May 20, 1570 – Cartographer Abraham Ortelius issues Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas ... Wikipedia - ""Theatre of the World") is considered to be the first true modern atlas. Written by Abraham Ortelius and originally printed on May 20, 1570, in Antwerp, it consisted of a collection of uniform map sheets and sustaining text bound to form a book for which copper printing plates were specifically engraved. The Ortelius atlas is sometimes referred to as the summary of sixteenth-century cartography. ..." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theatrum_Orbis_Terrarum

"Scientists believe they have found the first evidence of the existence of other universes beyond our own, following analysis of the radiation left behind by the Big Bang.
Data gathered by the European Space Agency's Planck spacecraft enabled researchers to map the "cosmic microwave" of background radiation left behind when the universe began 13.8 billion years ago.
The findings imply the universe could be just one of billions, or even an infinite number, they say.
The map showed anomalies that cosmologists believe could only have been caused by the gravitational pull of other universes outside our own.
"These anomalies were caused by other universes pulling on our universe as it formed during the Big Bang," said Laura Mersini-Houghton, of the University of North Carolina.
"They are the first hard evidence for the... more »

"On May 2, 1963, hundreds of Birmingham schoolchildren marched against segregation. Images of children being hosed and intimidated by police dogs sparked national outrage. Days later, the city canceled graduation and prom for seniors at five black high schools. While graduation was reinstated, prom never was -- until this weekend.

"Gordon Parks was one of the seminal figures of twentieth century photography. A humanitarian with a deep commitment to social justice, he left behind a body of work that documents many of the most important aspects of American culture from the early 1940s up until his death in 2006, with a focus on race relations, poverty, Civil Rights, and urban life. In addition, Parks was also a celebrated composer, author, and filmmaker who interacted with many of the most prominent people of his era—from politicians and artists to celebrities and athletes.
Born into poverty and segregation in Kansas in 1912, Parks was drawn to photography as a young man when he saw images of migrant workers published in a magazine. After buying a camera at a pawnshop, he taught himself how to use it and despite his lack of professional training, he found employment with the Farm Security Administration (F.S.A.), w... more »

SIX ESSENTIAL SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY BOOKS WRITTEN BY BLACK AUTHORS
"So, how are lists full of white male authors helpful for black folks who love science fiction but are wanting to read work from black authors?
Um.
They’re not.
So, I’ve come up with a list of my own. However, since:
1.) I don’t have a lot of time to read as much as I want, and
2.) I don’t have as much time to write about reading as I want
I’m going to narrow my list down to six. An odd number, I know. Work with me. What follows will be a list of six books by Black authors that any fan of Fantasy and Science Fiction absolutely has to read. And, if you’re new to the genre, welcome aboard. These books will be some that are essential to understanding the conventions of the genre, with stories that tackle themes salient to the black experience, ... more »

"(Phys.org) —If somebody in a remote corner of the world sets fire to an American flag, but no one else is there to see it, did it really burn?
Absolutely. And thanks to social media, it will keep burning—figuratively, anyway—as news and images of the desecration fan the flames across the internet. Given the reach of today's ever-connected global society, the online outcry could quickly result in a real-world uprising. Writ large, think Arab Spring.
But could such an occurrence be prevented if we better understood—and could even predict—when, why, and how something will go viral? What if we could identify digital tipping points before they induced potentially massive chain reactions?
The answer may lie in network modeling, a way of mapping the digital landscape in order to more readily identify when a new highway is evolving—or when something, or someone, is... more »

"A little over two years ago the Fukushima Daiichi planet in Japan was crippled by a massive undersea earthquake and subsequent tsunami. As the accident unfolded there were questions about how much radiation was being released and how to determine what levels of radiation are safe. Initially, information was scarce, but one citizen science effort changed that. Safecast, a non-profit that seemed to spontaneously form following the accident, began collecting and publishing radiation readings, developing measurement tools, and analyzing data.
Safecast is an interesting example of citizen science for a number of reasons. First, Safecast is participant-driven. The group originated as an email thread among friends inquiring after their loved ones. Soon the discussions turned to ways to aggregate and then collect and distribute data. The Safecast network quickly grew and its fascinating history is... more »

"The whole Czech Republic-Chechnya social media fiasco reinforces the observation of Isabel Allende. A recent poll by National Geographic found that 47 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 could not identify India on a map, and nearly 60 percent could not find Iraq. When I say this age group could not identify these countries, I mean the respondents had no idea even where to look on a map.
It gets worse, as the same age group had difficulty identifying the states of the union on a map. Even Texas, the largest state of the lower 48, was not recognized correctly by 50 percent of the age cohort.
The 18-34 age group is not the only target of concern when it comes to geographic ignorance. National political leaders from Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush have shown their own weaknesses. Johnson’ obsession with winning in Vietnam and Bush’s premature declaration of vic... more »

"One of the loveliest things to come upon, in an open field, bathed in evening light after the rain…is the sight of two oak trees. They lean into each other like an old couple, who have weathered life"s storms. Their gnarled hands clasped in that casual, yet firm way I have long admired in that kind of enduring love. It fills me with hushed awe to think of all the things they have experienced together….the wind and the raindrops…the seasons…the sun…the stars…and all the moons that have risen…all the owls who have perched in their branches. And I realize that their mighty beauty rests in the fact that, though they grow, separately, side by side…they share the same roots."

Must have these maps!
"Maps remind me of my dreams. They remind me of the people I want to help, the places I want to see, and the impact my efforts can have on the world. I believe that every great accomplishment starts with a dream.
I made these maps for the dreamers like me. For the people that see the world not just as it is, but as it could be. For the people that yearn for new experiences and adventures. I wanted to create something that would serve as a reminder of how far your dreams could take you. I hope you enjoy and thanks for your support!"

Cinco de Mayo - an American Holiday and Celebration of Diversity
Although Cinco de Mayo originated as a celebration of the Mexican defeat of superior French forces at Puebla, Mexico, it has melded in American hearts and culture to become a true American holiday.
Here in California, one of the great "melting pots" of America, Cinco de Mayo has become a celebration of Mexican tradition and family. Today families across California will gather for fiestas, mariachi music, folklorico dancers and colorful floats. Most importantly, they will celebrate the pride and the love of their heritage and families.
To you and your familia: ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

"FREEDOM RIDERS is the powerful harrowing and ultimately inspirational story of six months in 1961 that changed America forever. From May until November 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives—and many endured savage beatings and imprisonment—for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws, the Freedom Riders met with bitter racism and mob violence along the way, sorely testing their belief in nonviolent activism.
From award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson (Wounded Knee, Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple, The Murder of Emmett Till) FREEDOM RIDERS features testimony from a fascinating cast of central characters: the Riders themselves, state and federal government officials, and journalists who witnessed the Rides firsthand. The two-hour documentary is based on Raymond Ars... more »

Feminism in the United States gained widespread traction for the first time in the 1920's. Unprecedented numbers of young women worked outside of the home, chose not to marry, determined their own standards of ethics, sexuality and beauty and indulged themselves simply because they could.
