Joshua Berg36,203On Aug 28th Google announced termination of the Authorship program, via an announcement from *John Mueller.* goo.gl/QgyUSH *[This HOA Special is TODAY, see event for local time.]* To say this came as a shock to many loyal Google authorship fans & Google+ users would be an understatement. Needless to say there are lots of questions being asked about what all this means... Why did this happen? What does it mean for authors, for SEO & ranking? What about Author Rank, or Agent Rank, are they still coming? What's going to replace authorship & what about schema.org & other markup? So on very short notice, I decided to see if we could get the experts together on this, share our thoughts & answer your questions. Amazingly within a few hours & at the end of the week, we'd reworked our schedules & planned this event. Although I'm pretty sure this panel of well known industry thought leaders don't need an introduction, I'd like to say very special thanks to them all for coming. So a warm welcome to @107022061436866576067, @113690073826160821557, @115620878851836664537, @115106448444522478339 & @102572320061138442096. All are welcome to come & bring your questions. "Google’s unfair to my site," respond those hit by penalties. "Google should remove certain negative results for a politician, a company, a person," some might think, only to have others view any meddling as some type of overt bias. For every action Google might take, there might be an equally negative reaction or repercussion. That’s why the company thinks carefully about any search policy it puts into place. In this session, Google search policy specialist Patrick Thomas looks at some of the decisions Google has to make and the careful balancing act it has to maintain. *Tune in to the Google+ Hangout On Air* here on the Search Engine Land Google+ page, or you can watch on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/searchengineland Please use the #smx hashtag to join the discussion. Foursquare Swarm Brings Back Mayorships

Got this in my email today and could only think, so it's going that poorly for Foursquare huh? Because since they split the service into two apps I've completely abandoned both. Perhaps I wasn't alone and now they're furiously trying to boost engagement again by integrating features from one into the other.

It's just a complete mess as far as I'm concerned. After a few years of making all the right moves Foursquare drove themselves into a ditch and, frankly, I don't see them digging themselves out of it any time soon - if ever.

Is Click Through Rate A Ranking Signal?

The evidence suggests that Google does use click-through rate as a ranking signal. Or, more specifically, Google uses click data as an implicit form of feedback to re-rank and improve search results.

My latest post where I explore whether CTR is a ranking signal. Hopefully the answer seems clear once you get through the post.

Thanks to +Danny Sullivan for continuing to ask the question, to +Rand Fishkin for continuing to test and to folks like +Ann Smarty, +Dan Shure, +Bill Slawski and +Cyrus Shepard (and many others I'm missing) for sharing this late yesterday with their followers.

Is The Tide Turning?

I've been troubled by what I see as an anti-science, anti-logic, anti-intellectual trend in America. It's been depressing and maddening.

But now in the last few weeks suddenly it seems like the tide might finally be turning. The events in Charleston (particularly the reaction of certain outlets and politicians) have shined a light on racism.

Then a huge win for The Affordable Care Act, where the Supreme Court upheld subsidies, ensuring that more Americans have access to healthcare, which actually helps reduce the total cost (as many left and right leaning organizations have now shown.)

Then California is on the verge of passing some of the strongest mandatory vaccine laws in the country, ending the untethered-from-logic arguments of the anti-vaccine crowd.

And today the Supreme Court ensures marriage equality fora... more »

Freelancing Lessons

Here are the 9 most important lessons I’ve learned in the past two years.

This is a seriously great post by +Joel Klettke. If you're thinking about freelancing you simply must read this. It's one of those posts where it feels like I might have written it myself and I sort of kick myself for not doing so.

Yahoo! Search Testing Google Search Results

I am uncertain to what degree they are testing search results from Google, but on some web browsers I am seeing Yahoo! organics and ads powered by Bing & in other browsers I am seeing Yahoo! organics and ads powered by Google.

Nice find here by +aaron wall which has now been confirmed by Yahoo! via +Search Engine Land. Search ... it's never boring.

US Desktop Search Volume Trend

May saw more negative numbers with a 1.55% decrease, year over year, in desktop search volume. That’s now five straight months of year over year declines.

