ARTISTS IN THE PLUS1,993,653+Artists In The Plus is proud to bring you a very special "Concerts In The Plus!' with Guitar Legend +Preston Reed. (Banner Photo By +Ralf Hebauf ) +Preston Reed has virtually reinvented how the acoustic guitar is played. Reed practices a flamboyant self-invented style, characterized by percussive techniques and simultaneous rhythm and melody lines that dance and ricochet around each other, giving his music a level of excitement that is unparalleled among today's guitarists. Playing an array of guitars from acoustic to electric to classical Reed's vast range of explosively original music will forever change your expectation of a guitarist. First-time listeners find it impossible to believe that they're hearing just the one musician, in real time. Reed attacks the entire instrument in a never-ending search for the orchestra he knows is lurking inside. At full tilt, his fingers, thumbs, fists and hands at once suggest a drummer, keyboardist, bassist and several guitarists at work. The most impressive thing about Reed's technique, though, is that it doesn't draw attention to itself. His compositions are far from abstract virtuosic displays; even without lyrics he creates vivid, engrossing scenes. Sometimes the effect is almost onomatopoetic. Reed generates visual stimuli with every tweak of his instrument, thus augmenting his wordless compositions with an aura of the poetic. Each tune is a story in itself with a potent, cinematic atmosphere and an almost tangible thread of communication between Preston Reed and the listener. Reed's entry into this guitar odyssey was inauspicious enough, his path thereafter largely self-discovered. A few chords learned from his guitar playing father, a brief, very brief, flirtation with the ukulele, clandestine practice sessions of his favourite Beatles and Stones songs on dad's guitar .... and then a too-strict classical guitar teacher led to premature retirement. At 16, however, Reed heard Jefferson Airplane's rootsy blues offshoot, Hot Tuna. His interest was rekindled big time. Acoustic guitar heroes John Fahey and Leo Kottke were studied, their styles absorbed but not imitated, and at this point things really begin to get interesting because, at 17, Reed, by now precociously proficient, played his first live gig, supporting beat poet Allen Ginsberg at the Smithsonian Institute. Just getting on a train from his native Armonk in New York State to Washington was a cool adventure. And it was just the first of many, not least of which was the one which resulted from his signing his first deal with a major record company, MCA, through the auspices of his friend, country singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett. Determined to make the most of this opportunity, Reed pushed himself to go beyond the standard fingerpicking styles he'd perfected. The result was the beginnings of Reeds startlingly innovative style, with its percussive, two-handed fretboard attack, that you hear today and which has caused guitar luminaries such "Concerts In The Plus!" I reckon with the behaviour of some of the senior Labour party members during this leadership election, they are having a competition to see how badly they can screw the party up just because they're seemingly scared Corbyn might win and do something different rather than the same old politics which either one of the other candidates is likely to do..

I'm neither a Labour or a Conservative voter but, I reckon change in Westminster politics would be good and might give the other political parties a metaphorical kick up the backside.

New trailer for a +BBC  factual drama about GTA particulalry around 2002 when some people were trying to get it banned.

It's going to be on BBC2 on 15th of september at 9pm.

Programme description from +BBC Media Centre (http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2015/37/gamechangers) is below.

"This 90-minute factual drama goes behind the scenes of the hit video game Grand Theft Auto, arguably the greatest British coding success since Bletchley Park.

In Autumn 2013, the game’s latest iteration – GTA: V – earned $1bn in just three days, becoming the fastest-selling entertainment product in history. But this drama goes back to 2002, to tell the story of a three-year period of intense controversy in the history of this iconic game's development. It happened when two passionate men on either side of a high-stakes cultural divide clashed. This conflict, between the creative genius behind the game and a self-styled crusader for American morality, escalated into a fight for the hearts, minds and freedoms of an entire gaming generation.

The fastest-selling entertainment product in history comes not from Silicon Valley, but is driven by a bunch of British game designers. Friends since their school days, they are led by the game's mastermind-designer, Sam Houser. By 2002, Sam and his creative team have constructed for their fans a vast virtual world, teeming with a high-octane mix of criminal characters, lethal weapons and outrageous storylines. Here you can even shape and sculpt your avatar, crafting their character and appearance to your personal preference.

Within this fantasy landscape, some players choose to take part in a series of dangerous missions, while others become immersed in a sprawling criminal underworld, killing cops, hijacking cars and running over pedestrians. And it's this that increasingly drives opposition to GTA. Because the game's violent gameplay leads to fierce opposition: from parents worried about its impact on children; from politicians, fearful of its influence; and, above all, from campaigners fighting to prevent the game being played by minors.

