Joshua Berg36,379On Aug 28th Google announced termination of the Authorship program, via an announcement from *John Mueller.* goo.gl/QgyUSH *[This HOA Special is TODAY, see event for local time.]* To say this came as a shock to many loyal Google authorship fans & Google+ users would be an understatement. Needless to say there are lots of questions being asked about what all this means... Why did this happen? What does it mean for authors, for SEO & ranking? What about Author Rank, or Agent Rank, are they still coming? What's going to replace authorship & what about schema.org & other markup? So on very short notice, I decided to see if we could get the experts together on this, share our thoughts & answer your questions. Amazingly within a few hours & at the end of the week, we'd reworked our schedules & planned this event. Although I'm pretty sure this panel of well known industry thought leaders don't need an introduction, I'd like to say very special thanks to them all for coming. So a warm welcome to @107022061436866576067, @113690073826160821557, @115620878851836664537, @115106448444522478339 & @102572320061138442096. All are welcome to come & bring your questions. "Google’s unfair to my site," respond those hit by penalties. "Google should remove certain negative results for a politician, a company, a person," some might think, only to have others view any meddling as some type of overt bias. For every action Google might take, there might be an equally negative reaction or repercussion. That’s why the company thinks carefully about any search policy it puts into place. In this session, Google search policy specialist Patrick Thomas looks at some of the decisions Google has to make and the careful balancing act it has to maintain. *Tune in to the Google+ Hangout On Air* here on the Search Engine Land Google+ page, or you can watch on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/searchengineland Please use the #smx hashtag to join the discussion. Google Removes Google+ Posts from Knowledge Panel

One of the perks for brands who were also active on Google+ is that their most recent post on Google+ would also be featured in the knowledge panel for their brand or company, whenever it was triggered in a regular Google search result.  Not any longer.  Google has removed all Google+ posts from being displayed on those knowledge panels.

An interesting development that I'm sure will spin up the 'death of Google+' meme once again.

No, It's Not Your Opinion. You're Just Wrong

In other words, you can form an opinion in a bubble, and for the first couple of decades of our lives we all do. However, eventually you are going to venture out into the world and find that what you thought was an informed opinion was actually just a tiny thought based on little data and your feelings. Many, many, many of your opinions will turn out to be uninformed or just flat out wrong. No, the fact that you believed it doesn’t make it any more valid or worthwhile, and nobody owes your viewpoint any respect simply because it is yours.

You can be wrong or ignorant. It will happen. Reality does not care about your feelings. Education does not exist to persecute you. The misinformed are not an ethnic minority being oppressed.

My opinion is that this post is awesome. #reason

Yahoo to Acquire Polyvore

Polyvore is a leading social shopping site that enables its users across the globe to shop their favorite products, discover new inspiration and express their style. The acquisition will accelerate Yahoo’s digital content growth strategy across the areas of social, mobile, and native.

A style acquisition before labor day? I don't know about that or whether this match is going anywhere.

Google Indexing More URLs From Websites

Have you notice an uptick in the number of URLs that Google is reporting as indexed in Google Search Console?  Well, there is a good reason for that.  Google is now indexing more URLs.

I think the response to why from +Gary Illyes is hilarious but also points to the real resource constraints involved in crawling and indexing an ever expanding corpus of URLs. What I don't think is well understood is that your index budget just went up and that means you should be thinking about how to optimize the additional index space.

Game Changing New Home Service Ad Format

Dr. Pete Meyers of Moz was one of the first to notice the new ad format on Twitter yesterday and called it a “potential game-changer” – and I can’t help but agree. This new ad format is definitely going to help local advertisers get the most out of Google by allowing them to take the top of the SERP with a rich ad format and lead capture opportunity.

If Google gets this to work and they invest in expanding to other service providers you're going to see some serious fireworks.

Baidu on Online to Offline (O2O) services

Each company has its own DNA. The Google guys are really good at hardcore technology. In order to be successful in O2O, you need that determination in operational experience. You need a large salesforce. You need to talk to those mom-and-pop shops face-to-face. You need a lot of people who are paid one tenth of a Google engineer, you need to manage that kind of workforce to do that.

