Alister Macintyre42,106Do not confuse this circle with the one I have on Native American Indian interests.  My India Circle has people whose lives have either passed thru the great nation of India, are there now, or interested in India.  My interests range world wide, some nations more than others.  I recently started an Asia circle, and tried to pour into it my circles for Australia, China, Japan, India, some other countries, but bumped into another of G+ silly ceilings.  I have circles for several major regions of the world, including Middle East, Eu-W, and Eu-other.  I also have circles for specific nations like Germany and Haiti.2014-03-27 18:26:53148002CC G+

Dallas McMillan7,412Circle from the land downunder - Australia's top 200 PlussersWho are Australia's most followed people on Google Plus?I've put together this circle of Australia's top 200 profiles (by follower numbers - not engagement - some aren't particularly active) on Google Plus. It's pretty interesting to see the types of profiles which make the cut. Here is my quick overview:By far the most dominant characteristic of the top 200 are photographers - professional and amateur. The other notable individuals are a couple of cricketers in the top 10, a smattering of celebrity chefs, musicians, writers, artists, models and other celebrities. There are also fair numbers of Google employees, IT workers, social media and marketing types as well as a decent number of scientists and mathematicians. The only politician I noticed was Malcolm Turnbull - the Prime Minister and Leader of the opposition are conspicuous by their absence.I got the list from +CircleCount http://www.circlecount.com/au/profileslist/ and I've made a few tweaks - removing a couple of profiles that were inactive or had moved away from Australia. There were a number of others which probably don't belong as they now work in the USA or elsewhere.  #australia   #australianphotographers   #circleshare  I've notified members of the circle - let me know if you don't want to be listed.2013-08-04 14:24:522009213CC G+

+Yonatan Zunger misses the elephant in the room. All superhero movies, no matter which comic universe they come from, are utter shit.

This pseudo-thread pretty much summarizes the difference between Marvel and DC's attitude about their audiences: DC considers it far too risky to show shocking, foreign things in their movies, such as "women," "people of color," or "LGBT characters," especially as primary protagonists, whereas Marvel... well, they have decided that they are going to do whatever the fuck they feel like.

So why am I sharing this now, a few weeks after it spread on the Internets? Because +The Verge decided to run the numbers to see just how they're doing: http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/22/6056617/marvels-movie-business-is-crushing-dcs-and-its-not-close

Turns out Marvel has raked in something like double what DC has from its movies.

(Unsurprisingly, because DC's movies have been averaging "tedious and boring." Seriously, Superman is about as interesting as listening to a lecture about Truth, Justice, the American Way, and the Neitzschean Übermensch from the PR office of the Boy Scouts, without even the homoerotic subtext of Batman's three-way relationship with Robin and the Joker to leaven it. And I think that this attitude of DC's is no small part of why.)

(Also, vi is better than EMACS)

In related news, LEGO finally decided to ship a non-pink set with women in it -- their "Research Institute" set (http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Research-Institute-21110). Except good luck getting it, because the entire production run sold out almost instantly.

And yet, I keep hearing companies explaining why their marketing always slants towards showing a bunch of white men, with scantily clad white women for decoration, and the occasional "exotic" in the background, because it sells so well, they tell us. The coveted demographic of 18-35 white, middle-class men won't buy anything else. There's no market for other things, because people from all the other groups will buy white, middle-class men, but not vice-versa, and there surely isn't enough money that isn't in the hands of white, middle-class men to matter.

You know what I call it when someone comes up with a business plan like that? A chance to make a lot of money at their expense, that's what.

h/t to +Kimberly Chapman, +Capin Chip, and quite a few others for the pseudo-thread -- I unfortunately can't find any reliable original source for it. ___+Yonatan Zunger misses the elephant in the room. All superhero movies, no matter which comic universe they come from, are utter shit.

A: Wait until the Right implodes. It will happen sooner than you think.

Good article but I'm a little more pessimistic. As they say, the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent. So too the intellectual bankruptcy of the right wing.

