Joshua Berg37,893On Aug 28th Google announced termination of the Authorship program, via an announcement from *John Mueller.* goo.gl/QgyUSH *[This HOA Special is TODAY, see event for local time.]* To say this came as a shock to many loyal Google authorship fans & Google+ users would be an understatement. Needless to say there are lots of questions being asked about what all this means... Why did this happen? What does it mean for authors, for SEO & ranking? What about Author Rank, or Agent Rank, are they still coming? What's going to replace authorship & what about schema.org & other markup? So on very short notice, I decided to see if we could get the experts together on this, share our thoughts & answer your questions. Amazingly within a few hours & at the end of the week, we'd reworked our schedules & planned this event. Although I'm pretty sure this panel of well known industry thought leaders don't need an introduction, I'd like to say very special thanks to them all for coming. So a warm welcome to @107022061436866576067, @113690073826160821557, @115620878851836664537, @115106448444522478339 & @102572320061138442096. All are welcome to come & bring your questions. "Google’s unfair to my site," respond those hit by penalties. "Google should remove certain negative results for a politician, a company, a person," some might think, only to have others view any meddling as some type of overt bias. For every action Google might take, there might be an equally negative reaction or repercussion. That’s why the company thinks carefully about any search policy it puts into place. In this session, Google search policy specialist Patrick Thomas looks at some of the decisions Google has to make and the careful balancing act it has to maintain. *Tune in to the Google+ Hangout On Air* here on the Search Engine Land Google+ page, or you can watch on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/searchengineland Please use the #smx hashtag to join the discussion. Acquisition SEO and The Mid-Life Crisis of Search Results

Acquisition search engine optimization is happening more often as companies acquire or merge, effectively taking over shelf space on search results. Why settle for having the top result on an important term when I can have the first and second result?

My latest post where I explore the new way many successful sites are growing their search footprint. It's a complex issue so I'd love to hear your thoughts.

How Four-Numbers Can Send Your Millions of Visitors

I know there are billions of search queries entered into Google every single day, but maybe I’m just one of those weird few – an oddball – that likes to prefix his search terms with 2015 to get the latest results, instead of just trusting Google or using their other search filters.

This is a good post by +Glen Allsopp but I'm surprised this is some sort of secret. Nearly ... 10 years ago (?) there was research (by Yahoo I think) that showed that the most common modifier was year. I've been using that knowledge ever since.

A Synoptical Style of Online Reading

It's a way of reading on a topic that is both broad and deep, covering many different kinds of resources and content types, that leads to an understanding of a topic that is synthesized from all of the materials just read.

I believe this is far more prevalent than we believe and is brought about by the unprecedented access we have to information.

Twitter Engagement Study

What you see before you is the result of analyzing more than 2 million Western language tweets out of over 4 million Tweets we collected. In this paper we will outline the results of analyzing that data to learn and understand what drives behavior on Twitter.

Outside of social authority the biggest impact seems to be images, which reminds me about how Twitter is turning more into Twumblr. It simply must get more visual.

Blog Post Re-Titling

So I think my 'How To Out Class The Competition' title for my current blog post is just too weak.

Plus the one you like the most. Or toss in your own. I'll promote the post again tomorrow with the different title.

How To Out Class The Competition

Identifying query classes is one of the most powerful ways to optimize large sites. Understanding query classes allows you to identify both user syntax and intent.

I’ve talked for years about query classes but never wrote a post dedicated to them. Until now.

My latest post where I give away one of the most important concepts I use in optimizing large sites.

How Do Users Interact with Predictive (Queryless) Search?

While much has been written about how users interact with traditional desktop search, and some has been written about how user interact with mobile search results, interactions with proactive search have not been as well-documented.

Microsoft conducted a study to determine how user behavior could be used to improve rankings and relevance in proactive platforms, which highlights a number of interesting takeaways about user behavior in these new ecosystems.

Good stuff here about what an ever increasingly part of the search ecosystem. Well worth the read.

Google Displaying JSON-LD Ratings and Reviews Snippet

Google is now supporting ratings and reviews in JSON-LD format in the Google search results. It is supporting JSON-LD for both the search results and review listings shown in the knowledge panel.

I'm a big fan of JSON-LD for this type of stuff but I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop here since the ability to spam JSON-LD is enormously high.

The One Kind of 404 That Could Be Quietly Killing Your Search Efforts

Do 404 errors hurt SEO? It’s a simple question. However, the answer is far from simple. Most 404 errors don’t have a direct impact on SEO, but they can eat away at your link equity and user experience over time.

There’s one variety of 404 that might be quietly killing your search rankings and traffic.

I'm still amazed at how many people ignore their 404s. It's one of the few things that we, as SEOs, have control over and staying on top of them can absolutely add value to your search efforts.

Don't Bug Influencers, Follow Engagers

These days with everybody and their aunt practicing influencer outreach it’s almost impossible to connect with real influencers.  I don’t mean moderately successful people like myself. I mean the top dogs of the attention economy.

Influencers not only are busy as ever but now they have to deal with a flood of outreach messages that look more or less the same.

