Steve Gill10,469UK PhotographersHere is my circle of interactive UK Photographers. There are some great names in here and they will fill your stream with interesting posts. Now, if you don't see your name here, or the name of someone who should be here, just add a note in the comments and I will add you before I share again. If you are a UK based photographer or aspiring photographer, please let me know. I only want to include people who actively share work on G+ so I regularly check each and every nomination to ensure that only interactive people who have shared work in the past couple of months are included. If you haven't posted anything for a while you might find your name dropped.2012-04-05 07:59:3831926510
Sophie Wrobel6,893Cream of the cream: My mentor circleThis is my first circle share. I've been rather hesitant to share circles as I feel that circle shares are incredibly impersonal: you get a pile of suggestions without any real idea why, or where they fit in your world. Then +Gideon Rosenblatt proposed a wonderful idea: a Google+ Mentors Circle. The idea being, you add people to this circle who you want to be your mentor, target them by following their posts and building a relationship with them so that you can win them as your mentor. And: what a circle to share! That is the 'cream of the cream' circle. While I don't follow that definition so strictly - I've always been one to silently observe and pick and choose qualities that I'd like to attain, and then copy particular 'role models' without necessarily asking for a more formal relationship - I did start collecting people whom I want to learn some particular quality from into a circle. Potential mentors, you could say. And then I realized: This wasn't a circle I could share. Some of those people were G+ lurkers. Others were using G+ as a Twitter-crosspost-outlet or Reader-sharing-outlet without actually engaging in conversation. So I removed them and was left with a circle of people whom I want to learn something from, who post insightful content and who respond to conversations actively. And that, fellow readers, is this circle. Since these people happen to also be 'big noisy people' on the most part, I expect you are already following some of them. If not, feel free to meet and greet, and/or guess what I'm trying to learn these days. :)I'll share a second circle, one with my favorite 'not-so-noisy' people to read based on content quality, later - again, as an attempt to counter the trend of sharing circles with too much noise.2012-04-01 22:44:0518303
Ben Tucker3,906My UK Photographers circle, Grown quite a bit since the last share. Again though anyone who doesnt find themselves in it and happens to be from the UK and a photographer let me know so I can add you :)2012-01-02 14:37:47195704
Melvin Little2,583here is my photography circle (a.k.a HOLY GRAIL of photo knowledge) I believe these are some of the worlds best photographers in this circle i cherished it so much i felt it is selfish not to share the people with such vast knowledge... make sure you check the photos of +Colby Brown +Trey Ratcliff +RC Concepcion +Michael N Sutton ..... +Robert Scoble always finds something interesting ALWAYS.... +Danielle Tunstall has some very dark photography but i love that artistic view as well there is much more in here as well but these are the few i personally hold above the rest2012-01-01 18:13:13501715
Gerard Charnley16,174UK Photogs V2.0Hi folks,Several people have recently stated that they see my UK photographers shared circle as the official UK list. I must say I'm immensely flattered by this :) But it does mean that I need to be a little more proactive so I thought I'd start sharing it on a regular basis. Now seems an appropriate time for V2 given there is another circle sharing frenzy going on! So let me know if you are UK based, are active on G+ and want to be added! Note that in the next version I will be weeding out anyone that's inactive and hasn't posted in over a month. Please share if you can.Cheers, Gez.2011-12-06 12:52:132187096

Watched The Internet's Own Boy: the story of Aaron Swartz this evening. A powerful, moving and sad documentary. I knew of his involvement in e.g. Reddit but I'd missed his important contributions to RSS, Creative Commons and other things. We've lost a visionary, a genius, and one of the foundational figures in Internet society, with an impact and influence in so many areas. So sad.

If you care about technology / the Internet, freedom, democracy, information and learning then this film deserves your urgent attention. Do not miss it.

The director Brian Knappenberger Skyped in for a Q&A after the screening and was generous enough to answer one of my questions. A very thoughtful and impressive guy. I'm keen to see his previous work, We Are Legion, now.

Incidentally, if you are into similar things then I also recommend Terms & Conditions May Apply; and Downloaded, the story of Napster.

FWIW, the Aaron Swartz film is available under CC license for download, but it is also coming to (no doubt a limited number of) cinemas in the UK this weekend, so try to get to see it.

New Nest Day

Today's pretty darn exciting for a Monday as Twitter UK moved into it's new nest in London! (when we say nest, we mean office obviously:)

The place is absolutely amazing, and would give SOHO house a run for it's design, and, well, take a look at the photos and I'm sure you'll agree this is one stunning office indeed.

We're all super thrilled to be here, the design and infrastructure team did an amazing job, especially considering they did a year's worth of work in 6 months. Oh and yes we do have a Dalek guarding the office.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to the party

Very cool to see Twitter data being used to support the +Google Crisis Response efforts.

Now you can find relevant social media content on Public Alerts...

This is our 2nd post on how we’re developing our products to allow users to contribute what they know about an unfolding crisis.

Many people on the front lines of a disaster are sharing relevant information through social media. We want to help make this content easier to find, and available alongside information from official sources.

It’s no small feat to identify the most useful information— but it’s important to start somewhere. That’s why we’re taking a first step to integrate social media in our #crisisresponse products.

Starting today, you can find relevant data from Twitter on a subset of Google Public Alerts. We launched Public Alerts to provide updates from official sources, such as the National Weather Service, via Google Now, Search, and Google Maps. Now, some of the more extreme Public Alerts will include Tweets to help answer important questions: are schools closing? Are neighbors evacuating? What are people seeing on the front lines of a storm?

Here’s an example: this is a Public Alert from a flood warning from last week, viewed on a mobile phone. In this screenshot, existing sections such as Recommended Actions and News will be accompanied by a feed of relevant Tweets, seen as you scroll down. This is also available on the desktop view of an Alert.

For now, this is only in English-speaking regions, and only for our Public Alerts product, but we’re working to add new kinds of social content to other products and geographies in the future.

We hope these initial steps help people access more of the information they need during a crisis— and we welcome your feedback on how we can do more. In the meantime, stay safe this hurricane season!___Very cool to see Twitter data being used to support the +Google Crisis Response efforts.

Happy to be a contributor to the latest edition of NFJS magazine - with an article about +MQTT and Java.

Screenshots from our mobile-first redesign of NFJS, the Magazine (http://nofluffjuststuff.com/home/magazine_subscribe) in EPUB3, MOBI and PDF formats. The magazine is produced from articles written in AsciiDoc format using only tools from the +Asciidoctor ecosystem. These tools are being integrated into an Asciidoctor sub-projected named "editions" for the purpose of producing publications such as this one.

These screenshots were taken on a Nexus 7 2012 Android tablet. The eBook formats of the magazine are responsive and scale to any device size.

The fonts used in the magazine are as follows:

M+ 1p - headings, callout numbers
Noto Serif - body copy
M+ 1mn - source code and inline literals
Font Awesome - admonition icons___Happy to be a contributor to the latest edition of NFJS magazine - with an article about +MQTT and Java.

Interesting to see brands moving away from Facebook's algorithms to a more open, less opaque approach http://blog.eat24hours.com/breakup-letter-to-facebook-from-eat24/ - I'm really interested in Twitter's ability to offer interesting and relevant content on a per-subscription basis. Also, sometimes, the public and open nature of the conversation can be a real win.

AVR microcontrollers are at the heart of the Arduino, making them ubiquitous in the hobbyist/hacker/maker world. This book, Make: AVR Programming, peels away the layers of abstraction in Arduino to show you how to program microcontrollers directly in C.
