(en) For our last photowalk in 2015, we'll try and capture a beautiful sunrise. Let's meet before or after 7:30am, somewhere on Pont des Arts. And when the sun is beginning to be a bit high, we'll move to a café nearby.Sortie photo / Photowalk - Sunrise2015-12-20 07:30:0014
(en) Shall we go and see if Autumn had anything to show us? Let's meet on *Saturday 24th in front of RER station Cité Universitaire at 3:30pm* to go and explore Montsouris garden a bit. And as usual we'll move after that to a warm café nearby.Sortie photo / Photowalk - Autumn In Montsouris2015-10-24 15:30:0016

Heli V.11,275+Thomas Paris will be visiting Helsinki, so let's meet him and each other, wander around our lovely Helsinki, take some pictures and have fun. You are welcome to join us even if you don't have a camera at all :). We'll meet at 13 at the corner (nearest to railwaystation) of Vltava, Elielinaukio 2. Feel free to invite others too! Route proposal: http://the52photographs.fi/route1.jpg This is about 6 km and we surely can change it during the walk and so... I myself love to walk near the sea and I never get tired of those streets. There are also nice cafes by the sea (Cafe Ursula http://ursula.fi/kaivopuisto/, Mattolaituri https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mattolaituri/166211710057843, etc.) Another proposal if the route 1 looks boring: http://the52photographs.fi/route3.jpg (also 6 km) After that we could take a ferry to Suomenlinna fortress and spend a couple of hours there too. If you'd like to comment this route or sth else, feel free :)Photowalk Helsinki2013-07-13 13:00:0016
Thomas Paris29,061*Not a real event, just a convenient way to do note taking* _If you got an invite, it must be because you're in my circles of photographers in Finland. I'm not trying to spam you, just hoping to meet you._ *Paris goes to Finland!* Thomas Paris, that is. It's been too long since I've last been to the country of a thousand lakes and I'm going to remedy this. This summer, I'll spend two weeks in that most magical of places, Suomi. I'll be visiting old friends (most of them in Turku) and hopefully will enjoy Midnight Sun, but other than that my schedule is still fairly open. Which means, I can come and visit you, for a photowalk or simply to chat over a beer. And because I know Finns, you don't have to worry, I can do the chatting part for you :) So, any chance we might meet? Nähdään! ThomasParis goes to Finland2013-07-01 15:00:004

I've shot this view a couple of times, of the Eiffel Tower seen from one of the bridges on the Seine river, but never was I able to make as amazing an image as +Mee Ming Wong's. That splash of colour, illuminated by the setting sun, and that woman simply enjoying a stroll along the river, will tell you so much about the magic of Paris. Thanks Mee Ming, for sharing this with us!

And the internet does beautiful things, sometimes. A few weeks ago, +Liz C introduced us (us = +Photowalk Paris) to +David Q. I love it when online life gives me a chance to meet, in real life, such beautiful souls ^_^ Thanks everyone!

Someone's coming to Paris just to collect this print!

Well, not really. I understand Paris itself is their main reason to come here. But one can dream, right? And the print really is for them.

Which of my photographs will you get a print of?

Had a very interesting experience at yesterday's group show and I saw some beautiful work from the other artists. But now, I can't wait for my next solo show ;)

My work are the three photographs in the middle, the big blue one and the two smaller ones on the other wall.

In preparation for tonight's show, I've updated my personal website with my selection of photographs from my trip to Patagonia last year.

And they're all available as signed and numbered prints, if you'd like something soothing decorating your wall.

It was only through pure chance I met +nomad dimitri on Saturday but boy am I glad I did. A very nice person indeed and now I see he's made good videos about, amongst other subjects, Paris. Not only is the topic interesting and he's talking about stuff I don't think gets mentioned often enough (sure the Louvre Pyramids are interesting to look at, but do you know why they're there?) but I think his friendliness shines through too. A winning combination, if you ask me.
Thanks for everything, Dimitri!

A modern classic: The Pyramids of the Louvre

Who dares mess with a classic? How can you modernize the very symbol of historicity?
For the Louvre Museum in Paris, is not just the repository of some of the world's most valued treasures - it is itself one of the world's treasures.
Who would dare botox Audrey Hepburn?

The French did. There were practical reasons, as usual. Too many people want to visit the Louvre in the era of global super-museums increasingly catering to mass culture (can you guess how many people crave a selfie in front of the Mona Lisa? Millions? Billions?)

So the Louvre had to expand. Building a tower like the MOMA in Manhattan was out of the question. The only way to go was underground. But how do you bring natural light underground?

Voila! The Pyramids. A daring and controversial intervention to a world classic (especially one designed by a Chinese American architect). I first visited them at their inauguration, nearly 30 years ago. Join me on this visit to find out how they are holding up. Have they dated?

Here's some useful bit of info for all you photographers out there:
I had missed the debate about turning off IS/VR on your lens before traveling but it's pretty clear from this article on Thom Hogan's website, that Roger Cicala was misquoted and doesn't believe turning off IS/VR helps much in the best of cases. It doesn't hurt either, so you might as well do it. But don't lose sleep if you forgot to do it before boarding that plane to a beautiful location...

When I went on a photography workshop with +Thom Hogan (remember those Patagonia shots?), he told us how we should describe what it is we're photographing, tell a story describing what it is we're capturing (and no, I don't mean "heh, that's a mountain!" but rather something like "darn, that mountain is towering the landscape like everything else is tiny") and try and make an image that tells that story, not one that simply documents what was in front of us.
This recent article of his deals with this idea and while it doesn't delve as deeply into it as we got to do on that workshop, it should help you get started in making better images.

Tried a new restaurant the other day: Mensae
And I loved it. Very well executed and tasty food (not as edgy as some of the stuff I've tried in the past few months but certainly not boring either) in a simple, bright, welcoming setting. Oh and the staff is very welcoming too. This one's going straight into my shortlist of places to go back to.

Every now and then, Google decides to remind me what was happening in my life a few years ago. Well, this time it's showing me what I was doing 4 years ago, when I was working on a #creative366project. A Creative 366 Project? Yep, one picture every day, on a leap year.
And I had decided to shoot all of them using only my phone, the stock camera app and no post processing. So as to force myself to work on my composition skills. I had limited control over lighting too, but only very limited. In this series, you can see how I was trying to create something using only a glass of water lit by a desk lamp. You can see how I was trying to shoot mostly one side or the other, to include the shadow or not. Or to keep only the shadow. Typical example of me working the composition. Until I finally decided to go for the last one, with the glass against a dark background (simply making sure I was lighting the... more »

Until I finally decided to go for the last one, with the glass against a dark background (simply making sure I was lighting the glass but not the table) because, if I remember correctly, I felt the contrast of the bright glass against the dark background was pleasing.
This project was a great exercise, if a bit taxing, and there are still times I think I should do it again. But every time I do, I remember just how difficult it was to produce something every day ;)
Oh and big thanks to +Takahiro Yamamoto, who got me into giving this crazy project a try.___

Can you feel the magic in +Thomas Kleemann's shot? I just love how he beautifully captured the quiet energy of trees catching some light. Thanks for a great image, Thomas!

+Varina Patel and +Jay Patel's Spot On Exposure video course sounds like it would be the perfect way for you to learn how to take control of your camera.
Mind you, I haven't seen the actual video, only this youtube promotion, and don't know them personally, but everything I've heard and read from them sounded very good, clear/understandable and relevant/useful. I'd be very surprised if this course wasn't good.

Another self-portrait I shot thinking I might use it for a postcard. I ended up making what I feel is a better one later on that trip, but I do like this one.