Desktop is still huge but it's no longer where you're going to see growth in the US.

Google Removes Google+ Posts from Knowledge Panel

One of the perks for brands who were also active on Google+ is that their most recent post on Google+ would also be featured in the knowledge panel for their brand or company, whenever it was triggered in a regular Google search result.  Not any longer.  Google has removed all Google+ posts from being displayed on those knowledge panels.

An interesting development that I'm sure will spin up the 'death of Google+' meme once again.

How Google May Classify Sites as Low Quality Sites

It describes how a site might lose traffic if ranking scores for links pointed to it are below a certain threshold.

Very happy to see +Bill Slawski talking about this more. I believe Google relies far more on link quality (in various forms) as a way to identify low quality sites. There have been rumblings offline about this all the way back to Panda 1.0 and supported through mentions here and there, sometimes in a tangential way.

Actionable Guide to Doing Better Semantic Keyword Research

At a high level, you want to make sure that you are creating high-quality content that delights your users, paying close attention to searcher intent. Mapping content to personas and categorizing keyword as navigational, transactional, or informational may also help with this endeavor.

After that, keywords on your website should be semantically related, not necessarily on the page level. To help with this, start thinking about your website in terms of related topical buckets. One of your goals should be to have the search engines perceive your site as an authority for each one of of those topical buckets.

Twitter Product Pages and Shopping Collections

The social media platform becomes more Amazon-like by allowing accounts to create pages about products and group them into collections, all of which can be tweeted.

You know, I like the idea and even the UX but I wonder if the mental model for users matches purchase intent. Is this a solution in search of a problem?

AOL Takes Over Microsoft Display, Swaps Google Search For Bing

AOL struck a deal with the tech giant to take over responsibility for sales of display, mobile and video ads on Microsoft properties in the U.S. and eight other markets.

Under the AOL pact, Microsoft’s Bing search engine will power search results and advertising on AOL’s properties for 10 years. Bing is displacing Google Inc., which had long provided search technology for AOL.

Moving deck chairs on the proverbial Titanic. I'm sure it all makes sense to all parties involved but it's not going to actually do much of anything to the ad or search landscape IMO.

The High Road

I was writing a snarky reply a few minutes ago, the kind that while 100% accurate just wouldn't be positive. Nothing good would come of it. So I took a deep breath and banished the 'someone's wrong on the Internet' klaxon in my head and simply moved on.

And you know what? I feel better for doing it.

Facebook Authorship

Knocked another small thing off my to-do list this morning by getting Facebook Authorship to work on my blog. It had been a while since I'd waded into some PHP but in about 15 minutes I got this up and running. I'm probably more impressed with myself than I should be at this moment.

Introducing Place Tips for Businesses

As people continue to use their phones everywhere and all the time—including while they shop and dine—there’s an opportunity for businesses to connect with customers online while they are in store.

Place Tips gather useful information about a business or landmark—like posts from the business’ Page, upcoming events and friends’ recommendations and check-ins—and show it at the top of News Feed to in-store visitors.

To help this gain more adoption Facebook is giving out beacons for free to businesses. This really has the potential to be a game changer so don't sleep on this if you're a brick and mortar store.

Data Visualization Requires Storytelling!

In today's world of "Big Data" everyone is looking for interesting patterns in their data and visualizing the results.  They think "pretty pictures" are the goal.  But, pretty pictures are often pretty useless if they don't reveal a story.  In order to understand what the patterns are emerging we need to understand the story behind, beneath and within the data.  The standard Who/What/When/Where/How is a good place to start.  Below is a story of how a client of Orgnet, LLC applied financial and social network analysis to tell a story of corruption and fraud to their city prosecutor.

Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes. It's not just about creating a pretty picture or throwing together a bunch of graphs. The data must tell a story and this one is a great example.

Teaching Machines to Read and Comprehend

http://bit.ly/1LuWaHC

Teaching machines to read natural language documents remains an elusive challenge. Machine reading systems can be tested on their ability to answer questions posed on the contents of documents that they have seen, but until now large scale training and test datasets have been missing for this type of evaluation. In this work we define a new methodology that resolves this bottleneck and provides large scale supervised reading comprehension data. This allows us to develop a class of attention based deep neural networks that learn to read real documents and answer complex questions with minimal prior knowledge of language structure.

