ARTISTS IN THE PLUS1,973,520+Artists In The Plus is proud to bring you a very special "Concerts In The Plus!' with Guitar Legend +Preston Reed. (Banner Photo By +Ralf Hebauf ) +Preston Reed has virtually reinvented how the acoustic guitar is played. Reed practices a flamboyant self-invented style, characterized by percussive techniques and simultaneous rhythm and melody lines that dance and ricochet around each other, giving his music a level of excitement that is unparalleled among today's guitarists. Playing an array of guitars from acoustic to electric to classical Reed's vast range of explosively original music will forever change your expectation of a guitarist. First-time listeners find it impossible to believe that they're hearing just the one musician, in real time. Reed attacks the entire instrument in a never-ending search for the orchestra he knows is lurking inside. At full tilt, his fingers, thumbs, fists and hands at once suggest a drummer, keyboardist, bassist and several guitarists at work. The most impressive thing about Reed's technique, though, is that it doesn't draw attention to itself. His compositions are far from abstract virtuosic displays; even without lyrics he creates vivid, engrossing scenes. Sometimes the effect is almost onomatopoetic. Reed generates visual stimuli with every tweak of his instrument, thus augmenting his wordless compositions with an aura of the poetic. Each tune is a story in itself with a potent, cinematic atmosphere and an almost tangible thread of communication between Preston Reed and the listener. Reed's entry into this guitar odyssey was inauspicious enough, his path thereafter largely self-discovered. A few chords learned from his guitar playing father, a brief, very brief, flirtation with the ukulele, clandestine practice sessions of his favourite Beatles and Stones songs on dad's guitar .... and then a too-strict classical guitar teacher led to premature retirement. At 16, however, Reed heard Jefferson Airplane's rootsy blues offshoot, Hot Tuna. His interest was rekindled big time. Acoustic guitar heroes John Fahey and Leo Kottke were studied, their styles absorbed but not imitated, and at this point things really begin to get interesting because, at 17, Reed, by now precociously proficient, played his first live gig, supporting beat poet Allen Ginsberg at the Smithsonian Institute. Just getting on a train from his native Armonk in New York State to Washington was a cool adventure. And it was just the first of many, not least of which was the one which resulted from his signing his first deal with a major record company, MCA, through the auspices of his friend, country singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett. Determined to make the most of this opportunity, Reed pushed himself to go beyond the standard fingerpicking styles he'd perfected. The result was the beginnings of Reeds startlingly innovative style, with its percussive, two-handed fretboard attack, that you hear today and which has caused guitar luminaries such "Concerts In The Plus!" Lots of talk today about Windows 10.

Apparently as I have Windows 7 on my approx 4 year old laptop I'm entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 10. Unsure whether I'm going to bother at the moment but, interesting to see some of the bells and whistles that are in Windows 10 courtesy of this video from +BBC News's +Rory Cellan-Jones.

Donald Trump was quoted few days ago (I can't remember where online I read it) that he didn't think that waterboarding was that bad.

Here's a controlled reconstruction of what waterboarding is, done for the Panorama programme on BBC 1. After seeing it, I don't agree with Trump.

Big question is, what caused the whole rebooting and stuck in loop thing?

So I know what's updating, I have all auto update things switched off.

So, I'm guessing Google Play Services doing a background update, the phone or some naughty app___

(Video at other end of link) Not your average BBC Prom, dance music from the last 20 years played by an orchestra.

I'm watching it right now and although one of my ancestors (Sir Henry Wood) who was the first ever Proms conductor might spin in his grave as I say this (from what I've read he preferred classical music), I'm quite enjoying it.

There's no mention of dates for the English version on BBC but, I'd guess late this year or early next year.

Remnants of what's left of the army camp at Tonfanau just north of Tywyn.

Originally built as a training camp for the army in World War 2 it was used as a refugee camp when Idi Amin chucked a load of people out of Uganda.

Parents are still setting up the shop but, you can see that the name for their unit that was in the indoor market is being resurrected (Books Plus) for the shop.