So, this is the Baidu that cheated in a machine learning competition so they could claim to beat Google and now seemingly doesn't see their mapping division as 'operational experience' or even their AdWords sales team. Not to mention that they're investing in Uber but Google's actually further ahead on the self-driving car thing.

It would just be nice if the folks at Baidu would just be happy doing what they do. But it seems... more »

Everything In Its Right Place

So in the coming months, a Google Account will be all you’ll need to share content, communicate with contacts, create a YouTube channel and more, all across Google. YouTube will be one of the first products to make this change, and you can learn more on their blog. As always, your underlying Google Account won’t be searchable or followable, unlike public Google+ profiles. And for people who already created Google+ profiles but don’t plan to use Google+ itself, we’ll offer better options for managing and removing those public profiles.

The focus on interests seems like an overdue pivot for Google+ and, frankly, I never thought the idea of Circles was workable. But I'm a bit surprised to see Google essentially abandon Google+ as an identity platform.

Macbook Pro Storage Help

So I've been having some issues saving images lately, where it is taking 30 seconds of spinning ball time to finally allow me to change the file name and save.

One thing I'm trying to figure out is whether Free Space is an issue. Frankly, I'm confused because the HD seems to say I have 406 GB available but then I see this other notice that there's only 18.9 MB available.

So I appeal to those with far more knowledge than I to help me understand what's going on here.

Complete Guide to Google Tag Manager

With Google Tag Manager (GTM), marketers can take back control of their campaigns, letting GTM handle a large part of the technical side of tagging. We wrote this guide to introduce you to Tag Manager and explain how to use it successfully. Mastering Google Tag Manager means finally freeing yourself from the hassle of managing tags manually.

So this is just ... tremendous stuff from +Michael King. I probably don't know enough about GTM but ... I can if I take some time and go through this guide.

Interview with a Google Spam Fighter

Onpage optimization is a frequently underestimated field that requires technical diligence and consistency across pages and sits directly on the design concept of a website. A decent onpage optimization contributes to high usability and user satisfaction as well as traffic quality and is therefore central to every business’ online presence.

Creating a website that works well for users and search engines can be very challenging. This type of work is not going away and will remain critical in the future. Customized Content in Google Knowledge Panels

So the content that different people may see in knowledge panels may change from one to another, based upon search histories. Interesting that the patent mentions predictive results, like those found in Google Now, too.

Interesting stuff here from +Bill Slawski and a big congratulations to +Zoltán Stekkelpak and +Gyula Simonyi. The filing date makes me believe this is still a work in progress but something we'll see come to fruition sooner rather than later.

#reason

The Art of Debate

This is a rant and while I'd rather stay positive and not, I need to vent so that I don't explode.

Disagreement is fine but to just say 'I disagree' without explaining why, providing any evidence or breaking down the other person's argument just isn't productive.

Saying that you're 'smart' about such things and that your vast experience should be enough just ... isn't. I spend a fair amount of time researching topics (even those I have a deep level of knowledge about) and provide references, as much as possible, when I put something out there. I show my reasoning. I show my why.

I see no need to respond if you're not going to do that and simply snipe and say something contrary. I love a good debate, but it has to be a debate.

And I get that it can be hard. I'm in a situation with a client where I believe I know what's wrong and what they should do but I can't prove it. It's a super complex issue and there are competing theories and even some data that would point away from my theory.

So while I think I'm right, I'm not going to sit there and 'just because' my client. I continue to try and find data and ferret out how I can show the alternate way to tackle the issue but I have to show and not tell.___

A Case Study on App Download Interstitials

Based on these results, we decided to permanently retire the interstitial. We believe that the increase in users on our product makes this a net positive change, and we are sharing this with the hope that you will reconsider the use of promotional interstitials. Let’s remove friction and make the mobile web more useful and usable!

So Google decided to dogfood the App interstitial. The results mean an interstitial smack down is in our future. It's only a matter of time.