I bought one of these for my Nexus 5. Apart from replacing my conventional wallet for cash and cards, the best feature is the auti-wake feature which wakes up the phone when the cover is flipped open, no need to use the on switch. (It works by having a couple of magnets sown into the cover).

I actually was looking at this video because I couldn't work out what the two tiny pockets were for. Sim cards, mystery solved. These are really useful if you do any international travelling because roaming is ridiculously expensive. Just get a sim for the country you are visiting.

From today's Crikey:

The threat to Bill Shorten from unproven rape allegations may lie as much in them not being used against him as in any media smear campaigns.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten’s decision to identify himself as the subject of a police investigation into sexual assault allegations when he was a teenager was made in anticipation that News Corporation would attempt to use the story against him, Labor figures say.

The lengthy investigation concluded this week, with police deciding not to recommend charges in relation to events involving Shorten and an unnamed woman at a Young Labor event in the 1980s.

Yesterday, Shorten confirmed what had long been discussed on social media, that he was the target of the allegations.

The Australian newspaper has run several pieces on the investigation into a “senior Labor figure” over the last year. Most pertinently, it ran a column by right-wing industrial relations columnist Grace Collier in The Weekend Australian last Saturday, which warned that even if charges were not laid, it would still “be a disaster for Labor”. Collier, who famously claimed that prime minister Julia Gillard was in no position to complain of misogyny because she showed too much cleavage in Parliament, collaborated on the hounding of Gillard over the AWU corruption matter from the 1990s with far-Right blogger and sacked shock jock Michael Smith, who has enthusiastically aired the rape allegations about Shorten.

The column was seen by some in Labor as a blunt warning that, regardless of the truth of the allegations, News Corp would run the same sort of smear campaign against him that it ran against Gillard, which continued for over a year despite a complete absence of any specific allegations against her.

However, a direct attack designed to destroy Shorten, who has proved unexpectedly competitive against a government that has spent a year stumbling from error to error, may not have been the only thing playing on Labor minds. One of the key elements of Rupert Murdoch’s success, according to The Guardian’s Nick Davies, is his ability to secure cooperation from key figures based on the threat that they will be punished via personal attack in his newspapers. As Davies wrote in July:

“At its worst, everybody in the power elite has heard that the punishment can amount to crude blackmail. They have all heard the stories about how Murdoch editors have safes containing dossiers of evidence about the private lives of politicians and competing businessmen; and that Murdoch and his people agree to suppress these gross embarrassments in exchange for yet more favours. There are specific rumours — about a senior figure in British sport who is said to have complied with Murdoch’s plans for TV rights when he was informed thatThe Sun was ready to tell its readers that he had had sexual relationships with young men; and about a middle-ranking Labour politician who is said to have spoken up on behalf of Murdoch’s UK newspapers after journalists obtained a video of him having sex with a prostitute while the prostitute’s husband watched. It is true that the sports administrator and the Labour politician offered their support to Murdoch. Whether they did so out of fear of the dossiers — or whether the dossiers even exist — is not so clear. The power is in the belief and in the fear it engenders. Which is widespread.”

In this context, the allegations against Shorten, even if police had decided not to proceed with them, were perhaps more damaging if they remained unused by News Corp, kept in the safe, with an implied threat that they could be pulled out if Shorten was seen to be a threat to the company, or if a specific favour was needed. And the threat can always remain implied — it is given force by the few occasions it is publicly delivered on. As Davies notes:

“The power to conceal or reveal sensitive personal information turns out to be just like the power of the bully in the school playground. The bully need only batter one or two children for the fact of his power to be established: fear will then ensure that the others do all they can to placate him.”

Whether in response to the prelude to an attack or to prevent the threat of future attack, Shorten has opted to attempt to short-circuit the issue by coming out, unexpectedly, and on his own terms, to discuss it. It’s true that the allegations were already widely circulating online; this is not the 1980s, when mainstream media journalists and editors could act as gatekeepers of personal information about politicians. But it’s a high-risk play in that it elevates what until now has amounted to social media abuse into a mainstream media issue that can be openly discussed. Shorten himself has now made it the subject of public debate. But it also undermines the threat from Murdoch on the issue: his papers can still run a smear campaign against Shorten, but he has got on the front foot and ensured it can’t be used to blackmail him.