For those wondering, the unit was named approx a year before g+ became known. It's named Books Plus due to the fact that it sells books and other things such as antiques and collectables.

It's officially opening on Saturday although people keep on trying to come in as boxes of things come in.

For those coming to the shop, the door to get in is opposite the one to get into the Barbershop next door and not the obvious looking one on the other side of the shop window.

Today's audio entertainment starts with +MistaJam's radio show from last night which I downloaded this morning using the BBC iPlayer radio app before leaving the house. Presumably due to all the music in the 3 hour show, the file is something like 440Mb.

Phone signal quality is patchy along the coast so, I normally preload music via Google Play Music or podcasts via Pocket Casts but, as I said above I'm trying out listening to a downloaded radio show from the BBC this morning.

Morning all.
Hope all is well.

My stick is taking it easy whilst we wait for the train on a day of traveling.

First stop will be Aberystwyth (via Dovey Junction) to see +The Little Bookshop's new sister shop (it doesn't have a name yet) which parents are just finishing setting up on Northgate street ( although it's already open to those who wish to buy a book already).

I'll be bookshop sitting it sometime next week.

Then onto Borth for some museum volunteering at Borth Station Museum.

Before heading back up the coast via Machynlleth to get shouted at by the birds who will have emptied their feeders by lunch time and be complaining that it wasn't filled up as usual. Having said that they've chucked quite a bit of seed onto the ground so, they should be ok.

Have just seen an Osprey but, it's a little different to the avian ones that fly around in the next valley along

This one is an Osprey helicopter which is what you would get if you crossed a helicopter and a plane as it can fly as either.

Have never seen one of these before apart from in a couple of films along with the fact they are (to the best of my knowledge) only flown by USAF I never expected to see one in the skies over Wales.

I went outside to top up the bird feeders and could hear what sounded like a helicopter. Normally they fly from Porthmadog or Snowdon direction and then either straight over the village or turn right and head off down the estuary but, this noise was coming from behind the ridge  which is above Talsarnau.

It sounded like a Chinook helicopter and as I stood there waiting for it to appear over the ridge there appeared not a Chinook but, an Osprey in full hover just peeking over the ridge.

I went and got my camera and when I came back it had gone back behind the ridge and I thought that was it, I had missed my chance for a pic but, the noise of the rotors wasn't getting quieter. So, I waited and a couple of minutes later it reappeared and flew off out towards Ynys which is south west of Talsarnau.

I've only got 5x optical zoom on my camera so, it's not the best pic but, as you can see on the zoomed in pic it was flying in helicopter mode but, judging by the speed it was heading off in, I think it must have transferred to plane mode.

It's not unusual to see fighter jets fly over whilst obviously training but, before this year the only military helicopters flying through that I've seen were Chinooks.

So far this year I've seen:
- Merlin
- Apache (flying in pairs)
- Lynx
- Osprey

Starting to wonder whether the Rhinog mountains (mountains behind Talsarnau) and Dwyryd estuary are becoming part of the military helicopter version of the Mach Loop which is where the fighter jets practice. Having said that the military helicopters don't fly through as regular as the jets on the Mach Loop.

Bit more info about Osprey helicopters - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_Boeing_V-22_Osprey___

Bit strange reading the latest issue of Top Gear magazine.

All the usual bits are there except for the columns written by Clarkson, Hammond and May. Instead, where the columns would normally be over several pages is an interview with Chris Evans.

I quite enjoyed the columns, will be interesting to see if they get someone else to do columns in future issues.

Was reminded by the timehop app today that, on this day 9 years ago it was the reunion and goodbye party for my old primary school called Brynherbert which was closed for the last time 9 years ago.

It wasn't a very large school with only 2 classrooms and something like 35 pupils when I left (from what I recollect it had gotten to single figure numbers 9 years ago) but, it held numerous memories both good and bad for lots of people.