Very dense but also very interesting and important when you begin to think about how this could influence search.

Farewell to Circa News

It’s with great disappointment that we let you know that Circa News has been put on indefinite hiatus*. Producing high-quality news can be a costly endeavor and without the capital necessary to support further production we are unable to continue. Our mission was always to create a news company where factual, unbiased, and succinct information could be found. In doing so we recognized that building a revenue stream for such a mission would take some time and chose to rely on venture capital to sustain. And even if they do, does the manner in which it is delivered (less is more) make ad based models too difficult to implement since the balance of news content to ad content would be too low?

I'm sure something next week will sadden me with its pretzel logic but for now I'm feeling like maybe we're starting to make better decisions as country.___

Vote Poison Apple Please

I don't usually do this sort of stuff but my daughter has had the opportunity to participate in this theater company and they really are amazing. And it's such a contrast to another 'company' that we used to attend.

Poison Apple doesn't seek to make these kids into stars but to teach them about theater and use it to help them feel confident. So if you have just 30 seconds, click through, click again on the big link and then vote.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Wikipedia Link Rot Is A Secret Goldmine for Broken Link Building

However, just because this strategy is particularly useful for Wikipedia, it doesn’t mean that’s all it’s good for. If possible, you will want to leverage this as much as possible. This means you can extend your search for broken links to much more than Wikipedia.

Honestly, the link from Wikipedia isn't super important in my book (and dealing with Wiki is a small bit of hell) but using it as a source for identifying broken links and finding those sites linking to that broken link - that's just smart.

Is Google's Mobilegeddon Scaring Websites Into Bad Design Decisions?

Columnist Brian Massey believes Google may be doing businesses a disservice by recommending a responsive Web design to improve the mobile experience.

I agree with +Brian Massey and see far too many sites converting to responsive and seeing conversion go down.

I've always maintained that Google's recommendation on responsive is because most small businesses simply can't afford adaptive design.

But I'm seeing too many responsive conversions go awry and the time and effort to fix that or simply live with the sub-optimal presentation seems to be a steep cost - steeper perhaps than developing an adaptive design instead.

And we’re tackling this in three ways: though ensuring our tools are made available to journalists around the world (and that newsrooms know how to use them); by getting helpful Google data sets in the hands of journalists everywhere; and through programs designed to build on some of the biggest opportunities that exist in the media industry today.

I have a Fry Meme reaction (http://cdn.meme.am/images/84688.jpg) to this announcement. I'm not sure if this is 'helping' journalists and news or if Google figures they need to make news better and will, by hook or by crook, get them to start using data and other sources to make it more viable.

Twitter's Project Lightning

The new tool will give the company a way to show the best of Twitter to both logged-in and logged-out users on a variety of platforms. It will have instantly loading videos and rich images, and will occupy a front-and-center location in an upcoming version of the Twitter app.

This does not surprise me in the slightest. Topic-based, visually-rich, feeds that don't require the friction of following but leverage the contributions on the platform is just ... smart.

Facebook Testing 'See First' Feature

“We are always exploring new ways to improve the Facebook experience, and are currently running a small test of a feature that lets you indicate that you’d like to see posts from a specific person or Page at the top of your News Feed.”

If this makes it past testing then it's going to be an all out war by brands to get users to select them as a 'See First' option. The other potential result is that brands might seek out influencers who might be more likely to be a 'See First' option and persuade them to share their content.

Definitely the right thing to do even though I can imagine it'll be a thorny process to oversee.

How To Cheat at Creating Great Presentations

Also – when I say “cheats” I don’t mean these are effort-free. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. These will take serious effort and substantive time commitment. But, I believe there’s somewhere between slightly negative and absolutely no value in delivering a subpar presentation at an industry event.

Good stuff from +Rand Fishkin and definitely reference material as I wade back into presenting later this year.