How much the decision costs him remains to be seen. But for the moment, Shorten’s initiative looks the smarter long-term play than staying silent.___

As I've said before, the euro is the gold standard with moral authority. And that last part is the problem. Europeans don't think the euro represents civilization, but rather the defense of it. It's a paper monument to peace and prosperity that's made the latter impossible. So the eurocrats who have spent their lives building it are never going to tear it down, despite the fact that, as it's currently constructed, the euro is standing between them and recovery.

I just ordered one.

Australian buyers should skip Amazon (they wont ship to Australia) and order from here instead http://goo.gl/YK95vZ

If you own an Android cell phone, you've probably taken few photospheres, which are difficult to take and pain in a butt to watch. But fear not! Google released some time ago #cardboard  project (to be exact during last Google I/O 2014), and now it is becoming very popular. Reason, it's very cheap, less than $30 and bringing you immersive experience like Oculus Rift, but for fraction of the cost. I know you will argue speed and responsiveness of  Oculus Rift is not even comparable with CardBoard, but for watching  photospheres and virtual tours CardBoard off the chard. Btw, +Google just released Photo Sphere Camera app for iOS.
One more interesting part about CardBoard vs Oculus Rift, resolution is the same on both 1080p/2, however Oculus Rift has peripheral view, which achieved by optical distortion. So, as result I am anticipating to get new #Nexus6  which should have better resolution and density - yes we can see individual pixels on the screen, but who's complaining toy cost me $25 from +Amazon.com http://goo.gl/ZHPYaV___I just ordered one.

Newscorp leak: Aussie papers in trouble

It's hard not to be pleased, although I suppose we should be a little sad for the 1,000 odd jobs lost. Few interesting revelations. Basically all of the profit from the popular Melbourne Herald Sun is offset by the $30 million the Australian loses each year. I'm not sure if we should be pleased by the trend though. From today's Crikey:

Leaked documents show a forest of brackets in News Corp’s Australian newspapers, withThe Australian particularly in the red. How long can the house that Rupert built sustain such body blows?

Internal operating accounts for the Australian arm of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation show alarming revenue and profit falls across the metropolitan newspapers in fiscal 2013, and widening losses at flagship broadsheet The Australian.

Combined with the sharp earnings drop already reported in 2013-14, and with circulation and advertising revenues continuing to decline, the accounts suggest News Corp’s Australian newspapers, including the national, metro and regional publications, will struggle to break even this financial year.

The confidential operating accounts for News Corp Australia have never been seen by investors and provide a detailed picture of a print business in rapid decline, with swingeing cost-cuts, cover price increases, new digital subscriptions and digital advertising failing to make up for the loss of revenues from advertising and circulation.

Crikey has received a copy of the last weekly financial statements for 2012-13, which provide line-by-line, year-on-year comparisons across the business, from a well-placed source concerned about misrepresentation of the profitability of News Corp’s Australian newspapers.

The accounts raise the question of how long the rest of the News Corp empire can carry the underperforming Australian newspapers business.

The accounts were produced last year just as Murdoch spun off his troubled print media assets worldwide from the profitable Fox film and cable television empire in the United States, in the wake of the UK phone-hacking scandal.

News Corp was spun out on June 28, 2013, from the renamed 21st Century Fox, and houses mastheads including The Wall Street Journaland New York Post in the US, the Times andSun in the UK, News’ Australian newspapers, plus book publisher Harper Collins, Foxtel and Fox Sports in Australia, and a 62% stake in ASX-listed REA Group, which operates the successful http://realestate.com.au website.

“The Australian newspapers are dragging on recovering newspaper operations in the US and UK, as well as divisions reporting profit growth, such as book publishing.”