First Rich Snippets using JSON-LD Spotted in the Wild

Many webmasters have been encouraged to see these JSON-LD examples surface, but reticent to employ JSON-LD for Google rich snippet types until there's been JSON-LD-generated rich snippets spotted in the wild.

That day has arrived, thanks to the efforts of structured data veteran and cook Grace Massa Langlois. I say "and cook" because it was on her recipe-rich site that she made code modifications to see if a recipe that included schema.org/Recipe markup in – and only in – JSON-LD could successfully trigger the generation of a rich snippet in Google.

+Aaron Bradley delivers this great news but also gets an update from +Dan Brickley that essentially says to stick with microdata for nearly all of the other rich snippets.

Google Panda 4.2 Is Here

Many of you may not have noticed because this roll out is happening incredibly slowly. Google says the update can take months to fully roll out because it will slowly impact your site. The Panda algorithm is still a site-wide algorithm, but some of your web pages might not see a change immediately.

Really? Not only does this make understanding what might be impacting your site more difficult but the curious part of me wonders why exactly it's being rolled out like this.

When Algorithms Discriminate

There is a widespread belief that software and algorithms that rely on data are objective. But software is not free of human influence. Algorithms are written and maintained by people, and machine learning algorithms adjust what they do based on people’s behavior. As a result, say researchers in computer science, ethics and law, algorithms can reinforce human prejudices.

There are a lot of poor assumptions here. First is that the data is objective. If data is coming from user behavior (and a lot of it is) then the data is full of bias - the bias of users. I think the issue here is not that algorithms discriminate but that people discriminate and the algorithms hold up a mirror to that reality.

HTTPS and The Meta Referrer Tag

Typically, when one site sends traffic to another, information is sent that identifies the originating site as the source of traffic. This invaluable data allows people to see where their traffic is coming from, and helps spread the flow of information across the web.

This process stops when traffic flows from an HTTPS site to a non-secure HTTP site. In this case, no referrer data is sent. Webmasters can't know where their traffic is coming from.

Good stuff from +Cyrus Shepard. If you're at all concerned about showing the value of your site (and the traffic it delivers) to other sites, then this meta tag should probably be on your HTTPs conversion check list.

How We Changed the Facebook Friends Icon

As a result of this project, I’m on high alert for symbolism. I try to question all icons, especially those that feel the most familiar. For example, is the briefcase the best symbol for ‘work’? Which population carried briefcases and in which era? What are other ways that ‘work’ could be symbolized and what would those icons evoke for the majority of people on Earth?

There's a fair amount of equality chatter regarding this change by +Caitlin Winner but I hope that's not the only thing people take from this (though it's important).

Icons and symbolism - these 'simple' things - can be hugely powerful tools for brands and smart marketers. They are the visual equivalents of ear worms and should not be taken lightly.

How Is Google Indexing Twitter Today?

Indexation of tweets in the first 7 days increased from about 0.6% in February to 3.4% in June. That’s a whopping 466% increase, but still leaves more than 96% of Tweets out of Google’s index.

Good stuff here from the folks at +Stone Temple Consulting on the increase in indexation after Google's partnership with Twitter.

It really is surprising that more sites aren't using these very simple, yet very effective, techniques.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider Version 4.0

To get a better understanding of a website’s organic performance, it’s often useful to map on-page elements with user data and SEOs have for a long-time combined crawl data with Google Analytics in Excel, particularly for Panda and content audits. GA data is seamlessly fetched and matched to URLs in real time as you crawl, so you often see data start appearing immediately, which we hope makes the process more efficient.

+Google Analytics integration and custom extraction. Both nice features and well worth taking for a test drive (and more).

Asking for Links

This will not make me popular but I find the reaction to the advice from a Portuguese Google Webmaster blog post to be hysterical - in both senses of that word.

The line in question is that you shouldn't 'ask for links'. The sadly predictable response is a complete freak out and 'look at this shit Google's saying now' type of meme, which is seriously close to the 'thanks Obama' meme.

It's a shame people are more interested in page views and drama instead of reading comprehension and critical analysis. Read the post and you'll see that the context is for those that have engaged in unnatural link building techniques and that should color your entire reading of the advice.