The old man in one of the pics is Mr Jones or as everybody knew him, Sir. He was the headmaster and 1 of the 2 teachers for all but, the last year I was there (due to retirement) but, he was like a second dad to everybody from what I recollect being both firm, fair and kind as well as rolling out the old "dad" type jokes such as when I gave him a note to say I was going to be picked up by my mum to be taken to the dentist, him asking me if I... more »

The big tree in one of the other pics is the giant oak which was the school's logo. We didn't have a uniform but, I seem to recollect on several occasions sweatshirts being for sale with the oak tree on for those who wanted to buy one.

In one of the other pics is the school itself. The stone built bit is the original school built in the late 1800s. The other bit was built either just before or after I left in '93 and was internal toilets and storage. Never found out if it was true but, was told we were the last primary school in Ceredigion ( county I lived in and went to school in) that had outside toilets. The school when I was there consisted of 2 classrooms with a folding partition in the middle, a kitchen (which you can see a bit of in one of the other pics) and porch for hanging your coats up in.

One of the other pics shows a bit of one of the classrooms and preparation for the evening's event.

There was singing of old songs we all used to sing as kids at Brynherbert and speeches (never found out who the man giving the speech in the pic was).

And even as the night drew in there was an impromptu cricket game amongst some of the former pupils of varying ages.

There were attempts to have it as a community centre but, the council sold Brynherbert. I've no idea what's happened with it but, judging by what it looks like on Google Street View (https://plus.google.com/+JimWall/posts/gMVpmkHaau6), I don't think much has been done with it

Anybody else having trouble chromecasting to a Nexus Player or Android TV device?

I can get it to cast the screen from my Nexus 4 but when I try to cast from any app on my phone (not whilst still casting screen) to my Nexus Player it makes the initial connection but, when I press play on the phone a message appears on my Nexus 4 saying there's an error.

Only solution I could find online was to factory reset the Nexus Player which I did but, it made no difference.

106 years after the first aeroplane flight across the English channel, the first ever all electric plane (powered by batteries in the wings) flight across the English channel happened a few weeks ago.

Before anyone mentions it, a month or 2 ago there was an electric plane which crossed the Pacific but, that is powered by solar panels on the wings as opposed to just batteries which the channel hopping one is powered by.

One of the advantages of having my phone up and running again is being able to hear my music via Google Music whenever and wherever I want (I hardly ever use the minutes or texts that cone with my phone plan thing but, I love the unlimited data).

This week it's mostly been on random shuffle so, apart from a couple of songs I've just left the Google Music app choose what I'm listening to.

So, here's the top 5 played songs on my phone in the last 7 days according to +Last.fm's audio scrobbler (No. 1 at the top all the way down to No. 5 at the bottom).

Have to admit I'm surprised at whose there as I was expecting acdc to make an appearance.

Had a go at side loading apps onto my Nexus Player (aka putting apps that aren't listed in the Google play store as working on the Nexus Player but, according to others will work on the Nexus Player onto the Nexus Player)

Had varying degrees of success with how they behaved but, none were as good as they are on devices that they officially work on.

Only one that I found to work vaguely decently was +Google Drive which helped with the side loading and meant no wires were needed.

Whilst routing around the apps for the Nexus Player on the full website, I did find an app that isn't officially listed in +Google Play which is the android TV version of the Twit.tv app does work

Surely in a democratic country the replacement councillor should have been chosen by election in the ward (aka area) he/she represented rather than a private vote amongst councillors.

Inspired by the latest episode of The Ihnatko Almanac podcast (hosted by +Andy Ihnatko and Dan Benjamin) which I was listening to last night and the fact I've been looking back at things I've been doing online over the years lately using the timehop app, here's what according to Amazon was my first ever purchase not only from them but, online.

From looking at it, I'm guessing it was a present for my dad but, intriguingly apparently it was ordered on the 8th of January so, too late for Christmas and several months early for his birthday. So, maybe it was for someone or something else. (Curse you poor memory).

A good way to test out how observant cyclists are.

Once construction is complete the cycle path is meant to be rerouted around the back of the shelter.