Listed on the NASDAQ and the ASX, News Corporation, valued at $11 billion, goes to considerable lengths to avoid breaking revenue or earnings down by country or masthead, lumping its worldwide newspaper operations plus other businesses together into the “news and information” segment, which accounts for 71% of the group’s total revenue, and only offering finer detail selectively.

Crikey can reveal that, amid a forest of negative brackets, revenue from News Corp’s Australian newspapers fell 14% to $1.9 billion in 2012-13, with circulation revenue dropping 5% and advertising revenue falling 18%, while operating income fell 67% to $94 million.

Within the division, The Australian stands out as the worst performer: revenues dropped 20% from $135 million to 108 million in 2012-13, while operating income fell 41% from a loss of $19 million to a loss of $27 million. After depreciation, the masthead’s operating loss fell to $30 million.

The profit drop in newspapers was only partly offset by growth in other operations like REA Group and Fox Sports, with total operating income falling 38% to $221 million. After income from investments including Foxtel, the group recorded a total profit before interest or tax of $367 million, down 28%.

After a recent visit to celebrate The Australian’s 50th anniversary, Rupert Murdoch tweeted he’d had an “exciting week in Australia with great team digging company out of many holes” but the heavy falls in print have continued if not accelerated through 2013-14. This is confirmed in News Corp’s most recent quarterly earnings update and annual report, showing the Australian newspapers are dragging on recovering newspaper operations in the US and UK, as well as divisions reporting profit growth, such as book publishing.

News reported that earnings before interest tax depreciation and amortisation from Australian newspapers fell by US $67 million in 2013-14, or $73 million — which by Crikey’s estimate represents roughly an 80% fall on the previous year, nearly wiping out the division’s entire operating income. The division dragged heavily on the news and information segment, which reported a 16% drop in EBITDA in 2013-14.

The operating accounts show Melbourne’sHerald Sun was the mainstay of News Corp in Australia, with the weekday paper generating revenues of $250 million in 2012-13, down 13.5% on the year before, and operating income of $35 million, down 41%. Revenue for the Sunday edition fell 17% to $75 million, while operating income fell 31% to $21 million.

Of the major tabloids the weekday edition of News’ monopoly masthead in Brisbane, TheCourier-Mail, suffered the steepest falls, with revenue dropping 18% to $158 million while operating income fell 68% to just $17 million. The Sunday Mail revenues fell 15% to $71 million and operating income fell 33% to $20 million.

The weekday edition of Sydney’s Daily Telegraph was another weak performer, with the lowest profit margins at 5%, with revenue dropping 14% to $160 million while operating income fell 65% to just $8 million. The Sunday Telegraph revenues fell 15% to $94 million and operating income fell 53% to $7 million.

At that level Adelaide’s Advertiser’s weekday editions alone made a much stronger contribution than the Tele in 2012-13, generating revenues of $138 million (down 15%) and operating income of $22 million (down 47%) — without counting the Sunday Mail.

The financial performance of the newspapers has only worsened. In its latest accounts News Corp revealed that overall revenue from the Australian newspapers had fallen by another 18% or US $359 million in 2013-14, compared with the previous year, made up of US $314 million decline in advertising revenue and a US $45 million decline in circulation revenue. Of that, News said US $199 million — a bit over half — reflected the impact of a weaker Australian dollar versus the greenback, which pointed to an 8% decline in revenue in local currency to below $1.8 billion.

On News Corp’s quarterly earnings dial-in chief executive Robert Thomson conceded there were advertising headwinds in in Australia but said there were signs of a turnaround, with “green shoots on the Nullarbor”. In the June 2014 quarter Australian newspapers ad revenue fell 11% in local currency terms, which was a slight improvement on the mid-single-digit falls in the March quarter. SMI data show advertising revenue aggregated across New Corp’s mastheads fell 18% in the first six months of 2014.

Great post, read the whole thing.

Slate Star Codex decries societal supremacism, the bizarre meme, commonly found in societies, that a society is a better way to live than whatever people did before societies came along.

