Alister Macintyre42,106Do not confuse this circle with the one I have on Native American Indian interests.  My India Circle has people whose lives have either passed thru the great nation of India, are there now, or interested in India.  My interests range world wide, some nations more than others.  I recently started an Asia circle, and tried to pour into it my circles for Australia, China, Japan, India, some other countries, but bumped into another of G+ silly ceilings.  I have circles for several major regions of the world, including Middle East, Eu-W, and Eu-other.  I also have circles for specific nations like Germany and Haiti.2014-03-27 18:26:53148002CC G+

Dallas McMillan7,412Circle from the land downunder - Australia's top 200 PlussersWho are Australia's most followed people on Google Plus?I've put together this circle of Australia's top 200 profiles (by follower numbers - not engagement - some aren't particularly active) on Google Plus. It's pretty interesting to see the types of profiles which make the cut. Here is my quick overview:By far the most dominant characteristic of the top 200 are photographers - professional and amateur. The other notable individuals are a couple of cricketers in the top 10, a smattering of celebrity chefs, musicians, writers, artists, models and other celebrities. There are also fair numbers of Google employees, IT workers, social media and marketing types as well as a decent number of scientists and mathematicians. The only politician I noticed was Malcolm Turnbull - the Prime Minister and Leader of the opposition are conspicuous by their absence.I got the list from +CircleCount http://www.circlecount.com/au/profileslist/ and I've made a few tweaks - removing a couple of profiles that were inactive or had moved away from Australia. There were a number of others which probably don't belong as they now work in the USA or elsewhere.  #australia   #australianphotographers   #circleshare  I've notified members of the circle - let me know if you don't want to be listed.2013-08-04 14:24:522009213CC G+

The goal of terrorism is to strike terror into the hearts of their enemies. If it encourages them to surrender then fine. If it encourages a massive retaliation from a powerful nation then that is even better.

Terrorist tactics are by their very nature perverse. The worse things get, the better things get.

Interesting presentation at the 40:00 minute mark about High Fidelity, a new distributed virtual reality network. Philip Rosedale created Second Life and this new system can rightly be thought of as its successor. Whereas SL relied on a highly centralised server facility, this one is distributed across the whole internet. Where SL was very limited as to what avatars could do or how they could interact, High Fidelity works by capturing the movements and facial expressions of each person. The new system is all about sensors and immersive VR headsets and expanding the reach of virtual reality.

Najibullah’s Prophecy

When the Taliban entered Kabul in 1996, they dragged Muhammad Najibullah from UNICEF compound where he had taken refuge three years before when a deal to extract him from Kabul collapsed, tortured him for hours with the special ingenuity that Afghani warlords apparently can always bring to bear on such situations, and hung his castrated corpse from a lamppost.

Najibullah is routinely reviled as a despot and a torturer.

Like Saddam Hussein in Iraq, Najibullah stood for secularist, socialist, and pro-Soviet policies that suppressed Islamic fundamentalism with extreme violence and a certain degree of success. Like Hussein, Najibullah was destroyed by the United States, with rather grisly consequences for his nation.

Najibullah was well-educated, and perfected his English during his years of confinement in Kabul. A career UNICEF official, Alan Brady, came to Kabul just before the city fell to the Taliban, and wrote an eerie, evocative accountin the Virginia Quarterly Review of a call he paid on the fallen dictator in 1995 shortly before his death.

During the two years I was working in Afghanistan, I had become fascinated by the story of Najibullah. Here was a man of great intellect, educated as a doctor and pediatrician to “do no harm.” He was at the same time a political activist who received training in the Soviet Union. In 1981, he returned to Afghanistan to head the KHAD, a Secret Police organization notorious for torture and executions. Five years later, he emerged as president of his country during times of vicious conflict. Undoubtedly, there was blood on his hands.