At the vanguard of this crusade is the formidable Christian lawyer Jack Thompson, a man determined to do whatever he can to stop the relentless rise of the game and its influence on children. The Gamechangers tells the story of how British game designers pushed boundaries into uncharted territory, of how those fighting GTA became consumed by a battle which overwhelmed their lives, and how the subsequent fallout threatened to bring down leading players on both sides.

This drama is for an adult audience and has not been authorised by the producers of Grand Theft Auto. Rather, it is based on court documents and interviews with many of those involved in the real events behind this compelling story.

Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter, A Young Doctor's Notebook, The Woman In Black) plays Sam Houser, and Bill Paxton (Texas Rising, Nightcrawler, Hatfield and McCoys, Titanic, Apollo 13) plays Jack Thompson. The drama is written by James Wood (Rev, Ambassadors), directed by Owen Harris (Kill Your Friends, Black Mirror, Holy Flying Circus) and produced by Jim Spencer (Pride, All Stars, Monsters).

It is executive produced by Mark Hedgecoe (The Challenger) and James Wood. It is commissioned by Tom McDonald.

The Gamechangers is a BBC in-house production made by BBC Scotland Science."___

For those who think a HD screen isn't good enough on their phone, Sony has revealed the first smartphone that can film in 4K and play the footage back in 4K.

Slight overkill for such a small screen but, certainly something to make the Xperia Z5 Premium stand out from all the other phones.

I finished reading the Shepherd's Crown (Terry Pratchett's last ever book) yesterday

Sad to know that there will be no more but, interesting that the his last ever book and the first ever Discworld book I read approx 20 years ago both involved the witches.

In the back of the book, Rob Wilkins whose worked with Terry Pratchett over the years on a number of his books reveals in an Afterword that Pratchett wrote notes for allsorts of stories that he never got to finish or start. According to Rob:

"We will now not know how the old folk of Twilight Canyons solve the mystery of a missing treasure and defeat the rise of a Dark Lord despite their failing memories, nor the secret of the crystal cave and the carnivorous plants in The Dark Incontinent, nor how Constable Feeney solves a whodunnit amongst the congenitally decent and honest goblins, nor how the second book... more »

Not many people do well competing in one sport. Retire. Transfer to a completely new sport and do pretty decent on their debut but, that's what multiple Olympic cycling  champion Vicky Pendelton did on her competitive horse race debut yesterday by coming second.

Can't imagine many other sports people doing that.

Not exactly +Manchester United 's first ever transfer window and you would have thought they knew about timezone differences.

Or maybe there was more to it seeing as Man U lost to Swansea (a team that on paper they should have beaten) this weekend for the 3rd time in approx a year.

Always nice to see the underdog beat the expected winner particularly if it's a Welsh underdog.

Had given up on them using it because it didn't appear on their site within a couple of days of them asking but, I have feedly set to ping any news stories mentioning certain keywords and it picked up on this which was posted earlier today.

Doesn't look like much but, an intriguing alternative to a caravan or camping in a tent.

If you want to skip the bit where it's being driven offroad and see why it's described as "The Swiss Army Knife Camping Trailer" then scroll along to approx 2:54

So on the one hand, when the weather is really hot, setting up portable outdoor showers for people to cool off is a pretty good idea.

On the other hand, having a bunch of showers be the first thing people see when they arrive at Auschwitz may not quite convey the intended message.

So, yesterday afternoon I had a moment of dumb combined with a moment of frustration which led to me doing something which in hindsight was a bit of a silly thing to do.

Those who've followed me for long enough know that in last 8 months I've had all sorts of problems trying to play games online using my PS3 ( whilst net access is fine for all other devices, PS3 claims that  upload speed is stupidly slow which is a problem when wanting the PS3 to talk to a server)

Having been recently watching videos on  Youtube of Achievement Hunter playing GTAO I decided even though I suspected there wouldn't be much success to have another attempt at playing GTAO for the first time in approx 3 months.

To give the PS3 it's dues, it did attempt to connect to the servers but, without success either of the 3 times (Timed Out messages all 3 attempts) I decided to play someG... more »

To give the PS3 it's dues, it did attempt to connect to the servers but, without success either of the 3 times (Timed Out messages all 3 attempts) I decided to play some GTAV but, everytime I went to change character there was my GTAO character in the character select circle thing.

So, this is when the moments of frustration and dumb combined and I got it in my head that the only thing that hadn't been tried yet to solve the whole connection issue was a factory reset. The thinking being that maybe something had screwed up a software update or a slightly incorrect installation had screwed something up.

So, I did the full restore PS3 option thing and had to wait 10 and a bit hours for it do it's thing.

