“It is not even remotely possible that all this was an accident, a mistake... [...] that only one IRS office was involved, [...] that the actions were the work of just a few agents, [...] that nobody in the IRS knew what was going on until very recently.” -- Noonan really gets the gravity of these events.

If this is legit, it calls for a complete suspension of agency authority until a civilian oversight board with teeth can be put in place. Any tax crimes this institution alleges should have to be referred to the police for investigation and prosecution through normal channels for obtaining warrants, etc.

IRS - Whitehouse Smoking Gun? -- This might be big; hard to know at this point. The Executive Office of the President and the IRS seem to have simultaneously been scouring the website of a government watchdog agency who had been critical of the administration.

I wonder if people will, by-and-large, just be obedient and compliant with this new encroachment, or if many will draw a line in the sand and say “no”:

International Space Station switches from Windows to Linux, for improved reliability
“We migrated key functions from Windows to Linux because we needed an operating system that was stable and reliable.”
"It’s worth noting that the ISS laptops used to run Windows XP, and we know they’ve been infected by at least one virus in their lifetime: in 2008, a Russian cosmonaut brought a laptop aboard with the W32.Gammima..AG worm, which quickly spread to the other laptops on board. Switching to Linux will essentially immunize the ISS against future infections."

I'm not sure which is worse: this story, or that "separately, the New York Times reported Tuesday evening that the Obama administration may embrace the FBI's proposal for a federal law mandating that tech companies build in backdoors for surveillance."

Gun crime has plunged, but Americans think it's up
"Gun crime has plunged in the United States since its peak in the middle of the 1990s, new studies of government data show. Yet few Americans are aware of the dramatic drop, and more than half believe gun crime has risen, according to a newly released survey by the Pew Research Center."

This site is amazing; push and pull data and hook events in hundreds of popular Cloud apps like Jira, Salesforce, Autotask, Basecamp, and on and on. Their UI is stupendous; practically zero learning curve. Check out some of their training videos... in minutes, it's readily apparent what the service does & how to use it.

Most Rapid Risers (update)
We have seen (http://goo.gl/wpV8b) that there is something going on in the way Google+ is suggesting new people. I'm not talking about the SUL or "Find People" since we don't know yet what exactly is going on ;)
Today we have an update, where we have compared the follower growth between these two periods:
- Period A: 20/03/2013 - 27/03/2013

This time I would also like to mention the first 20 people on the list, since the last time many rapid risers were happy to get in their posts a link to this one.

Dear Facebook,
I want to search for that comment my friend John Doe made on my comment on his post the other week, and I know it included the word (e.g.) "nosferatu." Your new advanced graph search doesn't even touch that problem. I wish the conversation had happened on Google+, where I would have found it in seconds.

Of course they will. The surest sign that a law is perverse and counterproductive is when congress decides that their own legislation is bad for them.

It used to be that businesses only had to collect sales tax on purchases from states where they had a physical presence. This is indeed a new tax.

The budget would "limit individuals from accumulating more than $3 million in individual retirement accounts and other tax-preferred retirement accounts. That would cap an individual's total balance across tax-preferred accounts to an amount sufficient to finance an annuity of not more than $205,000 per year in retirement, equal to about $3 million this year."

I don't understand the whole rationale behind sequestration requiring an FAA worker furlough. Don't we pay all kinds of airport use taxes that are supposed to fund this stuff.? I kind of wonder if this isn't the kind of budget politicking Thomas Sowell talks about:
"Back in my teaching days, many years ago, one of the things I liked to ask the class to consider was this: Imagine a government agency with only two tasks: (1) building statues of Benedict Arnold and (2) providing life-saving medications to children. If this agency's budget were cut, what would it do?
The answer, of course, is that it would cut back on the medications for children. Why? Because that would be what was most likely to get the budget cuts restored. If they cut back on building statues of Benedict Arnold, people might ask why they were building statues of Benedict Arnold in the first place.

This falls into the category, I will believe it when I see it. A Linux laptop that works out of the box. It connects to wireless networks without screwing with configuration files, and hooking up to external monitors is a breeze.
Personally I would love to move over to Linux, but getting hardware to work with it is always a hassle. Becoming a Linux guru is not one of my ambitions in life. For me computers are just a tool, they should work out of the box without special knowledge. This is the thing that Linux developers need to learn. In order for Linux to become the desktop of choice, it needs to be hassle free and simple to configure.

What on earth is going on with Google+? 2,400 new followers in the last 10 days, and I've really been in a lull as far as participating here, so no idea where the influx is coming from. Is Plus spiking in general, or is there a new spam wave or something?