Yet many people described him as enlightened. My colleagues who had worked with the Najibullah government from 1986 to 1992 spoke highly of his leadership and support for the country’s social development, especially public health and education. It was an anomaly, throughout the 1980s, that the West was empowering mujahideen groups who were burning down schools, banning girls from being educated, trying to cut women off from basic opportunities or even health care, and preaching ideologies of xenophobic hatred. The CIA and others did all of this in the interest of bringing down a government that, in the areas of social development at least, stood for secular and progressive Western values. The fight against Communism made for many strange bedfellows for more than four decades, perhaps nowhere more so than in Afghanistan.

For a long time, I had harbored a curiosity about Najibullah and what changes might have occurred in him as he sat in that UN house in Kabul with nothing to do except read and reflect. Did such reflection give him second thoughts about the life he had lived and the things he had done? …

To say that this man was pleased and charmed by our arrival would be a grave understatement…Before I knew it, each time he spoke, he would start with the words, “dear Alan.” Over many cups of tea, sitting together on the couch, sharing chocolates from the newly opened box on the table before us, he spoke honestly and freely about what he had been going through, and then his complaints about the UN and how it had betrayed him.

At last I got up the courage to ask the questions that were on my mind. It is not an easy subject to broach, this question of his role as head of KHAD and the blood he must have had on his hands…

I could see the look in his eye change as my question sank in… Like the flexing of a relaxed muscle, the power and charisma at the core of this man reappeared in sharp relief, and with a loud shout of “NO!” his fist came down with an explosive sound on the table before us, sending teacups flying upward.

“Dear Alan,” he was saying. “Do not be naïve about what you are facing. They will bring a destruction you cannot imagine.”

His message to me, at our New Year meeting in 1995, was one of no regrets for whatever he had done to stand against the Islamists. He was absolutely clear about that; he would do it again.

In the quiet of that evening, he laid out for us what the lines of conflict would be, in a world where Communism was finished. “After the fall of the Berlin Wall,” he said, “I wrote to Bush. I explained all of this, I told him that the Reds are finished, and the enemy of the United States is no longer the Reds, it is the Greens. I offered to work together with him.”

The “green” that Najibullah was referring to was the green flag of the Islamists, and the Bush he wrote to was the first President Bush—George H.W. He never received an answer.___

This seems to be shaping up to being important. Gut bacteria are essential for all kinds of bodily functions and yet we often need to harm them through the use of antibiotics. This can have a significant impact particularly on young children and may help explain the rise of some food allergies.

Don't act on this as if this is medical advice. This research is still in its early stages. It reaffirms to me though that the use of antibiotics should be minimized when it's possible to do so. That doesn't mean not using them to treat infections but trying to avoid getting infections in the first place.

For very young children and babies, it is a good idea to reduce the chances of infection until their immune systems have had a chance to develop more fully. That's not always an easy thing to achieve in practice however.

“Dear Mr President, here is a suggestion for a paragraph to include in the Cambridge speech. I think it best to meet head on the Zhanaozen issue. The fact is you have made changes following it; but in any event these events, tragic though they were, should not obscure the enormous progress that Kazakhstan has made. Dealing with it [the massacre] in the way I suggest, is the best way for the western media. It will also serve as a quote that can be used in the future setting out the basic case for Kazakhstan.”

In his own handwriting, Mr Blair added at the bottom of the letter: “With very best wishes. I look forward to seeing you in London! Yours ever Tony Blair."

So, I hear that ISIS / ISIL / The Islamic State is attempting to commit genocide against the Yezidi. What's a Yezidi?

Uh, that's a good question. The short answer: they're a Kurdish religious minority. Probably.

What sort of religious minority?

Uh. That depends on who you ask. They're either (a) adherents to the Kurds' ancestral religion, (b) a weird sort of Ismaili Shi'a, or (c) holdovers from Zoroastrianism.

Or they're not even Kurds. (This probably isn't true, but some Yezidi believe this, so I probably ought to mention it.)

Wait, what? Why don't we know something so simple?

