Spent the afternoon exploring Gunnamatta Beach on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. No-one around for miles, other than a few fishermen and surfers in the distance.
Perfect conditions for some coastal photography!

Preventing Wasted Opportunities
This photo is one that came about thanks to advance research. More than three hours of research and another hour of field work went into that three second moment. Trip planning overall spanned more than eight hours of time. This was put in on the front end before we ever hit the road to DC. Time was spent looking for interesting DC photos, figuring out the locations of those photos, determining when to be at those locations, stringing that data together, and fitting all of that into a family-oriented trip. Upon arrival, additional time was spent to actually go and capture the images. (Please remember to always be open to spontaneous opportunities.)
A similar image to this one was found by searching through “interesting” photos of Washington DC on flickr. After that a great article by +Brandon Kopp about photographing the “Big 3″ was found (h... more »

"[I]n the past I’ve often made the mistake of planning my photo shoots to make sure I’m looking towards the sun. While this can work for silhouettes, more often than not it will also give you unwanted lens flare and very high contrast that can be difficult to manage..."

Here's a fun article answering the following hypothetical question:
"What is the longest possible sunset you can experience while driving, assuming we are obeying the speed limit and driving on paved roads?"
Take note of what is "not a sunset" - the sun dropping behind a mountain is not the same as sunset, a subtlety that sometimes catches people out.

Last light on Adobe Mesa, Castle Valley, Utah.
Love the big skies of the American West!

Another view of Parriott Mesa, Castle Valley UT.
This is the great sunset that never was - a layer of high cloud with a gap to the west. The late afternoon light lit the mesas beautifully, but then was blocked at the last minute by more clouds.
Ah well...

The La Sal Mountains and Adobe Mesa, Castle Valley, Utah.
Around 15 minutes before sunset, the sun has dropped too low to reach the front of the mesa, but still catches the snow-capped peaks of the La Sals.

Attention Android users: Google have released an update today for Google Play Services, which fixes a few bugs in the new Maps API used in TPE.
We've seen a few crash reports related to Out of Memory errors, which should, we hope, be fixed with this update.

Moon Set Behind The Minarets...
What were your camera settings?
Back in the 35mm film days, each individual exposure was relatively expensive, and you had little feedback to go on while shooting, so you had to learn approximate settings for various situations, take a shot, and hope for the best when you received prints back, often days later. Since the light was often changing fast while you took the shots, good luck remembering the settings for any one of them, and learning from your experience. Of course you could take detailed notes, but that is inconvenient while you might only have 60 seconds of peak conditions.
With digital photography, that has all changed. Images are essentially free on a per-shot basis, you get immediate feedback on how successful your attempt was, and you have every imaginable detail available as you inspect your results later to lea... more »