There's a lot of truth to what +Tadeusz Szewczyk says here. I think in many ways he's talking about acquiring 'true fans'. And the only way you get those fans is through real engagement. Also, the engagers of today are, potentially, the influencers of tomorrow. So while I wouldn't do this for that end result, I think the idea of having a strong community can, at the end of the day, result in having visibility among an influencer or two laterdown ... more »

Ads In AMP

When AMP launches on Google Search in February, it will include important, basic functionalities. These include the ability to traffic ads with ad servers of your choice, support for multiple demand sources and formats (including native ads), full control over ads placements, and viewability measurement.

Google's number one priority this year is AMP and it's clear by how fast they're removing obstacles like ads that they mean business.

Google Paid Apple $1 Billion to Keep Search Bar on iPhone

Apple received $1 billion from its rival in 2014, according to a transcript of court proceedings from Oracle Corp.’s copyright lawsuit against Google. The search engine giant has an agreement with Apple that gives the iPhone maker a percentage of the revenue Google generates through the Apple device, an attorney for Oracle said at a Jan. 14 hearing in federal court.

This is, at the end of the day, unsurprising. It does make you wonder a bit about Tim Cook's statements though.

Industry Leaders Make 2016 SEO Predictions

To help us better understand what’s in store for the SEO world in 2016 we asked 17 of the biggest experts one simple question: “In your opinion, what is the one most important thing that SEOs should focus on in 2016?”

It's interesting to see the patterns among the experts here (including myself). There's a strong 'user experience' meme, then a AMP (technical) meme and then a content meme. I will say that one person on this list (no not me) has an answer that I think is perhaps the most impactful and ... subversive in a way.  (No I'm not saying who.)

Why It Is So Hard To Confirm All Algorithm Updates

Google is constantly making changes, some are experiments, some are samples, some are larger updates as well. Within some algorithms, they might make tweaks daily, weekly, monthly. Some algorithms they may launch once and not update it again. We've seen examples of the algorithms that get tweaked and then not get updated for a while with Penguin. With Penguin it was updated a lot after Penguin 3.0 launched and then laid dead for 15+ months.

In addition, some algorithms use continuous crawl data, some crawl their own data periodically, some have their own fetch systems. The cycles this happens can be on a pattern or sporadic or never, it depends on each element.

This is the best dialog to-date on how Google's algorithm changes over time and why it can be difficult to be transparent about updates. A big thank you to +Andrey Lipattsev for his candor here.

Mind you, if you're privy to launch committee meetings then you pretty much know what is changing and the magnitude of those changes. I mean, the net benefit to the change is how they determine whether to launch something.

At the same time, it's become clear that the data and potentially the tables of computed data can update at different times and/or be rebalanced and that too can cause changes.

Google Files Patent To Replace Social Media Marketers

The proposed system is built on email communication, and the idea is quite simple: a link is shared from one user to another. When the link is clicked, Google will utilize a pop-up system that will suggest how to share the link on social media. To this end, Google understands that email is just one way of communicating, but wider distribution is required for “sharing links and for engaging in a conversation,” the patent says.

Email huh? I bet it would be a lot more powerful and interesting if they still had Google Reader as a data source.

Hidden Technical Debt in Machine Learning Systems

Machine learning offers a fantastically powerful toolkit for building useful complex prediction systems quickly. This paper argues it is dangerous to think of these quick wins as coming for free. Using the software engineering framework of technical debt, we find it is common to incur massive ongoing maintenance costs in real-world ML systems. We explore several ML-specific risk factors to account for in system design. These include boundary erosion, entanglement, hidden feedback loops, undeclared consumers, data dependencies, configuration issues, changes in the external world, and a variety of system-level anti-patterns.

This paper essentially shows Google's own struggle to incorporate machine learning into their algorithm(s). The list of folks who contributed to this paper is a who's who of major difference makers at Google including +Jeff Dean and +Roberto Bayardo to name just a few.

I've highlighted a portion here to show how this might translate into our real world (i.e. - those of use working on organic search). Here you can see that a machine learning algorithm might (probably is) used to map words to entities. (Note to what length they go to dodge that word here.) So what happens if they do go with a versioned approach? When a new version is approved that has the effect of, in some ways, a minor algorithm change. A core ranking signal improvement.

To me, it is fascinating to see the smartest folks out there essentially shining a light on how they've stubbed their collective toes in machine learning.

Your Life Is Tetris. Stop Playing It Like Chess

Don’t try to guess what pieces are coming when you try to improve your situation. Like Tetris, you can simply put yourself in the best possible position without seeking to completely control the system you play in. By all means, control and challenge yourself — seriously, go for that Tetris — but don’t expect any favors just because you did.

I really like this. Too many live thinking that if they do x then y will happen or that they can control how things are going to turn out by doing x, y and z. But the fact is, life is full of chaos and you can only seek to put yourself in the best position to handle what comes next.

Classifying Queries as Entity or Description Triggering Queries

A query that includes one or more query terms is received. One or more entity identifiers are extracted from one or more search results that are responsive to the query. One or more of the query terms are compared with the extracted entity identifiers. Based on comparing the query terms with the extracted entity identifiers, the query is classified as an entity-triggering query or as a description-triggering query.