Or they're not even Kurds. (This probably isn't true, but some Yezidi believe this, so I probably ought to mention it.)

Wait, what? Why don't we know something so simple?

So, this area of the world  -- northern Mesopotamia, southern Iran, parts of Syria, and eastern Anatolia -- has historically been a refuge for religious minorities. Under the Parthians and Sassanids, it played host to dissident Zoroastrianism. Until the Mongol invasion, it was the homeland of the Sabians of Harran. The strongholds of the Assassins were built here. And other syncretic faiths like the Druze and Ahl-e-Haqq were founded in the same region.

In short, if mainstream Islam didn't approve of it, it was probably invented somewhere around here. And there's been a lot of cross-pollination since. For more about that, see here: http://goo.gl/Ct2lCI.

Can't we just ask them?

Sure! We could do that. For a relatively small, persecuted religious minority, they're surprisingly open about their religion. It's just that... well... asking them doesn't make it clear.

Why not?

From one perspective, Yezidis look a lot like Sufis. They worship at the tombs of Sufi saints. They even maintain some of them. They use Sufi religious terminology (Murids, Sheikhs) to describe their caste system. They have a round of obligatory daily prayers. They claim that their name comes from the Caliph Yazid, who officially sanctioned their religion.

And periodically, the ruling authorities have decided that they're Ismaili Shi'a and decided not to persecute them.

So, they're a kind of Muslim?

From another perspective, they're ... uh ... the exact opposite of Muslim.

They venerate Satan in the form of a peacock. Their most valuable religious artifacts are brass peacock idols. They tend to pray toward those (or the sun) rather than toward the Kaaba. And they certainly aren't religions of the book: if they actually have a book (and this is unclear), it's in Armenia and no one living has actually read it.

And they've periodically had prohibitions on literacy, although this -- like most other religious rules -- are not particularly common.

So, they're Satanists?

Uh. No, not that either.

You see, after refusing to bow down to mankind, Melek Tawus reconciled with God. He and the other angels are back to being agents of God on earth and in Heaven.Because God eventually wrote off this one little sin, it's not fair to call Melek Tawus "Satan" in the normal sense.

In fact, the angels in Yezidism are really more like the Yazatas of Zoroastrianism -- which is a much more sensible origin than the name of a very unpopular (but perfectly orthodox) Caliph.

So, they're, what, Zoroastrians?

Uh.

They're nothing like modern Zoroastrians, at least. After going through a very long phase where it was a lot like Hinduism, and a somewhat shorter phase where it picked up Platonist ideas, modern Zoroastrianism ended up with fairly strict dualism and fire temples. In other words, if Yezidism is anything like Zoroastrianism, it's like a type of Zoroastrianism which is very poorly documented.

Then, of course, there's that thing with peacocks.

What thing with peacocks?

In Zoroastrianism, they're a symbol of transcendent evil. After Ahura Mazda creates every living thing, Ahirman creates the peacock -- just to demonstrate that evil can create things of beauty, but that it refuses to.

It seems pretty unlikely that Yezidi would have gotten another thing about the most common local religion exactly backwards. If their religious dissent dates all the way back to the era where Zoroastrianism was the most common religion, they were likely dissidents back then, too.

Jesus. They could not have engineered their religion any better to make their neighbors uneasy. At least they're part of the broader Kurdish community, though, right?

Yezidi usually believe they're Kurds.

Unfortunately, relations between the Yezidi of Sinjar (who were recently stuck on top of a mountain with no water) and the rest of the Kurds are tense. Because Sinjar Yezidi do not by any means believe they're Kurds, and want to remain separate from them. This means a number of things.

First, there weren't many Sinjar Yezidi in the peshmerga. That meant that rescuing Sinjar was a relatively low priority. Second, that meant that Sinjar Kurds had, until recently, been raising a huge political ruckus about getting parliamentary representation separate from the larger Kurdish block.

What can the rest of the world do about it?