The restore PS3 thing finished early this morning and fingers crossed all seems to have gone well. I was able to get into GTAO (I'm not getting massivley excited yet because there have been previous false dawns when I have thought I've fixed the problem).

The one downside/upside depending on your point of view is that because I was focused on trying to get the net connection problem fixed, I didn't consider saving/backing up my saved games.

DOH!

This means that those Minecraft things I built and spent days if not weeks building are lost. As is my progress in all my other games such as GTAV and Red Dead Redemption.

Whilst this is a major metaphorical pain in the rear end, it does mean I get to have another go at the games from the very beginning.

For those wondering, my GTAO progress and character is saved on the GTAO servers so, fortunately that wasn't lost. I just hope the problem has been solved.___

Found out whilst scrolling the stream of tweets from people I follow that, there's a board game named after the mountain region/area I live in which is called Snowdonia.

Having watched the video below which explains the various bits of the game, it should really be called Snowdon seeing as that's where all the action happens.

Possibly something for +Wil Wheaton to play on TableTop (the board game show he does on youtube)

Have just gone and ordered a game controller for my Nexus Player, whilst there I noticed this pic at the top of the TV & Video section.

I recognise:

- Remote for Nexus Player
- Game controller for Nexus Player

but, that leaves 4 other devices which I don't recognise and none of the 4 are listed in the UK version of the Google Play Store.

Anybody know what they are?

My only grumble with it so far is that the app for +YouTube Gaming  is apparently compatible with my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (both dead) and not my +Nexus  Player which as well as being alive is designed for sitting back and watching videos.

Hopefully it'll be rectified soon.

Slightly in +YouTube Gaming 's defence, +Twitch doesn't have an app that works on the +Nexus Player either.

Fortunately as you can see from this post I did find a bluetooth keyboard that I stumbled across a couple of months ago and almost gave to someone else who was looking for a Bluetooth keyboard (I didn't in the end because they got one from somewhere else).

Only slight downside is that it's a full size keyboard that makes a fair bit of noise compared to the keyboard on me laptop.

Unlike Timehop which uses multiple social media sources, Google Photos seems to only use pics you've uploaded to Google Photos.

Taking pics of the woodpecker that visits the peanut feeders has been a bit problematic because it's very jumpy and the slightest movement causes it to fly off and there's usually branches in the way but, whilst sorting out the cropping of the pic in the last post, it turned up and I was able to get these 2 pics (pics have been cropped for added zoom)

A quick pic plus cropped version from earlier today at Talsarnau station behind the shelter which once again this year has a swallow nest above the light.

There were 3 swallows side by side when I went to get me camera out of it's bag but, 2 flew off before I could take pic.

As regular readers know, 2015 hasn't been a massively brilliant year for tech I own as all the items of tech I own seem to be slowly dieing off.

Well, it looks like there might be a another piece of tech getting ready to keel over.

Was watching videos via links on reddit and all of a sudden the screen went blank. as the screen seemed to be on but, not showing anything and the fan where the heat gets kicked out seemed a bit hot I'm guessing the on board graphics chip got a little too hot and went into preservation mode because after leaving my laptop for a couple of hours the screen shows everything as normal.

it just stopped connecting via wifi whilst I was typing this and have had to hook up to the Home Hub via Ethernet.

I fear it's not long until the laptop is no more___

One of the things in the land of Youtube that irritates me is all the dumb/stupid people who instead of sharing a link to a video on youtube, go and download it off youtube and then upload it to their own youtube channel.

There is nothing big or clever about it so, in case you are one of those people please stop doing it as it makes it a lot more difficult for people to find the original.

Looks like it might be the end of the road for the old Coliseum cinema building in Porthmadog.

Unless the council come up with some excuse for it not to be demolished, permission will most probably be given at a meeting in September.

Those of you who've had me circled since the early days of g+ will remember that for 2 years I looked after my parents  second hand book and antique shop which used to be part of the cinema building (the bit with red wooden frame in the photo in the report).

Back on the 17th I left a mystery message (https://plus.google.com/+JimWall/posts/RXqKrv5dHRF) and several people had a go at guessing what it meant and why I was doing it.

Well, I can't reveal all the details at the moment (have been asked by someone else involved in what's going on to not reveal anything fully at the moment until certain things have happened) but, what I can reveal is that if (and it's a very big if) certain things metaphorically align, I should hopefully be in full time employment for the first time in a while in the not too distant future.

At the moment a tender application has been put in for something so, currently waiting for an answer as to whether the application has been successful or not.

The rail part of Barmouth Bridge is not under potential threat of closure.

