Nexus 7 Not Charging Fix

If you let your Nexus 7 go completely dead, to the point where it has virtually no juice left, you may have issues charging. This bug has plagued me a few times in the past. Here's the fix:

To charge a dead Nexus 7:

1.  Plug-in your dead N7 to a wall charger. (Jump immediately to step 2.)
2.  Immediately after plugging it in, press Volume Down and Power at the same time.
3.  Once in the bootloader menu, use Volume Down until you see “Power Off Device.”
4.  Choose that option with the Power button.
5.  Once your device is off, unplug the charger and then plug it back into the device.
6.  You should now see the battery meter (pictured above) with your device returning to life.

When did the G+ app for Android start showing this message below the refresh button? First time I've seen it, but it makes sense (even though the function of it should be obvious to anyone who has ever used a browser, really).

Fix Facebook with Chrome Extensions

Some of you may know that I really don't like Facebook... at all... but many people still use it by choice or necessity (even I go on maybe once or twice a month on average).

It's no secret Facebook's website has become rotten with ads and ad-like content that just gets in the way of seeing what you really want to see, and while it would be very easy for me to just let people get exhausted by it, it's only fair I should tell you that the experience can be greatly improved with the right extensions for the Google Chrome browser, so here is what I use to block all (and I do mean all) ads and Facebook tracking:

Microsoft's Double Standard

According to Microsoft, it's bad that Google makes money targeting users with ads, but okay that they do the exact same thing, and it's bad for privacy that users can have a single account across services, but Microsoft is "better" because they do the same thing and allow you to login with that paragon of privacy protection Facebook.

Someone please take the crack pipe from whomever is in charge of this ridiculously hypocritical smear campaign and tell the Microsofties that great products talk and mud slinging doesn't win consumer favor.

While they're wasting their time on the Scroogled campaign, Google is one of the most trusted brands on the market and satisfaction with Microsoft is on the decline.

5mn HTC Ones Sold in About a Month

HTC brought their 'A Game' to their new flagship One smartphone, but the question until now was, "Will anyone care?"

It looks like that question has been answered, with some 5mn units sold since it launched about a month ago. This is still trailing the Samsung Galaxy S4, but not by nearly as much as one might expect.

Is this the start of a turnaround by the one-time King of Android smartphones, and a sign that competition is returning to the Android market? Time will tell, but it would be hard to spin this as bad news.

One thing is certain: HTC has raised the bar for all competitors with solid specs and design, and the One is perhaps the most exciting smartphone on the market today.

I can't feel anything but disgusted, even nauseated, as some of the great companies born and nurtured in these United States, including Apple and yes also Google and Microsoft, do everything they can to avoid paying back into our society or frankly any society in which they do business.

That they seem to have no shame blatantly lying about what they're doing and pulling out the tired old "wealth creator" tropes only makes it that much worse.

Marissa Mayer is (Almost) Right: There Are No Professional Photographers

Call me an apologist, but I actually see some homespun truth in +Marissa Mayer's statement.   Of course there are still professional photographers, but there's not much of a future there in an era where increasingly anyone can pass as 'professional' with the right smartphone, filters, and server-side image processing.

It reminds me of a recent +The Daily Show segment with Asif Mandvi (http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-may-9-2013/stay-out-of-school ; check around 2:30), in which a young college student fails to see the parallel between a degree in illustration and one in photography.

Sad end of an era it may be, but the days of professional photography as anything but a niche professional market were numbered from the day Instagram launched in the App Store.

Smart Tech for Guns?

Rep. John Tierney (D-Mass) wants to require all firearms to have "personalization technology" that prevents unauthorized users from firing their weapons.

This sounds like a great idea on paper, but in practice would have some serious issues, like the need to charge whatever electronic components are used to enable this feature, as well as potential questions of liability (if the system malfunctions, for example, who is legally culpable, the owner, the manufacturer, the company that makes the personalization technology?).

More problematic is his suggestion that all existing firearms should have to be retrofitted with this technology.  Is this even practical, or possible, and if so, who is going to enforce applying this to the millions of firearms already legally owned, and how would it be enforced?

Google Play Games Circle

I'm building a private Circle for people on Google+ who use Google Play Games Service.  I have set my games to only show users from that Circle, and to only show updates to that Circle.  I have no desire to "spam" non-gamers with game updates, or to share information on non-gamers in my Circles with those apps.

Into the Dead: Best Zombie Game Ever?

I've played a lot of zombie games for Android, PC, PlayStation  and other platforms.  This may be my favorite.  The plot is very simple: you are running full speed dodging and fighting your way through an oncoming zombie hoard, in a heavy fog.  The farther you run, the denser the hoard becomes, as the landscape around you changes from fields, to crops, to forests, etc...

It's that very simplicity that appeals to me.  It's fast paced, nerve wracking, and at no point are you made to feel like the hero of your own adventure, you're just a desperate survivor trying to hold on as long as you can.

If you're a fan of zombie games, I can't recommend this one enough.  Enjoy!

There is still a lot to do, and here are some areas where I think Yahoo! must make strong moves to ensure they become relevant again in the world of consumer web technology.

3D Printed Food: Coming to a Kitchen Near You?

Under a grant from NASA, Systems & Materials Research Corporation is working to develop a food synthesiser using 3D Printers and dehydrated organic molecules. What's the first food (apart from a proof-of-concept synthetic chocolate they already created) they're trying to produce? Why Pizza, of course, what else?

In addition to applications for long-term space exploration (the reason NASA is interested), this technology could be valuable as the population of the world begins to exceed its natural nutritional output.

That said, I'd sooner be dead than have only printed food for the rest of my life. What do you think?

Hard Evidence for Multiverse Theory Found?

Scientists have found possible evidence for the gravitational influence of neighboring universes on our own. That, or possibly falsified the Big Bang Theory, time will tell. If the former, it would be the first physical evidence of multiple universes (until now the theory has relied on mathematical models rather than solid data).

Confirmed: Yahoo! Acquires Tumblr

Promises "not to screw it up" (hey, give them credit for admitting past mistakes), will run Tumblr as a separate company (no change in leadership or overall trajectory) with access to Yahoo!'s infrastructure for better search, ads, and personalization, plus access to push Tumblr content to Yahoo!'s userbase.

I can't play my +Google Play Music Library correctly on my Acer C7 +Google Chrome book anymore.  The sound quality is garbage, it plays everything too fast, not loud enough, at the wrong pitch, etc...  Songs are barely even recognizable anymore.  And there seems to be no way to report it from the Google Play site itself, because it keeps asking for the OS version but Chrome OS isn't on the list.

Anyone else having this problem?

Update: Disabling the HTML5 Audio Lab fixed it.  This appears to be a problem specific to the C7 as far as I know.

Yahoo Buying Tumblr for $1bn?

Winning over young users to Yahoo! has been a priority for +Marissa Mayer during her tenure as CEO, but so far its user base remains largely older. With Tumblr becoming more popular with teens than Facebook, an acquisition could immediately help turn things around for the fading tech giant, if they don't manage to kill it like they did Flickr. (Yahoo! does seem to love acquiring social networks that end with an 'r' preceded by a consonant, don't they?)

+J.C. Kendall thinks Google and Samsung are leading the way towards communication infrastructures that break down the artificially-imposed barriers put in place by ISP's and carriers.  I think he's right about that, and that anyone who wonders why we'd need gigabit network speeds doesn't understand the first thing about the "virtuous cycle" of network speeds and internet developers.

What do you think?  Are you happy with what you're paying for your current connection speeds?  Or are you itching for some Google Fiber/5G LTE love?