Fortunately for everyone (except the Yezidi still in Iraq), there has been a large Yezidi diaspora to more friendly countries. Most of the world's Yezidi population lives in Iraq, but an increasing number are immigrating to Germany and the United States.

Lincoln, Nebraska has a large Yezidi population, and they seem to be doing fine. In fact, it seems like -- in general -- the Yezidi do fine everywhere but home. And there are only half a million Yezidi worldwide: enough for the West to happily take on as a diasporic population.

Which we kind of owe them.

When the US moved in and conquered the country they live in -- in the process, making it completely unsafe -- a huge number of our translators were ethnic Yezidi. We may not be able to adhere to we break it, we bought it with respect to the catastrophic, immoral war that shattered their tenuous peace, but we can at least adhere to it in bringing them to a safer place. We've done it before, with the Hmong, and we can do it again.___

This is obvious enough, I've been thinking along these lines for a while. Microsoft really should abandon Windows phone and embrace and extend Android instead. They are the only company who could replace Google's services with credible ones of their own. In the process they get a boatload of apps to fill out their ecosystem and make their phones worth buying.

Under Nadella, the company’s philosophy appears to be shifting towards releasing apps and products across all platforms. Also, Microsoft could be the only competitor able to offer a viable alternative to Google’s proprietary apps, like Gmail, Drive, Maps, and the Play Store. It isn’t that hard to imagine a bizarro world where CyanogenMod phones ship with a full suite of apps from Microsoft. Of course, that’s just speculation based on an incomplete report from a single source.

When I first read this article, one of the first comments was this:

This is competition and capitalism at its finest.  Any service which can be tied up with a lot of calls and cancellations is a flawed service.

I have a problem with that, but I'm going to take a detour through some other issues that I think the flaw is related to first.

First up, a personal story.  A young man I know, age 19, got his upper jaw busted off this summer, with a couple of teeth attached.  He's white, his parents are working professionals, he's the picture of privilege, so that's not a factor.  It was about 2 in the morning, he got punched by the boyfriend of the mother of his girlfriend.  That was the first and only swing, the police conducted a search for the man, who skipped town.

This young man was very likely faded at the time, though he hasn't admitted that to me, and he and his assailant had a track record of not getting along.  However nothing he did warranted getting his jaw broken and his teeth knocked out.  However, it is my understanding of the world that there are those people who do that sort of thing.   Those people are not particularly subject to my influence, either.

When I saw the young man later, I said to him, "I want you to know that I don't think this was your fault.  However, as your martial arts instructor [well, former martial arts instructor, really] I would like to know:  Why didn't you block?"

He replied, "There was no way I could see it coming."  His girlfriend, who was present, also remarked, "Yeah, nobody could have stopped that."

I have to say that I think that's extremely unlikely.  I've watched a lot of punches over the years, and there are very few of them for which there would have been "no way" for anyone to see them coming.  I let the matter drop.  What I said was, "Well, I just want you to be healthy and safe."

My understanding of what's going on emotionally is that if he were to admit there were something he could have done, he would then have felt shame.  Because we are a culture that blames victims.  And a lot of that victim blaming comes in the form of predators blaming and shaming their prey for getting caught by them.

As it turns out, we're all predators.  We "hunt" for bargains.  We play laser tag, and thrill when we sneak up on someone and tag them without them noticing us.  We play thousands of hours of video games that are all about killing other people and taking their stuff.  (Skyrim, I'm looking at you).  This is less gendered than you might think, too.  There are a lot of women out there who are eager for us to know that they play these games, too.

So we are faced with the issue of figuring out which predatory behaviors are acceptable and which aren't.  What's unacceptable in peace might well become acceptable in war.

And so the people who skate up to, or past, the edge engage in justification.  They blame the victims.

And that blame, and its attendant shame gets in the way of people doing things that would keep them safer and healthier.

