When I see all this excitement over Matt Cutts' announcement of new Penguin rollout it makes me cringe. Any SEO consultant worth their salt should not even be phased by this.
Why do I say this? Because I believe in holistic SEO. That might sound like a hippy term to describe a high-tech skill set but I have found this to be the best way to describe what we do.
SEO should be all about achieving results through the attribution of ACTUAL value. It should not be about technical short cuts, white hat or black hat, to achieve great rankings.
What is your intent? Is it all about making more money for the sake of making more money? Or is it about providing value to your community, promoting your service or product which truly is worth the price you are asking for it?
Delivering true value, in the form of informative content, excellent customer service and great... more »

SEOs: Take pride in your work or don't do it
"There are real people behind those numbers you put into your spreadsheet..."
Some SEOs and internet marketers forget the human side of the business. I don't mean the old "for people not search engines" thing. I mean the actual people whose lives are impacted by the work you do.
Jobs are created and lost based on what we do. Real people. Livelihoods.
Like +Greg Habermann describes in this article, I have been encountering way too many people who have been screwed by fraudsters and incompetent SEO providers.
And it isn't just the cheap fly by night "rank number one for everything overnight" scams, but large well known companies that just don't seem to care... or maybe they have no clue why they are failing their clients.
Then they just blame Google. "Oh G... more »

Preemptive Disavow for Negative SEO?
I have a question about the disavow tool and negative SEO which I would like to post to this fine community of SEO scholars and theorists.
I have a site that is currently experiencing a negative SEO attack. Someone is hurling all kinds of bad links at the site - keyword anchored comment spam, social bookmarking sites I never heard of, wikis, appspot proxy scrapers, some forum profiles, and there are even a couple of spun spamblog network posts.
I would not be too concerned, except this has been going on for over a month and shows no signs of slowing. If nothing else comes of this, I will now have a much better idea about which types of links are found by which crawlers (AHREFs, Majestic and WMT are all showing quite different new links).
So my question is: Should I preemptively disavow the links I have found, even ... more »

It's true for G+ & true for any network. If you've read the article & decided to share it, look at who the author is & mention them (not just publication/brand). Most people don't do that. This recognition will help you pay attention & get to know people (and will help your networking).

What the hell is wrong with some people? Can't succeed online legitimately? Be a criminal and hack other sites for your spam purposes.

2013-04-04 16:07:44 (14 comments, 2 reshares, 5 +1s)
I doubt anyone has analyzed this, but is Google using historical authorship info at all?
For example, what happens if a site owner decides that he needs to look like an authority on a topic, and changes all of the author credits on his site to his own, even though they had been previously credited to other writers? Will the new "author" get full credit, thereby screwing over the actual author (assuming original author cares about it)?

Personalization, location awareness and search engine results
Social signals and actual popularity of a page or website are becoming a key search ranking factor and in some situations are favored over traditional signals like links, keywords, anchor text and that sort of thing.
If you are focused on controlling exact keyword ranking positions, you probably aren't going to like this, but +Rand Fishkin does a superb job of explaining how personalization affects Google's search results in this week's Whiteboard Friday video at +SEOmoz.
"…if you are a business and you're thinking about doing marketing and SEO, you have to be aware that these changes are taking place. It's not productive or valuable to get frustrated that not everyone is seeing the same auto-suggest results, the same results in the same order. You just have to be aware that, hey... more »

Are you losing money? Missing/Incorrect business listings can hurt!
No idea why +Andrew Shotland (AKA The man with the face) hasn't pushed this out hard ... but I certainly will.
He was invovled in research to look at the state of businesses and location information (directories etc.). In that report, they discovered that a huge number of businesses are missing out on local traffic, and that it could amount to more than $10 Billion!
Have a read (it's short/light) - look at the groovy image.
How many of you haven't got listed?
How many of you haven't claimed your listings on the top directories?
How many of you have got incorrect Names/Addresses/Phonenumbers in some key places?
Worth double checking, right?

Google Authorship markup and "Author Rank" are quite a hot topic now and everybody wants to be part of the next big thing. Lots of people just want their picture in the SERPs for the increase in click-through.
Have you thought about what your Google+ profile may look like if someone clicks through to that instead of the page on your website that you wanted them to go to?

Some people still don't get G+.
"I don't like Google Plus because I don't get as many +1s as I get Likes on Facebook".
Here's the thing about that: People on FB will Like just about anything, just because they are your "friend". G+ is still pretty much a nerdy niche, and it takes a bit more to impress.
And it seems like people are still trying to do old fashioned one-way communication with social media: "Here's my stuff. Am I not the greatest thing ever? Now Like it and share it!" Then they don't contribute to whatever community they may fit into, interact with peers, or anything else that would resemble a real "social" interaction.
They check back later and think "Nobody saw it". They did see it. They just didn't care.

We don’t need to hide behind the facade of an advanced computer program we’re predicting because most of us aren’t doing that. Most are doing actual SEO work. Another problem, though, is that some of us aren’t..." That, and more good stuff from +George Freitag

If you have to put keywords ahead of your brand in your home page title in order to rank well - you're doing it wrong. #SEO
But that's ok because Google is going to fix that for you and put your site name up front with a colon after it. Funny, I often do that for home page titles anyway.
It doesn't seem to be very widespread, and I haven't taken the time to really analyze it yet. But a few theories I have about likely triggers would be at least some kind of use of a Google+ business page, or maybe something as simple as using the traditional "bla bla bla | SiteName" title scheme. FWIW, I have always thought the ideal home page title should start with the company/site/brand since that is in fact what the home page is about. Let your the pages that are actually about "red widgets" or whatever have that as the start of the title. Apparently Goog... more »