It's a shame people are more interested in page views and drama instead of reading comprehension and critical analysis. Read the post and you'll see that the context is for those that have engaged in unnatural link building techniques and that should color your entire reading of the advice.

Because in the same post they single out widgets as well. And, in fact, I know a lot of folks who are terrified of widgets because of a certain +Matt Cutts video. But there are good widgets and bad widgets. The advice was, in fact, to not engage in bad widget behavior. I don't go out of my way to talk about that because it's good for my clients when the competition is being stupid.

So too can this advice be placed into context. Asking for links can be done well or poorly. More often than not, lets be fucking honest for a second, it is done poorly. Very poorly. You get the requests. I get them. It's crap. And that's what I believe is being addressed in this post.

Hell, I'll go even farther. If you're still relying on 'asking for links' as a primary way to obtain links you're going up a very muddy stream with no wooden implement to assist you. And are you still emailing folks and asking for someone to change the anchor text on a link? Send me that request and the link will more than likely just disappear.

You want to get your moral jollies off or spend time pumping up out-of-context information, go for it. But is it really worth your time?

Google Removes Google+ Posts from Knowledge Panel

One of the perks for brands who were also active on Google+ is that their most recent post on Google+ would also be featured in the knowledge panel for their brand or company, whenever it was triggered in a regular Google search result.  Not any longer.  Google has removed all Google+ posts from being displayed on those knowledge panels.

An interesting development that I'm sure will spin up the 'death of Google+' meme once again.

How Google May Classify Sites as Low Quality Sites

It describes how a site might lose traffic if ranking scores for links pointed to it are below a certain threshold.

Very happy to see +Bill Slawski talking about this more. I believe Google relies far more on link quality (in various forms) as a way to identify low quality sites. There have been rumblings offline about this all the way back to Panda 1.0 and supported through mentions here and there, sometimes in a tangential way.

Actionable Guide to Doing Better Semantic Keyword Research

At a high level, you want to make sure that you are creating high-quality content that delights your users, paying close attention to searcher intent. Mapping content to personas and categorizing keyword as navigational, transactional, or informational may also help with this endeavor.

After that, keywords on your website should be semantically related, not necessarily on the page level. To help with this, start thinking about your website in terms of related topical buckets. You know, I like the idea and even the UX but I wonder if the mental model for users matches purchase intent. Is this a solution in search of a problem?

AOL Takes Over Microsoft Display, Swaps Google Search For Bing

AOL struck a deal with the tech giant to take over responsibility for sales of display, mobile and video ads on Microsoft properties in the U.S. and eight other markets.

Under the AOL pact, Microsoft’s Bing search engine will power search results and advertising on AOL’s properties for 10 years. Bing is displacing Google Inc., which had long provided search technology for AOL.

Moving deck chairs on the proverbial Titanic. I'm sure it all makes sense to all parties involved but it's not going to actually do much of anything to the ad or search landscape IMO.

I was writing a snarky reply a few minutes ago, the kind that while 100% accurate just wouldn't be positive. Nothing good would come of it. So I took a deep breath and banished the 'someone's wrong on the Internet' klaxon in my head and simply moved on.

And you know what? I feel better for doing it.

And you know what? I feel better for doing it. ___

Facebook Authorship

Knocked another small thing off my to-do list this morning by getting Facebook Authorship to work on my blog. It had been a while since I'd waded into some PHP but in about 15 minutes I got this up and running. I'm probably more impressed with myself than I should be at this moment.

Introducing Place Tips for Businesses

As people continue to use their phones everywhere and all the time—including while they shop and dine—there’s an opportunity for businesses to connect with customers online while they are in store.

Place Tips gather useful information about a business or landmark—like posts from the business’ Page, upcoming events and friends’ recommendations and check-ins—and show it at the top of News Feed to in-store visitors.

To help this gain more adoption Facebook is giving out beacons for free to businesses. This really has the potential to be a game changer so don't sleep on this if you're a brick and mortar store.