In a very recent piece about a new fingernail polish that can detect certain date rape drugs in a drink, Jessica Valenti writes:

I’m appreciative that young men like want to curb sexual assault, but anything that puts the onus on women to “discreetly” keep from being raped misses the point. We should be trying to stop rape, not just individually avoid it.

I think it's likely that Valenti is anticipating that, should this fingernail polish become popular, then any woman who doesn't wear it will be blamed and shamed.  "You didn't wear the polish?  Then you deserved what happened to you."  It's exactly the same thing:  what a predator says to prey - the fact that I preyed upon you is your fault.

The thing is, the shaming that the predator gives the prey is part of the system that ensures the predator will have more prey.  Giving the prey the idea that they have no chance makes it easier.  And giving them the illusion that they could have done something but didn't makes the prey feel complicit, and less likely to contest the result.

One of the biggest barriers to prosecution of rape is the level of shame that women feel about having been raped.  Rape, in and of itself, is victim blaming, it would seem.  So at that level, I agree with Valenti.

And yet, at another level, her comment is absurd.  If we were talking about the young man I know who had his teeth knocked out, would it make sense to say,

We should be trying to stop assualt, not just individually avoid it.

I'm far from a neutral party on this.  I regularly teach people how to individually avoid assault, and be safe and whole.  I don't think the sentiment I said makes a lot of sense.  I think we should be both trying to stop assault, and trying to individually avoid it.  I think they work in concert, not in opposition.

Some predators are hard-core.  They will never change, the best we can do is lock them up.  They are sociopaths, and will take advantage whenever they see advantage.  No amount of stern lecturing from me will change their course, they see me as a bleeding-hearted pansy.  (This is not speculation on my part, by the way.)  But I can teach people to spot them and to keep themselves healthy and safe when confronted by these individuals.

However, for this to work, the individual in question has to change.  They have to decide that their own personal safety and well-being is worth some effort, and some change.  That change will likely trigger feelings of shame for a while.  These are groundless feelings, but they are real. These feelings were installed by predators, and they are intended to make you easy prey.  Sadly, the only way through them is to have them - they are much less powerful when confronted than when avoided.

Oh right.  Uber vs. Lyft.  What do I think about that?  I don't know that I think that this particular predation advances any social goal whatsoever, it's just a case of the strong preying on the weak, and justifying it the way predators always justify themselves - by despising the weak. ___

I agree with this analysis. The only people who can sort this out are the peoples of Iraq and Syria. If the United States is looking for allies in addition to the Kurds and Iraqi government then they are going to also need to completely reverse their wrongheaded (and largely Israeli driven) policy of trying to drive Assad out of office in Syria. If there is one element that is truly determined to destroy ISIS, it is the government of Syria.

I was skeptical about claims that these devices would replace most use-cases for big televisions down the track. I flew through 3D Google Earth, along valleys and in between the spires of a church on a hill somewhere, shot up into space and plunged back down to Earth elsewhere. It was fun as hell. But looked crap; limited by resolution and bandwidth. Limits that we will soon crush.

I rode shotgun on a rally car racing at full speed and looked over to the car racing alongside trying to overtake, then glanced behind me at the other cars chasing us, having just jumped over the mound that we crested moments earlier.

I glided around the gardens of a villa, went inside, climbed the stairs and looked out over the gardens and distant horizon from a balcony. All it lacked was resolution and a better UI for navigation; first-person games will be amazing in this thing. People will lose themselves in these worlds. We think people spend too much time playing in virtual game worlds now; we ain't seen nothing yet.

I booted up my recent PhotoSpheres and . . . just wow. This is how PhotoSpheres are meant to be viewed; immersively. I need to shoot them in higher resolution . . . and in stereoscopic 3D. Like with the video: in your face means something different now.