The above sentence may make no sense to most of you reading this but, due to lazy headline writers, I've had to correct a number of people this week who've misunderstood the headlines and thought that the whole of Barmouth Bridge was under threat of potential closure when, it isn't.

What's under potential threat of closure is the footpath/cyclepath bit of the bridge because as part of Gwynedd County Council's money saving ideas due to cuts to the money they receive from the Welsh government in Cardiff who've had the amount they receive from the UK government in London cut,  they are considering stopping paying the £30,000 a year that they pay for the maintenance of the footpath/cyclepath. This would likely result in the closure of the footpath/cyclepath bit.

As someone pointed out to me last week, it's quite likely that Gwynedd Council "accidentally" let this information into the public domain so that something like the media frenzy and public uproar that has occurred, would occur in order to help them try and renegotiate their annual payment to Network Rail or get the Welsh government to take over the funding of it.___

Had been potentially considering a Chromebook as replacement for my 5 year old laptop at some point, but, maybe this might be the solution seeing as I don't really need to do computing on something the size of a laptop when travelling because I (when I have working versions) use a phone or tablet.

I also like it's ability to be hooked up to a tv which reminds me of the days when I use to hook my Acorn Electron and Commodore+4 computers up to the tv back in the late 80s and early 90s but, apart from the nostalgia trip, with the Nexus Player already hooked up to the tv I don't think I need another computing device attached to it.

For reasons I know not, I've been unintentionally an arse to people the last few days.

I promise to try my best not to be one today but, I've got to venture out into the wide world and go do some museum volunteering today so, I might leave all talking to the other volunteer(s) today.

If I see you in person today then, I apologise in advance if I'm an arse. It's nothing personal.

An interesting competition which I'd never heard of but, should perhaps get a bit more coverage in the media.

Interesting to see also how the different teams were treated before going to the competition:

"Team USA were invited to meet the President at the Whitehouse and the French finalists went to the Élysée Palace. Here in the host nation, Brazil, winners will have their university fees paid for them.

By contrast the UK team got sandwiches and a speech from the Dragon's Den entrepreneur, Theo Paphitis."

Well, today had it's moments.

Things started as usual. walked to station. Caught train. Got off at Dovey Junction to catch second train shaped thing of the day.

Now as I got off the train and joked to the guard about the information screen saying the next train to Aberystwyth would be at 16:55 almost 8 hours after I'd got to Dovey Junction I should have known that things weren't going to go to plan.

Train I'd got off left and went to Machynlleth. Train from Aberystwyth came and usually waits for train to Aberystwyth to come down the single track line from Machynlleth. After a few minutes train from Aberystwyth went off to Machynlleth. That ain't right. Where's me train? approx 15 minutes later a train from Machynlleth arrives. woohoo me train has arrived. nope. it heads off up the coast.

Information screen still says 16:55.

after approx 10 min someone who had a phone rang up Machynlleth station and someone at other end of line says our train has broken down and there's no replacement train. There is a replacement bus but, it's already left Machynlleth but, the person on the other end of the line will try to get hold of the driver via phone to let them know to pick up the 14 people on the platform.

For those who don't know, Dovey Junction station is in the middle of a bog, the nearest road is about a mile down a track a pot holed track pretty much only used by Network Rail workers when working on the station or railway line.

So, off we all set. Rag tag band of locals and tourists of allsorts of ages. Needless to say there was no sign of the rail replacement bus as even if Machynlleth station had got hold of the driver it would most probably be long past the end of the track on it's merry way to Borth and Aberystwyth stations.

Fortunately the road is the main road between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth and there was a bus stop nearby. Nice kind bus driver let us on for free after hearing our tale.

Whilst it was a bus shaped thing and not a train shaped thing it was interesting to watch the world go by from the top deck of the double decker and see things I hadn't seen in quite some time as it's quite a while since I last went along that road. There was someone who got on the bus a few stops after us who looked a lot like Pete Townsend from The Who.

Due to no phone there's no pics but, amongst other things I went past my old secondary school (Penglais).

Turns out there's a bus stop almost outside +Books Plus so, it was straight off the bus and open the shop approx 30 min late. Was even followed into the shop by a couple of people who had been stuck at Dovey Junction with me.

Sadly after all that fun and games, it was deader than a dodo in the shop. Entertainment was provided by a couple of family friends and George who owns the Borth Station Museum that I volunteer at visiting.

Please to report that trains were back to normal and behaved themselves on the return journey but, with the days events along with my bad leg playing up and only a couple of hours of bad sleep I think I may owe certain people apologies for being  a total utter smegging arse.

So if your reading this, I'm sorry and whether you are or aren't reading this,  I'll apologise in person later in week.___