If my patient, the one with the brain damage, were back in the Environment of Evolutionary Adaptedness, in a nice tribe with Dunbar’s number of people, there would be no problem.

Maybe his cognitive problems would make him a slightly less proficient hunter than someone else, but whatever, he could always gather.

Maybe his emotional control problems would give him a little bit of a handicap in tribal politics, but he wouldn’t get arrested for making a scene, he wouldn’t get fired for not sucking up to his boss enough, he wouldn’t be forced to live in a tiny apartment with people he didn’t necessarily like who were constantly getting on his nerves. He might get in a fight and end up with a spear through his gut, but in that case his problems would be over anyway.

Otherwise he could just hang out and live in a cave and gather roots and berries and maybe hunt buffalo and participate in the appropriate tribal bonding rituals like everyone else.

But society came and paved over the place where all the roots and berry plants grew and killed the buffalo and dynamited the caves and declared the tribal bonding rituals Problematic. This increased productivity by about a zillion times, so most people ended up better off. The only ones who didn’t were the ones who for some reason couldn’t participate in it.

(if you’re one of those people who sees red every time someone mentions evolution or cavemen, imagine him as a dockworker a hundred years ago, or a peasant farmer a thousand)

Society got where it is by systematically destroying everything that could have supported him and replacing it with things that required skills he didn’t have. Of course it owes him when he suddenly can’t support himself. Think of it as the ultimate use of eminent domain; a power beyond your control has seized everything in the world, it had some good economic reasons for doing so, but it at least owes you compensation!

This is also the basis of my support for a basic income guarantee. Imagine an employment waterline, gradually rising through higher and higher levels of competence. In the distant past, maybe you could be pretty dumb, have no emotional continence at all, and still live a pretty happy life. As the waterline rises, the skills necessary to support yourself comfortably become higher and higher. Right now most people in the US who can’t get college degrees – which are really hard to get! – are just barely hanging on, and that is absolutely a new development. Soon enough even some of the college-educated won’t be very useful to the system. And so on, until everyone is a burden.

Does it seem likely that people are paid according to what they are worth? We define what something is worth as what someone will pay for it, so it's trivially true, but also meaningless.

It would definitely take more power literacy, more ability to ascend the lofty heights, because there are less of the big pipes, and they're more attractive.

But it does say there's nothing intrinsically better/special about you based on hierarchical level.

Good info. I really need to get one of these.

Things I've learned about my Aeropress
http://aerobie.com/products/aeropress.htm

Ignore all the obsessing about using it upside down, pre-watering the filter and so on. Only 3 things matter, the quality of the coffee, the temperature of the water and emptying it as soon after use as possible so the rubber bung doesn't harden and lose it's seal.

Coffee.
I like a good strong Italian style taste without it being too aggressive.

- Mainstream. Tescos Italian Blend, Lavazza Black, Carte Noire. These are all perfectly serviceable, easily available, every day, fine filter or expresso grinds that just work and are predictable.

- Algerian Coffee Shop, Soho, London at http://www.algcoffee.co.uk/

"Formula Rossa" their main blend that they use for the take away coffee they serve in the shop. Straight forwards and recommended. Ideal for an Americano
"Cafe Torino" For a stronger Expresso/Ristretto cup, try this one. It's a bit more aggressive than the Formula Rossa.
"Velluto Nero" After Dinner Expresso. Gorgeous but too much for every day drinking.

A note about grinds. I find a straight expresso grind works best. In the Algerian Coffee shop that's a "4" on their machine. Finer than filter or french press, but not so fine that you get finings and dust in the bottom of the cup.

Water Temperature.
After the choice of coffee this is the single biggest factor in the quality of the end product. You need to aim for 80-85C. This is tricky without spending huge amounts on clever kettles or messing around with thermometers. Any higher than that and you'll "burn" the grounds and make the coffee more bitter. The simple trick is to boil about 750ml of water (1/2 a kettle?) and then wait 30-60 seconds after the kettle turns itself off. So don't start assembling the Aeropress, coffee, filter, mug and so on until the kettle has boiled and by the time you're ready to pour in the water, 60 secs will have gone by and you'll be about right.