Beyond the specifics in this patent, the trend and pattern of using entity extraction as a way to return and rank results is the real news.

Yahoo Releases Huge User Behavior Dataset

Today, we are proud to announce the public release of the largest-ever machine learning dataset to the research community. The dataset stands at a massive ~110B events (13.5TB uncompressed) of anonymized user-news item interaction data, collected by recording the user-news item interactions of about 20M users from February 2015 to May 2015.

This is pretty incredible and could help to reveal some interesting user behavior patterns and predictions. The thing is, right now Yahoo isn't very good at this so part of this is a self-preservation thing. Maybe someone else can make the experience better.

Google's New Brand Bidding Algorithm?

Looking at the biggest losers from January 10th 2016, we can see that most of the websites hit are news websites. This led some of the SEO specialists to form a theory that this algorithm change was news related. This diagnosis is definitely wrong though. There is a larger pattern behind all the drops and it clearly points to the conclusion that this algorithm change was actually related to how Google ranks brand-related queries.

Some interesting analysis here, though there was certainly a correction of sorts after the initial update. But when I see this type of branded volatility it makes me wonder if entity based signals are now being introduced into the core algorithm.

I've known about Ilya and Prerender for a while but +Michael King puts everything out there so we can all fully understand how we can take advantage of this feature.

Your Non-Linear Problem of 90% Utilization

We’re all erring on the side of over-utilization, and rather than providing the benefits of competitive advantage through higher productivity, it’s creating needless churn without increased productivity.

This is so very true, yet so many fall into the 'must be full out all the time' mentality, thinking that it will win out. I'm not saying be lazy, but it's about working smarter, not working harder (or longer).

Real Users Don't Know Jack ...

How do you know if you've hit the usability boundary if you never cross it? The real risk to the business is that you reinforce your current bias with user testing that validates that bias. You could miss major user trends such as scrolling, keyword scanning, how users evaluate authenticity, etc.

How do you know your tests are THOROUGH enough? Maybe the questions were too prescriptive...such as "Click on that tab. Tell me about your reaction to that description text." A better test would ask the user to find the description text on the page and then tell you about their reaction to it. Even better you could ask them a question that leads them to the description text such as "Find the weight of the item depicted on this page."

There's a lot of nuance to doing user testing. The fact is too many simply do it wrong and treat it as a form of rubber-stamp process to get the ideas they want into the priority and production queue.

But here are some ways that user testing can really work. But it's not easy and it's often uncomfortable.

A Mile Wide, An Inch Deep

As the writer of this piece, I don’t really want your time — I want to make an impression on how you think. If my rhetorical skills let me do that in less time (for me and you), all the better.

At Medium, we don’t really want anyone’s time. We want to create a platform that enables people to make an impression on others. To make them think. To change their minds. To teach them something or connect emotionally. It’s hard to measure any of that.

This is quite simply an amazing post that anyone analyzing technology platforms should read. It's so maddening to read the crap put out about these large sites without any real thought about why the stats might look like they do. Nicely done +Evan Williams.

What Makes Unforgettable Images So Memorable?

One intriguing finding was that memorability appears correlated with popularity. Images in the dataset that came from Flickr, and were popular on that site, ranked higher in memorability than images that were less popular. This link suggests people may eventually be able to design images so they’re optimized for sharing across social networks.

This is super interesting and increasingly important. Great find +Tadeusz Szewczyk!

5 Keys to Developing a Strong Tone of Voice

Your tone of voice isn’t about what you say but, rather, how you say it—and it about the impression of your brand it leaves on your would-be customers or prospects.

I agree that tone is incredibly important. But I'm not sure just how much of this can be taught. Too often the honest tone for a company is strangled by HR or Legal. And sometimes the honest tone might be ... unappealing. I think it's far more art than science.

Four Years of Schema: Recent Progress and Looking Forward

Rather than try to force a common unified approach across these domains, schema.org's evolution is pragmatic, driven by the combination of available Web data, and the likelihood of mainstream consuming applications.

Schema has been quite popular and the extensions being proposed by verticals (real estate, finance, medical etc.) are essentially in a Darwinian race for adoption. What I take from this is if you want specific schema you better be active in the forum and potentially band together with a frenemy to make it happen.

Indexing HTTPS Pages By Default

As a natural continuation of this, today we'd like to announce that we're adjusting our indexing system to look for more HTTPS pages. Specifically, we’ll start crawling HTTPS equivalents of HTTP pages, even when the former are not linked to from any page. When two URLs from the same domain appear to have the same content but are served over different protocol schemes, we’ll typically choose to index the HTTPS URL under certain conditions.

This isn't a huge surprise but it does look like https may be required in the near future the way things are going. In other news, Google still sucks as optimizing their posts for social. Throw us an image in there you knuckleheads.

Bottom line is that they all fail to report on many links, even from very prominent sites. However, this study is not meant to indict them. They remain incredibly valuable, and a core part of any SEO toolset.

Not surprising but a nice confirmation from the folks at +Stone Temple Consulting.