I did all of this in half an hour to try everything out quickly and get a feel for it. I finished with a sore nose where the cardboard had dug in and left a depression in the skin that took 5 minutes to go away, and sore head where the USB cable I had used to wrap and tie the thing to my face had left other depressions. Everything suffered from cheap hardware and issues with resolution and bandwidth. Also lacking were important subtleties with optics, tracking, and presence. But this is as bad as this technology is ever going to get; good dedicated consumer hardware launches next year. I’m forking out another $100 to get a better, more comfortable version for my phone and for the short-term at least, could care less about the resolution and bandwidth limitations.

Think strapping a display to your face is stupid? Give it a try. This thing was $20 and gives a good basic glimpse into the future of entertainment media that not only awaits us but is coming at us like a freight train.

But it is also more focused on silencing climate change debate and protecting corporations that are responsible for emissions and unsustainable practices.

Tracking the campaign against NGOs

The attacks on NGOs have intensified in recent months. Their timing suggests they are not random events.

The Liberal Party federal council in June unanimously recommends stripping NGOs of their ability to receive tax-deductible donations. Tasmanian MP Andrew Nikolic names the Australian Conservation Foundation, the Bob Brown Foundation and the Environmental Defenders’ Offices, accusing them of “untruthful, destructive attacks on legitimate business” and “political activism”.

In June, Coalition MP George Christensen, the member for Dawson in north Queensland, calls for a “cleansing” of the Department of Environment’s list of those organisations eligible to receive tax-deductible gifts. He singles out the Mackay Conservation Group, which is trying to protect the Great Barrier Reef. The group is challenging environment minister Greg Hunt’s approval of dredging at Abbot Point for a coal port.

At the end of the financial year, a number of reports emerge from the environment movement of NGOs being audited by the Tax Office and questioned by the Department of Environment about their right to receive tax-deductible donations.

In April, a review of competition law has the parliamentary secretary for agriculture, Richard Colbeck, talking about repeal of Section 45DD of the Competition and Consumer Act. He wants to take away environmental NGO exemptions from its secondary boycott clauses. Its repeal would stop NGOs from campaigning against the environmental behaviour of companies. Colbeck says: “I think there is an appetite in the government for changing these laws”. He claims that the backbench rural committee and “quite a number of the ministry” want the competition review to take away the exemption. Later, some submissions (from the Australian Forest Products Association, for example) echo this proposed change. The review’s draft report is due in September.

In June, the Minerals Council of Australia releases a paper by IPA senior fellow Sinclair Davidson, entitled A Critique of the Coal Divestment Campaign. Davidson welcomes the Abbott government’s “announced plans” to remove the Section 45DD exemption “to provide a level playing field and hold environmental groups to the same standard as business”.

Davidson in his paper also claims that NGOs are breaking Section 1041E of the Corporations Act by encouraging individuals and organisations to stop investing in fossil fuel companies and their financiers.

In December, attorney-general George Brandis removes funding from the national legal network of Environmental Defenders Offices.

While not an environmental NGO, the national network of community legal centres is collateral damage and has also been targeted by Brandis. The centres' service agreements are changed to prevent them publicly suggesting legal reforms.

The May budget abolishes Grants to Voluntary Environment, Sustainability and Heritage Organisations. This grants scheme has been helping state conservation councils and their member groups, as well as hundreds of grassroots groups throughout the country, since 1973.

The Coalition moves to abolish the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission. The NGO sector had hoped this relatively new body would improve accountability, as well as reduce government red tape. Its abolition would change the regulation of NGOs – a worrying prospect when the government is trying to silence their voices.

This is the sad joke about privatization. A public monopoly even when privatized is still a monopoly.

If Australians wonder why Internet and many other services are more expensive in their country than anywhere else in the world they need only look to Telstra. What's interesting is that Telstra maintains their high pricing even if only delivering traffic inside the country. Given that Australia is one large land mass with relatively concentrated population centers, it's difficult to justify the pricing based on anything other than Telstra's market power. In regions like North America where there is increasing consolidation of networks, Australia's experience with Telstra provides a cautionary tale.
