In a world of quick-and-dirty connections, there's a unique opportunity presented by our most recent followers. Almost any engagement after the first day people follow you is sure to make a big impression - because it's so unusual.  While winning someone's followership is good - building on that initial interest with a personal engagement makes online connection far, far more meaningful and valuable.

(I might add independent engagement in the public square, whether explicitly promotional or not)

How would you put it?

Anybody have any idea why my wife's browser might stop playing netflix every 10 mins to buffer for like 5 mins? It's maddening. Little else is running, but there is a Kernel task (0) running on her Mac that seems to be taking up a lot of memory. :(

My dog and I are saddened by this.

#metacognitiveworkhack: I was thinking about something today and it prompted me to ask a lot of big questions. So I opened up an Evernote note and I wrote out all my thoughts, some questions and my working answers to them. Then I set an alarm for one week later to see if a weeks worth of experiences would lead to different answers to those questions.

Paul Starr, the distinguished Princeton scholar, has put the matter succinctly: “By undermining the economic basis of professional reporting and by fragmenting the public, [the digital revolution] has weakened the ability of the press to act as an effective agent of public accountability. If we take seriously the idea that an independent press serves an essential democratic function, its institutional distress may weaken democracy itself. And that is the danger that confronts us.”___

Via +Ed Chi, whom you should know about

This is fun and useful, a form of instant answers from processing structured data from the web. It's trickier than it sounds because of the noise in the data, the fact that it's usually structured for human and not machine consumption, and that most of it is uninteresting so you need to do some harsh interestingness/relevance filtering to only surface the few relevant bits.  I've been tracking research papers on this for a long time. It's great to see it see go live in the real world.___Via +Ed Chi, whom you should know about

And on the other hand, the same is fun to think about as a user: a discrete package of joy.