Spares.
http://www.hasbean.co.uk
http://ablebrewing.com
Rubber bungs, filter caps, filters, stainless filter disks, tote bags, etc, etc. The stainless filters didn't really work for me. The paper filters are cheap and easier and just work. There's a rubber travel cap but it's a bit inconvenient and only really works for storing a few days supplies of filters in the plunger.

Cleaning.
Just empty the Aeropress immediately in the bin and wipe the base of the rubber bung under the tap. Then store it either in two pieces or with the piston all the way through so the bung isn't under pressure. Otherwise the bung will eventually take a set and won't seal any more. It's pretty much self cleaning so just a quick rinse is all that's needed.

Recipes.
Don't bother with all the complication. Don't worry about pressing air though the grounds. Don't bother with the upside down method. If your cup is too small to fit the aeropress in the top, use the hexagonal funnel.

White Americano or filter coffee.
This is the typical every day mug of coffee.  Put on your 750ml (ish) of water in the kettle. When it boils get the mug, aeropress and stuff out of the cupboard. Assemble the paper filter and cap and set it on the mug. Add a 15ml scoop of grounds. Fill slowly with hot water to the 3 mark. Give it a quick swirl with a spoon to settle the grounds. Wait till it drips so the surface is down to the 2 mark, say 20 seconds. Insert the plunger and press gently down till the grounds are squashed. Add a splash of milk. Empty the aeropress and wipe. Done! Enjoy!

Double expresso.
As above but 30ml of coffee grounds which is the scoop that comes with the Aeropress. Fill with water to the 2 mark. Let it drop to the 1 mark and press.

Thermos.
I have a stubby 15fl oz, 400ml thermos which holds about 2 mugs worth. 30ml or 45ml of grounds, fill to the 4 mark. Press when it drops to 3. Add milk till it's the right colour. Top up with boiling water.

Improvements.
I struggle to think of any! I think there's potentially a redesign that makes it easier to travel with the kit and a week's supply of filters and coffee. Perhaps the cap could screw onto the other end of the plunger.

Just occasionally the seal doesn't quite work between the main cylinder and the cap. I'm not quite sure where it leaks from but it can lead to dribbles down the side of the mug.

Anyway. If you haven't tried one and you like coffee then get an Aeropress. for making one or two cups of coffee it's way better than Cafetieres, Mocha stove machines, drip filters and so on. And it's considerably cheaper and easier than expresso machines. And even if the pod machines are convenient, they're just WRONG. The old school filter coffee machines still work best for 4 mugs and upwards.

So I really don't think there's anything better for small quantities.___Good info. I really need to get one of these.

They think that the Greens need grow to take up the mantle of the Left social democratic program that has been effectively abandoned by the Australian Labor party.
While I understand the sentiment, personally I think they should stick with the name because too often has the Left pushed the environment to the bottom of its priorities whereas it should always be front a centre. It is inextricably connected with social equity.

The australian Greens are considering changing their name. At the link are essays for and against.

I think it's a great brand, and shedding the narrow environmentalism connotations that it's had. A brand which is a colour is something you can work with, surely? "Labor" is also a narrow single-interest name, which seems to have shed that narrow distinction over time (and now means, well, nothing).

But if I were renaming The Greens, I'd consider "The Progressives", or simply "The Left".___Some members of the Australian Greens are concerned about the narrow, issues-based image that the name of the party projects to the electorate. While there are good historical reasons for the name (see 19th century liberalism), the reality is that the Liberal party has now shifted so far to the right that the name serves not only to confuse it's opponents but its supporters as well (see Murdochian Andrew Bolt railing against "liberals" while at the same time praising Liberals.

As former Liberal primeminister has Malcolm Fraser amply pointed out, the modern Liberal party would be unrecognisable to its founders. It is today a conservative, Tory party. It is a reactionary and illiberal party.

I recommend a change of name as soon as possible.
