experiences - worry and wonder, sadness and pleasure - which reflect the emotional stage directly tied to my immigration experiences.

I grew up amongst the sunflower fields in northern China. In my childhood years, I played under the bright, yellow sunflowers with my brothers everyday. China’s Cultural Revolution played an important part in my life. During that time, sunflowers were used as political allegories to depict how citizens of Chinas... more »

Melancholy week 1.: Melancholy

A painting by Edgar Degas made in 1874. Style: impressionism.

About impressionism: (wikipedia)
Impressionism is a 19th-century art movement that originated with a group of Paris-based artists. Their independent exhibitions brought them to prominence during the 1870s and 1880s, in spite of harsh opposition from the conventional art community in France. The name of the style derives from the title of a Claude Monet work, Impression, soleil levant (Impression, Sunrise), which provoked the critic Louis Leroy to coin the term in a satirical review published in the Parisian newspaper Le Charivari.

Impressionist painting characteristics include relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time),... more »

When masters practice

The great masters wouldn't have been as good they were without exercise. Often they first made a test drawing before they started a large painting. Practice makes perfect, so ........

In this album you can find exercise pieces of various great masters, for example: Leonardo Da Vinci, Peter Paul Rubens, Rapfael, etc.

All his only practice pieces, they are truly wonderful. Proof af a great artist!

Iceland week 3.: Paintings by Johannes Sveinsson Kjarval

All nature is a single symphony, all of it music.
You are so receptive to music out in the lava field.

                                Johannes Sveinsson Kjarval 1954

Johannes Sveinsson Kjarval (15 October 1885 – 13 April 1972) was an Icelandic painter. He is by many considered one of the most important artists of Iceland. Born in poverty, he was adopted and as a young man worked as a fisherman. However, he spent every spare time drawing and painting and managed to learn basics from artist Asgrimur Jonsson. At age 27 with financial support from fishermen and the Icelandic Confederation of Labour he passed an entrance examination and was admitted to the Royal Danish Art Academy for higher education in the arts where he completed his studies. Iceland week 1.: The Land of Giants by Choi & Shine Architects

The natural regions in Iceland are still so untouched in comparison to many of the great areas of the world. Though they have all of the modern conveniences of life and plenty of great architecture– there seems to be a few that would alter the way the electricity in the country is carried. In order to add to the beauty of the already flawless landscape, Choi & Shine Architects came up with a creative idea.Making electrical towers and lines beautiful isn’t ordinarily deemed as something that can be fixed through design, but Choi + Shine proved that it is indeed possible. Though the competition’s main objective was to create a new aesthetic for the towers, there was an additional hope for less stress on the environment and a lower carbon footprint. Certainly an amazing execution in revising the standard towers wesee t... more »

The Night Watch or The Shooting Company of Frans Banning Cocq (Dutch: De Nachtwacht) is the common name of one of the most famous works by Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn.

I chose a few to post here, but there are many many more te be seen in the museum and on the website of the museum: www.rijksmuseum.nl

About Hendrik Golzius
Hendrik Goltzius (January or February 1558 – January 1, 1617), was a Dutch printmaker, draftsman, and painter. He was the leading Dutch engraver of the early Baroque period, or Northern Mannerism, noted for his sophisticated technique and the "exuberance" of his compositions. According to A. Hyatt Mayor, Goltzius "was the last professional engraver who drew with the authority of a good painter and the last who invented many pictures forothe... more »

Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Week 1: Our Heroes are Back!

This Flashmob recreates Rembrandt's Night Watch. It's considered one of the most famous paintings in the world.

The slogan 'Our Heroes are Back' is used to announce that, after an absence of one decade, all major pieces in the Rijksmuseum's collection are back where they belong. This is what happens when they suddenly emerge in an unsuspecting shopping mall somewhere in The Netherlands. With the support of main sponsor ING, entrance to the museum is free on the 13th of April from 12:00 to 00:00.

Anjas' Theme of the Week: Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (11 - 17 April)

Presenting my 43th weekly theme and it is:  *Rijksmuseum Amsterdam*

The Rijksmuseum (English: State Museum) is a Dutch national museum dedicated to arts and history in Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
The Rijksmuseum was founded in The Hague in 1800 and moved to Amsterdam in 1808, where it was first located in the Royal Palace and later in the Trippenhuis. The current main building was designed by Pierre Cuypers and was originally opened in 1885, but has been closed for renovation since 2003.

On 13 April 2013, the main building will be reopened by Queen Beatrix after the ten year renovation.

Cats week 7.: Stunning elegance of Jeff Nishinaka’s paper art!

An album with beautiful paper art. It starts with a tiger and a a peace of the The Lion King.

The stunning elegance of Jeff Nishinaka’s paper art calls for a new definition of paper. His meticulous sculptural 3D work appears to have been created from marble or extremely fine sand or vanilla ice cream or thick foam — definitely of something other than “just” paper. The Los Angeles-born artist works mainly with white, which makes the exquisite play of light and shadow a large part of the appeal of his work.

One might assume that there is very little demand for work that uses one medium and one color. Not so. Nishinaka’s work pops up everywhere in the most unexpected places, from medical illustrations of the structure of the eye, to private portrait commissions, to a life-size garden for ahotel.

Cats week 6.: "Cats" by Peter Paul Rubens

The first lions and other big cats on paintings didn't look like the real animals at all. It was obvious that the early painters had never seen a lion in their live. Rubens however paints very realistic lions. He had a very clear image of what they look like. The lions in the album cover: Daniel In The Lions Den look amazing. Daniel however has a beautifly painted body, but his face and look....

About Peter Paul Rubens:
A Flemish painter, Peter Paul Rubens’ Baroque style emphasized movement, sensuality and color. Although he was raised as a Catholic and painted Counter-Reformation pieces f or the church, he was born into a Protestant family. In 1568, his mother and father fled the Spanish Netherlands due to persecution of Protestants. Jan Rubens, Peter Paul’s father, began a sordid affair with thewoma... more »