The Colossus Update

My gut feeling is that this was more than just a waking giant, even as powerful of a SERP force as Wikipedia has become. We should know more as their HTTPS roll-out continues and their index settles down. In the meantime, I think we can expect Google to become increasingly serious about HTTPS, even if what we saw yesterday turns out not to have been an algorithm update.

Excellent name +Pete Meyers. Meanwhile, it's been nearly 9 months since the last Panda update.

The Next Feature Fallacy

These mistakes are made because there’s often the well-intentioned instinct to focus on features that drive deep engagement. Of course you need a strong baseline of engagement, but at its extreme, this turns misguided because features that aren’t often used can’t bend the curve. A “day 7 feature” will automatically be used less than an experience tied to onboarding, since the tragic curve above shows that fewer than 4% of visitors will end up seeing it.

It's shocking to me that so many startups don't grasp this concept. Features must be developed to align with optimizing this 'curve', which is really just a conversion funnel. Does the feature attract more visitors? Does it get more people to sign-up? Do those sign-ups turn into real users?

Google Play Gaining Ground Against Apple

Google Play downloads reached 50 billion in the last 12 months, while Apple's app store downloads totaled 25 billion.

This is so incredibly important. While iOS users are still more lucrative, just how much longer will that be the case. Android has the users and it has the war chest to slowly figure out how to increase the revenue per user. And when that happens ... watch out Apple.

Republishing Your Content May Still Be Dangerous

Do I still want to republish on these other sites? Not if I want to err on the side of caution with my SEO; so perhaps I’ll rewrite/respin/reapproach this content for republishing. I don’t mean spinning in terms of term uniqueness, but in terms of creating a truly new article. Just as some presenters do the same presentation with a different approach or perspective, or how some friends tell a funny story with a different state of mind each time, I think weighing the gains and losses against the time of a rewrite makes sense.

Great examples here from +Bill Sebald. I, personally, have never been a big fan of syndication of this sort. Most clients do not get enough in return for this type of arrangement so I provide very specific guidelines about how these arrangements must be configured to remain successful.

One of the issues I have on a macro-level is what the reader remembers when they read content on a different site. You really only remember two things about any piece of content IMO (http://www.blindfiveyearold.com/you-wont-remember-that-infographic).

So unless you have true gravitas I generally think readers remember [subject] on [site]. That means you get very little in terms of mindshare and, what's worse, if that person decides to reference that content they link, not to your original piece, but to the syndicated piece.

This gets even worse if you think about the general size of audience. Sure, you get your content out in front of more people but that just increases the odds that those people will reference it on that platform.

I'm a selfish bastard when it comes to these things and I'd rather work hard - very hard - to establish the authority of my site or that of a client so that people beat a path to the original content.

Social Shares and Links Correlation Data

My random sample of 10,000 posts found an overall positive correlation of 0.62 which indicates a fairly strong correlation between shares and links. This was slightly greater than the previous studies have found though I should say again that the data set I used was relatively small.

Good research here by +Steve Rayson. However, I think there's an assumption here that is actually revealed in the findings. We share and link for different reasons.

What this research proves, in many ways, is that racking up shares may not lead to search success. Shares have to be followed by links. And that has everything to do with the quality of that content. I kind of hate the word quality here but it's the best proxy I have right now.

Shares give you the opportunity, the content then has to be strong enough so... more »

The Traffic Prediction Accuracy of 12 Metrics Services

In recent years, it would seem, services like Alexa, Compete, Quantcast, and others simply don’t do a consistently good job of estimating a website’s traffic.

What about now? Some new services, like Similar Web and SEMRush, have been lauded by practitioners in the marketing community for having much better data. Compete, supposedly, has improved its own service too. I figure it’s time to re-run the data and see how traffic prediction scores perform in 2015.

I completely agree with +Rand Fishkin that these services are all flawed. But I still find them amazingly valuable.

The trick is to use as many of them as possible to triangulate traffic (and other) data on a site. In particular, it's useful for tracking one site against others in a vertical.

It's not about one. It's about using all of them to get a picture of the landscape.
